We had an amazing first event with the Bands "SPOKEN", "RELENT", and "REBORN", all while Sonny met everyone, signed books, and took pics. 1LoveHTX had the honor of giving away 600 books to people through the Houston market over 3 days. We visited private events, bars, churches, and sober living homes. It was an amazing time. This interview was during the FIRST night in Houston. We gave the audience a chance to ask some questions while Sonny answered, Near the end of the interview, we also had a special guest, Mr Randall Reeder....an actor from the Hollywood Blockbuster, "DEADPOOL". In this episode, we welcome Sonny Sandoval to the show. He is the lead singer of the multi-platinum selling and thrice Grammy nominated nu-metal group P.O.D. P.O.D. has been making music for three decades and has sold over 12 million records worldwide. He is also the Co-Founder of the ministry group called The Whosoevers and the author of the new book “Son of Southtown: My Life Between Two Worlds”. In this interview, we discuss why the timing was right for him to release a book, what it was like growing up in Southtown, how the death of his mother helped lead him to Christ, how he got his start in music, the early days of P.O.D., Christians being critical of the band's style of music, why heavy music isn't automatically “satanic”, what it was like when the band experienced super stardom, why his band toured with bands that were not Christian, why he decided to take a year off from the band to start a ministry organization, his Mount Rushmore of P.O.D. albums, the one P.O.D. song that he would leave for humanity, and much more. Let's get into it… Episode notes and links HERE. Donate to support our mission of equipping men to push back darkness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Send us a textSonny Sandoval, the legendary frontman of P.O.D., joins Vulgar Display of Podcast to talk about his journey from the streets of Southtown to the heights of the music industry. In his new book, Son of Southtown, Sonny shares his raw and unfiltered story—overcoming adversity, finding true faith, and navigating the complex world of nu-metal as a band that was too Christian for the world and too secular for the church. From playing underground shows to dominating MTV's Total Request Live and performing in New York just weeks after 9/11, Sonny has lived on the edge between two worlds—always walking with passion and integrity. We dive deep into his struggles with identity, the power of Youth of a Nation, and why his message is more relevant today than ever.
In this interview, P.O.D.'s Sonny Sandoval celebrates his new memoir, 'Son of Southtown,' discusses his personal faith and what's ahead for his band.
This week, we're scratching The Itch to read a book! Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. is releasing his autobiography, Son of Southtown: My Life Between Two Worlds on February 25th. He joins the show to discuss his story of God's faithfulness, band drama and reconciliation, and the changes and challenges of the music industry. Plus, Aaron has his long-awaited chance to ask about the cover art of The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, we learn about the process behind P.O.D.'s newest album Veritas, and a child discovers a guaranteed way to make money on tour. Sonny Sandoval was born and raised on the streets of Southtown, Texas, two exits from the Mexico border. He was always a behind-the-scenes person with no ambition of being the frontman for the platinum selling band, P.O.D. The band, known for their heavy music, was too Christian for the world but too secular for the Church. Sonny lives on the edge of these two worlds, a line he has attempted to walk with integrity. In his new autobiography, Son of Southtown, Sonny reflects on over 30 years of being a Christian in a mainstream band, playing on MTV and touring the world. How does one truly follow God's calling in this chaotic world? Part of the equation, according to Sonny's story, is being totally and uniquely who God made you to be, without apology and without compromise--but with passion and integrity. At the top of the episode, the hosts discuss their musical preferences, whether worship is a regular part of each of his or her personal worship practices and whether there is such thing as an "anointed" song.Be a Patron of the Podcast! On this Episode:Sonny Sandoval / Instagram / P.O.D. / Book (releasing 2/25/25) Hosts: Joey Svendsen, Tomelex Copeland, Ciarrah Lindsay, Bri McLeodExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattHost/Producer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound EngineerEditor: Katelyn VandiverWe have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. Episode 999 of Another Prank Call Show.In this episode Richard defies middle age by engaging once more in comedic irrelevancy. In a world where Amazon offers health insurance, Walmart employees wear body cameras, and trash covers everything from Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench, Richard refuses to surrender to the notion that life is a prank. Instead he soldiers on with prank call premises that are perhaps slightly less absurd than reality has become, but somehow even stupider. Is this new episode worth the wait? Should Richard have let this show recede into the dustbin of history, like his hairline, health, and positive view of the world? Perhaps these questions will linger, unanswered, for all time. In this episode I have the amazing privilege of getting to sit down with Sonny Sandoval, the legendary frontman of P.O.D., to talk about his upcoming autobiography, Son of Southtown: My Life Between Two Worlds. This conversation was one of, if not the highlight of this podcasting thing so far. Sonny was one of a kind. The nicest guy, and clearly so passionately fixated on Christ. Hope you enjoy and are encouraged by our conversation. And I hope you go grab a copy of Sonny's new book on February 25th. It is absolutely worth the read. Sonny Sandoval is the lead singer and lyricist of the multi-platinum band P.O.D. (Payable on Death) and cofounder of The Whosoevers. He is a product of Southtown, the southern part of San Diego that approaches the border with Mexico. He is the founder and president of the Youth of the Nation Foundation, which reaches out to children from underprivileged neighborhoods and gives them the opportunity to find their self-worth and value. Sonny is married to his high school sweetheart, Shannon, and they have three children. https://www.ryleyheppner.com https://www.instagram.com/ryleyheppner/ For all collaboration requests (speaking, advertising, etc.) go to: https://www.ryleyheppner.com/collaboration
What's up, dudes? I've got Anthony Caruso from ‘Tis the Podcast and Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas with me to talk the greatness that is “The Year Without a Santa Claus” from Rankin Bass! Released in ‘74, it aired all throughout the ‘80s!When Santa Claus wakes up with a mysterious magical illness that affects immortal beings, he decides to summon the elf doctor. This quack immediately tells Santa that kids don't care about him, causing him to skip Christmas. Mrs. Claus sends elves Jingle and Jangle to Southtown, USA to gauge the local children's belief in Santa. Unfortunately for them, a dog catcher nabs the reindeer Vixen who accompanied them. They approach the mayor to release Vixen, but he will only acquiesce if they can make it snow. Thus they take Mrs Claus with them to see the Miser Brothers who rule over the heat and cold.Meanwhile, Santa goes to rescue Vixen and discovers kids still believe in him. He returns to the North Pole while Mrs. C and the elves visit Heat Miser and Snow Miser. When they refuse to cooperate, the trio ask another Nature to intervene. The snow in Southtown prompts the mayor to declare a holiday for Santa, and the children of the world write to him and send him presents. Moved by their love and generosity, Santa makes his Christmas Eve ride.Reindeer with socks covering her ears? Yep. Children from the It's a Small World ride? For sure. Personifications of summer and winter? Only if they're petty sibling rivals! So put on your Santa suit, hop on your reindeer, and fly to negotiate with minor deities with this episode all about “The Year Without a Santa Claus!”‘Tis the PodcastFB: @tisthepodcastTwitter: @tisthepodIG: @tisthepodcast Lost Christmas PodcastFB: @LostChristmasPodcastTwitter: @LostChristmasP1IG: @lostchristmaspodcast Give us a buzz! What's up, dudes? I'm running up that hill with Mike and Rusty from Snow in Southtown to talk about Kate: Kate Bush Christmas Special and her song “December Will Be Magic Again!” Released in 1979, it proves that the singer, only 21 at the time, was already a tour de force. A year later she released the Christmas song as a single. The special is a mix of live performances and choreographed dance to prerecorded music. The live portion was recorded BBC Pebble Mills Studios in front of an audience. The music for the dance was done at EMI Studios in London. After a rotoscoped animated introduction, Kate launches into renditions off “Violin,” Gymnopédie No. 1 by Satie, and “Symphony in Blue.” “Them Heavy People” follows with Kate garbed in sequins. Immediately a trio sings Peter Gabriel's