Growing up as kids, after school activities or weekends are spent developing your interests. Some lean into sports, others further their studies, or some are encouraged by their family to follow their creativity. Alex McCabe, Co-Founder of Global Bedding and Homewares Brand Kip & Co. often spent weekends creating arts and crafts to sell at the local market, and throughout school and uni she relished music and singing, but Alex is also fortunate to be academically inclined. For the most part, if you have brains, school helps you develop and hone in on academia, and then that translates very well into the post school/uni world of a career corporate. Fast forward to that time, where Alex is an established lawyer, and steps back to reflect on how she got there, the missing piece of her inner creative and in-turn what she wanted to change. Whilst it took steps, risks and chances, she moved slowly towards a career that fulfilled her more fully. Aligned with her two best friends who are sisters, they came together as a trio, inspired to create a small business that wove together the fabrics of what they had learnt in their individual journeys, and then Kip & Co was born. What was a side hustle, starting with a limited range, to now a Global Bedding and Homewares brand vibrant with colour and creativity, they share the juggle together, affording each other flexibility to be women and mother's and inspiring each other by their individual capabilities and contribution. How to add colour to your home like a Scandi via @hmhome watch the original video tour here 1. Handpainted stripes These candles are a great addition to any neutral space to add a pop of colour. What's also great is once you've burnt through them, you can use these guys as glassware, makeup brush holder or a small vase. 2. A statement vase/sculpture. Add instant character and something to offset the clean lines. This curved hand-drawn line design and curved form instantly looks good with or without flowers. 3. Punchy Blues. particularly a blue stripe is known as ‘the Scandi accent' to any home or wardrobe. I like our discussion has a bulb blue but then accented with a more neutral soft linen beige, so it doesn't feel so stark. It's softer which works well and makes it feel more elevated. 4. Add colour to small everyday functional pieces. Like candles, table clothes and dishes. 5. Scandi style is about keeping cosy and soft regardless of season. These soft fluffy faux mohair blankets are perfect to achieve a soft colour, cosy nook. 6. Add a touch of Scandi cottage accents with frills and small florals if that's your style. Or keep it urban with the bold stripes. That's it! Follow for more tips to achieve the home you want no matter if you're renting or owning.

Welcome back to The Grace Tales podcast. I'm your host, author and editor Georgie Abay. If you've been following over the last few weeks, you'll know I'm running a mini-series with founders of SMES. Because whether you've launched your own business, or have a dream bubbling away in the back of your mind, I know how much hearing other people's experience has helped me personally. Because launching a business – especially if you're doing it solo – can feel lonely at times. But you're not alone – more and more women are launching their own businesses. Thye're looking for more flexibility, a better work-life balance, financial independence and also for meaningful work. I know after I had children, I wanted to make sure that when I was at work, it felt meaningful. If I was going to be away from my kids, I had to love what I was doing. And on the topic of passion, today's founder is full of it. Today's episode is a special one – you're going to meet my friend Elise Pioch, who is the exceptionally clever French founder of homewares brand Maison Balzac. If you don't know Maison Balzac yet, it's a very beautiful brand which started with candles, later expanding into beautiful homewares such as colourful glasses, vases and candle holders. The thing I love about Elise's imagination is she dreams up unique objects which you didn't know you needed until she created it. But what I love most about Maison Balzac, is that Elise's authentic and kind nature can be felt. She's always followed her gut instinct, is not afraid to take risks and leads with kindness and compassion. It was a decade ago I turned up at her office and photographed her for The Grace Tales. She just launched the business, and she'd just had a baby. Her daughter LouLou was only 6 weeks old at the time and it's still one of my favourite stories. In this episode, Elise shares how the business has grown organically – she now has two retail stores - and what has kept her going over the last decade. Let's meet Elise! Today's guest is the lovely Skye Hamilton, co-founder and creative director of Bobby Seaford, which is the home of Australia's saltiest homewares, and Skipjack Maps, the purveyors of hydrographic maps carefully crafted to inspire coastal escapades. In today's episode I share breakfast with Alice Collyer, otherwise known as Alice in Scandiland, which is the name of Alice's award-winning homewares and interiors brand that encompasses her blog and social media accounts, along with shops – both online and in the market town of Lostwithiel in South East Cornwall. It's a fascinating story, not least because Alice has no formal training in the skills that she has so cleverly honed including interior design, photography, writing and managing a business. Alice in Scandiland is founded on principles of sustainability: sharing tips and inspiration for recycling and repurposing what you already have or can source affordably (which includes Alice's ongoing renovation of her modest family home in Cornwall), and when buying homewares, seeking out long-lasting products made with natural materials that have a story to tell and connect you with their maker. Despite this, one of the reasons I was keen to hear Alice's story is because she doesn't use the term ‘sustainable' in relation to her work (hence the brackets around the term in the title) and there are interesting messages that come out of our conversation about how included and comfortable people feel locating themselves within the ‘sustainability' space. Along with Alice's work, we discuss the positives and perils of social media, parenting feral children, and much more. For breakfast with Alice I cooked Pumpkin Porridge; this recipe is like autumn in a bowl – it's warming, comforting, uses seasonal ingredients and is both lightly spiced and sweetened as well as being a great option for using up excess pumpkin flesh and seeds that might otherwise go to waste. You can find the recipe, along with behind-the-scenes photos from our breakfast, more information about Alice's work and the sustainability issues we discuss along with suggested actions that each of us can take to address the issue, via the Episode 8 web page. In this podcast, Tara shares how she left her job as a graphic designer working in the surf industry on the South coast of New South Wales, Australia. Tara loved what she did and her work took her around the world to capture images to promote their brand. It was during this period she met her husband who also worked at the surf brand as a graphic designer. Whilst they enjoyed what they did, the company made changes to the way they operated, there was a lot of office politics and suddenly the joy of her work was missing. The restrictions meant that she couldn't be creative anymore and this was a turning point for Tara, and that's when she began exploring opportunities where they could do something that would allow them to be creative and grow. Today, Tara and her husband Danny run their own Furniture & Homewares business that really took off from day one and has gone from strength to strength. Tara discusses the challenges they faced in launching their business, however she also stresses on the importance of understanding the books from day one, having a strong ‘Why' behind running their business, having a mentor in the industry that guided them and really evaluating whether such a business could support their lifestyle, particularly if they wanted to start a family. Tara dedicates some of her time to mentor other women who are looking to start their own business and has her own online course called ‘Trade Wins' that shares all the tips and tricks on how to get their own store up and running based on her personal experience. Visit: www.fewandfar.com.au to check out Tara's business and we encourage you to reach out if you'd like to connect with her.

