Presentatie: Robert Denneman
We bevinden ons momenteel midden in 'The Sunshine Double'.
From time to time, The Coaching Podcast understands that we all lead busy lives, and sometimes you might have less than 10 minutes in your daily schedule to listen to The Coaching Podcast for inspiration. Therefore, our guest coaches this week are Coach Mick (Chris Michalowski) and Jorge Capestany - performance coaches who walk their talk. With years of coaching experience, these bite-sized interviews, from years ago, still hold true today when we reflect on their responses as to what makes a great coach: Coach Mick (1 min, 50 seconds) - believes that a great coach has passion, compassion and empathy. Coach Capestany (4 mins, 58 seconds) - believes that a great coach can see possibilities, is a lifelong learner and can customize their content to meet the needs of the learner. Emma is very grateful to Jorge and his wife, Coach Marty, for their hospitality of love over the years and for introducing her to Coach Mick during a Polar Vortex in Michigan when they were both speaking at a high school conference. You can learn more about each coach below: Coach Mick, Chris Michalowski, USPTA Elite Professional & USTA High Performance Coach From Coach Mick: My ultimate goal is to get to know you better, but first I will fill you in on who I am, just to break the ice. My name is Chris Michalowski. I am a USPTA Tennis Professional and Director of Tennis at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa (click here to see) in one of the most pristine areas of Northern Michigan. Next to my faith, wife and family, tennis is a passion of mine that I hold dear to since I started playing, seriously anyway, at the age of 13. Tennis really broke me out of my shell and gave me confidence in many different areas of my life. I became a ranked junior player and was one match away from winning a state championship in high school. Three years after I started playing, I started teaching at the Midland Community Tennis Center, in Midland Michigan. It is known as one of the top clubs in the nation and recently, Midland won the “Best Tennis Town” by the United States Tennis Association. I loved to teach and wanted to learn as much as I could about the game (it helped my playing too). I knew that teaching was in my future, but my coach at the time encouraged me to stay in Architecture, my other career consideration , because of the long hours and the toll tennis takes on the body. I was accepted into the University of Cincinnati's architecture program, which was rated very high at the time, but the long hours in the studio kept me from playing and teaching. While at Cincinnati, the Ferris State University coach called and informed me that he wanted me to play on the team and take part in their new Professional Tennis Management program, the first ever, endorsed by the United States Professional Tennis Association. I was all over it. I walked through the doors and from there, never looked back. I was a member of the varsity mens team and when I wasn't hitting, I was absorbing all I could to become the best possible teaching professional that I could be. I am still that way and it drives my wife crazy sometimes. But to be honest, I feel that you can never stop learning and becoming even better at what you love to do. I have remained at the resort for 25 years as the director and was a director in the summertime (for 4 years) at one of the most prestigious country clubs in the Midwest at the time. Two jobs was a lot to handle so I decided to stay here where I feel like I was called to be. Thankfully, I stayed or I would not have met my incredible wife and parent four great kids we have been blessed with. One thing that I will always stand by, just like playing a match, is that when you are up 5-2 in the set, remember how you got there and keep doing the things that got you there in the first place. Don't change your game style at a critical time, especially when you are so close to winning the set The same goes for my outlook on teaching and my career. I still average close to 40 hours a week on the tennis court, manage a staff of 12 teaching professionals/instructors and stay active building tennis in my community with sore knees and all. I love being out there and that is what got me to where I am today, so why change things at 5-2 in the set? Do I consider myself an expert? The industry has said yes, but it is not that simple because tennis has changed over time and keeps advancing in exciting ways. I feel that it is important for teaching professionals, like myself , to stay in tune with sport science, new trends and teaching techniques, technology and new ways of teaching the game so that I can stay on top of “my game.” If I taught the same way I did 20 years ago, things would be very different for me right now and I would not have the opportunities and successes that I have been blessed with. Even as a USPTA Midwest Tester, I still learn something each time we administer the teaching exam to new tennis professionals. So what does all this mean? It means that through the use of technology and my knowledge and relationships that I developed with experts from around the world, I hope to be able to have a relationship with you and help in any way that I can to take your game to the next level. In this interview, we chat with tennis media personality, Blair Henley. If you can think of it, post-match interviews, player introductions, trivia, writing, etc…, Blair does it.Blair has interviewed Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, and more. She's also been featured by Tennis Magazine, ESPN, WTA, and dozens of other outlets. This was a special episode, as I was joined by fellow Tennis Tribe writer Hanlon Walsh who wrote a