Today on the show we discuss: the tragic loss of her parents to opiate addiction, unpacking Lauren's childhood and her parents hidden drug addiction, the grieving process and how she healed, how Lauren overcame shame and started sharing her story, how she processed complex emotions, the one question she would ask her parents today and much more. ⚠ WELLNESS DISCLAIMER ⚠ Please be advised; the topics related to health and mental health in my content are for informational, discussion, and entertainment purposes only. So what should sedate me energizes me, and I need more. How many of you are opiate addicts? Had some clean time and then just went off the rails, OD'd first right out the rip because the craving doesn't know I ain't tuned up. They used to try and give me drugs, saying you won't experience craving. I said you'll kill me. I ain't going to stop just because I ain't feeling it. I'm going to go until I do feel it. We are living in an age of addiction, from compulsive gaming and binge eating to pornography and opioid abuse. Today I talked with historian David Courtwright about the global nature of pleasure, vice, and capitalism. His new book is called The Age of Addiction: How Bad Habits Became Big Business (Harvard University Press, 2019). During our discussion, Courtwright walks us through the emergence of the worldwide commodification of vice and shares his views on "limbic capitalism," the network of competitive businesses targeting the brain pathways responsible for feeling, motivation, and long-term memory. The book is equally interesting and disturbing. And Courtwright offers timely recommendations about how we can understand and address the Age of Addiction. Coming from one of the world's leading experts on the history of drugs and addiction, this important work raises stimulating and sobering questions about consumption and free will. Courtwright is the author of Forces of Habit: Drugs and the Making of the Modern World (Harvard University Press, 2001) as well as Dark Paradise: A History of Opiate Addiction in America (Harvard University Press, 1982). Lucas Richert is an associate professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He studies intoxicating substances and the pharmaceutical industry. However, his young adult life couldn't have been more different than his current reality. Around his 21st birthday, Doug was detoxing from opiates in a jail cell after years of drug addiction. He turned to physical exercise as an outlet which ultimately catalyzed him to face his demons head-on and completely reinvent himself. Doug's mission today is to inspire others to overcome adversity, break free from destructive addictions, and become the best version of themselves.  Here's the juice: How Doug's crippling insecurities and need for acceptance led him to drugs The moment that rock-bottomed him but ultimately turned his life around   How negative habit stacking is just as much of a thing as positive habit stacking What got him to start working out in jail (spoiler: he couldn't do one pushup when he started) Why reaching your “most successful” point is often your most unhappy one How spirituality helped him drop his ego and allowed him to see the bigger picture No one is coming to save you; you have to take ownership of your own life The role of community when bettering yourself  The concept of addiction transference – in his case, being addicted to drugs shifted to being addicted to validation Why you have to determine an identity for yourself or you'll become a chameleon, shaped by other people's identities When you're not feeling confident in yourself and your own victories you're unable to celebrate other people's wins What steps to take when you've hit rock bottom The importance of working your adversity muscle. During the trial, Prosecutor Creighton Waters asked Alex Murdaugh for more details about his addiction to opiates. The disgraced lawyer testified that the number of pills he took each day varied, anywhere from a dosage of 1000mg to 2000mg. “I had a pocket full of pills,” Murdaugh said, claiming that he had the substance on him while talking to police on June 8, 2021, shortly after his wife and son were murdered. This testimony shed light on the extent of Alex's addiction to opiates and raises questions about the role it may have played in the murders of Maggie and Paul. #AlexMurdaughTrial #OpiateAddiction #AlexMurdaughTestimony #PillAddiction #OpiatesRevealed #AddictionAndMurder #OpiatesInQuestion #PainkillerAddiction #TruthAboutPills #OpiatesInCourt Want to listen to ALL of our Podcasts Ad-Free? — Dr. Andre Waismann provides treatment for opiate addiction with ANR and has achieved unparalleled results. The ANR treatment became the most effective and safe way of treatment that allows patients to be free from opiate dependency and its side effects, withdrawals, and craving. ANR has helped over 24,000 patients worldwide. One of the more notable treatment happened in 1998 when Dr. Waismann helped a 6-year-old child that became opioid-dependent after a brain tumor removal. Opiate addiction is a disease of the central nervous system. It's not a personality disorder. It's a disease. A disease that is highly treatable. Dr. Waismann's vision for the future treatment of opiate addiction mirrors that of a dentist appointment. Where individuals would walk into their local hospital, announce that they have an opiate addiction, and would be treated right there on the spot. It's for this reason that he has expressed no desire to patent his method. He wants everyone who is in need of this life-saving treatment to have access to it. Whether it is with him and his team, or not. Even though that vision seems a way off, Dr. Waismann persists in his activism, and has taken his plight worldwide. From the early 1990s until today, the ANR method has spanned continents in its reach. From Italy to Australia, Indonesia to the United States, over 20 countries, and countless patients have been positively impacted, and their lives forever changed by the work of Dr. Waismann. Valeria interviews Dr. Andre Waismann   — He is the