This episode Squatch, Nate and Connie alongside our homies Not Nice Guy and the Raptilian from the Strangebrew Podcast join us for this special episode where we skipped the videos and headlines this week and watched the cinematic masterpiece that is Shindler's List.
In our final regular podcast of the year, we speak to the legendary Nicola Walker (26:53) about The Split: Barcelona, as well as Harlan Coben and Nicola Shindler (1:28:19) for Netflix's Missing You. Plus, we go all festive and sift through some of the great telly coming your way over the Christmas period, including A Ghost Story For Christmas (1:44:29), The Christmas episode of Doctor Who (1:49:06), and the latest season of Steven Knight's SAS: Rogue Heroes (1:55:26). We also find time to open Santa's sack and answer your questions in a bumper Christmas postbag, before signing off for a little chocolate-assisted R&R. Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. On the latest episode of the podcast, Jamie suspects that streaming service Tubie and Shaquille O'Neal are trying to make her give up the vegan lifestyle, Doug wats the Shindler's List opening credits to involve more karate, and we both wonder if our terrible foreign accents should be seen as offensive or just an accurate representation of the performance. To mark the start of LGBTQ+ History Month the ITV Pridecast is back and joining Liam McConkey for this episode is none other than screenwriter Russell T Davies and TV producer Nicola Shindler. The duo have worked on an array of dramas together including, Queer as folk and It's a Sin. Now they're back working on the muchly anticipated ITVX mini series, Nolly.Davies and Shindler are known for giving a voice to characters who are often stripped of it and this couldn't be more true of Nolly. Noele Gordon, played by multi-award winning actor, Helena Bonham Carter, was the star of the hit soap opera, Crossroads. At the height of her career and the show's success, Nolly, without any warning was unceremoniously axed from the soap. She never found out why she was sacked by the bosses at ATV, but it was a decision made by a group of male executives, towards a woman working at a time of dreadful sexism. For Nolly, it must have been a bitter blow, especially after all she did in helping to set up ATV and what we now call daytime television. Said to be a pioneer of her day, Nolly was also a history-maker in that she was the first woman on TV to interview a British Prime Minister and has even been credited as the first woman to be seen on colour TV. Now Davies and Shindler want to shine a light on what happened to Nolly and remind people of the important part she played in the development of British Television. Nolly is available to stream on ITVX from Thursday 2nd February. During this ITV Pridecast, Liam also chats with Davies and Shindler about some of their other productions and the impact they've had on the LGBTQ+ community. The pair first worked together over two decades ago when they produced the groundbreaking hit Queer as folk. The Channel 4 series told the story of three gay men living around Manchester's Canal Street and showed the fun experienced by many people visiting the city's gay village at that time.Fast forward two decades and Davies and Shindler worked together to write and produce the incredibly moving, It's a Sin. The series depicts the lives of a group of gay men who move to London during the 1980s and live through the crisis brought on by HIV/AIDs. It received critical acclaim for its incredibly powerful scenes and its accurate depiction of the epidemic. The show which aired on Channel 4 at the start of 2021, led to an upsurge in HIV testing and has done amazing things to open up the conversation about the virus. Both Queer as Folk and It's a Sin are available to stream on both Channel 4 and Netlfix.

