Tim Kirby discusses what life is like in Russia and the war in Ukraine. The vicious assault by Kiev on the Donbas region is what has led to the current proxy war. Russia has done a good job of taking territory friendly to it. Tribalism is one of the most powerful factors influencing International Relations. Ukrainian nationalists are really fighting for liberal, globalist, postmodern, and post-nationalist goals. The West and Russia will forever be divided for geopolitical reasons. The principle reasons Russians are angry with Putin are related to the pension reforms and that he took so long to do something about the Donbas situation. We should have a multipolar world where at least America, Russia, and China kind of have some nuclear weapons pointed at each other. The unipolar world has been detrimental to America, especially spiritually and intellectually. Welcome to the Dissident Mama podcast, episode 19. Today my guest is Tim Kirby, independent journalist and creator of the This is Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel - a fascinating YouTube channel that is also cross-published at Russia Beyond. RTTT is where Kirby shows viewers “all about life in and travel around the biggest country on Earth.” But this American doesn't just give viewers an inside glimpse into his wild travel and living-abroad adventures, his vlog sometimes takes a deep dive on a more personal note, such as “The most Russian American - Why Tim Kirby left the United States” video. This was my first introduction to Kirby, and I was blown away by his candor. Moreover, it was as if this guy has been a fly on the wall in my home. So much of what he expressed is exactly how I feel and think about the sad state of America and how, in my humble opinion, Russia may be the only country left on the entire planet that is willing to resist globohomo (which is why my family and I are praying to pull off a move to Russia - that is, if the country ever opens itso borders to US citizens). Is Russia really the “last best hope” of mankind, or at least, the last refuge for traditionalists and conservatives Christians? We'll see what Kirby has to say about that, as well as find out what happened to his now-defunct geopolitical video segment on RT called Kirby's War of Words. Fortunately, Kirby still does geopolitical writing and is currently a contributor at the Strategic Culture Foundation. You can also follow Kirby at Facebook, Instagram, and VK for all you Russian speakers. Mentioned in our conversation are Russian political analyst Aleksandr Dugin, the indispensable book Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America by David Hacket Fischer, my 5-part “Puritans” series on understanding the historical, cultural, and religious difference between North and South (and diverse people groups therein), the travel and political vlogger ADV China, and Kirby's own This Old Russian House Renovation Guide.

US lawyer Eric Lewis stated during Assange's extradition hearing in London on Tuesday, “WikiLeaks and Mr. Assange pose a threat to the legitimacy of Trump's [election] campaign that he is desperate to squash by diverting attention and imprisoning Mr. Assange." What are we to make of this and why isn't this trial making US corporate media headlines? A Tuesday Washington Post headline read: "Pro-Trump youth group enlists teens in secretive campaign likened to a ‘troll farm,' prompting rebuke by Facebook and Twitter." How powerful is the spam-like behavior of bots and trolls across social media? Our show broadcasts from Washington, DC. Both hosts live in Maryland and are now seeing smoke from the California, Washington state and Oregon wildfires in the US capital's atmosphere. A Tuesday New York Times headline read: "Some of the Planet's Most Polluted Skies Are Now Over the West Coast." How serious of a problem is this, and what does it mean going forward?"Insisting during a town hall Tuesday night that COVID-19 will simply disappear on its own - echoing a baseless claim he also made in February, March, April, May, June, July and August - President Donald Trump touted a so-called 'herd immunity' approach to the pandemic," Common Dreams reported Wednesday. How do public health experts feel about this?"A new report from Brown University's Costs of War project has found that at least 37 million people have been displaced as a result of America's so-called 'war on terror' since 9/11, a conservative estimate of a number that may actually be somewhere between 48 million to 59 million," Caitlin Johnstone wrote for the Strategic Culture Foundation on September 11. What are we to make of this? "US troop cuts in Afghanistan have been ahead of schedule or on track for much of the year, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says that the US expects a full withdrawal from the country by April or May of 2021, as agreed to in the peace deal," Antiwar.com reported Monday. How can this be? The headline to Vijay Prashad and John Ross' Tuesday CounterPunch piece read: "The Difference Between the US and China's Response to COVID-19 is Staggering." According to Bob Woodward's taped interviews with the US president, the article said, "Trump admitted that the virus was virulent, but he decided to underplay its danger. 'I wanted to always play it down,' Trump said, 'because I don't want to create a panic.'" The piece continued, "Meanwhile, in China, ever since the virus was crushed in Wuhan, the government merely has had to contain small-scale localized outbreaks; in the last month, China has had zero domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases." For our last segment, Chris Hedges talks about his August Common Dreams article, entitled "America's Death March," in which he argues that the November election "will not stop the rise of hyper-nationalism, crisis cults and other signs of an empire's terminal decline."Guests:Neil Clark - Journalist and broadcasterNiko House - Political activist, independent journalist and podcasterTina Landis - Organizer in the environmental and social justice movementDr. Jehan "Gigi" El-Bayoumi - Professor of medicine and founding director of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences' Rodman InstituteGerald Horne - Professor of history at the University of Houston, author, historian and researcherKathy Kelly - American peace activist, founding member of Voices in the Wilderness and co-coordinator of Voices for Creative NonviolenceCaleb Maupin - Journalist and political analyst

