Anne-Charlotte DepondtImage teaser © photo by Agata Kadar ; London, UK: details of modern white structure of the British Museum by Foster + Partners architectsIngénierie son : Julien Rebours____Si le podcast COM D'ARCHI vous plaît n'hésitez pas :. From 2023 May 10 to August 7, the Centre Pompidou (or "Beaubourg" for those who know him well ;-) ) is dedicating an exhibition to a major world figure in architecture: Sir Norman Foster, PRITZKER Prize. This world-renowned architect is at the head of one of the world's largest architectural firms, Foster + Partners, which designed, for example, the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, and the Millau Viaduct. His rise has been meteoric. He himself says Architect's of the world (...) don't take yourselves so seriously. In addition to this flagship exhibition, this event is an opportunity for us to question the figure of the architect! The Hearing Architecture podcast, proudly sponsored by Brickworks, presents Again and Again and Again, a mini-series hosted by Hilary Duff. Each week, we will bring you interviews and conversations as we seek better ways to understand, harness and deploy the expertise and knowledge of professionals currently within the design community, at home and abroad. Our guests are all experts on circularity within the building industry and share the aim to display that waste is not an accident but the consequence of decisions made at the design stage. Here is our opportunity. We, as designers, have an opportunity to do better. The architectural endeavour yields two distinctive outcomes, the addition of a building and the subtraction of a void. As construction takes shape -a curated assembly of materials, a corresponding void emerges in a location where these materials originally sourced, generally from elsewhere in the world. For years, designers have only been asked to consider result one: the building. But we've entered an age where architecture can no longer look over the impact of where and how materials are exploited. In this episode, I meet with Andy Coward, a Danish and UK-based structural engineer with 17 years of experience designing buildings and bridges, burning man installations, Apple stores, football stadiums, and architectural offices. Andy spent many of these years as an associate partner at Foster + Partners in London, where he first dappled in architectural projects. A shift to Scandinavia with his appointment as head of engineering at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in Copenhagen continued this trajectory, ignited his search for innovation within practice, and furthered his investigation into how structural materials can address climate change. His search for a fresh approach to making, designing, and using concrete led to the founding of his current practice Net Zero projects and one of his first offerings: the low-carbon structural system Minimass. Many within this circularity field talk about the requirement to move away from concrete and cement as a material. But here, we see Andy taking a different approach. Recognising that the world cannot stop its addiction to concrete overnight, he is instead advocating within the existing system helping it shift towards a better future. He asks how we can best use this material, how we can reduce our quantities, and be tactical in our composition of materials to allow concrete structures to live for longer. It's a logical evolution of a design philosophy: use the right material in the right place for the right purpose – no more, no less. In our discussion, Andy talks about two big challenges faced during construction: 1. The cost of materials: people have and will always fret about this. It's not new. 2. Carbon – A matter finally and importantly garnering more interest. It is becoming more and more apparent that these two items are intrinsically tied to each other and will only become more so as the availability of materials decreases, and the impacts of carbon become more apparent on our environment. Andy was challenged to create a system that focuses on reducing both at the same time. Andy notes that he is not a materials scientist – he will leave the invention of new materials to others. He is not a ‘robot' guy, not a software programmer, but is a designer. He has questioned how he can use this background to create a system which uses less. Less material and less labour. Today we begin our discussion with an analysis of our past, and how there may be clues to suggest the types of thinking we should apply to our current practice. Among other things we discuss the spectrum of beautiful and innovative concrete structures which emerged during the 20 century and modernism. Parabolic shells and thin arches with their fantastic use of minimal material and with a focus on forces in tension and compression. They emerged from a time when materials were scarce but labour was cheap. Our discussion today queries what will happen in the future where materials are again in short supply, but the cost of construction means we must think differently. This has been Again&Again&Again, a mini-series of Hearing Architecture, proudly sponsored by Brickworks, made possible with the support of the Alastair Swayn Foundation, and recorded during a period of residency with the Danish Arts Association in Copenhagen. Thank you so much for listening and thank you to our international guest Andy Coward, of Net Zero Projects. Thank you for sharing how your innovative structural solutions open many benefits, opportunities and push the boundaries of the rigid systems we work within. Let's watch this space and we look forward to speaking with you again in the future. Our sponsor Brickworks also produces architecture podcasts hosted by Tim Ross. More and more people are living in our cities and as urban populations grow, so does the need to provide housing. Yet, building homes is often perceived to come at a high price: the destruction of natural landscapes and biodiversity. What are the innovative solutions in this space? And, is there political will to help promote these projects? In this panel discussion, we were joined by Anis Abou Zaki, Partner in Environmental Design and Sustainability at Foster + Partners; Aileen Evans, CEO of Grand Union Housing Group; Dusty Gedge, International Ambassador for the European Federation of Green Roof and Wall Associations and Jess Kennedy, Climate & Sustainability Associate Director at Arup. The discussion was moderated by Kate Turner, a consultant, working in the space between decarbonisation and the digital sector. This event was hosted in partnership with Mars Wrigley UK and recorded as part of a live webinar on 6 November 2023.
