We have another guest this week. Hot off her state of the county speech, County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer is joining us. Our South Bay reporter did a deep dive into what happened after Chula Vista Mayor John McCann helped secure the release of a woman convicted of fraud several years ago. She’s being sentenced today on another charge. And we had a story this week out of Encinitas where a homeless service provider is being attacked online and blamed for the increasing visibility of homelessness in the beach town. California will become the first state in the nation to require all teachers and school staff to get vaccinated or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. Plus, a new city official is now in charge of finding solutions to the city's chronic homelessness problem. Also, the first ever Olympic “park skateboarding” event was dominated by skaters who either live in San Diego, were born here, trained here or all of the above. And, in honor of Indian Independence Day, Aug. 15, Cinema Junkie decided to dedicate this month's podcasts to celebrating Bollywood Cinema. We'll bring you an excerpt from the first part of the two part series. Finally, San Diego synth pop band Glass Spells just released a new album — written and recorded during the pandemic. The band will host an album release show at Soda Bar this Saturday
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Wheatus from the Soda Bar in San Diego! *This interview with conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic* It's hard to believe Wheatus are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album and still-ubiquitous single "Teenage Dirtbag.” Yes, that’s right - Dirtbag is no longer a teenager. In honor of this anniversary, Wheatus will release a new and expanded edition of their now classic debut album, in conjunction with a world tour. Says Brendan B Brown, “We found demos of ten more songs from throughout the band’s history, that had such an album-one vibe that they never made it on to our more recent records. So now we’re giving them a proper chance to be heard. The twenty-song version of the album will feature the originally-conceived track listing and sequence, plus the extra ten songs that have finally found a home on a record.” The band spent the beginning of 2019 doing a coast-to-coast, almost entirely sold-out tour of America opening for (and then collaborating with) Mike Doughty on his Ruby Vroom 25th Anniversary shows. The band's first proper live album, M (Live in America), came from these shows and was released April 10th, 2020. This collection exclusively features material from their sophomore album on, serving as a celebration of their longevity and as a compliment to the forthcoming re-release of album 1. In addition to working on the aforementioned re-release of album 1, Wheatus are also working on their seventh full-length album & recording monthly live-in-the-studio concerts for fans on the subscription service Patreon. This episode is a live recording of Dillinger Four playing some songs and was recorded on March 7th, 2020 at The Soda Bar in San Diego, California. This was one of the last shows in all of Punkdom before Covid 19 shut it all down, but what a way to go out! A total of 14 songs that are all about being a lonely kid growing up in the shadow of an overbearing father. Actually, I have no idea if that's what the songs are about, this is D4, not The Postal Service. Paddy talking shit between songs included for free. My personal favorite quote of his from this show? “Donald Trump told me not to take my pants off. But I DID take my fucking pants off!”. Here’s a track listing:1. Noble Stabbings2. Super Powers Enable Me To Blend In With Machinery3. A Jingle For The Product4. Folk Song5. Mosh For Jesus6. A Floater Left With Pleasure In The Executive Washroom7. Suckers Intl. Has Gone Public8. Let Them Eat Thomas Paine9. Maximum Piss And Vinegar10. DoubleWhiskeyCokeNoIce11. Gainsville12. = Putting The “F” Back In “Art”13. The Great American Going Out Of Business Sale14. Sally MacLannaneGreat show by some of the greatest people around, the Dillinger Four Experience should not be missed!
Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! At the time of this taping, indoor dining at restaurants in San Diego has been shut down for at least the next three weeks, and bars remain closed. We’ve been wondering what this means for the industry, and also how this will affect the live music scene and the venues that host them. So we brought in Tim Mays, who owns The Casbah on Kettner Boulevard—a landmark that’s been in town for over 30 years—along with Starlite restaurant, Krakatoa Cafe and Vinyl Junkies Record Shack. Tim is a serial entrepreneur: He’s also a partner in Soda Bar, and owned both Turf Supper Club in Golden Hill and Riviera Supper Club in La Mesa. He got his start in the industry by passing out flyers for concerts and booking shows in the ’80s before he opened The Casbah. Tim shares his insights on what it takes to adapt a restaurant to social distancing rules, when live music might start up again (nothing is projected until next spring), and what the industry could look like in the near future. We talk about how local musicians and creatives are affected by this, and how some are changing in response; Tim also shared his top favorite bands that have performed at The Casbah. (Listen to find out!) In Hot Plates, we talked about how Il Dandy changed its high-end Italian concept to a more casual one, Civico by The Park, that is serving pinsa—Troy explains what pinsa is and how it’s different from pizza. New things are happening at Liberty Public Market: the owners of Mastiff Sausage are opening a hot chicken and burger concept; Phillip Esteban (whom we just had on the show) is opening a brick-and-mortar spot for his Filipino rice bowls; and The Presley is opening at the end of this month, taking over the former Fireside by The Patio space. For Two People for Takeout, Tim’s picks are Buona Forchetta and Pizzeria Luigi. Troy’s pick is the döner fries at The Kebab Shop, and I picked the larb at The Original Sab-E-Lee. David’s pick is the fish and chips burrito at Beerfish, and he explains a fun to-go promotion the restaurant started that involves Smirnoff Ice. Thank you so much for listening and for staying with us. We want to hear from you. Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? A topic that should be explored? Need a recommendation for takeout? Do you have a question for Troy? Let us know. You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you’re shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com.

This week's episode of the SoundDiego Podcast welcomes Ilan Rubin. Episode 99! This week we check in with Tim Mays (The Casbah, owner), Cory Stier (Soda Bar, owner), and Shiloh (The Merrow, sound engineer) to get their insight on the Covid-19 shut down. The proceeds will help keep a steady revenue stream and hopefully keep their doors open through phase 4 in California. You could call Cory Stier one of the most plugged-in people in the San Diego music scene. While cutting his teeth originally in the band Pistolita, Stier eventually found himself behind the local label Thrill Me Records and behind the drum kit for bands including Cults, Mrs. Magician, Hideout and others. As a talent buyer, his home base for the last 10 years has been Soda Bar while he also branched out into presenting shows at the Irenic, Casbah, the Belly Up, the Che Cafe, House of Blues and other clubs. Fittingly, Stier ended up purchasing Soda Bar with Casbah owner Tim Mays, Andrew Montoya (from Beaters, the Sess, Teach Me, etc.) and Angie Ollman in 2018. Be sure to visit SodaBarMusic.com to purchase merch, with proceeds going directly to staff, and of course, head there for shows when life gets (somewhat) back to normal.Listen/subscribe to the SoundDiego Podcast on your favorite podcasting platform: Apple Podcasts | Google Play | Spotify | StitcherEpisode 10 Show Notes:Soda Bar celebrated its 10th anniversary just last year — and who else would Cory tap to ring in the momentous occasion than his own band, Cults! Relive the show with the band's SoundDiego TV performance here. Also, read the SoundDiego interview with Cory about the big birthday here, where he recaps what his journey over the last 10 years has been like. For our sharp-eared listeners, Cory mentions "Rosey" around 2:05 in the episode. He's referring to none other than Rosemary Bystrak, who handles marketing for the Casbah, is a regular SoundDiego contributor and runs the blog SD: Dialed In.Similarly, while talking about the Whistle Stop around 2:15 in the episode, Cory also throws out the name "Craig" — a reference to Craig Oliver, owner of one of San Diego's best independent labels, Volar Records. The first album Cory bought himself was Lagwagon's 1994 sophomore full-length "Trashed" — here's a little background on it.We joined hundreds of other rabid Frights fans for their huge, free Balboa Park show at Spreckels Organ Pavilion back in February (doesn't that seem like a