See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps men's and women's, the Canadian Premier League, League 1 BC and more. To begin, they dive into the latest out of the Whitecaps men's side, who advanced to the Round of 32 of the 2024 Leagues Cup, where they were promptly eliminated by Mexican giants Pumas UNAM. They look at what that result means for the team, and what they can learn going forward, as they now tackle a short break ahead of the resumption of their 2024 MLS season. Then, from there, they dive into the latest off the field for the Whitecaps, who made one signing before the end of the Canadian transfer window but might not be done yet when it comes to adding to their squad, and they look at why that is the case. Continuing on, they take a look at the big news out of the Whitecaps women's program, as their League 1 BC side had quite the couple of weeks, winning the League 1 BC playoffs, the League 1 Canada interprovincial championships and then their preliminary round game of the inaugural 2024-2025 Concacaf W Champions Cup. In particular, that last point is key, as that means they've now made the group stage of that tournament, in which they'll play some of the top teams in the world such as the San Diego Wave and the Portland Thorns, along with Liga MX side Club América and Panamanian side Santa Fé, over the next few months. Ahead of the launch of the NSL next spring, of which the Whitecaps are one of the founding members, it's a massive opportunity for them, and they dive into why. After that, they dive into the latest out of the two BC CPL teams, who had a bit of a strange week, as they first played each other in the latest Salish Sea Derby, won by Vancouver for a fifth straight edition, before making a trade with each other. They dive into that latest game, and then dissect the trade, seeing what it means for both sides respective playoff hopes. Lastly, they dive into the latest out of League 1 BC after that circuit's 2024 season recently came into an end, seeing what stood out from an entertaining final weekend out at Swangard Stadium, where the Whitecaps were crowned women's playoff champions and the TSS Rovers were crowned men's playoff champions. In 1570's New Kingdom of Granada (modern Colombia), a new generation of mestizo (half-Spanish, half-indigenous) men sought positions of increasing power in the colony's two largest cities. In response, Spanish nativist factions zealously attacked them as unequal and unqualified, unleashing an intense political battle that lasted almost two decades. At stake was whether membership in the small colonial community and thus access to its most lucrative professions should depend on limpieza de sangre (blood purity) or values-based integration (Christian citizenship). Max Deardoff's A Tale of Two Granadas: Custom, Community, and Citizenship in the Spanish Empire, 1568–1668 (Cambridge University Press, 2023) examines the vast, trans-Atlantic transformation of political ideas about subjecthood that ultimately allowed some colonial mestizos and indios ladinos (acculturated natives) to establish urban citizenship alongside Spaniards in colonial Santafé de Bogotá and Tunja. In a spirit of comparison, it illustrates how some of the descendants of Spain's last Muslims appealed to the same new conceptions of citizenship to avoid disenfranchisement in the face of growing prejudice. We've only gone and done a bonus episode! An audio addendum to our LA season this year, The Last Bohemians hopped over to Santa Fé to meet the one and only Julia Cameron. Our series is dedicated to creative women who've lived their lives outside the norm. Julia Cameron has spent hers guiding others, with her world-beating creativity manual The Artist's Way. Very sadly, Julia had just lost her beloved dog when we arrived one afternoon in 2022. But she soldiered on regardless. It's a whistlestop tour through her early days, breaking into the boys club of 1970s journalism alongside Hunter S Thompson, through her wild thirties in Hollywood married to Martin Scorsese, and eventually how she turned her life around by relocating to Georgia O'Keefe country, with its endlessly inspiring dramatic desert landscapes. In this special episode, we enter Julia's writing room to talk about addiction and recovery, harnessing the creativity spirit, sexism and psychic powers, how she helped to write Taxi Driver, inspiration and motivation, her friendship with Eve Babitz and much more. For more, Julia Cameron's memoir Floor Sample was rereleased in the UK in summer 2022. CREDITS Presenter and Exec Producer: Kate Hutchinson Editor: Georgie Rogers Photography and recording: Anna Kooris With thanks to Anna-Maria Fitzgerald, Nick and Didi at Meow Wolf. The Last Bohemians theme music by Pete Cunningham, Ned Pegler and Caradog Jones. ABOUT THE LAST BOHEMIANS Journalist and broadcaster Kate Hutchinson launched The Last Bohemians in 2019, pairing the audio with stunning portraits by photographer Laura Kelly. It featured 86-year-old Molly Parkin's stories of self-pleasuring, LSD countess Amanda Feilding's trepanning tales and Pamela Des Barres' reflections on supergroupiedom. The series won silver for Best New Podcast at the 2020 British Podcast Awards and was a finalist at the 2021 Audio Production Awards. Season two featured folk legend Judy Collins; British fashion icon Zandra Rhodes, dealing with the aftermath of losing her lover while celebrating 50 years in fashion; anarcho-punk innovator and illustrator Gee Vaucher; and the controversial witch at the heart of the 1970s occult boom, Maxine Sanders. In 2021, The Last Bohemians launched a lockdown special with performance artist Marina Abramović; it returned in 2022 with the UK's greatest living painter, Maggi Hambling, as well as Bowie's former best friend Dana Gillespie and theatre actor Cleo Sylvestre, and launched an LA series, supported by Audio-Technica, and starring Angelyne, Betye Saar, Gloria Hendry and more. thelastbohemians.co.uk patreon.com/thelastbohemians instagram.com/thelastbohemianspod twitter.com/thelastbohospod

—¿Qué vas a hacer tú? —le preguntó Dagmar a Julio. —No lo sé —respondió Julio—. Almorzar, supongo. Tengo hambre.
