Engineers at the University of Glasgow have designed, developed and fired Ouroborous-3 (ear-uh-bore-us), the first unsupported "autophage" (aa-taa-fuh-j) rocket engine that eats parts of its own body for fuel. The concept seems futuristic, but the idea is actually nearly 100 years old. The hope is the rocket engine can fly far beyond the Earth's atmosphere and make the United Kingdom a larger player in the space industry. We're back in the cockpit with another installment of Light the Fuselage, this time with storyboard artist Mark Bristol. He talks about his love of the original movie, getting pulled off “Mission: Impossible 7” to work on “Top Gun: Maverick,” the crucial moment he helped bring to life, and seeing a work-in-progress version of the movie at Tom Cruise's house. And yes, we try to get some info out of him about the new “M:I.”
Our tenth episode - we made it! This week we discuss Freddies recent experience reducing rear wing sizes and Liam attempts to talk Science about the findings. We also discuss the art of reducing a fuselage size and the benefits it can bring As its our tenth episode we dissect the journey we've had so far producing a podcast and discuss our highlights and lowlights, strengths and weaknesses so far. It's been fantastic fun discussing these topics and recording ourselves doing so, and we hope to continue to do so for a long time - we would love to hear from you with any ideas you may have and any feedback. As always - if you like these episodes, give us a follow or subscribe and rate us 5 stars where you can - it means a lot to see people enjoying them, and motivates us to want to do more. finds us on instagram @genericfoilingpod ping us an email on thegenericfoilingpod@gmail.com
Researchers are breaking aircraft structures to understand how new materials will hold up in flight.
While this is technically another episode of Light the Fuselage, we do veer into Light the Fuse material as we talk to “Top Gun: Maverick” score producer/composer Lorne Balfe, who is also composing the score for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” We talk a lot about the music for the “M:I-7” trailer, whether or not the music from “Fallout” carries over and what the chorus is singing in the trailer music.
We're still firmly in Light the Fuselage territory with “Top Gun: Maverick” score producer/composer Lorne Balfe. Lorne breaks down the contributions of every composer on the movie (which also includes Lady Gaga, Harold Faltermeyer and Hans Zimmer), the challenges of composing during the pandemic and how initially the score was more ‘80s-indebted.
This week we continue our exploration of the Danger Zone with Kevin LaRosa, Jr., the aerial coordinator for “Top Gun: Maverick.” LaRosa, Jr. tells us about his CineJet project and how he captured the flying stunts in the movie, when Tom Cruise leaps into action and the movie's seamless mixture of CGI and practical effects. We also get him to talk about his favorite “Mission: Impossible” movie!
It's time for the conclusion of our Light the Fuselage chat with “Top Gun: Maverick” editor Eddie Hamilton. We talk about the first training montage (including how an unreleased Rolling Stones song from the 1960s nearly scored it!), what Edgar Wright contributed to the movie and Tom Cruise's very best note. You don't want to miss this!
We're back for part two of this special Light the Fuselage epic with “Top Gun: Maverick” editor Eddie Hamilton. This week, he talks about approximating the look of Tony Scott's original “Top Gun” (and how they had to stay away from the HD remaster), we go in-depth on the introductory bar scene in “Maverick” and discuss what went into the big scene with Val Kilmer. Plus learn what Chris Lebenzon and Stephen Mirrione contributed to the final edit.
This week on Light the Fuselage we are joined by “Top Gun: Maverick” editor Eddie Hamilton, who we had on the main show many years ago (he also edited “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”). This week we talk about how editing “Top Gun: Maverick” was like climbing a mountain, we get into the Screen X presentation and just how laborious the action production was. Also learn how long he'll have been on “Mission: Impossible 7” and “8.”
We're back in the Danger Zone this week, chatting with Greg Tarzan Davis, callsign “Coyote.” Tarzan tells us about what the audition process was like, bonding with Tom Cruise and starring in another little movie called “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part 1” (he originally just wanted to follow McQ and Cruise around while they filmed). We also get his “Mission: Impossible” rankings and his thoughts on Tom's hair! We're pulling some G's this week!
We kick off our Light the Fuselage miniseries dedicated to all things “Top Gun: Maverick” with the man himself, director Joseph Kosinski! This week we talk about what the director brought to the long-simmering sequel (he pitched Tom Cruise on the set of “Fallout!”), working with Val Kilmer, the emotional core of the movie and, of course, Tom Cruise's hair!
We just got back from CinemaCon, where we saw the BRAND NEW trailer for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part 1” and the entirety of “Top Gun: Maverick” (making this the first impromptu episode of Light the Fuselage). Get ready for our non-spoiler thoughts on “Top Gun: Maverick” and our frazzled analysis of the “M:I-7” trailer (we have a title!). Put on your aviators, crank up the Kenny Loggins, and let's fly!

Email us! Transcript: EP39 - Blade Entering the EVTOL Market; Boeing 787 Fuselage Issues and NASA X-59 Milestones All right, welcome back to the struck podcast. I'm your co-host Dan Blewett on today's show. We've got a good docket of topics. Number one, we're going to talk about the eco pulse hybrid designs. Uh, interesting new aircraft. And we'll talk about some of that. Uh, NASA supersonic X-59 has a wing, a wing milestone. So some, uh, good work from NASA. And we'll chat a little about that. And then obviously Virgin galactic, um, still big and has his hands in lots of different industries, but we're going to chat a little bit about their space tourism play in their headache. Concerning, but, um, sit still safe, sort of a board as part of the recent, one of the recent test flights in our engineering segment, we're going to talk about the Boeing 787, continuing to have fuselage issues. Some new slight defects have been detected. And we're going to chat a little bit about the way carbon fiber and other materials are machine and manufactured and how, just how difficult it is to get some of these really high tolerance parts built. Right. And then lastly, we're going to chat about blade, which is a helicopter, a rental service and their potential entrance into the EVTOL market. So, Allen, how are things going? We're closing on the holidays. Allen Hall: Yeah, it's going to snow first big grill, snow storm, or the season is happening now, which means all our aerospace engineering companies in the Northeast are preparing for the worst, but that's okay. You know, it's part of this seasonal shift and we're getting close to the holidays, Christmas and new year and Hanukkah and everything's starting. So that's exciting. Dan: Yeah. It's um, well it's been currently snowing and. It's kind of half raining most of the day today. So it's definitely feeling Christmas-y that's for sure. So jumping into it today, what is, uh, striking to you about this eco pulse distributed propulsion hybrid aircraft it's coming out of France? Um, this is news from to lose. Um, but tell us a little bit about what this propulsion system is and what do you think the long-term ramifications are? Allen Hall: Well, it's first off, it's being funded by the French government. And it is essentially a consortium of French companies like, uh, saffron that makes electric motors and it is, it'd be very similar to what happened to the United States when there's government funding for a project where you're trying to. Boost the industry and get to the next steps. Uh, so the airplane itself, I don't know if the airplane's all that important. Maybe it is in a longer scheme of things, as much as developing the system components and the products that they can offer worldwide in which. They are totally going to do so think of it as a, as a government funded jobs program a little bit, but also a technology development program that gives those companies resources. So the, the company names, it was dark, soft run and Airbus, um, tied in with w what was it? Core act, a civil aviation resource council in France to tie them all together and see where they can come up with an aircraft. It will be a demonstrator more than likely just to. Get something out there, but I know there's, if you, if I'm working a lot of different aircraft programs concurrently right now, and you hear those names pop up more frequently in the last six months, uh, for electric propulsion systems. So, you know, that, that, that funding, that the government France is actually going somewhere there actually,