In this session, panellists drive forward the discussion around optimum ways of retrofitting existing properties as a major component of decarbonising the built environment, focusing on the optimum mix of technologies, materials and strategies, as well as financing models for retrofitting at scale. A zero-carbon world will continue to need high-quality built environments. To achieve full decarbonisation across these environments, companies cannot focus just on their own emission reduction but also on supporting an overall net-zero transition of buildings ' from raw materials, to finished structure and including their heating, cooling and management. Panellists will drive forward the discussion around how to join up these efforts. [...] Hébergé par Acast. Because, between yesterday when the reign of the star architect was rampant and today when everything is smoothed out and values are stupidly annihilated, where are we?Anne-Charlotte DepondtImage teaser © photo by Agata Kadar ; London, UK: details of modern white structure of the British Museum by Foster + Partners architectsSound engineering : Julien Rebours___If you like the podcast do not hesitate:. to subscribe so you don't miss the next episodes,. to leave us stars and a comment :-),. to follow us on Instagram @comdarchipodcast to find beautiful images, always chosen with care, so as to enrich your view on the subject.Nice week to all of you ! This episode was recorded as a live broadcast on 18 July 2022. Every space we share – offices, schools, parks, and pubs – ought to be shaped by the cultures of those who design, build, and use them. But there is a worry that people feel alien in what should be familiar and welcoming places, owing to narrowness of thinking in how we design public and civic spaces, and for whom. This event brings together top architects, urban planners, and policy experts to explore how to make the shared spaces in our cities and communities more welcoming and accommodating to an increasingly diverse public – and ultimately how to make our civic spaces a place for everyone. The discussion will explore how we can design public spaces – parks, squares, neighbourhoods – to help people of different cultures interact and enjoy each other. How do we bring together people in a multitude of places to celebrate their differences and engage in cultural exchange? How do we preserve, promote, and integrate cultural markers in our cities in a way that celebrates history and diversity? MODERATED BY: Paul Owens – Paul is Director of BOP Consulting and Founder of the World Cities Culture Forum. ON THE PANEL: Shanaz Gulzar – Chair of the Bradford City of Culture Bid 2025 Sunder Katwala – Director of UK think-tank British Future Harriet Wennberg – Executive Director of INTBAU Armstrong Yakubu – Senior Partner at Foster + Partners

Angela Westwater at 257 Bowery, 2020, photo by Alexei Hay Angela Westwater co-founded Sperone Westwater Fischer in 1975 with Italian art dealer Gian Enzo Sperone and German gallerist Konrad Fischer, opening a space at 142 Greene Street in SoHo, New York. (The gallery's name was changed to Sperone Westwater in 1982.) An additional space was later established at 121 Greene Street. The founders' original program showcased a European avant-garde alongside a core group of American artists to whom its founders were committed. Notable early exhibitions include a 1977 show of minimalist works by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, and Sol Lewitt; seven