Fresh off France's Six Nations win, I sat down with my old mate Shaun Edwards for a rare, wide-ranging conversation. This isn't just an interview — it's two lads from Wigan catching up after decades walking very different, but strangely parallel paths. Both of us came up through rugby, through hard graft and old-school values. But over time, we've both had to evolve. As coaches. As leaders. As men.We talked about it all, from the early days and the systems that changed the game, to fear, fatherhood, grief, and what it means to lead with heart, not just tactics.Shaun opened up in a way I don't think many have heard before. And for me, this episode felt special. We get into:Why Shaun hates losing more than he loves winningWhat fear can teach you and where it can fuck youHow he sees leadership and masculinity nowThe shift from hardness to softnessCoaching at the highest level, and what really drives performanceIf you're interested in what makes a great coach, a great team, or just a good man, this one's worth a listen. The Making of a CompetitorGrowing up in Wigan, and early life lessons from his dadWhy grief became a driving forceThe difference between rugby league and union — and what it taught himCoaching with FireThe early years at Wasps and WalesLessons from working with Gatland, Farrell and coWhat still motivates him after all these yearsA Brother Beyond RugbyThe early days of my friendship with ShaunWhat we've learned from each other and where our paths crossed againThe moment he started embracing softnessLeadership that LastsWhat players really need from a coach todayThe evolution of Shaun's leadership styleWhy presence, empathy and intuition matter more than ever
The Godfather of Strength and Conditioning. Fresh from the misty mountains of Peru, Al and Hask are joined by Hask's former Conditioning Coach at Wasps, Craig White; a man whose influence has shaped the face of High-Performance Coaching in rugby. With troublesome tales of managing Trevor Leota at Wasps alongside Shaun Edwards, Craig shares the biggest lessons he learned working with Clive Woodward and Warren Gatland on the 2005 and 2009 Lions Tours. For Craig, everything changed when he took a breather from the hyper-masculine world of rugby just months before the 2011 World Cup to go on a yoga retreat that opened his eyes to mindfulness, nature and a more spiritual style of coaching… Season 5 is sponsored by Continental Tyres.
I was joined by former Lions & South Africa number 10 Andre Pretorius to review the 2025 Six Nations. He gave his expert view on what went wrong for Ireland as they slipped from back to back champions and seeking a second grand slam in three years to third in the standings and looking like their golden years had come to an end. He also gives his honest opinion on the heated debate around the fly-half position. We then turned our attention to Six Nations champions France. Andre explained how their magical attack has a lot more structure to it that first meets the eye and gives his thoughts on if the likes of Louis Bielle-Biarrey and Thomas Ramos are the most exciting players in the world right now. Andre uses his insights from being a defence coach in Japan to break down the Shaun Edwards defence and tells tales of his time playing for Toulon in the TOP14. We finish the show with the former springbok giving us an insight into life in Japan and what learnings he has taken from coaching in a totally different culture. #springboks #ireland #france #sixnations #coaching #japan #southafrica #rugby #podcast Follow me on twitter: https://x.com/HuwGriffinRugby Learn more about your ad choices. Danny, Ugo and Chris are back together to discuss the nominees for the World Rugby Awards. Should Ardie Savea have made the shortlist for the Men's Player of the year? Who will be crowned Coach of the Year? The debate around the next England head coach has resurfaced after the RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said Eddie Jones' successor doesn't need to be English. So who would be the ideal candidate? And will Shaun Edwards ever join the England coaching set-up? They also assess what we've learnt from the autumns so far and look forward to the All Blacks visiting Twickenham.
The hardest man in the world to get hold of has finally given us an interview, and my god was it worth the wait. Paul Sackey a man who won the Premiership, Heineken Cup and was within a disallowed try of winning the World Cup spares no punches as he obliterates the sport of rugby and those he played with in an all revealing interview. He firstly offloads on us his disgust in the way his beloved Wasps has been handled, before attacking the RFU for the way they're ruining professional rugby - but when the pleasantries are seen to - its time for him to really offload. He quickly shares some wonderful memories of his great friend Shaun Edwards breaking one of his teammates noses during a party in a nightclub and also fond memories of partying the night away with the likes of David Haye and Claude Makelele - before revealing the shocking story behind why he got fired from Toulon. Paul saves the best till last however, when he tells an exclusive story never told before, that took place during the 2007 world cup - which will blow your mind into pieces!! -------- Right now, it's time to reclaim your health and arm your immune system with convenient, daily nutrition! In a nation of rugby heroes, Jamie Roberts has become a legend. Jamie Roberts is your quintessential hard man: a six-foot-four, 17-stone slab of rippling muscle, conditioned to run hard into other huge men in an arena where physical dominance is the prime currency. Yet away from rugby, he's a mild-mannered and thoughtful man - a qualified doctor with a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity about the world around him. It's an intriguing contradiction. In his first full season with the Cardiff Blues he was picked by new Wales coach Warren Gatland in the Grand Slam-winning side of 2008. He was still establishing his position in the national team when he toured with the 2009 Lions, emerging as Player of the Series. He went on to win 97 Test caps and play for clubs in Paris, London and Cape Town, yet his career has seldom been straightforward. A fractured skull was one of many injuries he had to overcome, and from the start he had to juggle the competing demands of university life and professional rugby. The joy of Six Nations success with Wales was balanced by heartbreak in the World Cup and disappointment against southern-hemisphere teams, while major trophies at club level proved frustratingly elusive. In this colourful and frank account of a sterling career, Jamie Roberts reveals all about life on tour, in boot camps and in dressing rooms filled with once-in-a-generation characters such as Mike Phillips, Andy Powell, Shaun Edwards, Martyn Williams, Brian O'Driscoll and Johnny Sexton. He also shares his views on concussion in rugby, the failings of the professional structure in Wales and the vital role of old-school team-bonding.