Developer of ANR, an Opiate Addiction Specialist, ICU Physician, and Speaker Dr. Waismann has spent the last thirty plus years working in the medical field in a variety of positions in several facilities ranging from Intensive Care Medicine Physician to Consultant to Medical Director, as well as Chairman and Chief of ANR clinics throughout the world. He specializes in Opiate Dependency and is most notably known for developing the ANR (Accelerated Neuro-Regulation) treatment of Opiate dependency. He has helped more than 24,000 patients globally overcome opioid dependency with this groundbreaking procedure. Passionate in his mission, he is determined to help people understand that opioid dependency is a treatable medical condition, giving lectures and presentations to numerous universities, medical centers, and congresses. Additionally, Dr Waismann is awaiting publication of his book “Changing of the Guards” which challenges the current policies on drug dependency. Guest: Dr Gurpreet a Medical Physician, Board Certified in Anesthesiology, Addiction, and Interventional Pain. For over 20 years I have practiced in the Urban Core, helping my patients regain their metabolic health.Pain is the final pathway, the body screaming that something has gone terribly wrong. I treat patients at the intersection of the pain epidemic, opioid epidemic, and diabetes epidemic. They are all inter-related pathologies, the clinical manifestations of systemic metainflammation.I spend most of my clinical hours dealing with chronic degenerative diseases that are primarily driven by Metabolic Syndrome leading to Metainflammation. Metabolic Syndrome is a form of malnutrition, malnutrition of excessive energy consumption, and toxicity from:-Acellular Carbohydrates-Synthetic Vegetable Oil consumptionThis malnutrition of excess is aggravated by leaky gut from plant-based chemical defenses. The Standard American Diet has become calorically dense but diluted of protein, minerals, and micronutrients.Unfortunately, Governmental policy combined with the profit motives of Big-Food and Big-Pharma encourages the consumption of manufactured foods, which may be non-nutritive and promote chronic systemic diseases. This disparity of synthesized food (which contains low nutritional value but high caloric load) leads to caloric overconsumption, energy toxicity, and eventual diabesity.Addiction behavior is manipulated by dopaminergic modulation by food manufacturers and gamification of passive activities, in the context of individual loneliness. Social media “connectedness” has created a false paradigm of human interaction, leaving individuals in silos of anonymous and self-destructive behavior.Humans are complex adaptive systems, and systematic failure is rarely a single cause phenomenon. Our historical disease models of single cause pathology are inadequate for this new synthesized Universe.***CONNECT WITH DR. In this week's episode, the Agents take a deep dive into a problem we are not ready for, the Fentanyl epidemic. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. It is both a prescribed drug, as well as a drug that is at times made and used illegally. Like morphine, prescription fentanyl is typically used to treat patients with severe pain, especially after surgery. It is also sometimes used to treat patients with chronic pain who are physically tolerant to other opioids. When prescribed by a doctor, fentanyl can be given as a shot, a patch that is put on a person's skin, or as lozenges that are sucked like cough drops. Fentanyl that is illegally manufactured is dangerous. It is made without the quality controls of pharmaceutical-grade fentanyl and is a major contributor to recent increases in synthetic opioid overdose deaths. This illegally manufactured fentanyl is sold illegally as a powder, dropped onto blotter paper, put in eye droppers and nasal sprays, or made into counterfeit pills that look like other prescription opioids. Importantly, fentanyl is also being mixed with other drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA. This is especially risky when people taking drugs don't realize that the drugs they are using might contain fentanyl and significantly increase their risk for overdose death. A person can easily overdose on fentanyl. An overdose occurs when a drug produces serious adverse effects and life-threatening symptoms. Death from an opioid overdose happens when the drug depresses the parts of the brain that control breathing. Fentanyl is addictive because of its potency. A person taking prescription fentanyl as instructed by a doctor can still experience dependence, which is characterized by withdrawal symptoms when the drug is stopped. A person can be dependent on a substance without being addicted, but dependence can sometimes lead to addiction.

At the age of 54, he tried marijuana for the first time — and it changed his life.“I literally started crying heavily because I couldn't believe that I was being introduced to my body for the first time in 25 years and that put me on a mission,” Miller says on The Cannabis Enigma Podcast. “I flushed my pills I felt the duty and obligation to help others like me, and to pay it back like he helped me.”Today, Miller is a medical cannabis journalist, investor, businessman, and evangelist. But we wanted to talk to him about his personal story. From how he takes his cannabis during the day and what he uses to sleep at night, to what he does when he travels internationally, to how he first told his children that their father smokes marijuana — Michael Miller's story is one that any prospective medical cannabis patient should hear, and most current users can relate to.“I didn't tell my children for many years because I'm not a victim, and I'm not whining or blaming anybody, but I've learned sometimes you need to have a story to help others because then people will see that it's just Michael, it's not the conference host, it's not a speaker, I'm just a regular guy who has the same pains and ouwies like every other human being."Edited and mixed by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man.