in, and he serenades the audience with “Here Comes the Flood.” Kate performs “Ran Tan Waltz” then premieres “December Will Be Magic Again” on solo piano. Next comes “The Wedding List” about a vengeful bride and the duet “Another Day” with Peter Gabriel about a failed marriage. Finally, Kate enthralls us with “Egypt,” “The Man with a Child in His Eyes,” and “Don't Push Your Foot on the Heart Brake.” Does she hop in a garbage can and come out dressed like Sandy from the end of “Grease?” Why, yes. Yes she does.Stevie Nicks-like flowing black outfit? Yep. Fake beard and “Fiddler on the Roof” getup? Uh huh. Kate doing interpretative dance superimposed over her playing piano? Definitely! So grab your violin and head to Egypt to this episode about Kate Bush!Snow in SouthtownFB: @snowinsouthtownTwitter: @snowinsouthtownIG: @snowinsouthtownPatreon: @snowinsouthtownCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! For just the second time in the show's history (and perhaps the last time), we are covering our namesake band, as we dive into the P.O.D. well once again to review their major-label debut, "The Fundamental Elements of Southtown". I'll say this: we like it a heck of a lot more than we did "Satellite". Doesn't stop us from finding lots to chew on here though, as Bryan remembers grappling with liking this album when it first came out with the fact the band was Christian, and we wonder how much that affected the general populace's enjoyment of them as well, as it's hard to like a Christian band in front of your friends. In 2023 without that context, there's quite a few great songs to be had, but it's also pretty front-loaded and limps to the finish line. We also take a look into Sonny's Christian missionary work, learn far too much about the "Miss Rocklahoma" Pageant, and we end the episode by discovering two of the most insane articles we've ever found doing this show, written by a devout Christian who spends roughly 30,000 words wondering just how Christian P.O.D. indeed are. If you want to become a more devout follower of this show, you can head on over to patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last month, Josh Gondelman joined us to discuss the soundtrack to the weird Canadian animated sci-fi movie "Heavy Metal 2000", and for the first time ever, we introduced the $7 tier, which gets you VIDEO of that very same episode. It was a great time. The $7 Tier also comes with a bunch of other cool perks, and at any tier, you get access to our entire back catalogue, which comprises over 100 episodes. Don't miss out!
Are you really 'GO' to use your full FAA waiver? Greg Young shares his experiences with this topic, and what he learned is an eye opening education for all rocketeers! About our guest...Greg shares his background in rocketry... My rocketry experience started in 1961, at the ripe old age of 10years, when I ordered, built and flew rockets from Estes Industries. Try as I may, I was not successful at getting local hobby shops to carry rocketry supplies at that time, as the owners felt they were dangerous fireworks. My flying continued until taking a hiatus during my college, and then post graduate years. When my oldest daughter expressed an interest in rockets (while in 3rd grade) my flying resumed. I joined NAR, and TRA at that time and formed a local rocketry club, the Southtown's Amateur Rocket Society (STARS). When my youngest daughter left middle school for high school, I wound up taking another hiatus, and the club disbanded. My flying hiatus ended when my grandchildren expressed interest in rocketry. I rejoined NAR and TRA, and decided to go through the official high power certification program (something not required back in the 1980's when I flew) and am currently a level 3 flier. I have been involved in 2 NY rocketry groups, one in Geneseo, the other in Penn Yan, and have served from 2016 through the end of 2022 as a member of board of directors, the VP, the waiver holder, the RSO and also served the Prefect of the former for part of that time. I have served on the planning committees for LDRS 34, NSL 2018, and NARAM 62, and during those launches was involved on the field running the range safety operations. Currently I have been involved with local youth (high school and college age primarily), and officially have mentored several school ARC teams which have gone to nationals, and most recently a high school team who was chosen to participate in the 2023 NASA student launch initiative and went on to the nationals in Huntsville. I am hoping to get time to be able to fly more, and mentor more student groups going forward. They are, after all, our future...