TYH Nation PresentsEMUNAH AT WORKMoshe Shindler------------------------He was in yeshiva, about to join the workforce: "I had friends going into real estate, I had friends going into nursing homes, and these guys… they would make in 15 minutes what I would make schlepping tripods for a year! But I said: it makes no difference. It has nothing do with the industry. Do what you love, and the rest is up to the Ribono Shel Olam." The world at large values "hustle culture," emphasizing that long, hard work with extreme sacrifice sees ultimate results. But does Yiddishkeit agree with this concept? Do we pick up that phone call when we're with our family? Today, Moshe takes us through his own journey, that elusive balance between work-related affairs and ruchnius, and together, we'll find the answer to these questions. In this week's episode, we sat down with Moshe Schindler, Director of Productions at Mint Media, and dive into questions that many find perplexing, and a hard-won balance. What is bitachon and hishtadlus? Where do they intersect and how much of both do we need? Is there ever too much hishtadlus, and how do we manage to stay fully present, without the lure of work in the background? Inside, Moshe tells over a fantastic comparison, and shares with us why he feels so blessed with success. But there never is an end, and even when we achieve our dreams, there needs to be a balance. "By nature, we can't stay still. Because if we do, we'll go backwards," Moshe says. The hard part is the balancing act. This masterful episode will take you through Moshe's own life-transforming techniques, and perhaps, take you on a journey of self-discovery, too. As Laibel says, "space allows us to stop, and see where we're going" "This is when I live! Everything else will dance around it." —Moshe Schindler------------------------Listen on Apple Podcast: https://l.tyhnation.com/3N2Npby Listen on Spotify: https://l.tyhnation.com/3O1wQg8 Listen to more episodes https://tyhnation.com/pages/emunah-at-work ------------------------Emunah is the core of our identity as a nation with 3,000+ years of putting our complete faith in One Above, but nowhere are its inherent challenges and apparent impediments more pertinent than in the realm of parnassah. Aging is part of life – that's a fact. Now, what if you could extend your lifespan by another 10 years and still be living the best version of yourself? You've probably heard of stem cell therapy and maybe a few controversies around that, but not a lot of people truly understand the depths of it. Today's guest, Greg Shindler, is going to give us some clarity around this breakthrough. Greg Shindler is the CEO of RMI International (Regenerative Medicine Institute), a company that's forging the path to revolutionizing the longevity industry. It's the idea that we can turn back our biological age and put a gap between that and our chronological age – an idea now coming to fruition. And so, you could be 80 years old and still feel like you're 30. Let's go in-depth! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: [01:10] Greg's career background [06:32] His transition from medical distributorship to stem cell regenerative therapy [10:38] Why an office in Costa Rica, not the U.S. [17:05] Is stem cell therapy the magic pill? [19:41] Different ways to harvest stem cells [22:48] How the stem cell therapy process works [24:16] Targeting aging or functional decline [25:33] An example of cellular reprogramming or restoration [26:50] Extending the lifespan at least a decade [30:08] Dealing with detractors Notable quotes from the Episode: "All of us are born with a finite stem cell stem cell pool… It's in a state of decline from the moment we're born until the moment we die." “Embryonic stem cells are not used, they're unpredictable, and you can't control what they're going to become – so you don't use them in stem cell therapies.” “Lifestyle is a big deal. Sure. You've got to sleep well, eat right, exercise – and that is a big, big piece of the battle.” "Aging is defined as the functional decline of most living organisms over a period of time. If we can slow the functional decline, meaning our cognition, the way we move and think and be able to get around in life, then that's huge. That's a win.” "You try to address the detractors, you know, to the best that you can, but you don't let it be a distraction from you." "At the end of the day, humanity wins. And if we keep that in the windshield, that's what's important."

In the Sword and Trowel, Spurgeon wrote, -We are glad that the article upon 'The Down Grade' has excited notice.- Our warfare is with men who are giving up the atoning sacrifice, denying the inspiration of Holy Scripture, and casting slurs upon justification by faith.- That summer Spurgeon wrote further on Shindler's theme. Controversy developed, Spurgeon became the focal point of the charges, and the Baptist Union, which was bitterly divided over the question, ultimately voted to censure him.

