Have you failed? Did that failure stop you from moving forward? Did it get you stuck? Failure is a part of life. Ever watched a child learn to walk? Success only comes after repeated failures. Yet that same child keeps on trying, until the child gets it right. What happens in adulthood? Why does a fear of failing keep us from acting? When we don't take action for fear of failing, we have pre-emptively failed. We have already decided we would fail, so we never even start, guaranteeing we don't get to where you want to go. A few decades ago, I started a business. It failed miserably. And it kept me stuck for awhile. But one day, I realized there was something else to consider about that failure. There were some lessons I learned. Those are lessons I apply every single day. Let me suggest 3 questions that will help you turn a failure around, and make the failure simply another opportunity. I'll bet you know exactly what I mean by the Gut Punch Moment. It is when your spouse says, "I don't love you" or that variation, "I love you, but I'm not IN love with you." Or when you discover the affair or other marital infidelity (including financial). Or when you discover some other hidden part of your spouse's life that makes you question everything. Or when your spouse announces the need to separate. Or the divorce papers arrive. Gut punch. You lose your breath. You feel like a rug has been ripped from underneath your feet. Gut punch. And it might not be the first! It might be in the midst of efforts to save what you already know is a hurting marriage. Then, you find out more. Gut punch #2 (or 3, 4, 5....). It wouldn't be a surprise if you don't react the way you want to or wish you had. That is often what happens. And then, there is a spouse looking at you, surprised by your reaction (do remember that whatever that gut punch, they already knew it -- they had already prepared!). But what now? In this episode of the Save The Marriage Podcast, we cover that Gut Punch Moment, and what to do about it. Listen below. RELATED RESOURCES Calm in Chaos at Thriveology.com What About Anger? When I talk about Thriveology, many people say, “Oh, that is more of that ‘being happy' stuff, isn't it?" My response: No. Well, not just that. Sure, being happy is fine. No need to avoid being happy! But that is only one dimension of life. It IS the dimension of life that hedonism celebrates and pursues. If it feels good, do it. Enjoy life. Have a good time. Seek out pleasure and avoid pain. Except that doesn't lead much to thriving. It posits your satisfaction with life externally to you. It is THAT thing that makes you happy, brings you pleasure, makes life worthwhile. Eudaimonia was the counterpoint in greek thought. This is the pursuit of life satisfaction by what things mean to you internally. It is how you bring meaning, enjoyment, and satisfaction into your life from within. And there is a cornerstone of that: Contribution. What we GIVE to the world, versus what we GET from the world. Giving versus Taking. Research has long pointed out the power of giving and contributing to the mental health, wellbeing, meaning/purpose, and satisfaction of people to their lives. Which is why it is part of The Thrive Code. Listen below to learn why contribution matters and some principles of doing it. RELATED RESOURCES: Challenge Control Community Lee's Books

Effect on Emotions It's easy to be present when you're in a good mood. My challenge is when I'm upset about something. It's not like you're saying I'm not upset. Mindfulness is saying, ok, I'm upset, now what do I do about it. One of my practices has always been to have an activity where I have to be fully immersed. Scuba diving used to be one of my activities. Scuba diving meant that as soon as you starting getting ready for it, you'd better be thinking about that. That's all you did. The person who was my instructor and then my dive partner told me, it was like a mini vacation. For however long you're under water, it's only that. That was fully immersed, fully present, you can't be thinking about anything else. More recently my activity has been Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu is a practice in mindfulness because the last thing you want to do it let anger take you over when you're in the midst of sparring because this is not your enemy. Thoughts on Breathing I've always been very interested in breath and breathing. In my childhood I did Taekwondo and my instructor was always talking about doing diaphragmatic breathing. I was a chaplain for a number of years and I used diaphragmatic breathing to calm people down. You could watch their oxygen level just shoot up just by me coaching them through that. They used to call me into the ‘ER' just to help people get through an anxiety attack. That was something that I really tried to live into and anything that challenged that was difficult for me. We had moved about a year before and I didn't have a lot of friends. I had these sketch pads and I wanted to sketch, but part of dyslexia is dysgraphia and my drawing and handwriting was terrible and nothing good was coming out of the sketching. So there was this guy and I thought he was my best friend and he liked to draw so I gave him my sketch pads and didn't think anything about it. About a week later he started handing out these sketch pads saying I had drawn these soft porn kind of pictures on them. It was so anti-who-I-was. I