Since the LA Lloyd Rock 30 began July 4, 2000, P.O.D. was one of the first bands to help launch the show. Move forward to 2022 when P.O.D. vocalist Sonny Sandoval and guitarist Marcos Curiel are always happy to sit down and chat with LA Lloyd. But for their 6th appearance, this one was very unique as it was recorded in the middle of the sea on the Shiprocked cruise. Many things will be covered in the interview including the many milestones reached by P.O.D. including the 20th anniversary of their platinum album Satellite. Also, the band talks about revisiting with legendary producer Howard Benson. As Sonny and Marcos reveal, Howard takes them in the studio to show them all of the many plaques he's received from other gold and platinum artists. But the one he's most proud of in the middle of the bunch is his first gold record he received as producer of P.O.D.'s album The Fundamental Elements of Southtown.
AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
On the episode, Ami Kassar interviews Tim McDiarmid, Founder and Owner at Tim the Girl Catering, The Good Kind & Ivy Hall Events, on managing a restaurant through the pandemic. Tim grew up in Canada and always dreamt of being a chef. She loved watching her mother cook and aspired to one day work in a restaurant in New York City. As a young woman, Tim headed to the “Big Apple” in search of fulfilling her dreams. She lived and worked in New York for nearly 20 years in every restaurant position imaginable from front of house, back of house, bartender, and eventually as a chef. This was a great learning experience, allowing her to observe all aspects of running a restaurant. Tim was able to really hone in on her craft and gain lots of knowledge from other culinary leaders in the community. In 2004, Tim and her husband (at the time) had a son, Tappen. Unfortunately, the relationship was toxic and she needed to escape. So in 2011, Tim packed up her six year old son, and together they moved to San Antonio, TX. It was the hardest thing she's ever done. Living in a big city, with no family, as a single parent was difficult. She had to be scrappy and work hard. It was here that Tim began cooking from home and started her catering business, Tim The Girl Catering. This allowed Tim more time to focus on her son, continue her passion, and grow what is now a very successful group of businesses. In 2015, Tim had the opportunity to open her very own restaurant, called The Good Kind. The concept specializes in healthy grab-n-go breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items, plus large and small scale catering. The Good Kind builds on Tim the Girl Catering's vision to provide the San Antonio community with food that is clean, nourishing, sustainable, and delicious. The restaurant started as an incubator project in a popular downtown San Antonio shopping area called The Pearl. They had a Food Hall, which allowed Tim to grow and save for the chance of moving into her own space. Soon she was able to move into a beautiful garden property in the Southtown neighborhood of San Antonio. Here Tim was able to open a permanent restaurant for The Good Kind and run an event venue, called Ivy Hall Events. It's a beautiful garden space that can host weddings, birthdays, corporate events, and more. The three businesses work together beautifully allowing Tim to provide delicious food on the property, as well as for off-site events. Recorded 02/02/2022.
Rick Hill moved to San Antonio for college and has been here since. He has worked for a variety of local sports teams and events. He currently work as the VP of communications and marketing at the Valero Alamo Bowl. Additionally, he has a few cool hobbies and likes that we discuss. Rick is a big fan and advocate of our great city. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenido, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. Rick Hill: Who is the worst guest you've ever had? Justin: [chuckles] We'll talk about that in a second. I like how Rick just spoke over the intro, so in the intro, we'll have Rick in the background. Welcome to The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Rick Hill, no relation to me, unfortunately. He is the VP of Marketing and Communication with the Valero Alamo Bowl, and I realize you have to say Valera with the Alamo Bowl now. Rick has also spent time with the Spurs, the Missions and something called the SA Riders, which I am told is a football game. I thought it was maybe something that happens on the strip late at night, but no, a football team here in San Antonio. He has no championship rings, he likes to tell people on his internet profile. Since the Alamo Bowl is right around the corner and I'd bugged Rick for like a year, I figured it'd be a good time to bug him, and here he is. Rick, thanks for being here. Rick: My pleasure, Justin. Thank you. Justin: While we were starting, Rick said who's the worst guest I've had on here. Well, the worst guests are the ones that just no matter what you ask, they're going to answer whatever they want. Rick: Good. I have nothing prepared, so I will be the opposite. I just like to set a low benchmark so people are happy. Justin: Some people have and I feel like if I was calling out guests as