Bridging the Gap
It's Crucial to Prioritize Preventative Maintenance

Bridging the Gap

You're probably familiar with building assessments and forensic engineering, but what's the essential role they play in long-lasting infrastructure? In this episode, Stanley Stoll of Knott Laboratory, LLC joins the podcast for an in-depth discussion on identifying and preventing structural failures, how preventative is “too” preventative, the problem of water management, and a new take on what it means to be innovative. Stanley Stoll is CEO of Knott Laboratory, LLC. He was a combat engineer and SAPPER in the U.S. Army. He attended the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY and graduated with both a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Masters of Engineering Degree. At Knott Laboratory, he leads a team of forensic engineers who investigate infrastructural failures throughout the Western US.  Todd Takes Proactive Building Maintenance: Take the time to learn and implement best practices in building maintenance, ensuring a proactive approach to analyzing the structure. Stay vigilant for any areas of concern, as early detection and action can prevent costly and dangerous issues down the line. Building Trust and Credibility: Establishing trust and credibility is essential before people will listen and act on your insights. When you identify a problem and have already built trust, the conversation becomes much smoother, leading to quicker and more effective resolutions. Treat Maintenance Like Construction: Stanley emphasizes the importance of treating property maintenance with the same level of care, attention, and critical eye as the building process itself. This mindset ensures that maintenance is not an afterthought but a crucial part of preserving the building's integrity.   Thanks for listening! n this episode of Benevolent AI, safety researcher Dr. Roman Yampolskiy speaks with Host Dr. Ryan Merrill about societal concerns about controlling superintelligent AI systems. Based on his knowledge of what the top programmers are doing, Roman says at the most there is only a four year window - at most - to implement safety mechanisms before AI capabilities exceed human intelligence and are able to rewrite its own code. And that window could even be as short as one year from now. Either way, there's not much time left. Yampolskiy discusses the current approaches to instilling ethics in AI, as well as the bias shaped by the programmer who determines what is helpful or ethical. Yampolskiy advocates for a pause on development of more capable AI systems until safety is guaranteed. He compared the situation to the atomic bomb. Technology is advancing rapidly, so programmers urgently needs to establish social safeguards. More engagement is needed from the AI community to address these concerns now, to address the worst case scenario, then any positive outcome is a bonus. With all the risks of advanced AI, it also presents tremendous opportunities to benefit humanity, but safety first. #Benevolent #ai #safetyfirst Watch on Youtube @BetterWorlds # About Roman V. For this episode I was very pleased to be once again joined by Roman Yampolskiy. Dr. Yampolskiy is a professor in the department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and has authored dozens of peer-reviewed academic papers and some books. In this discussion, I first asked my guest about the recent AGI-21 conference organised by Ben Goertzel's SingularityNET, held in San Francisco from the 15th to the 18th October, to which he remotely contributed. Roman summarised his presentation on AI Controllability, an incredibly important topic from an AI risk standpoint, but one that has not received nearly enough attention. The conference provided a neat segue into the topic comprising the bulk of our discussion, namely AGI, or artificial general intelligence. I threw plenty at my interviewee, primarily perspectives gleaned from some papers and books, as well as interviews, to which I was recently exposed. However, Roman parried most of my challenging salvos with impressive aplomb. I then shifted focus to some provocative possible future scenarios, both positive and negative, involving AI systems gaining greater intelligence and competency. Lastly, we ventured onto more personal terrain as I asked Roman about his family's move to the United States, his interest in computers, intellectual influences, and what the secret is to his astonishing productivity. He is known for his work on behavioral biometrics, the security of cyberworlds & artificial intelligence safety. He founded the field of intellectology – the analysis of the forms & limits of intelligence. He is director of the Cyber Security Laboratory in the department of Computer Engineering &Computer Science at the Speed School of Engineering. Roman has written over 100 publications, including many books spanning these fields. In these Sentientist Conversations, we talk about the two most important questions: “what’s real?” & “what matters?” To catch the cameo from Luna the puppy ("seems conscious") watch the video of our conversation here. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel while you're there. We discuss: Growing up in the Soviet Union. Not much religion around. Not meeting anyone religious until coming to the US as an adult Not finding religious arguments interesting or compelling Fascination with intersection of big ideas, philosophy, science Questions can come from religion, but standards of evidence come from science Comfort with others holding supernatural beliefs – helps us remain open-minded Is god analogous with someone running a world simulation? We need to get better at evaluating evidence. Should be separate from theories/hypotheses The need for scientific humility Deep fakes Freedom as an ethical foundation, subject to not hurting others or restricting the freedom of others Can we develop a pop-up AI that guides our ethics? Consciousness / sentience warrants protection Can Artificial Intelligences achieve consciousness or even super-consciousness? Humans might need to beg future AIs for our rights, as we grant rights to animals The hypocrisy of thinking animals should have rights, but enjoying eating them (theory vs. practice & cognitive dissonance) Why so many AI researchers are ready to acknowledge AI sentience but forget or disregard non-human animal sentience Consciousness, sentience, qualia, the “Hard Problem”, David Chalmers Assessing sentience The role of observers in quantum physics. Could there be some non-material element of consciousness? Meeting Luna the puppy “Seems conscious!” Will future AIs warrant protection/rights Ending animal farming to set a good example to our future AI overlords AIs will prefer “sentientism” to “humanism” Substrate independence Sentience/consciousness as a spectrum, simple to super (beyond human) Ethical challenges with non-sentient AI If human agents can’t agree (value alignment problem), can we even move towards a shared environment that will make us all happy? Maybe everyone could have their own individual virtual world! Even a positively negotiated shared environment wouldn’t be as good for each of us as a perfect individual environment – just don’t switch it off Can animal farming go away in a few years via clean-meat etc? Veganism and moral resolutions to cognitive dissonance, vs. tech alternatives removing blockers The dangers of disenfranchising humans if we grant rights too broadly (e.g. to trillions of bacteria or sentient AIs) Equal vs. degrees of moral consideration “Most of us will be as ethical as our choices”.

If you don’t understand that then maybe you should dig for more information before you react. For one second drop your guard and ask yourself why you’re really so angry and opinionated. Is it because if you admit there’s truth in the outcry... you now have a sense of responsibility? Patriotism isn’t about respecting items or things. My guest for the most recent episode was an AI expert Roman Yampolskiy. While listening to our conversation, you will fine-tune your understanding of AI from a safety perspective. Those of you who have decision- making authority in the IT Security world will appreciate Roman's viewpoint on AI Safety. Major Take-Aways From This Episode: 1) Wire heading or Mental Illness with Machines - Miss aligned objectives/incentives for example what happens when a sales rep is told to sell more new customers, but ignores profits. Now you have more customers but less profit. Or you tell your reps to sell more products and possibly forsake the long term relationship value of the customer. There are all sorts of misaligned incentives and Roman makes this point with AIs. 2) I can even draw a parallel with coaching my girls' teams where I have incented them to combine off each other because I want this type of behavior. This can also go against you because you end up becoming really good at passing but not scoring goals to win. 3) AI Decision making: The need for AIs to be able to explain themselves and how they arrived at their decisions. 4) The IT Security implications of AI Chat bots and Social Engineering attacks. 5) The real danger of Human Level AGI Artificial General intelligence. 6) How will we communicate with systems that are smarter than us? We already have a hard time communicating with dogs, for example, how will this work out with AIs and humans? 7) Why you can't wait to develop AI safety mechanisms until there is a problem.....We should remember that seat belts were a good idea the day the first car was driven down the road, but weren't mandated till 60 years after... 8) The difference between AI safety and Cybersecurity.
