A native of Austin, Matt Fajkus holds a Master in Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he completed his thesis work with Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo. Before going independent in 2010 and establishing MF Architecture, Fajkus achieved significant experience in architectural practice. While working for the world-renowned firm Foster + Partners in London for several years, he worked on the design of numerous high-profile, international large-scale projects. Starting at firms in 1998, he also worked on numerous small-scale award-winning projects while with Max Levy Architects in Dallas, Brinkley Sargent Architects, and Julie Snow Architects in Minneapolis. In 2012, Fajkus was awarded two AIA National Emerging Professional Awards.In addition to leading MF Architecture, Fajkus is a Tenured Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, where he teaches courses in design, technology, daylighting and integrated sustainability. He was awarded the 2022-2023 Faculty Award for Outstanding Studio Teaching in addition to being recognized with the University of Texas System Regents' 2013 Outstanding Teaching Award - the highest teaching honor awarded by the entire school system. Additionally in 2013, Fajkus was presented with the Faculty Scholarship Award for Innovative Practice, and the ACSA/AIAS National New Faculty Teaching Award. n this episode of Benevolent AI, safety researcher Dr. Roman Yampolskiy speaks with Host Dr. Ryan Merrill about societal concerns about controlling superintelligent AI systems. Based on his knowledge of what the top programmers are doing, Roman says at the most there is only a four year window - at most - to implement safety mechanisms before AI capabilities exceed human intelligence and are able to rewrite its own code. And that window could even be as short as one year from now. Either way, there's not much time left. Yampolskiy discusses the current approaches to instilling ethics in AI, as well as the bias shaped by the programmer who determines what is helpful or ethical. Yampolskiy advocates for a pause on development of more capable AI systems until safety is guaranteed. He compared the situation to the atomic bomb. Technology is advancing rapidly, so programmers urgently needs to establish social safeguards. More engagement is needed from the AI community to address these concerns now, to address the worst case scenario, then any positive outcome is a bonus. Diana Hernandez, PhD is a tenured Associate Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Hernandez conducts research at the intersection of energy, equity, housing and health. A sociologist by training, her work focuses on the social and environmental determinants of health and examines the impacts of policy and place-based interventions on the health and well-being of socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. An innovator in the field, Dr. Hernandez has operationalized and conducted foundational research on the concept of 'energy insecurity' which reflects the inability to adequately meet household energy needs. Her pathbreaking work on energy insecurity has explored the multiple dimensions of this phenomenon identifying sociodemographic disparities, adverse consequences and promising interventions toward energy justice.
Imagine folding clothes in your New York apartment anxiously awaiting the vote regarding your promotion and tenure at Stanford University. Dr. Steven O. Roberts was on sabbatical this past year and recalls seeing a missed call from the Chair of the department of psychology. In this podcast, Dr. Roberts shares his academic and professional journey leading up to the point where he recently received the news that he was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. When recalling how he found the field of psychology, Dr. Roberts states “the field of psychology just resonated with me” and “I've always loved just human behavior and, you know, why people do the things they do? Why do I do the things that I do?” During our discussion, Dr. Roberts shares his experiences at Borough of Manhattan Community College and how he received a scholarship to attend New York University where he received his bachelor's degree in applied psychology. Interestingly, he wasn't planning on applying for the scholarship, however, a good mentor of his kept encouraging him to apply. Throughout this podcast interview, Dr. Roberts reveals that if it wasn't for all of his friends and mentors, he wouldn't be where he is now. During his senior year at NYU, he participated in a research program at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill called Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) which gave him an opportunity to work with Enrique Neblett who received his PhD from Michigan. He explains that while he was working with Dr. Neblett for 2-3 months, he had a taste of the “Blue Michigan Kool-Aid” and realized that all of the research he wanted to do was coming out of Michigan. He also recalls that Michigan produces more black PhDs than any university in the country, except for Howard University, which is an HBCU. Therefore, our discussion transitioned to how he ended up at the University of Michigan. After sharing some fond memories of attending the University of Michigan and advice for those interested in the field of psychology, he shares how he found the opportunity to work as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stanford University immediately following graduation. Among other things, he shared a resource that he looked at and refreshed every day called Psychology Job Wiki which is a