Today Ian welcomes Ryan Shindler from triARC architecture and design and founder of CoShape. Ryan shares a bit about his background and what brought him to the career of an architect. Ian comments how the methods of building houses have not changed and Ryan explains how many buildings are constructed to fit the budget and not to enhance human experience and feelings. Ryan also talks more about how focusing on human experience would be very beneficial for houses and other structures we live and work in. Ian and Ryan both talk a bit about the impacts of architecture and how it can personally affect the people and Ryan provides a few examples of how housing spaces could be made to be more experience comfortable. Ryan also explains how past cultures did architecture and why people admire buildings from ancient eras. Ryan and Ian talk more about how shopping centers have been capitalizing on changing up small details that make the customers feel a certain way. Ryan concludes the episode by sharing some final thoughts on the topic. Parts: Guest Intro (0:07) Old Methods Die Hard (2:28) Focus on Experience (11:33) Impact of Architecture (19:08) A Lesson From the Past (22:50) Small Changes Matter (30:00) Final Thoughts (38:14) About Ryan Shindler: Ryan is passionate about elevating the built environment to a layer that inherently supports and improves our lives. With his background in both architecture and research, he takes a multi-scale systems thinking approach in bringing this dream to life. His approach synthesizes building planning, research, design, and construction to foster better outcomes. Quantifying the impact space has on the human experience and applying design strategies grounded in science and research is a huge part of his work. "Let's choose to ask more from our surroundings." The second novel from the author of The Burning Men, featuring Di Alex Fin and Dci Mattie Paulsen. Leave your daughter with me, or I will kill you both. It felt like any other evening before Karl and his daughter were ambushed by a figure in a blank mask. A knife is put to her throat and Karl is forced to make an impossible decision. Stay and die, or walk away and take this thug's word that they will both live. Should he trust a villain and leave his daughter with a knife at her throat? Could he ever live with himself if he did? It's not long before more seemingly unconnected and innocent people across London are offered a deal in exchange for their life. More blood is spilled, more families shattered and more people are left to suffer with the consequences of their decisions. The fire crew make a fateful decision; leave the man, take the money, quit the service and never speak of this again. But five years later one of them is set alight in the toilets at his own wedding. Soon after, a second is found in the burnt out remains of his Maserati, nothing but a smoking corpse. It appears that someone knows what they did. And there are still three firemen left to go. . . DI Alex Finn and DC Mattie Paulsen are an unlikely pairing, but they need to discover who is behind these killings before the last man burns. This is first in Will Shindler's Finn and Paulsen series - a British detective series that ranks with Mark Billingham, M.J. Arlidge, Staurt Macbride.

Letters to my kids: A suicide survivor's lessons and advice for life
Episode 38 - Part 1: working and getting sucked in without considering your future and/or value Music: “Just A Blip” by Andy G. CohenFrom the Free Music ArchiveReleased under a Creative Commons Attribution International License - Are you in a job where the only way to move up is to get out? Is your role becoming obsolete, as the skills required are being replaced by technology? Are your colleagues given opportunities that you’re not? If you answered yes to any of the above, there’s a good chance your career has come to a standstill. That’s right; you’re stuck in a dead-end job. "Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay." -Simone de Beauvoir - Almost everyone experiences this at some point in their career, says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and author of Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant; How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job. “It is often difficult at first to discern if you’re in a stagnant position. The realization rarely happens overnight because oftentimes the employee has offered to take on more challenging assignments, but that falls on deaf ears. After hitting enough walls, however, you realize that those efforts and energy could be better placed toward a new job search.” Here are 20 tell-tale signs that you’re stuck in a dead-end job: - Your work offers no change in routine; it’s very mechanical. This is perhaps what you’d be doing five years from