As the US deals with the federal government's failure to renew pandemic relief, the social unrest appears to be taking a turn for the worse. Is this in any way related to the economic troubles? If so, are these one-time occurrences, and what can be done to calm the violence? The Washington Post recently ran a column by notorious pro-war neoconservative Max Boot praising the so-called "A Team" of foreign policy advisers surrounding Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Is this Biden team a rerun of the group of foreign policy advisers to former US President George W. Bush that the Post once described as a “dream team?” In what is clearly a very strange move, "[t]he US government has blacklisted several Russian scientific institutes, including the Russian Defense Ministry's 48th Central Research Institute, which has worked with other non-military medical centers to develop and test the world's first COVID-19 vaccine," Ben Norton wrote for the Strategic Culture Foundation on Saturday Meanwhile, Ted Galen Carpenter wrote in The American Conservative on Friday, "A dangerous vehicle collision between US and Russian soldiers in Northeastern Syria on Aug. 24 highlights the fragility of the relationship and the broader test of wills between the two major powers." What are we to make of this?"One of President Trump's top medical advisers is urging the White House to embrace a controversial 'herd immunity' strategy to combat the pandemic, which would entail allowing the coronavirus to spread through most of the population to quickly build resistance to the virus, while taking steps to protect those in nursing homes and other vulnerable populations, according to five people familiar with the discussions," the Washington Post reported Monday. Meanwhile, the New York Times reported Sunday: "It took more than three months for the United States to reach one million coronavirus cases after reporting its first confirmed infection, but less than a third of that time to notch the latest million-case leap. On Sunday, the United States hit yet another milestone, with six million reported cases, according to a New York Times database." Will "herd immunity" work? Our next guest, Andrei Nekrasov, is a film director, writer and producer who believed the story of Bill Browder and the Magnitsky Act and set out to create a documentary film about it. His project was welcomed by Browder and his associates, so much so that Browder agreed to work with Nekrasov in the making of the film. Strangely, half way through the project Nekrasov began to realize that Browder's story was inconsistent with the facts. He approached Browder, only to be admonished and attacked as a Russian propagandist. Nekrasov finished the documentary, and you can now find it at MagnitskyAct.com.Neoconservatives Jacob Nagel and Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies argued in a Monday op-ed in Newsweek, "The Trump administration must continue its maximum pressure campaign, while building safeguards to prevent a return to the fatally flawed nuclear agreements of the past." Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported on August 14, "US threats of legal action and sanctions forced Greek shipowners to surrender Iranian fuel to the US government in recent days, people familiar with the confiscation said." Additionally, RT reported Friday, "Tehran has poked fun at Mike Pompeo after the top US diplomat set a deadline to ‘snap back' sanctions on Iran under JCPOA, which he branded a 'foolish' deal, and despite the UN Security Council refusal to back the US initiative.""The COVID-19 pandemic exploded in New York City over four months ago and, so far, it has claimed 18,979 lives and infected 225,713 people," City Limits reported on August 25. "Still, on top of the fear of catching the disease, ending up in the hospital or even dying, what terrifies people ... is hunger. An estimated 2 million New Yorkers are struggling to afford their groceries." Meanwhile, The Hill reported Sunday, "The odds are rising that any deal on a fifth coronavirus relief package will be tied to legislation to prevent an October 2 government shutdown." What does this mean for the US going forward? "Zhang Yiming's plan to sell the US operations of his short-video app TikTok to avoid a shutdown was thrown into jeopardy after China asserted authority over a deal already under scrutiny by the Trump administration," Bloomberg reported Monday. "Beijing on Friday added uncertainty to already thorny negotiations over the sale of ByteDance Ltd.'s prized asset, claiming the ability to block a sale to foreign suitors Microsoft Corp. or Oracle Corp. with tighter restrictions on artificial intelligence exports." Meanwhile, Mark J. Valencia wrote in a Monday op-ed for the South China Morning Post, "With more tit-for-tat rhetoric and military posturing, China and the United States seem to be heading towards a showdown in the South China Sea." Can war be avoided?Guests:Gary Flowers - Public policy analystDanny Sjursen - Retired US Army major and author of "Patriotic Dissent: America in the Age of Endless War"Mark Sleboda - Moscow-based international relations and security analystMargaret Flowers - Pediatrician, health reform activist and co-director at Popular ResistanceAndrei Nekrasov - Film director, writer and producerAlexander Mercouris - Editor-in-chief of The Duran Daniel Lazare - Investigative journalist and author of "The Velvet Coup"Ted Rall - Political cartoonist and syndicated columnist

