On the night of July 14th, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid. In doing so, he helped create a legend and ensured that his legacy would forever be intertwined with the notorious outlaws. And let's be honest – it isn't that great of a legacy. Many consider Garrett a coward, at best, a no-good backstabbing Old West Judas who betrayed his friend for a handful of silver. Moreover, Pat is also labeled as a rank liar and an egomaniac. A glory seeker would turn on his mother if that meant earning a little dough and building up his reputation.  And, over 26 years after he gunned down The Kid, Pat himself would be shot and killed under similar circumstances. A murder that to this day remains unsolved. Who killed Pat Garrett? How accurate is the narrative surrounding the former Sheriff of Lincoln County? Is all the hate deserved? And who was Garrett anyway? What was his life like before he met the Kid? And what became of Pat in the decades following that fateful night at Fort Sumner? In the summer of 1881, Billy the Kid was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett. The lawman had been on the hunt ever since Billy broke out of jail in Lincoln and finally caught up to the bandit at Old Fort Sumner. It was around midnight, and Pat was waiting inside Pete Maxwell's darkened bedroom when the Kid stepped in. “Quien es?” Billy asked, noticing the large shape looming in the shadows. “Who is it?” Pat answered in the form of two shots from his 44-40 Colt revolver and just like that Billy the Kid was over. At least in his mortal form. His body may have been stuck in the ground the next day, but can't no pine box contain the legend that soon emerged. And make no mistake about it, Billy the Kid has taken on mythical proportions unrivaled by any other character of the old West over the decades that followed. But who was he REALLY? History of Billy the Kid by Charles A. Siringo audiobook. A cowboy outlaw whose youthful daring has never been equalled in the annals of criminal history. When a bullet pierced his heart he was less than twenty-two years of age, and had killed twenty-one men, Indians not included. The author feels that he is capable of writing a true and unvarnished history of "Billy the Kid," as he was personally acquainted with him, and assisted in his capture, by furnishing Sheriff Pat Garrett with three of his fighting cowboys--Jas. H. East, Lee Hall and Lon Chambers. The facts set down in this narrative were gotten from the lips of "Billy the Kid," himself, and from such men as Pat Garrett, John W. Poe, Kip McKinnie, Charlie Wall, the Coe Brothers, Tom O'Phalliard, Henry Brown, John Middleton, Martin Chavez, and Ash Upson. All these men took an active part, for or against, the "Kid." Ash Upson had known him from childhood, and was considered one of the family, for several years, in his mother's home. Other facts were gained from the lips of Mrs. Charlie Bowdre, who kept "Billy the Kid," hid out at her home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, after he had killed his two guards and escaped.

The outlaw Billy the Kid was allegedly killed at the age of 21 by Sheriff Pat Garrett in the year 1881. Skip ahead another 70 years and you have an elderly man known as Brushy Bill Roberts coming forward shattering the common historical narrative. He claimed to be the kid, said that he had escaped Pat Garrett all of them years before and had been living under the radar ever since. Brushy - with the help of an attorney named William V. Morrison - spent around two years compiling evidence, conducting interviews, researching, documenting all kinds of stuff for the purpose of both proving these claims and obtaining a pardon for Mr. Roberts; the same pardon that Billy the Kid was promised back in the day. Brushy was able to obtain a meeting with the then Governor of New Mexico but it was a no use. The whole ordeal was a media circus and Roberts ended up having a stroke right there in the Governor's mansion. Less than a month later on December 27th, 1950, Roberts would suffer a fatal heart attack and needless to say, the pardon never came. And we've been arguing about the man's true identity ever since! Brushy Bill has piqued my curiosity since I was a little kid, ever since I first watched Young Guns 2. My friends and I played Young Guns at recess. I owned more than one copy of the Bon Jovi Soundtrack over the years and I'm excited beyond words to see Young Guns part 3 on the big screen