of Bruce Nauman's seminal early shows; six early Gerhard Richter shows; two Cy Twombly exhibitions in 1982 and 1989; eleven Richard Long exhibitions; and the installation of one of Mario Merz's celebrated glass and neon igloos in 1979 -- part of the gallery's ongoing dedication to Arte Povera artists, including Alighiero Boetti. Other early historical exhibitions at the Greene Street space include a 1989 group show, "Early Conceptual Works," which featured the work of On Kawara, Bruce Nauman, Alighiero Boetti, and Joseph Kosuth, among others; a 1999 Fontana exhibition titled "Gold: Gothic Masters and Lucio Fontana"; and selected presentations of work by Piero Manzoni. From May 2002 to May 2010, the gallery was located at 415 West 13 Street, in a 10,000-square foot space in the Meatpacking District. In September 2010, Sperone Westwater inaugurated a new Foster + Partners designed building at 257 Bowery. Today, over 45 years after its conception, the gallery continues to exhibit an international roster of prominent artists working in a wide variety of media. Artists represented by Sperone Westwater include Bertozzi & Casoni, Joana Choumali, Kim Dingle, Shaunté Gates, Jitish Kallat, Guillermo Kuitca, Wolfgang Laib, Helmut Lang, Amy Lincoln, Richard Long, Emil Lukas, David Lynch, Heinz Mack, Mario Merz, Katy Moran, Malcolm Morley, Bruce Nauman, Otto Piene, Alexis Rockman, Susan Rothenberg, Tom Sachs, Peter Sacks, Andrew Sendor, and William Wegman. Past exhibitions, press, and artworks can be found on the gallery website. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Westwater received her BA from Smith College and her MA from New York University. She arrived in New York City in 1971 and landed her first job as a “gallery girl” at the John Weber Gallery at 420 West Broadway. From 1972 to 1975, she served as Managing Editor of Artforum magazine. In 1975, the same year the gallery was founded, Westwater was appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, where she has served as President since 1980. The books mentioned in the interview are The Free World, Art and Thought in the Cold War by Louis Menand and A Life of Picasso, The Minotaur Years by John Richardson. Joana Choumali, Untitled (Ça Va Aller), 2019, mixed media, 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (24 x 24 cm), 16 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches (41,3 x 41,3 cm) Joana Choumali, WE ARE STILL NOW, 2022, mixed media, 4 parts; 38 1/2 x 78 inches (97,8 x 198,1 cm)
Episode 25. AJ Climate Champions with Hattie Hartman. In this episode, we hear from structural engineer Hanif Kara who is working with leading architects on projects across the globe for ambitious clients with resources to deliver sustainable outcomes, including Google, Apple and British Land. Recent projects include Grafton's Stirling-Prize winning Town House in Kingston, Grafton's Marshall Building at the LSE, Foster + Partners' Bloomberg building and the new Google headquarters currently on site at King's Cross with Bjarke Ingels and Thomas Heatherwick. In contrast with most of our guests so far, Hanif is not a Climate Champion from way back, but we're delighted to have him on the pod because he is at the forefront of what is being delivered on the ground now and his design-led approach is pushing best practice. In this episode, he advocates reverse-engineering as a forensic method that utilises complex computational methods to retrofit and extending existing buildings.