now, and your career goals do not align with what you currently do. - If your position feels static and you don’t see a way to earn further responsibilities or get ahead even after offering ideas on the subject, you’re probably in a dead-end job. - Your skills are not being tapped. Your supervisor doesn’t tap into your skills set or go beyond what you’ve been contributing for quite some time. You may have been passed over for promotion – or your requests to take on more challenging projects have been ignored. - They’re not interested in your career goals. You are not being asked about your professional goals or future plans "The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power." -Mary Pickford - They don’t support your career plan. You are asked about your goals and plans, but the boss pays no attention to them or doesn’t support you in reaching them. - You’re subject to unfair treatment. You notice your colleagues are getting opportunities you don’t get, says David Shindler, author of Learning to Leap and founder of social learning site, The Employability Hub. - You’re not challenged. You feel unchallenged by your job, your boss, or your co-workers with no welcome avenue to change things, Reynolds says. - Your thoughts and contributions are not valued. Your voice is no longer heard and your opinions are no longer valued, Shindler adds. - You can’t get time with the boss to move projects forward. Your projects seem to get lost in the abyss. Essentially, you are being ignored out of a job; e-mails go unanswered and you’re lucky if you catch your boss in the restroom. "The best way to predict the future is to create it." -Abraham Lincoln - No change in pay, title or tasks. You have been doing the same work for more than one or two years without a promotion, increase in pay, or increased responsibility. While some people may enjoy working on the same tasks, a tell-tale sign of a dead-end job is employees who are not being offered advancement or new training. - You get that Monday morning feeling nearly every day. What you used to enjoy doing is no longer enjoyable. No enthusiasm to get up and go to work is a sign you’re in a dead-end job. - Attempts to change or improve your job are not welcomed. If you’ve tried reinventing yourself at the company, modifying your job description or proposed a lateral move to no avail, then it’s time to look elsewhere. - Your values and the firm’s values are not aligned. Maybe there are cultural differences; clashes in environmental aspects of its operations; civic responsibility or work ethic issues, et cetera. You’re not an asset to your team or department. You don’t feel like an important part of your team. "To be truly positive in the eyes of some, you have to risk appearing negative in the eyes of others." -Criss Jami - They hire outside talent. You realize that the corporate culture is to bring in outside talent when high-level positions open up, instead of promoting from within - You see favoritism or bias in management practices. If you’re not on their good side, you’ll probably be stuck doing what you are doing without any promotion in sight. - Your employer is sinking. You research and discover your company is not doing well. Profits are stagnant or down. The industry is not growing. Also, if your company is conducting numerous layoffs, and your desk is looking too clean from a lack of projects due to no fault of your own, you might be in a dead-end job.

The ones who only react when they are offended 3. The ones who give to charity in either situation [7:176] Had we willed, we could have elevated him therewith, but he insisted on sticking to the ground, and pursued his own opinions. Thus, he is like the dog; whether you pet him or scold him, he pants. Such is the example of people who reject our proofs. Narrate these narrations, that they may reflect. It is good to speak up, but it shouldn’t be the only time we react is to an external stimulus This is the difference between a thermometer and a thermostat Thermometer only reacts to the external environment Thermostat adjusts the settings of the environment If we are only going through life reacting to events then we are just being a thermometer This isn’t bad, but it shouldn’t be our end destination. Think of these moments as our call to action. David vs. Goliath Example of Moses Kills a man Almost kills a person again Comes back as a change agent Rather than just getting mad at the person who is saying these terrible things about the poor. Go and give to the poor. [2:274] Those who give to charity night and day, secretly and publicly, receive their recompense from their Lord; they will have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve. [3:92] You cannot attain righteousness until you give to charity from the possessions you love. Whatever you give to charity, GOD is fully aware thereof. [25:63] The worshipers of the Most Gracious are those who tread the earth gently, and when the ignorant speak to them, they only utter peace. [84:19] You will move from stage to stage. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. [3:175] It is the devil's system to instill fear into his subjects. Do not fear them and fear Me instead, if you are believers. The devil wants to fear, to incite, to get you outraged But fear and outrage are not virtues The question is what do you do when you experience them? 7 stages of grief Shock & Denial Pain & guilt Anger & bargaining Depression, reflection, loneliness The upward turn Reconstruction and working through Acceptance and hope Why so angry? Same thing we go from fear to love of God. [72:13] " `When we heard the guidance, we believed therein. Anyone who believes in his Lord will never fear any injustice, nor any affliction. Injustice only exists if you don’t believe in a Hereafter [4:79] Anything good that happens to you is from GOD, and anything bad that happens to you is from you. We have sent you as a messenger to the people, and GOD suffices as witness. It is easier to destroy than to build ************************************ Why do people like spicy food? Believed to originally be because to mask the taste of food particularly meat that was not fresh. Found that in climates the more hot the more the use of spices in their recipes But this for the most part no longer applies as we have plenty of access to fresh meat by means of refrigeration yet I don’t think there is a decline in human desire towards spicy food With the exception of the tree shrews, I don’t think there is any other mammal that has a fondness of spicy food https://www.mnn.com/food/healthy-eating/stories/man-is-the-only-animal-to-find-pleasure-in-the-pain-of-peppers https://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/science/21peppers.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2&ref=science https://www.thrillist.com/health/nation/what-makes-some-people-like-spicy-food-and-others-hate-it And the only reason that tree shrews like particular chili peppers is because they have a mutation that lowers the sensitivity to the compound that gives spicy food that burning sensation in all other mammals. Dr. Paul Bloom: “How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like,” First we do it because we see other people doing it Then since we do it we convince ourselves that we like it Then we start actually liking it Then we want more and more of it to the point that regular food just tastes bland without it This shows how we can train ourselves to like unpalatable things This can be true for much of what we do. Outrage associate the feeling with excitement Animals, for the most part, don’t get angry (monkey grapes and cucumbers experiment) Outrage is a learned behavior Entice / provoke - devils tool [17:64] "You may entice them with your voice, and mobilize all your forces and all your men against them, and share in their money and children, and promise them. Anything the devil promises is no more than an illusion. How cheap is your happiness? When we get angry and stay in a state of anger we are showing that we are doubting God’s promise… [4:85] Whoever mediates a good deed receives a share of the credit thereof, and whoever mediates an evil work, incurs a share thereof. GOD controls all things. Outrage has a social contagion effect Pepsi commercial - Kendall Jenner https://player.fm/series/what-really-happened-1638434/kendall-jenner-the-anatomy-of-an-advertising-disaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA5Yq1DLSmQ How anger affects judgment - we make worse decisions The average person didn’t think it was that bad between 18 - 29 years old 50% said it gave them a positive view of Pepsi, 26% less positive. 24% neutral Experiment with music Gave people a list of songs in one group they were told certain songs were liked more than the other and the other group was told the opposite Netflix got rid of the star review system with a simple thumbs up or down. The reason is that everyone says they like movies like Shindler’s list and not Adam Sandler movies, but their viewing habits show otherwise. We weigh negative critiques more than positive. If someone tells you the food at somewhere is bad who is more likely not to go there? The one who went there and experienced that bad food or the one who never went there? Need 10 positive reviews for each negative review What message are we putting out to the world? [9:15] He will also remove the rage from the believers' hearts. GOD redeems whomever He wills. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise. [5:2] O you who believe, do not violate the rites instituted by GOD, nor the Sacred Months, nor the animals to be offered, nor the garlands marking them, nor the people who head for the Sacred Shrine (Ka'bah) seeking blessings from their Lord and approval. Once you complete the pilgrimage, you may hunt.* Do not be provoked into aggression by your hatred of people who once prevented you from going to the Sacred Masjid. You shall cooperate in matters of righteousness and piety; do not cooperate in matters that are sinful and evil. You shall observe GOD. GOD is strict in enforcing retribution. We have limited time and limited brain capacity are you going to focus on the things that make you mad or the the things to be grateful for? If you look at the world from a perspective of gratitude, looking to see joy and happiness, the brain will translate that joy and happiness into chemistry, such as a dopamine release from feeling pleasure. Molecules of emotion - peptides and receptors - feedback loop Happiness: Now and Forever* [10:62] Absolutely, GOD's allies have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve. [10:63] They are those who believe and lead a righteous life. [10:64] For them, joy and happiness in this world, as well as in the Hereafter. This is GOD's unchangeable law. Such is the greatest triumph. Every time you focus on gratitude, you’re helping combat depression and anxiety by minimizing your cortisol production. https://qz.com/1463947/the-science-behind-the-health-benefits-of-a-daily-gratitude-practice/ Boredom is when our attention has been so dulled that we need some external stimuli to keep our mind occupied - sensationalization of our external stimuli dulls our senses - need outrage to keep us entertained We would rather electrocute ourselves than spend time in our own thoughts. This was demonstrated in a controversial 2014 study in which 67 per cent of male participants and 25 per cent of female participants opted to give themselves unpleasant electric shocks rather than spend 15 minutes in peaceful contemplation. Meditation is the act of getting back to baseline and being aware of your thoughts your surroundings being present - put things in perspective

Guest Bio: (From an Article Featured on Ryortho)Members of the broader orthopedic community are famous for leaping into action when disaster strikes. When earthquakes decimated Haiti, dozens of orthopedists, nurses, and even sales reps and executives volunteered to help. And, without fanfare, hundreds of people in the broader orthopedic community volunteer their time, instruments, implants, machines and other resources to go to remote corners of the world to provide free care to those who need it the most. But the story of Radd Berrett, a 51-year-old retired orthopedic industry executive, is truly one of a kind.Berrett, a single father, had just sold his neuromonitoring company, his orthopedic distributorship and his MRI facility in 2014 and was ready to retire—or at least shift into low gear. But fate had other plans. As Berrett told OTW, “I attended a political event with my friend Sean Reyes, who is now the Attorney General of Utah. They had set aside time for a man named Tim Ballard, a former CIA and Homeland Security Agent who had started an international child sex slavery rescue organization—Operation Underground Railroad. (O.U.R. Rescue). After listening to Tim's compelling stories of children in horrible situations who could indeed be saved, I was hooked.”A few weeks later Radd Berrett saw a private screening of a film called The Abolitionists. Made by Gerald Molen, the producer of Shindler's List, the film tells the story of Tim Ballard and his operatives on their first mission. “It ripped my heart out, ” says Berrett. “Over the next few months, I got to know Tim and asked how I could help. ‘Join the jump team, ' he said.”A jump team is a rugged group of individuals—many of whom are former SEALS, CIA, and FBI agents—who head into situations where children are being trafficked for sex. Radd Berrett: “Seven months later and countless hours of training I am now a member of the ‘jump team.' I also serve as the Director of Corporate Affairs.”Part rescuer, part actor, Berrett works with the team to set up sting operations to apprehend the traffickers. “We pose as wealthy businessmen who fly in for sex parties. And our people never go into any country without involving the local and/or federal police. This all has to be ‘by the book' because these people have to be prosecuted. Everything is filmed and our team is all mixed up.”“The trainers always say that they can train us on tactics, but that we have to be in a specific mental ‘space' in order to go undercover and act like a pedophile. Most of the ex-military guys just want to reach over and rip the trafficker's head off, so obviously, they have to work through that in order to do follow the script.”