Tennis Media Roundtable article on Blair in 2020. You'll gather some insights into what it takes to get into the tennis media business, what's it's like to interview top players, and what a day is like for Blair. We talk about the Dallas Open, Blair's tennis story, and, of course, how to make doubles more popular. In addition to many more ideas, Blair had several interesting thoughts on doubles:She believes that contrary to popular opinion, a lot of people really enjoy watching doubles tennis. It is a lot like women's sports in that it doesn't get the platform it needs to prove its worth (great analogy here). And, doubles players should focus on their personal brands more. You can see the show notes for this episode at: https://www.thetennistribe.com/blair-henley-interview/Get free doubles strategies and tips to help you improve your game and become a smarter player at TheTennisTribe.com

"It's those times where you're sort of sitting there figuring out what can we do to make the most of this tournament in terms of publicizing our sport? It's just finding the different avenues to tell people about our game." Though a lot of focus has been on the players and all of the obstacles they've had to endure this past month and year, reporters like this week's guest Blair Henley have had to adjust, too. Henley is a recognizable face on the tour as one of the top digital media creators and stadium hosts out there. After her own playing career wrapped up at Rice University, Henley got her start making instructional videos for Tennis Now and writing for outlets like TENNIS Magazine. Since 2015, she has been a stadium host at some of the most popular calendar stops like the US Open, Cincinnati, Indian Wells and Delray Beach. Her job is to put the players, and the tournaments, on the map. She tells us all about her career and what it has been like to get quality time with big names like Roger Federer while building relationships with new faces like Coco Gauff and Sebastian Korda. To start of the year, she was one fate lucky few on site at Delray Beach. Then during the Austrian Open swing, she did online interviews called “Quarantine Chronicles” with Victoria Azarenka, Stefanos Tsitsitpas and Rajeev Ram for her YouTube channel. She explains how her work has been impacted by the pandemic, though it hasn't been all bad: Zoom has made reporting and content creation possible from anywhere in the world. "It's just that sort of natural approach that I've always had and, yeah, it's taken some fine-tuning. For the most part, it's just breaking down that fourth wall and letting the viewer feel like they're there with you." This week's TENNIS.com Podcast features reporter Nick McCarvel. He's got a lot of stories from the road to share with podcast co-hosts Nina Pantic and Irina Falconi. While studying journalism, McCarvel got his start in tennis by walking into the Tennis Magazine offices in Manhattan asking for a summer internship, and soon after, he began writing for the New York Times and USA Today. He made the leap to on-camera hosting at Indian Wells a few years ago, and has never looked back. Beyond tennis, he also covers figure skating, taking on the role of NBC Olympics digital reporter last year in Pyeongchang. McCarvel has carved out his place as a content creator, commentator and host, often taking over social media with his feature videos and interviews. He has become a smiling staple at seemingly every stop on tour and has worked with every big name in tennis—even chatting with Roger Federer and Serena Williams in the Twitter Blue Room after they won their Australian Open titles in 2017. On Episode 81 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with world-renowned sports performance expert Dr. Mark Kovacs about the 8-stage model of the tennis serve. I spoke with Dr. Kovacs about the role of the kinetic chain in the serve on The Tennis Technique Summit that I previously hosted, and it was voted the most favorite session of the event. Today, we discuss tennis photography from two distinct points of view. Our first guest is an independent photographer with twenty years of tennis photography experience to his credit, and later, we’re joined by representatives from Drawbridge Digital, the company that is present for all three weeks of the 2018 U.S. Open, creating and managing the still photography used on U.S. Open.org. and archived by the U.S.T.A. On the first half of the show, we welcome Chris Nicholson, a veteran of our podcast, and a multi-faceted photographer whose tennis work has been published in Wired, Men’s Health, Golf Digest, Tennis Magazine and the New York Times. We speak with Nicholson about the opportunities available for freelancers and even amateurs to shoot tennis matches and high-profile players. We discuss techniques, settings, and gear that will make your job easier and your photos better. After a break, we are joined by photographer Jen Pottheiser, and Reid Kelley of Drawbridge Digital, and we explore their massive undertaking to photograph the U.S. Open for the host organization. They work with all facets of the U.S.T.A. to provide photography to the editors at usopen.org, to their social media outlets, their marketing partners, as well as provide image storage solutions so that the thousands of photos taken at the Open can be made available for future needs. We speak with Pottheiser and Kelley about managing the workflow of over twenty photographers and editors on staff during the Open, about the on- and off-court images they look for, the systems they use to edit and organize the photos, and how to maintain your creativity while shooting nothing but tennis for three weeks. Join us for this timely and interesting look behind the scenes at the 2018 U.S. Open Grand Slam Tournament.