was a straight-laced, going to church kid and my father was the pastor. I was respectful and this was nothing I would have drawn. I knew that I hadn't done it. It went around the circle and people were laughing at me and pointing at me and I saw him do it. It took me a while to figure out all it was and people were coming up to me and asking if I really drew all these pictures. I didn't. So that was the bullying moment. It left an impact. My mom was a guidance councellor in school and so I went to her and told her the situation. She said two things. She said if you put fuel on a fire it will burn hotter. If you let it go, it will burn out. Somebody else will be next up. You're going to have to decide whether you're going to put fuel on it or leave it alone. The second thing she said is, consider the source. I thought, why would that person act that way, why would he be hurtful to me. I realized it had nothing to do with me, it was his need for attention. Once I used those tools, I could look at him with empathy. I didn't have to become the enemy. It took about a week and it blew over. Related Episodes Practical No BS Self-Love With Blake D. How does a young man from the projects end up playing table tennis in North Korea... on a diplomacy mission? How he ended up there is not much different than how Wally Green ended up in Germany, becoming a world-class ping pong player, after leaving his gang past behind. I "met" Wally on a Zoom call with lots of others and knew I needed to have him on Thriveology. I wanted to talk with him because he had a handle on thriving. Not because he was making life look easy. But because he was taking life on. As a child, Wally was faced with domestic violence at home and gang violence outside. Even though he threw himself into sports as an escape, he didn't escape gang life. As he noted, it was a matter of survival. But guess was really saved Wally's life? Table tennis. How did he get there? Because he broke a stolen pool cue. And he took out his frustration on someone playing table tennis. One thing led to another... and there he was in North Korea. Really, Wally is the one who needs to tell the story. And he does, as I interview him in this episode of the Thriveology Podcast. You can listen below. Have you ever noticed how some people just seem to succeed at everything they do? They enjoy success in different areas of life... including financially. Then, others seem to struggle over and over, making little progress toward their goal. Noah St. John refers to this as "success anorexia," people starving themselves from success -- because they don't know better! In fact, my guest on this episode of the Thriveology podcast is Noah. The author of a number of books, Noah is also a frequent speaker, coach, and consultant with those who have tried all the other success strategies, but without success. In his research, Noah looked at what he calls the success "naturals," to see what they might be doing... and not even noticing they are doing. This led to his Power Habits. According to Noah, "We don't rise to the level of our goals, but fall to the level of our systems." And that is the level Noah addresses -- how to up-level your systems... and get rid of the "Head Trash," the self-defeating patterns of thought about why you can't do ______ (fill in the blank). As Noah points out, whatever self-talk we have, we make sure we are right. Listen to our discussion below. RELATED RESOURCES Noah's Book on Amazon Noah's Gifts at his Website My Series on Habits
Nicole started her coaching career as an employee trainer in a large organization and quickly learned that people wanted to learn more than the tasks on a job description. My friend tells me, "Aging ain't for sissy's, but I ain't ready for the alternative!" It happens to every single one of us who are fortunate enough for it to happen. We get older. Moment by moment, day by day, year by year... and hopefully, decade by decade. Personally, I am planning on being around for a long time. I'm already in what I refer to as "Bonus Time," after a health scare over 15 years ago. One of my things to do is look for "aging mentors." These are people who are older than me, at varying levels, who seem to be doing it right. Not so much in the fact that they are still alive, as in how they live. Ron Kaiser is one of those guys. 81 years old, still a full time psychologist, still doing yoga and exercising, still engaged in learning... still engaged in living. Recently, I had the good fortune of interviewing Ron. He and I met at a conference and I said, "I have to get you on Thriveology. Your information is important at any age!" And now, I have. Be sure and listen in to the interview below. RELATED RESOURCES: The Mental Health Gym Dealing with Grief Showing Up Your Thriving Body

On episode 43 of the show, we talk about nurturing growth mindsets at an early years level with Pam Rinn, Program Director for Community Professional Development (Instruction) at Camp Fire First Texas. We learn about the Thrive{ology} framework, which is a research-based, measurable approach to learning and development that emphasizes a balance between work, health and love. Pam shows us how the approach inspires learning in a safe environment that allows children to take risks while developing the skills needed to achieve their goals. All this builds a foundation for creative thinking and problem solving at an early age.