“We have decades of combined undercover sting experience. When doing the setups we make it clear to the traffickers that our guys are wealthy, high profile people, and that safety and anonymity are critical. We make sure they know that if any of their people show up with weapons, drugs, or recording devices then the deal is off. Our people pat everyone down, so no one has ever pulled a weapon on us. We have established ‘safe' words and a ‘panic' word. And in the end, to preserve our cover, we are handcuffed and thrown to the ground with everyone else. The local and/or federal police then get to take credit for the bust.”According to the organization's founder, Tim Ballard, “In order to dismantle these trafficking rings, we do our research, coordinate with local authorities, rescue the children, make sure the perpetrators are arrested, and then ensure long-term care for the children. We monitor the prosecutions and engage in the training of local forces so that they are ready for future missions. And because we are a private agency, we are free from the burdens of bureaucracy.”Saved Over 300 ChildrenTo date, Operation Underground Railroad has saved well over 300 children and apprehended 48 sex traffickers; missions have been carried out in 12 countries, including the U.S.Berrett says, “Our most resounding successes have been in Columbia, where the authorities are very receptive, motivated, and glad to have help in fighting the child sex trafficking problem. We have worked with the federal government there on the several occasions; at one point three of their top undercover agents and two psychotherapists came to the U.S. and spent a week undergoing forensic and other kinds of training.”“The most astounding things are the statistics. The fact that the majority of demand for child sex emanates from the U.S. and Canada is disconcerting. There is a huge volume of child porn that drives child sex slavery. However, we are building software to help law enforcement identify and catch pedophiles.”Asked if they were ever unable to take a mission to the point of prosecution, Berrett says, “The very first undercover operation I did was in Haiti. A few weeks prior, a Christian aid group was bringing in supplies and someone in their group brought a drone to film them helping the children. Well, during this time, someone on their team set the drone down to make some adjustments…and all the while it was filming. By chance, it caught images of a man raping a 4-year-old boy (and there were accomplices). The aid group sent us these images and we presented the video to a judge. He gave us the green light to go undercover and get the guy, which we did. In the end, however, once we were all in the courtroom the child's mother would not press charges. The judge let him go right in front of us.”One extremely successful mission took an unexpectedly positive turn, says Berrett. “There were 53 kids in a horrific facility fronting as an orphanage; they were all for sale. We set up a sting to pay $7, 500 each for two children…a brother and sister who were 4 and 5 years old. That little boy leapt into one of my colleague's arms…it was like he knew he was there to save him. We were able to rescue all of the children…and my jump team partner and his wife are adopting that little boy, as well as his sister.”True Heroes, Massive HeartsRadd Berrett wasn't prepared for the effect that O.U.R. would have on him. “After one mission we had gotten the kids settled in with people running a safe, loving orphanage. My teammates and I spent three hours there playing with the kids…running and jumping and having so much fun laughing with them. Then it came time to leave. The kids were all smiles, but my heart was tearing. I forgot that there was a GoPro camera in the car and it caught me crying like I haven't cried in 30 years. They were fundamentally tears of joy for these children. Overall, I have never done more emotionally satisfying work.”Sean Reyes, Attorney General of Utah, has nothing but praise for his friend who jumped into the fray to help little ones. “Radd Berrett has taken the same drive, dedication and work ethic that made him a success in the business community to become an effective force in fighting human trafficking. He has given selflessly of his time and money to disrupt this evil practice not only in the U.S. but around the world. He has become an integral player in the liberation of thousands of little boys and girls from the clutches of child sex trafficking rings. And he has shown an incredible gift for helping survivors of these atrocities on their long road to recovery and healing. We need more men and women with the character and compassion of Radd Berrett to be effective in our global battle against the evil scourge of sex trafficking.”