“But if all you can see is this frozen façade, that's the period that you're choosing to keep the public appearance of the building as, which doesn't really create any meaningful dialogue between the old and the new.” Facadism or facadism practices, as Clemency Gibbs refers to them, stand for “privileging of the façade above other aspects of the building, within the context of development.” There is an intriguing conservation practice where entire buildings are gutted for (re)development but their facades are kept intact to retain a certain architectural character at the scale of the street, the neighborhood or even the city. Clemency is a PhD researcher in Architectural & Urban History & Theory at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, and has degrees in both Classics and Cultural Heritage. She previously worked as a heritage consultant and as a researcher at Foster + Partners. She is currently an early-stage researcher at UN-Habitat's MetroHub. In this episode I speak with Richard John Andrews. Richard is the Owner and Director of Richard John Andrews Ltd. establishing his architecture and design studio in 2017. Richard's design studio came about organically after completing a self-build project of his own home 'the cork house' as well as a design collaboration alongside an internationally renowned artist, Conrad Shawcross RA. Having studied architecture at the respected Canterbury School of Architecture, Richard acquired both RIBA part I and RIBA part II qualifications. Richard achieved a first class with honours at RIBA part II and was also nominated for the RIBA Silver President's Medal for his thesis work. Richard has also worked for several award-winning architectural firms including Foster + Partners, Michaelis Boyd Associates & DOS Architects helping to design numerous projects ranging from large scale commerce buildings to domestic residences. In this episode Richard discusses the different pathway he has taken towards becoming an architect, one which has led him to accruing a large amount of project leadership and practical construction experience in his own business prior to becoming a registered architect. This untraditional sequence of experience and registration raises pertinent questions about the process of becoming qualified which are discussed here. Sean Sutcliffe co-founded high-end furniture maker, Benchmark, with the late Sir Terence Conran in the early ’80s, when he was fresh out of Parnham College. Initially, he produced work for The Conran Shop, Heals and Habitat, before helping Terence change the face of the London restaurant scene by creating furniture and fittings for Bibendum and Quaglino’s. Subsequently, Benchmark has gone on to do commissions for the likes of the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the Eden Project, Vodafone’s world headquarters, and The Gherkin (or 30 St Mary Axe) to name just a few. Sutcliffe has also collaborated with the likes of Foster + Partners and David Rockwell and has just launched a new chair collection with the up-and-coming designer, Mac Collins. Most recently, the company made all the pieces for the Connected project – organised by the American Hardwood Export Council and on show at the Design Museum until 14 October 2020 – which featured furniture made from designers such as, Thomas Heatherwick, Jaime Hayon, Maria Bruun and Ini Archibong, among others. Starting with a team of three, the firm now employs 70 people. In other words, Sean has built a hugely successful business around skill, craft and, of course, wood.In this episode we talk about: his relationship with Sir Terence; how his love of timber began; studying at the legendary Parnham College under John Makepeace; finding the heart of a craftsman; the future of work; and the importance of apprenticeships. It’s searingly honest and really quite emotional. Today's guest is Mitch Lewandowski, Chief Commercial Officer at Branch Technology, a prefabrication and technology company that specializes in large-scale 3D printing. Branch Technology offers a patented 3D printing process called Cellular Fabrication. This unique printing method allows material to solidify in open space, creating a matrix of polymer in virtually any shape. Our conversation with Mitch is all about the amazing technological innovations at Branch Technology and what this means for construction! Mitch shares the story of Branch Technology's genesis and the groundbreaking mix of hardware, software, and polymer that makes what they do possible. Before open form 3D printing, the built world was confined to blocks and beams, but Branch Technology's founder Platt Boyd took inspiration from cellular formations when he invented their products and process. Mitch talks about how Branch Technology won the NASA Centennial Challenge a few years back with Foster + Partners, and he considers the use their technology would provide toward our mission to colonize Mars. Along with this, we get into what a typical project would look like for Branch Technology on the front and back end, hearing Mitch describe that he sees clients' jaws dropping on a regular basis! Mitch also touches on why they prioritize design freedom over load-bearing but this will not last forever, some of their most outstanding projects to date, and a whole lot more, so be sure to tune in!