when it finally comes out – more on that towards the end of this episode. I can't stress this enough - I WANT Brushy Bill to be Billy the Kid. I truly do. I'm not some sort of wild west grinch just trying to suck the fun out of everything. It would be so cool if arguably the most famous outlaw of all time had really escaped death and lived to be an old man. If we could prove that it'd be massive! Unfortunately, I don't think it can be proven. Matter of fact, I'm pretty positive the opposite is true. It's my opinion that this episode will demonstrate, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Brushy Bill Roberts was NOT Billy the Kid. Abandon all hope and join me if you dare! On July 14, 1791, President George Washington appointed Thomas Johnson, who had been Maryland's first governor and who was a resident of Frederick, as an Associate Justice of The States Supreme Court of The Un ited States. On July 14, 1885, Samuel Heidelberger Rosenstock, who achieved great success in the canning industry in Frederick County, and who made countless contributions to local institutions and charities, was born in Baltimore. He died March 22, 1981, at his West Second Street home across from Baker Park. On July 14, 1902, fire heavily damaged the south wing of the Montevue Hospital, then two miles from Frederick. All city fire equipment and manpower took nearly an hour to arrive on the scene. The blaze began in a clothes room on the fifth floor. Damage was extensive on the south wing's fourth and fifth floors and the south tower. More than 125 “inmates” were evacuated, as was a great deal of the buildings' furnishings. Today in 1881, Billy the Kid was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Billy the Kid's real name? William H. Bonney Jr. Today in 1911, Harry N. Atwood landed an airplane on the lawn of the White House to accept an award from President William Taft. Today in 1946, Benjamin Spock published the book that would forever change the way Americans raised their children. The book was “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” and it is still one of the best-selling books in history. Today in 1951, the George Washington Carver National Monument in Joplin, Missouri, became the first national park to honor an African American. Today in 1965, the American space probe, the Mariner 4, flew by Mars, and sent back photographs of the planet. Today in 1966, Richard Speck brutally murdered eight student nurses in a Chicago dormitory. A ninth nurse survived the attack and later testified against him. Convicted of multiple murder in April 1967, Speck was sentenced to death a month later. The Supreme Court later overturned the sentence (on the basis that the sentence was unconstitutional) and Speck was ordered to serve consecutive life sentences that totaled more than 400 years. He only served 19 years of the term as he died of a massive heart attack in December 1991. Not surprisingly, no one claimed the body, which was later cremated with the ashes buried in an undisclosed location. Today in 1968, Hank Aaron hit his 500th career home run while with the Atlanta Braves. Today in 1976, Jimmy Carter won the Democratic Presidential nomination by an overwhelming margin at the party's convention in New York City. Today in 1981, the All-Star Game was postponed because of a 33-day-old baseball players strike. The game was finally played on August 9th. Today in 1983, House representative Daniel Crane of Illinois and Gerry Studds of Massachusetts admitted to having sex with congressional pages. Today in 1997, O.J. Simpson's California mansion was auctioned off for $2.6-million dollars. Today in 1998, the city of Los Angeles sued 15 tobacco companies for $2.5 billion over the dangers of secondhand smoke. Today in 1999, major league umpires voted to resign on September 2nd and not work the final month of the season in an effort to get more money. The strategy collapsed when baseball owners accepted the resignations of 22 umpires. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Does the spirit of Billy the Kid still haunt this earth? Billy the Kid is one of the famous (or infamous?) cowboys in history. But no matter what people think they know about him, the truth is hard to find. And many claim he didn’t really die by the hands of Sheriff Pat Garrett. And others claim to see his ghost to this day.  What is real when it comes to Billy the Kid? The post 067 Billy The Kid appeared first on Ghostly Podcast.

