The recent shooting at Houston's Lakewood Church has left the community grappling with shock and sorrow as authorities delve into the complex background of the shooter, Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, whose documented mental health struggles raise troubling questions about gun ownership and public safety. According to reports, Moreno, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, opened fire at the renowned megachurch, injuring two individuals, including her own 7-year-old son, before law enforcement officers intervened, resulting in her death. Moreno's mother-in-law, Walli Carranza, emphasized that her daughter-in-law's mental illness was well-documented, citing a history of schizophrenia and an emotional detention order dating back to 2016. Carranza expressed profound regret that Moreno's condition was not adequately addressed, lamenting that such a tragedy could have been prevented had there been stronger mental health provisions and red flag laws in place to restrict firearm access for individuals in crisis. Authorities are working tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and uncover Moreno's motives. However, the investigation is compounded by the shooter's extensive criminal record, previous antisemitic writings, and a bitter divorce battle, all of which contribute to the complexity of understanding her actions. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner described the shooting as a "completely preventable horror," underscoring the urgent need for improved mental health support and firearm regulations to avert similar tragedies in the future. The lack of robust red flag laws in Texas, which could have enabled authorities to intervene and disarm Moreno, has sparked renewed calls for legislative action to safeguard public safety. As authorities continue their investigation, they are scrutinizing Moreno's social media presence, criminal history, and personal relationships to decipher any discernible motive behind the attack. The shooter's troubled past, marked by frequent encounters with law enforcement and episodes of erratic behavior, further underscores the need for comprehensive mental health reform and enhanced access to support services for vulnerable individuals. In the wake of this devastating incident, communities are grappling with the sobering reality of gun violence permeating places once considered safe havens. The Lakewood Church shooting serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for proactive measures to address mental health challenges and prevent tragedies of this nature from recurring. While the investigation into Moreno's motives is ongoing, the profound loss and anguish inflicted by this senseless act of violence serve as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to prioritize mental health advocacy and enact meaningful reforms to protect lives and ensure public safety. We most want things to be as we “think they should be” as opposed to how they truly are. Because of this we insist that people should never shoot up schools or churches or post offices when the reality is that anyone can shoot up any place regardless of laws passed or our feelings. Evil exists and can manifest itself at any time or place. This fact does nothing to dull our shock or anger at events, but it should inform our actions going forward. The Jewish community in New York is currently grappling with the dissonance of who they are - a religious community with multi-generational roots in family styled neighborhoods with a history of placid security - an American success story. And who their new neighbors are: anti-semites jealous of the prosperity Jews have created. The increase in attacks on American Jews in NYC has caused outsiders to insist that they arm themselves and defend their way of life. In response many have said “that is not who we are, that is not our way!” Which is a refusal to acknowledge the change in circumstances. Enter the OODA Loop. It's all crazy martinis today. Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America are furious as the Air Force discovers it never forwarded the court martial information on the Texas church shooter that would have prevented him from legally purchasing guns and Jim also details how the federal government often seems disinterested in prosecuting gun crimes. They also discuss the bizarre assault on Sen. Rand Paul by his neighbor in Kentucky and how the media just don't care when GOP lawmakers are targeted for violence. And they unload on 2016 independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin, who has spent the past year focused on criticizing President Trump at every turn while advancing nothing of value to conservatism - his latest move being to urge people not to vote for the GOP candidate for governor in Virginia.