The final piece of the 28-acre Hudson Yards puzzle, 50 Hudson Yards will be a supertall, 2.9 million-ft2 commercial property developed by Oxford Properties Group and Mitsui Fudosan. The first building one sees when riding the escalators up from the Hudson Yards subway station, 50 Hudson Yards is rising between Kohn Pedersen Fox’s completed 30 Hudson Yards and the under-construction 66 Hudson Boulevard, also known as The Spiral, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group. It will sit only 120 ft shy of The Edge — the highest observation deck in the Western Hemisphere — at 30 Hudson Yards. The attraction had been expected to open today. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today’s podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com NEW RENDERINGS SHOW HOW 2 WTC WOULD FIT INTO NYC SKYLINE Four new renderings show how 2 World Trade Center (WTC), originally conceived by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, would fit into the NYC skyline, New York YIMBY reports. The British architect recently won a second chance at designing the supertall at 200 Greenwich Street from developer Silverstein Properties, and the renderings, by YIMBY and Instagram user Sinaevart, provide a look at what could become the second-tallest skyscraper in lower Manhattan after the 1,776-ft-tall One WTC. The first shows the four diamond-shaped structures on the crown pointing down toward the 9/11 Memorial, the second is a morning view from Midtown that obscures 3 WTC, the third is a sunset view from New York Harbor beyond the Statute of Liberty and the fourth is from Hudson Square that accentuates the original design’s dark centerline. A new design could look considerably different, and a construction timeline for what would be the final piece of the WTC complex puzzle will depend on landing an anchor tenant. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today’s podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com FOSTER WINS ANOTHER SHOT AT TWO WORLD TRADE CENTER DESIGN The job for the design of Two World Trade Center, a long-awaited tower for the WTC complex in NYC's Financial District, has been returned to original architect Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, New York YIMBY reports. Also known as 200 Greenwich Street, the proposed tower would be the final piece of the 16-acre site. Foster's original 2006 design envisioned a diamond-topped skyscraper, with the shapes pointing down at the reflecting pools of the 9/11 Memorial. The project stalled in the early 2010s, and, in 2015, the design work was transferred to Bjarke Ingels of BIG, who proposed a tower composed of a stack of giant glass blocks. Construction was delayed after potential anchor tenant 21st Century Fox and News Corp. withdrew, and in 2018, Larry Silverstein, head of developer Silverstein Properties, indicated to YIMBY that Foster's design was still under consideration. The Foster design called for a 79-story, 1,350-ft-tall, glass tower holding just under 3 million ft2 of office space. The report indicated that Foster's original design would be "updated," but no specifics or renderings were given. Honesty in buildings and materials is a very architectural concept. But what does 'honesty' mean when we speak about architectural photography and why is it important to consider when marketing our services? In this discussion I am joined by PR Maestro Rob Fiehn and Jim Stephenson, a photographer film maker whose unique body of work has been beautifully documenting the built environment and its untold stories for the last decade. This has lead him to work with the likes of BIG; Herzog & de Meuron; Assemble; Zaha Hadid Architects; Foster & Partners; Rogers, Stirk Harbour and Partners; JRural Studio; Sou Fujimoto Architects; 6a and many others.. In this episode you will hear us discuss: - Why the Art of striking the perfect balance between 'realism' and 'creative license' in the photography of your projects is essential to getting published - The important distinctions between different types of architectural photography and when and where to use them to maximise their effectiveness - Why it's important to understand the usage license and rights on your pictures and why crediting your photographer helps the whole industry! Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com LONDON TULIP APPROVED BY PLANNERS Planners have approved the proposed Tulip, a 305-m-tall cultural attraction in downtown London (ELENET 762 and 770), the BBC recently reported. City of London Corp. said it was "truly unique" and would help increase the number of visitors at the Square Mile. They also contended that any harm done by its view blocking or ostentatiousness would be "less than substantial" and outweighed by the "benefits" of the proposal. However, London Mayor Sadiq Khan still has to sign off, and Greater London Authority planners have 14 days to respond. Khan has “significant concerns with the design approach” and design, he wrote in January. The authority previously advised the Tulip failed to follow the London Plan, BBC also reported. If approved, the Foster + Partners-designed, Jacob J. Safra-owned tower (like the Gherkin) would be built at 20 Bury Street beside the Gherkin. Join in this refreshing conversation with Tiana Lemons, Senior Associate, Healthcare Studio Leader for architectural firm Orcutt | Winslow’s Nashville office. For the past 25 years, Tiana has given her talent to designing healthcare facilities across the country. Both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations have benefited from her keen eye and design sensibilities, including HCA, The Healthcare Corporation of America, and Regional Care. My favorite part of this conversation was how Tiana brought me into her world of healthcare design, how she stays organized on big projects and how she combines her vision for a project with the vision of her strategic partners--developers and architects alike. Detail-oriented and highly organized, Tiana is an interior designer with business know-how. She has a positive, creative, and innovative approach to design. She presents a strong visual style with a high level of design ability, experience, professionalism, and the capacity to manage multiple projects. Tiana is also a leader within her profession. A member of IIDA since 1991, she has served on the IIDA TN Chapter board for the past 5 years and continues to serve in an advisory role to the board. She has also volunteered as a liaison for IIDA headquarters to the ASHE board of directors. At the 2016 ASHE Conference (in Denver), she presented alongside other design professionals for the “Design Trends to Support Patient Center Design.” She continues to mentor young professionals and leads by example. Presented alongside other design professionals at the 2016 ASHE Conference on the topic of “Design Trends to Support Patient Center Design” Most likely to be found at a Keith Urban concert—she saw him live seven times in one year. Does that make her a super fan? Yes. Tiana has got a heart of gold. She volunteers with multiple non-profit organizations and is always the first to lend a hand. FEATURED PRODUCT: NOKEN Porcelanosa’s Noken factory is dedicated to the production of brassware and sanitaryware, and has created different bathroom lines including: The [MOOD Series, created by Sir Richard Rogers and Luis Vidal](https://www.porcelanosa-usa.com/about-us/news/architecture-and-design-according-to-luis-vidal/) – the first intelligent bathroom collection The stunning [VITAE collection by Zaha Hadid](https://www.porcelanosa-usa.com/about-us/news/vitae-bathroom-concept-revolution-zaha-hadid/) – inspired by the movement and concept of water The [TONO collection from Foster + Partners](https://www.porcelanosa-usa.com/about-us/news/porcelanosa-foster-partners-present-tono/) – contemporary brilliance with coordinating modular furniture that’s unified with a simplistic design language and palette of materials Porcelanosa has created many innovative bathroom products, including the COLD – ON faucet. This faucet line stands out because Porcelanosa changed the opening mechanism so that when the faucet is turned on, it does not automatically dispense a blend of hot water. This feature can save hospitals and healthcare facilities thousands of gallons of hot water a year that never needed to be heated in the first place, or were needlessly discharged. These small aspects can help to make a big difference. Visit Porcelanosa to learn more about their intelligent bathroom designs.

Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com LONDON MAYOR OPPOSES PROPOSED DESIGN OF THE TULIP The proposed Tulip, a 305-m-tall cultural attraction in downtown London that would sit next to 30 St Mary Axe (commonly called the Gherkin), does not, in the mayor's view, comply the London Plan, dezeen reports. A letter published by Mayor Sadiq Khan said it had "significant concerns with the design approach" and that "the height appears unjustified." Government watchdog Historic England (HE) had earlier objected to the plan because it could mar views of World Heritage Site the Tower of London, Architects’ Journal reported in December 2018. The Tulip comes from the same team that developed the Gherkin, architects Foster + Partners and owner Jacob J. Safra. As designed, the structure would have a futuristic look and would include observation levels, glass slides and gondola pod rides. It would be among the tallest structures in the city. Today on the Hotel Design Podcast we have Lauren Rottet FAIA, FIIDA, Founding Principal and President of Rottet Studio. Lauren is one of the most celebrated interior designers and architects in the world and holds fellow status of both the American Institute of Architects and the International Interior Design Association. Lauren is a Lifetime Appointee to the U.S. General Services Administration’s National Register of Peer Professionals for Design Excellence. In addition to her extensive list of accolades, some of Lauren’s notable hospitality projects include the Langham in Hong Kong, Loews Regency Hotel in New York, the Viking Odin Class Ships, the St. Regis Aspen Resort, and The Beverly Hills Hotel Presidential Bungalows. Whilst her style is contemporary, Lauren treats each of her projects with precise detail and tailors design to the location and environment of the site. Sometimes when planning her designs, Lauren writes scripts and creates characters that move throughout the space so that she can look at the entire project through the eyes of the story’s incumbents. She explains this process with regard her plans for The Surrey in New York City – a historically protected building from the 1920s – which were ultimately inspired by Coco Chanel. The process led her to convince the owner to add a bar into the hotel’s design and has strong black and white accents throughout the building inspired by the iconic Chanel compact. Lauren intends for her designs to be timeless. A project designed correctly won’t date and will only become better over time. Lauren concludes the interview with tidbits of advice for up-and-coming designers, reminding them to take the time to learn and think through their designs completely. Enjoy this fascinating interview with Lauren, one of the greatest practitioners in global architecture and design. To learn more about Lauren and Rottet Studio, visit https://www.rottetstudio.com. #IwannagotoSpain with Eloy and Nina XXIV International Architecture & Interior Design Exposition in Spain In the world of porcelain, stone and ceramic wall & floor design, there are two key international exhibitions that take place every year - Cersaie in Bologna, Italy during the close of September and Cevisama in Valencia, Spain. Earlier this year, The Chaise Lounge along with sponsor Porcelanosa visited the Spanish Group's exhibition which ran concurrently with Cevisama. The following shows recap some of the highlights of the tour with guests sharing their individual and collective experience from the trip, the inspiration for which was the Chaise Lounge's social media competition #Let'sGoToSpain. Eloy Selles Eloy Selles is the General Manager of the West Coast of the United States for Porcelanosa. A native of Madrid, he can now be found in the company's Southern California offices. Eloy Selles and Nick discuss the itinerary that sees guests take in three major cities and eight factories over a whirlwind five day period, where the emphasis plays to enjoying all that Spain has to offer in culture, hospitality, gastronomy and of course, great design. Some of Porcelanosa's newest product launches that were displayed on the trip included Tono by Foster + Partners, Vitae by Zaha Hadid, K-LIFE by KRION®, and the Seedwood collection by VENIS. It is clear that Eloy Selles could not be happier or more proud than when he's hosting clients and guests in his homeland. The experience of touring the most modern High-Tec manufacturing facilities and artistically designed showrooms leaves visitors with lasting memories and inspiration. Nick recounts some of the highlights which included Santiago Calatrava's modern City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, the work of Antoni Gaudí' in Barcelona – from La SagradaFamília to Park Güell – and the countless restaurants and boutique hotels enjoyed along the way. Above: from left: Tomas Palomar: Porcelanosa International Division, Nick May: The Chaise Lounge, Nina Magon: Contour Interior Design, Pratibha Naware: Marriott International, Maria Jose Soriano: President of Porcelanosa Group, Kelli Ellis: Kelli Ellis Interior Design, Andrew Pennington: Porcelanosa USA, Lina Goldberg: HBG Design, Jessie Clayton: Jessie Clayton Designs Nina Magon Nina is the Principal of Contour Interior Design and was familiar with Porcelanosa before the trip but was not aware of the extent of the company's