In the ravages of post-World War II Europe, some Jewish women survivors of the Holocaust found the beginnings of a new life when they met – and married – American (and Canadian and British) men serving with the Allied forces. These women were part of a much larger group of war brides, who came to the United States in such large numbers that they required a change in immigration law, but these Jewish war brides faced additional challenges, from language barriers to the memory of the trauma they'd experienced to finding a community in their new home. Dr. Robin Judd, Associate Professor of History at the Ohio State University and author of Between Two Worlds: Jewish War Brides after the Holocaust, joins this episode to help us explore the story of these women. We are not talking about weddings on this one. Today is different. It's our 200th episode and we had planned to release an episode with an awesome DJ, but we don't feel right about a ‘business as usual' approach right now. The world is still in the grips of the COVID pandemic and now America is on fire due to yet another murder of a black man by a police officer. Mr. George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who love him and are mourning his loss. Protests are taking place in all 50 states and half of those states still have some shelter in place mandates. We asked ourselves, how we could be supportive and IF we should release new episodes about weddings while all of this is going on. We decided this week to use our platform to share perspectives and truths from two black women we have connected with through the podcast to share their thoughts with us and with you and they were extremely gracious to lend us some of their time and energy. We honor and value these two women's words, insights, advice and opinions. We hope you find these discussions as enlightening and profound and necessary as we do. Juli is a Social, Cultural Anthropologist and teaches courses on Race, U.S. Based State Violence, sexuality and criminalization. Juli is planning her wedding and has had to reschedule due to Covid. And to sort of feel around and understand. Because I think when you are a subject of racism there is a habituation to it.” - Felicia “It's sad almost in a way that these moments, in the last week, have been - it required those moments for the black body to be completely blameless for people to finally be like, ‘Oh. This shit happens.' You have to be blameless in order to be seen. And that's, you know, that's incredibly difficult.” - Felicia Resources: Books: White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo Stamped from the Beginning - as well as How to be an Antiracist - both by Ibram X Kendi Social Media accounts to follow: @theConsciousKid @mireillecharper - 10 Steps to Non-Optical Allyship @rachel.cargle @privtoprog - links to petitions to sign as well @colorofchange - we have donated a third of our ad income for this month @blklivesmatter Articles: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/02/parenting/kids-books-racism-protest.html https://www.mic.com/articles/97900/10-simple-rules-for-being-a-non-racist-white-person We invite you to share your thoughts with us. In this special episode, we have the talented wedding planner, Tamara Jones. After a very poignant email from listener, Felicia Reid, we hope to begin to address some of the glaring roadblocks and differences that appear as a person of color planning a wedding. As well as address ways that all of us can help increase inclusivity in the wedding world. Big Takeaways As we continue the dialogue, we must ask the questions of inclusivity and experience up front. There needs to be more visibility. If the photographer doesn't know how to shoot skin color that isn't white, why would you hire him for a wedding for people of color? It's important to vet, and that makes the pool of vendors smaller for sure. Even if you are a cis straight white couple, it would be powerful and extremely important for the future of weddings to only hire those who are comfortable, and trained to work with all types of clients. For the last several years, the same dozen or so wedding planners have won “best wedding planner” awards, and of those dozen, there are never any people of color represented. The website will be the first look at any vendor, and knowing that who you connect with is what you expected to connect with is helpful! Since it's such a large search with tons of result, it might be nice to look for vendors that have employees that look like you, or have copy that speaks to you, and then go from there. Overall, some of the most important qualities to be looking for are consciousness, openness and authenticity. If you do see a black bride, usually it's an interracial couple. Or you rarely see her with her natural texture. Or an advertisement about her skin or her makeup. So there's a lot of things that we don't see as representation in the bridal world.” - Tamara “People really have to be open, and I think that's really the crux of what inclusivity is.” - Tamara “There's so much talent in the world that it doesn't all have to look like you, but it has to represent you.” - Tamara “It's important to be uncomfortable!” - Michelle Get In Touch EMAIL: thebigweddingplanningpodcast@gmail.com FACEBOOK: @TBWPpodcast INSTAGRAM: @thebigweddingplanningpodcast // BE SURE TO USE THE HASHTAG: #planthatwedding TWITTER: @TBWPpodcast PHONE: (415) 723-1625 Leave us a message and you might hear your voice on the show! In honor of Black History Month, we recognize the difficult past and celebrate the undeniable impact of African American farmers on past, present, and future foodways. It’s impossible to distill the entire meaning of Black History in America down to 20 minutes, so we chose to focus on the profound ways that farming can connect history and culture to environment and food. We begin with two HRN Hall of Fame Honorees, Carla Hall and Leah Penniman, who share stories of struggling to balance the complex history of Soul Food and Farming While Black, while simultaneously using their platforms to improve access to fair, healthy food – especially for African American communities in the US. We also turn our spotlight on the Southeastern African American Organic Network and Harlem Grown, two organizations keeping the culture of Black farming alive. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Meat + Three is powered by Simplecast.

Chefs Collaborative was founded in 1993 as a non-profit network focused on inspiring, educating and celebrating chefs and food professionals dedicated to working towards a better, more sustainable food system. For their 8th Annual Chefs Collaborative Summit, Growing Community – Owning the Future, food professionals from across the country gathered in Atlanta, GA on Saturday, September 9th – 11th for workshops, networking and engaging discussions on issues such as ethical seafood practices, food waste, meat matters and solutions for the future of sustainable food. Part two of Sunday's programming delved into concepts such as adaptive grazing techniques, a reimagining of the archaic curriculum of “home economics," and a deeper understanding of equality in politics of farming. This incredibly diverse group of individuals shared their knowledge and passion for making a difference through our local communities. Discussions also included a deeply intersectional examination of the restaurant business through the avenues of equity and race relations, and how both chefs and restaurateurs must take a stand to protect our nation’s immigrants through the socio-cultural establishment of “restaurant sanctuaries." Newcastle beat Connacht on Sunday 29-5 with a bonus point to reignite their European campaign and garner some revenge for last week's defeat. A young much changed Connacht certainly didn't let the cause down with a stirring first half display before succumbing to the hosts after half time. On duty in Kingston Park were Rob Murphy and Alan Deegan with Linley MacKenzie joining the crew for the post game chat. There's a special guest too as 88 time England internaitonal Tamara Jones joins the podcast to review the game and we also hear from Pat Lam, Craig Ronaldson and Dean Richards. .
Tamara started her academic career as a science geek, earned a degree in art, and, when she's not making quilts or herding cats, writes tense thrillers as Tamara Jones and the award-winning Dubric Byerly Mysteries series (Bantam Spectra), as Tamara Siler Jones. Despite the violent nature of her work, Tam's easygoing and friendly. Not sick or twisted at all. Honest. Tamara is represented by Laura Bradford at Bradford Literary Agency. The dead are coming back. Ten naked people walk from a cemetery into artist Sean Casey's backyard: ten Spore People who used to be dead. One, Mindy, stays with Sean while trying to reclaim her life, but her ex would rather she return to her grave. Sean struggles to protect Mindy and other Spores while battling his recurring—and worsening—nightmares. Meanwhile, the media feeds a panicked frenzy that leads both the hopeful and hateful to Sean's front door. As the Spore fungus spreads, so does the fear. When mutilated children match Sean's nightmares, he realizes his own worst terror may be closer than he thinks. TIP OF THE WEEK: Use Animoto to create cool book trailers.