the worst, I'd have a hard time finding other guests, so I better not do that. Let me just say, the least listened to episodes are some of my better friends, so I just better not tell them. You will have 10s of listeners at a minimum, I guarantee that. You could have many more than that. Rick: I'm used to people not listening to me. This is perfect. Justin: Well, it's funny. I had one guy on here who became an all-star of the fintech Twitter, the Fintwit I think they call them and his episode just went bonkers because of that. All that world wanted to hear whatever he had to say because he had the highest performing stock over the last 17 years, and even The Wall Street Journal was like, "It wasn't Tesla. It was this group out of San Antonio had the biggest stock in the last 20 years." It was interesting. All right, so let's start with a top 10. I'm going to ask you, it'll be 10-ish. Favorite Fiesta event? Rick: Coronation. Justin: We were just talking about that before and you seemed super excited about it, so I'm glad you brought that up. Something I'm probably going to talk more about, but you have some sort of weird BCycle thing. What's the number of miles you've put on a BCycle in a year, the most? Rick: The most? Probably 3,000 in a year. They have the E-bike now, but it's more pedal-assisted. I think the E-bike takes too much credit. I love jumping on Saturday, jumping out the Witte, driving through downtown, Southtown, and then heading south to Mission Reach. Justin: When you did it, it was not pedal-assist? Rick: Some of it is, and I think they're switching to all pedal-assist in the next couple of months, which should be great. I've been to Madison's [unintelligible 00:03:26] the best setup. Now, he is dedicated to improving San Antonio for all. Transcript: Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenidos, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour, discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique, and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right, welcome to The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Councilman Mario Bravo. Mario is District 1 Council Person for the city of San Antonio, recently elected. District 1 is basically everything you see on a map in the middle of San Antonio, from Southtown all the way up to about 410, a little bit on other sides, but between 281 and I-10. He ran on the issues of public safety, healthy community, and economic redevelopment. He unseated an entrenched incumbent, who, if he had won, would maybe have been the longest-serving council person in San Antonio history, is that right? Mario Bravo: I'm not sure, but yes. Justin: Something along those lines. It would have been a very long run. Mario: I think that's probably right because we had just recently gone from four years to eight years for term limits. Justin: Oh, okay. Yes, yes. Mario: He would have been at about eight and a half years. Justin: There are two four-year terms now for y'all, right? Mario: Four two-year terms now. Justin: Oh, yes, because four two-year terms would make a whole lot more sense. I remember thinking how strange it was the way we did it. Mario has been involved in activism in San Antonio for a long time. We'll talk to him about that. We asked him to come on to talk to us about his most recent election, challenges for the city, and now is a very challenging time, so this is very [unintelligible 00:01:42], I think, and a little bit about who he is. I got to know Mario, when he decided to run for this District 1 seat, I reached out to him and said, "I think it's time for a change. I'd like to get to know you." Mario is very passionate about our city and his district. Before this, we were talking that when you're passionate about something, it doesn't feel like work and he's really enjoying it. Mario, I sort of start all these with a little bit of getting to know some strange questions. What are your favorite places to eat and drink right now in town? Let's do District 1, District 1 where's your favorite place to have a bite and have a drink right now? Mario: Oh, there's quite a few, but Liberty Bar's one for sure. I'm a big fan of Curry Boys on North St. Mary's Strip. I like to get the much [unintelligible 00:02:31] tacos from Garcia's. Justin: I just heard Curry Boys BBQ, right? Mario: Right. It's barbecue, but it's like barbecue chicken and brisket, but with Curry, and it's amazing. Justin: No, it was fantastic. It was all very spicy though. Just heed the warning. I haven't been to Liberty Bar in a little while, but I used to be known to go there on occasion. Favorite hidden gems in District 1 of San Antonio, maybe places people didn't know or haven't been within your District. Mario: Hidden gems. Justin: You have a lot of stuff in your district, so this should be an easy one. Mario: Well, I'm just trying to think of what's hidden? I guess not everybody knows about Sanchos and how great their michelada and their Bloody Marys are. Justin: I was going to go with the Japanese Tea Garden, but we'll stick to the drinking thing. I'm okay with that. Sanchos is good and it's very fairly priced, which I also appreciate, and District 1 has some places that are not fairly priced. What was the