offering beyond tile. Nina chats with Nick about the value she gained from the experience, the sincerity of the customer service and absolute absence of any agenda to overtly promote product to the group at any point. Nina enjoyed everything on the trip during the group's hectic days together. One outstanding memory was the timely coincidence of joining the crowds in Valencia during the Las Fallas Festival. Enroute to Madrid the group had just finished touring the last factory in time to witness daytime fireworks with what seemed to be a million people celebrating Valencian culture in the center of the city in the early afternoon. Nina's undoubted opinion is that anybody who has the opportunity to join a Porcelanosa design trip to Spain is blessed, high praise indeed from a former guest on The Chaise Lounge. Currently, Nina and Contour Interior Design are working on a multitude of projects - including the owner suites at Minute Maid Park for the Houston Astros, a medical center and a 42,000 sq. ft. office building. Nina was also chosen as a blogger for the 2017 High Point Market to talk about her favorite products as a trend spotter for the new season. Her blog, Live Stylish Daily was awarded Best New Design Blog during the National Design Bloggers Conference in Atlanta and she'll join Nick on the Chaise Lounge High Point panel Hospitality Insiders Share All: What it Takes to be a Designer in the Hospitality Sector. https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/brandon-hubbard-1.jpg ()Brandon Hubbard, The Architect’s Guide This week on EntreArchitect Podcast, The Architect’s Guide with Brandon Hubbard. Background Brandon is a licensed architect based in San Francisco, California and the founder of http://TheArchitectsGuide.com (TheArchitectsGuide.com), dedicated to helping architects with their job application and career goals. He practiced architecture with https://www.fosterandpartners.com/ (Foster + Partners) in London where he worked on several high profile design projects, including Heathrow Terminal 3, the Bloomberg Headquarters and the Samba Bank Tower. Currently he's a senior architect in http://www.hellermanus.com/ (Heller Manus Architects )in San Francisco working on large scale commercial and residential projects. You may have seen him online posting about architecture careers on http://TheArchitectsGuide.com (TheArchitectsGuide.com) as well as a content provider at Arch Daily. Origin Story Brandon was born and raised in New Zealand until he was ten, when he moved to Montana. There he completed his schooling, including a masters in architecture from MSU Bozeman. During his last few years and after graduation he worked for a small firm in Bozeman. The small, five-person firm landed a $100 million residential project. In a short amount of time, Brandon gained a lot of experience. Following graduation, he enjoyed working on that large-scale project. Looking around Bozeman, he didn't see a lot of similar work readily available. He decided to look abroad, applying to several firms in London. He joined Foster and Partners and was there for 7 years. During his time there, he worked on a client base in Madrid, Spain and rode out the recession in 2008. He moved to San Francisco in 2014 to work with Heller Manas. When he arrived, he had to complete a supplemental exam and then used his free time to start http://TheArchitectsGuide.com (TheArchitectsGuide.com). What pulled you to London? Brandon had wanted to relocate to China, but he realized he had to be vaccinated for a six-month waiting period for a few different things. During the wait time, he looked at other places abroad and landed on London. After a few offers and a week-long visit, he ended up moving there. What brought you back to the US? Brandon felt like he reached a point where he had to decide on a country. He had family in the US and friends in London, and felt like he was always flying back and forth. Then, the AREs weren’t available in London, so he was constantly flying to and from. Based on the scale of his projects, he was between San Francisco and New York. Brandon wanted a change and to have the option of being more in the outdoors. What lessons would you want to share from that experience? One article Brandon wrote details why he thinks you maybe shouldn’t work abroad in architecture, https://www.thearchitectsguide.com/blog/working-abroad-in-architecture?rq=abroad (Is Working Abroad Bad For Your Architecture Career?). There are pros and cons to everything. Depending on your goals, it could be great. If your goal is to meet a diverse group of people and work on interesting projects, moving abroad and outside of your own comfort zone may be a good idea. One downside may be the disconnect between the US based regulations and local codes versus those in Europe. What inspired you to help other architects with their job search process? Part of it came from the number of emails he received of people wanting his advice on how to get a job at an iconic firm. When he looked over their resumes and noticed common problems. He had a lot of conversations about what he did to get noticed and hired. Once he gave the same advice several times, he decided to take the knowledge he’d accumulated and turn it into http://TheArchitectsGuide.com (TheArchitectsGuide.com). How did you get a job with only a...