Did Pat Garrett kill Billy the Kid? It was a moonlit night in Ft. Sumner, NM when history tells us that Sheriff Pat Garrett shot down the notorious outlaw Billy “the Kid”. Newspapers across the country quickly reported that the Kid was dead and Garrett quickly put the body in the ground. But rumors spread that the Kid had survived and the testimony of Garrett’s posse was contradictory about how, exactly, the shooting had gone down. Nevertheless, without evidence, the story of the heroic Sheriff stood for almost 70 years. Then, in 1950, an old man from Hico, TX petitioned the governor of New Mexico for a pardon for crimes he committed as Billy the Kid. No one took him seriously, and yet the old man was an exact match in physical characteristics and knew intimate details about the Kid’s life. He also knew details about the fateful shooting the night Garrett claimed to have shot him that had been erased by history. Details, for example, that Garrett had killed his very drunk bearded half-Mexican partner, a claim that has only recently been verified by modern research. It has been said that the living write history and not the dead, but when one returns from the dead, so to speak, that which was lost to history is restored. This is the true story of Billy the Kid, complete with new evidence that he lived to a ripe old age and died a free man. THE STORY In 1882 the notorious outlaw Jesse Evans, a childhood friend of Billy the Kid and a participant in the Lincoln County War, walked out of jail after serving a sentence for killing a Texas ranger. Jesse walked out of prison a free man and disappeared, never to be heard from again. Never, that is, until 1949 when Jesse came out of hiding after almost 60 years to claim an inheritance left to him by his brother. In the course of proving his identity to a court, Jesse told some amazing stories of his time when he was an outlaw but his biggest revelation of all was that his good friend Billy the Kid was still alive. Jesse led a young lawyer named William Morrison to an old man named not William H. Bonney but William H. Roberts who after some consideration finally agreed to come forward and reveal himself as Billy the Kid. He agreed to this on one condition- that the lawyer helps him obtain the pardon he was promised by the Governor but never received so he could die a free man. You see, Billy the Kid was still wanted for murder and was condemned to hang. To reveal himself was to risk arrest and death. This was a risk that William H. Roberts was willing to take. He sat down with Mr. Morrison and told his story. This book contains that story. It is the one true autobiography of Billy the Kid. A story that aside from some definite highlights and adventures that one would expect from the Kid, was remarkable normal and focused on his skill breaking horses as much or as more as his skill as a gunslinger. Billy the Kid was, in fact, just a gifted young cowhand who found himself juxtaposed against corrupt officials and lawmen at what became a key moment in American History. Before one dismisses Mr. Roberts it should be considered that 5 living acquaintances of Billy the Kid, aside from Mr. Evans who revealed him, were willing to sign legal affidavits that Mr. Roberts was the man they knew as Billy the Kid. Further, the new photographic comparison shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were the same man. Mr. Roberts' story became the inspiration for the opening scene in the hit movie "Young Guns II" starring Emilio Estevez as Billy the Kid. Also, Consider that Pat Garrett was denied his reward for killing the kid for many months and that only a special act of the legislature allowed him to finally receive it. All of this and more is contained in this book. Thanks to Mr. Morrison each of us can now pull up a chair, sit down across from Billy the Kid, and listen as he shares his story. Guess what day it is, Tuesday AKA new podcast day!  Our review today is a film that is being overshadowed by Captain Marvel, The Kid based around you guessed it Billy the Kid.  Side topics include why don’t we have more western films today, Old Tucson Studios, and of course Clint Eastwood. The Kid is a mediocre movie at best.  The acting is decent, the sets are great, and the cinematography shines at moments.  Ethan Hawke and Dane DeHann do adequate jobs as Sheriff Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.  They are not their best roles in a film but not horrible either. Chris Pratt as a villain was great except for the lack of appearances.  His character is literally in the film for maybe 15 minutes tops. Both Mike and Matt really would have liked to see what Pratt could do give enough screen time as a villain.  The biggest problem with this film is the story. It is very unique and a different take on a story that has been told several times over but it is not a great. Both Matt and Mike agree if you have already seen Captain Marvel go catch this film.  It is entertaining and fun and there really is not a whole of films in theaters right now. They both give 2019’s The Kid 3 out of 5 Reels.