Welcome back lovely yayborhood and thank you for always bearing with me when I take a little break leaving a longer than usually gap between episodes. We had a glorious few days in the countryside over Easter with family switching off completely and I can't say how good it was for the soul. I think one of the most clarifying things for me over the past year has been to re-evaluate urgency and realise how many false deadlines I imposed on myself - I think I did 70 weeks in a row when we first started the show! I hope you enjoyed the re-release of legend Wim Hof's episode from last year to give you something in your ears, what an absolute hoot he is! I'm so glad I waited that extra week though as I got to record this week's episode in person which feels a bit like a luxury these days having done so many on Zoom. After voraciously consuming Lucy Glade-Wright's beautiful content last year to help get us through COVID particularly following her home reno very closely as we started our own, it was a thrill to actually see the results in person and record this in her lounge room. For any fellow homewares and home design lovers out there like myself, Lucy's amazing business Hunting for George will need no introduction having made waves in the industry since 2010 but in case you haven't already discovered its wonders, it's my absolute go-to source for home, design and lifestyle with a growing number of facets including house tours, travel guides and even a renovation TV show. This is only the second time however that Lucy has jumped on a podcast to share the full story of how it has evolved through several earlier chapters from a retail store (which it was when we first met a random local government business dinner) to a product design business and now to a bustling platform for storytelling and it was an absolute delight. She's another fabulous example of the many unexpected but amazing ways your why will evolve through many different hows if you just trust the process and give things a go. She's such a good egg and we had some fabulous chuckles on her lounge room floor. I hope you enjoy! Welcome back lovely yayborhood and thank you for always bearing with me when I take a little break leaving a longer than usually gap between episodes. We had a glorious few days in the countryside over Easter with family switching off completely and I can’t say how good it was for the soul. This episode carries a content warning... best not to listen if hearing about the pain of losing a job is triggering for you.Jason's job has been 'dis-established' and we get real with the state of universities and what it's like to lose a job you love. In this epic, no holds barred discussion Inger recounts her perception-shifting experience of being unfairly treated as a young academic and Jason reflects on how to approach work when you have had the veil ripped from your eyes. Craft Editions began life in 2016 to celebrate and promote incredibly talented makers. Having traveled extensively throughout Ireland and South Africa, meeting master craftspeople - todays guest has collated an incredible group of hand made products which are available from his website. The items are like beautiful pieces of art and range from table linens and napkins to basket-wares, hand thrown pottery, throws and cushions, and home accessories. By creating the website todays guest has built a mutually beneficial relationship with the makers he works with, paying a fair price that reflects the skill and time required to make the items by hand. He travels far and wide from the Atlantic coast of Ireland, to the Limpopo Province in the far north east of South Africa to source just the right items believing that it's important to meet the craftspeople he works with for Craft Editions. The result is seriously covetable. I'm thrilled to introduce to you todays guest Brian Waring Founder of Craft Editions. Discovering what Weaver Green are all about has made me fall even deeper in love with their products. Forget that fact that the diamond teal blanket I snuggle under every night in front of the TV is soooo snuggly and warm, or that their latest designs are bang on trend or even that they have some VERY exciting new carpets in the pipeline. No, it's the fact that they are so dedicated to producing products using 100% recycled plastic bottles and ensuring their processes are as eco as possible. Tasha and Barny Green are massively inspiring in their dedication to their brand and their impact on the environment. You'll want to hear their story and get right behind them too!

You know we love to add a little bit of humour to the Interiors world so grab a cuppa and enjoy our take on beautifully imperfect interiors.
We are Design Banter. Today we are taking a look at both sides of the design coin - timeless vs trend. We've realised that we both strongly believe in buying the best you can at the time - whatever that might look like. Conversely; buying for either is strongly influenced by budget, personal beliefs, education, accessibility and social persuasion; and so we've concluded that individual style, is really the best yardstick when making those important decisions.

The homewares market performed well in Eastern Europe in 2012, with stove top cookware taking the top spot in category sales. In homewares retailing, IKEA showed strong growth as a result of diversified product lines at affordable prices. Counterfeit items, created to look like popular brands, pose a threat; however, homewares will continue modest growth and reach pre-crisis levels by 2016-2017.
Due to the effects of the recession and the Eurozone crisis, more consumers are spending time at home rather than going out. Furniture and home furnishings are reaping the benefits of this trend, with indoor furniture sales perfuming particularly well. The Middle East and African home and garden market is taking advantage of the region's booming real estate market and high GDP growth, driving sales of luxury furniture and homewares.