On Tuesday, during the second night of the Democratic National Convention, former US Vice President Joe Biden officially secured the Democratic Party's nomination for president. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) used her 60 seconds of speaking time during the event to support nominating Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and highlighted a number of issues that are truly relevant to the electorate. What does this say about the domestic political landscape? Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey in June said the state would fund a testing and technology program to aid public colleges and universities in the state reopen for in-person classes. "Now, as Alabama college students start those classes this week and next even as local virus rates remain high, that program — one of the nation's largest campus reopening efforts — is facing the ultimate test," the New York Times reported Wednesday. On August 12, "Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a former Navy prosecutor, chose an especially dramatic example when he compared the commitment of teachers and administrators [to reopen schools] to the resolve of Navy SEALs given the mission to go after Osama bin Laden," the Times also reported Wednesday. What are we to make of this?"The US-backed Venezuelan coup regime of Juan Guaidó is reestablishing ties with Israel and has opened a 'virtual embassy' in Jerusalem, run by a right-wing rabbi who lives in Miami and wants [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's help to fight 'terrorism,'" The Grayzone reported on August 14. Boy, does that sound convoluted and ominous. What can we expect next?"The victims and families of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks are urging Congress not to move forward with removing Sudan from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism in a deal they say would rob them of holding Khartoum accountable in a court of law," The Hill reported Wednesday. What's really behind Congress' efforts to establish this relationship with Khartoum?"Hamas said Israeli warplanes and drones struck several posts and facilities belonging to its armed wing," Al Jazeera reported Wednesday. "Israeli warplanes bombed the Gaza Strip for the eighth consecutive night after alleging that Palestinians had fired a rocket into southern Israel." Is Israel ignoring the concept of proportional response? In his Tuesday MintPress News article, Ramzy Baroud writes, "French President Emmanuel Macron is in no position to pontificate to Lebanon about the need for political and economic reforms. Just as thousands of Lebanese took to the streets of Beirut demanding 'revenge' against the ruling classes, the French people have relentlessly been doing the same; both peoples have been met with police violence and arrests." How will this play out?We will be discussing the role of both Democrats and Republicans in promoting and passing the Magnitsky Act in 2012. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Rep Jim. McGovern (D-MA) championed it. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) opposed it, but President Barack Obama signed it. So would the election make a difference? It's a good time to delve into the beginnings of the Maidan Coup, what with a similar event possibly going on in Belarus now. Eric Zuesse wrote for the Strategic Culture Foundation in 2018: "This will document that the ‘new Cold War' between the US and Russia did not start, as the Western myth has it, with Russia's involvement in the breakaway of Crimea and Donbass from Ukraine, after Ukraine — next door to Russia — had suddenly turned rabidly hostile toward Russia in February 2014. Ukraine's replacing its democratically elected neutralist Government in February 2014, by a rabidly anti-Russian Government, was a violent event, which produced many corpses. It's presented in The West as having been a ‘revolution' instead of a coup; but whatever it was, it certainly generated the ‘new Cold War' (the economic sanctions and NATO buildup on Russia's borders); and, to know whether it was a coup, or instead a revolution, is to know what actually started the ‘new Cold War', and why." What are we to make of this information?Guests:Ajamu Baraka - Former US vice-presidential candidate for the Green PartyDr. Yolandra Hancock - Board-certified pediatrician and obesity medicine specialistLeo Flores - Latin America coordinator for Code PinkNetfa Freeman - Host of Voices With Vision on WPFW 89.3 FM, Pan-Africanist and internationalist organizerDan Cohen - Filmmaker, director of "Killing Gaza" and writer for The GrayzoneEJ Magnier - Veteran Middle East war correspondentLucy Komissar - Investigative journalist focusing on corporate and financial corruption whose articles can be found at TheKomisarScoop.comJareth Copus - Author of "Ukraine: Forever a Pawn"

The hysteria in the West over Russia, and its leader, Vladimir Putin, is difficult to understand rationally.Russia -- and by extensions Russians -- have re-emerged in the US and the UK particularly, as a country and people that you are officially allowed to publicly hate, ridicule, and slander. It's like George Orwell's Hate Week in 1984, with Russia now taking the place of the last offically hated group: al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. But the world is changing drastically from the old Western-dominated Imperial Order with the emergence of Russia and China and perhaps still India and Brazil, and maybe Turkey. We need to understand this change from perspective outside of the West, which obviously wants to hold on to its dominance, and demonise those that are rising. For us in the rest of the world, we have a vested interest in understanding the new power dynamics and where we fit into it.I am pleased to have on my show today Tim Kirby, independent journalist, TV and radio host, Analyst for The Strategic Culture Foundation.Ideological Director, Eurasia Research Fellow, & Multimedia Project Director at the Center for Syncretic Studies. He is an American living in Moscow, with a valuable and insightful perspective on both countries.