This week on StoryWeb: The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Who could turn the world on with her smile? Mary Tyler Moore, of course! Those of us who loved Mary Tyler Moore and her pioneering work as an actress and comedian were not surprised to hear of her passing last week – but we were sad nevertheless. Moore, who was 80 when she died, had fought Type 1 diabetes and its complications since she was 33. Moore’s television career started with her role as “Happy Hotpoint,” a dancing elf on Hotpoint appliance commercials that ran during the Ozzie and Harriet TV series. She also had minor roles in television and movies during the 1950s. Moore’s big breakthrough came in her role as Laura Petrie, wife to comedy writer Robert Petrie, on The Dick Van Dyke Show. As the show ran from 1961 to 1996, Moore became as famous for her portrayal of the dancer-turned-homemaker as she did for her fashion sense. Her form-fitting capri pants quickly became iconic, just as popular as Jackie Kennedy’s dresses. But it was as TV newsroom associate producer Mary Richards that Mary Tyler Moore really made her mark. I was hooked from the first episode, which aired in 1970 when I was ten years old. I can vividly recall watching that episode in my parents’ bedroom, where the extra TV was kept. My parents were watching something else out in the living room, but I had the good sense to be watching the premiere of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which had been advertised heavily in the weeks leading up to its debut. I remember laughing out loud at Mr. Grant’s grilling of Mary during her job interview. I laughed so hard, in fact, that my mother came to see what was going on. Eventually, I convinced my parents to watch the show as well. Saturday nights would never be the same. Like many girls and women across the United States, I loved everything that Mary represented. She was single and independent. She worked in the male-dominated world of TV news. And she had a way-too-groovy apartment. I grew into adolescence with Mary Tyler Moore, and I set my sights on the life she led. I longed to be a writer and live on my own – and there on TV was Mary Richards, making it after all. My dear friend Jennifer Soule and I share a lifelong love of all things Mary Tyler Moore. In addition to visiting her Minneapolis haunts on one weekend getaway (complete with throwing our hats up in the air on a downtown street), we were also fortunate enough to meet her. Moore’s ancestors were among the early residents of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where Jennifer and I taught at Shepherd College. Moore’s great-great-great-grandfather, Conrad Shindler, owned a house on German Street (the main street in Shepherdstown). Like most of the other buildings in Shepherdstown, Shindler’s house took in wounded Confederate soldiers during 1862’s Battle of Antietam (across the Potomac River in Sharpsburg, Maryland). In 1995, Mary Tyler Moore donated the house to Shepherd College for use as the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War. Of course, that meant that Moore needed to visit Shepherdstown to dedicate the house. She spoke at Shepherd’s 1996 commencement, hosted a signing of her autobiography, After All, in the Shindler house, and graced a reception at an estate outside of town. You can be sure that Jennifer, her mother, Leone, and I took every opportunity to meet and talk with Mary Tyler Moore. When it was my turn to have my book signed, I worked up my courage and said, “I know you probably hear this from women across the country, but you were my role model. You made me see that a life as a single, independent, career woman was possible.” She smiled and graciously said, “Yes, I do hear that often, but it means so much every time.” So much has been written about Mary Tyler Moore and her show, but I’ll just point you to a few resources. A thorough history of the show is available in Jennifer Keishin Armstrong’s book Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted: And All the Brilliant Minds Who Made The Mary Tyler Moore Show a Classic. In her reflections on Mary Tyler Moore, Jane Pauley pays tribute to Mary Richards as her role model. Two New York Times features examine Moore’s impact on 1970s fashion and The Mary Tyler Moore Show “look.” “Sex and That ‘70s Single Woman” looks at the ways The Mary Tyler Moore Show addressed social issues of the day. The Washington Post points to “Five Ways The Mary Tyler Moore Show Revolutionized Women on Television,” and the LA Times tells the story of the show’s theme song, “Love Is All Around.” Video clips from an interview with Moore are available at the Archive of American Television. Numerous articles from The New York Times – published throughout her career as well as after her death – are available in a special collection. And to make sure you win your next Mary Tyler Moore trivia contest, check out Mental Floss’s “15 Awfully Big Facts About The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” And if you really can’t get enough Mary Tyler Moore, consider buying “her” Minneapolis mansion for $1.695 million! In the end, there’s no substitute for seeing Mary Tyler Moore in action. Luckily, the entire run of The Dick Van Dyke Show is available on DVD – and so is the complete seven-season collection of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Both DVD sets are in my collection, and I highly recommend them. Mary Tyler Moore is classic and ageless. You’ll enjoy the shows just as much as you did in your youth. Visit thestoryweb.com/moore for links to all these resources and to watch the first episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which aired on September 19, 1970. No matter how many times I see it, this episode still makes me laugh out loud! “You’ve got spunk,” says Mr. Grant. “Well, yes,” Mary agrees sheepishly. After a pause, Mr. Grant says, “I hate spunk.” Gotta love it! As we say goodbye to this beloved icon, join other fans in your own hat-tossing tribute to Mary Tyler Moore!