crowdsourced site that provides information to potential applicants about the open academic job opportunities in the field of psychology. Throughout our discussion, Dr. Roberts shared useful suggestions and advice for students interested in psychology and as well as advice for those beginning their professional career in the field of psychology including making it a priority to spend time writing every day. He also shares what a “typical” day looks like as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Though his days may vary, he admits that the thing that is consistent across all of his days is that he writes every day, typically in the morning. He states “before all the other stuff that I have to do that's going to take away my time, I know that for me, writing is the most important, and my favorite part of the job.” When asked what his favorite term, principle, or theory was, he stated that the fundamental attribution error, which was coined by Lee Ross who was in his department and who passed away last year, applies to many aspects of life. Later in the podcast, Dr. Roberts also said that he enjoys and values a principle called “The Overview Effect” which is the phenomenon which describes the psychological effects astronauts experience after traveling in space. Dr. Roberts is a unique individual with an interesting journey to share. The CDC reports that Black mothers die at three to four times the rate of white mothers and that the mortality rate of Black infants is higher than that of any other ethnic group in the U.S. Regardless of income and education level, childbirth for Black women is more dangerous than it is for white women. Even tennis legend Serena Williams had a dangerously close call during her pregnancy. In examining why these disparities are so stark, it is clear that structural and systemic racism, racialized health inequities, and implicit bias not only play a role but also signify areas within our society that desperately need improvement. The CDC reports that Black mothers die at three to four times the rate of white mothers and that the mortality rate of Black infants is higher than that of any other ethnic group in the U.S. Regardless of income and education level, childbirth for Black women is more dangerous than it is for white women. Dr. Parag R. Kachalia is a Tenured Associate Professor and the former Vice Chair of Simulation, Technology and Research and at the University of the Pacific. He is a fellow of the International and American College of Dentists as well as the American Dental Education Association’s leadership institute. Dr. Kachalia is also a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society. In addition, he is a researcher, as well as a published author in the areas of dental technology, digital diagnostics, contemporary fixed prosthodontics, and financial management. In 2017 Dr. Kachalia was selected as one of the Top 10 Young Educators in Dentistry in the United States. He has lectured internationally in the areas of adhesive dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, photography, CAD/CAM technology, fixed prosthodontics, treatment planning, erosion, and digital diagnostics. Dr. Kachalia acts a consultant for many dental materials/dental technology companies and helps guide product development. Dr. Kachalia is a member of the Seattle Study Club and Catapult Speaker’s Bureau. He is also a member of the Cellerant Best of Class selection committee. As a forward thinker, Dr. Kachalia is frequently interviewed regarding his vision of dentistry’s future. Throughout his time in academia he has maintained a private practice geared toward restorative dentistry with his wife and fellow Pacific alum Dr. Charity Duncan. He believes his continual involvement in providing patient care as well as a role in academia has given him a unique balance that allows him to blend the best of both worlds. My guest for the most recent episode was an AI expert Roman Yampolskiy. While listening to our conversation, you will fine-tune your understanding of AI from a safety perspective. Those of you who have decision- making authority in the IT Security world will appreciate Roman's viewpoint on AI Safety. Major Take-Aways From This Episode: 1) Wire heading or Mental Illness with Machines - Miss aligned objectives/incentives for example what happens when a sales rep is told to sell more new customers, but ignores profits. Now you have more customers but less profit. Or you tell your reps to sell more products and possibly forsake the long term relationship value of the customer. There are all sorts of misaligned incentives and Roman makes this point with AIs. 2) I can even draw a parallel with coaching my girls' teams where I have incented them to combine off each other because I want this type of behavior. This can also go against you because you end up becoming really good at passing but not scoring goals to win. 3) AI Decision making: The need for AIs to be able to explain themselves and how they arrived at their decisions. 4) The IT Security implications of AI Chat bots and Social Engineering attacks. 5) The real danger of Human Level AGI Artificial General intelligence. 6) How will we communicate with systems that are smarter than us? We already have a hard time communicating with dogs, for example, how will this work out with AIs and humans? 7) Why you can't wait to develop AI safety mechanisms until there is a problem.....We should remember that seat belts were a good idea the day the first car was driven down the road, but weren't mandated till 60 years after... 8) The difference between AI safety and Cybersecurity.