lifetime ago?) — check out the SoundDiego TV recap here. Also, who could forget Drive Like Jehu's epic predecessor to the Frights' Balboa Park show? Switchfoot hardly needs an introduction in San Diego, but the Grammy-award winning hometown band has enjoyed several chart-busting hits, is beloved by millions of fans worldwide and always makes a point to give back to the community at large, especially here in town. Their annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf/music charity festival has become a local tradition, but, sadly, this year's edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic (read the SoundDiego article on it here). You can't keep a good band down, however, and while the fest isn't happening, Switchfoot has set up a COVID-19 relief fund here in its place that donates proceeds to Feeding San Diego. There are few more recognizable figures in San Diego craft-beer (and the local brewing scene in general) than Pizza Port's Jill Olesh. A lifelong bar/restaurant/brewery veteran, she is currently the senior sales and brand development manager for the local brewery chain, a former president of the San Diego Brewers Guild and spearheads the booking of the annual Rhythm & Brews Festival in Vista (unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's event has been postponed until 2021). Eric Howarth, co-owner of Vinyl Junkies Record Shack, has been a well-known figure in the San Diego music scene for years. The founder of M-Theory Records in Mission Hills (and, formerly, North Park) and the operator of Hi Speed Soul Records (which released vinyl by Nada Surf, Swervedriver, Three Mile Pilot and others), Howarth now spends his time running the Vinyl Junkies Pop-Up at the Casbah and, of course, his "shack" of the same name in South Park. Little Hurricane are one of San Diego's greatest musical exports — they've won multiple San Diego Music Awards over the past decade and have a devoted fan base that spans the world. Their latest album, "Love Luck," is fantastic (it's currently up for Best Blues Album and Album of the Year at this year's SDMAs) and ranks up there as one of, if not the, best record the indie-rock duo has released to-date. Visit LittleHurricaneMusic.com and stay in the know about their upcoming tour dates, music and news.Listen and subscribe to the SoundDiego Podcast on your favorite podcasting platform: Apple Podcasts | Google Play | Spotify | StitcherEpisode 3 Show Notes:After hearing about Little Hurricane's show at the county fair, are you wondering what the difference is between a sound technician and an audio engineer is? Well, sound technicians are responsible for hooking up and managing the volume levels of all the different sounds coming from the stage and making them listenable for an audience. An audio technician is usually found in a music studio working alongside a producer to get each individual element of a song to sound as good -- or as unique -- as the producer and artist desires.Want to see CC puttin' her culinary skills to a different kind of use? Here's an acoustic version of Little Hurricane's "Blood Boil," live from their kitchen!Go back in time and experience CC's very first concert: Here's a full recording of Soundgarden's Nov. 9, 1996 show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom!Have you heard Little Hurricane's acoustic rendition of Counting Crows' "A Long December" yet? Check it out here. And peep a famous "Friends" star in the original video here.Bill Withers' classic song, "Ain't No Sunshine," was the subject of CC's second A or B Side question — if our discussion about how many times Withers sang "I know, I know, I know" in it didn't sound immediately familiar, listen to it here now. We weren't lying: he says it 26 times! The last A or B Side question might've been a tad confusing for listeners who don't know Pink Floyd's classic song "Money." Hear it in full here and listen for the little interview spoken-word snippets toward the end.Be sure to join us for a new episode of the SoundDiego Podcast every Monday. Haven't you ever heard of that sacred pact between weirdos? Y'know where the weird kids to some extent rally against normal people and look out for one another? Oh right, because that doesn't exist and real weirdos have their dad nail your feet to the linoleum in the kitchen with a steak knife. This week's review is The Loved Ones, written and directed by Sean Byrne. The film stars a very capable cast, who us ignorant Americans know very little about. Also, as you cam see, this week is a three-man booth, which you can anticipate from now on. That's right, Producer C.H.A.D is stepping out from behind the curtain to his proper place in the spotlight... that sexy devil. The "Hidden Track" this week is Gravespell, with their song"IGNIS." It fits pretty perfectly with the film, so please stick around to check it out. They are playing on 7/4/19 at the Soda Bar in San Diego.