Anxiety. It sometimes seems to surround us. Sometimes, it can even overwhelm. But anxiety doesn't have to hold you back. You can learn to walk through life without allowing anxiety to control you. Have you noticed all the books, articles, and stories about increasing your happiness? Sounds great, doesn't it? I am certainly not opposed to happiness. I just think that chasing after happiness only chases happiness away. Oh, sure, we may feel a few fleeting moments of happiness. Just enough to lure us into the next book or article. But it doesn't stay. Happiness is elusive. At least when you chase after it. It arrives, though, when you allow it to be the after-effect or side-effect of something else -- something that will transform your life, and transform the world. Seek a life of impact. Go for discovering your purpose. Find your meaning. Happiness will show up. Learn why in this week's Thriveology podcast.
A decade ago, I started a business. It failed miserably. And it kept me stuck for awhile. But one day, I realized there was something else to consider about that failure. There were some lessons I learned. Those are lessons I apply every single day. Let me suggest 3 questions that will help you turn a failure around, and make the failure simply another opportunity. We all have the same question: "Who am I?" Today, I want to suggest there are some things we are NOT: We are NOT our thoughts. We are NOT our experiences. We are NOT others' opinions of us. Many times, we make the mistake and assume we are our thoughts, our experiences, or others' opinions. When that happens, we get stuck. We limit ourselves. We become uni-dimensional. Much of this starts in our thoughts. So, after I let you know why we are NOT our thoughts, our experiences, or the opinions of others, I focus on what to do with your thoughts. Do you make the mistake, at least from time to time, with confusing a thought with reality? Do you sometimes recognize a thought for what it is: a thought? How do we do less of the former and more of the latter? Listen to discover how!
The favorite word of a two year-old: "NO!" That toddler says it freely, with meaning and conviction. Many of us lose that capacity of "No" soon after. Instead of having control over our lives, we turn it over to others. We are asked to do something, and we say "yes," whether we want to or not. Guilt? Shame? There is some part of us that feels the need to say "yes" when asked. . . and in so doing, we lose control over our own lives. "No" has power. It helps you mark who you are and what you are about. . . but only if you use it. In truth, there is no way to say "YES" unless we can say "NO." If we cannot say no, we cannot fully commit to the yeses of life. Everything becomes a "Yes," which means we are not truly making a choice. But how do you say "No?" How do you choose when to say "No"? Join me on this week's Thriveology Podcast, as we explore the power of "NO."
Every person has circumstances that knock them down. A Japanese proverb says, Fall down seven times, get up eight. We can't stop the circumstances. They just happen. You don't have to seek them out. They will come. Illness, job loss, relationships ending, business loss, deaths, and any other life circumstances happen. That is the nature of life. A thriving life is not about what happens to you, but how you respond. Do you grow through the struggles or do you shrink from it? Do you rise up, or do you stay down? Do you grow, or do you flee? Yes, we all have grief from the losses. No question, we feel the grief. The question is, what do you do after the grief? How do you take on the struggles, make them challenges, and learn to triumph? In today's podcast, I give you 4 strategies to help you shift from victim to victor, and move from struggle to triumph. *
Anger. It can be frightening. It can push you away. It can push others away. And expressing anger does little to resolve anger. In fact, it often only feeds the anger, stoking the fire until it is dangerously out of control. Anger is a misunderstood emotion. In fact, it is in not the true emotion. Anger is the outer expression of the inner emotion of hurt. When we are hurt, we can feel vulnerable, scared, and hesitant. So, we don't express the hurt. We erupt in anger. The anger serves to push the source of the hurt away, but does nothing to soothe the hurt. We shouldn't be surprised, then, that the hurt persists and the anger grows. Resentment takes root, creating more destruction and damage. Is there another way? In this week's podcast, I provide you with 3 simple tools that will help you resolve the anger, once-and-for-all. Join me for this podcast. Then let me know what you think below! *
We fill every day up. In fact, we often fill every moment of every day up. And the moments pass. The days pass. We move from crisis to crisis, event to event. We try to do multiple things at the same time, and pretend it is a skill. In the process, we miss out on the richness of this moment. We miss out on being truly engaged in the world. Today, I have a special guest, Shawn Ellis. Shawn offers a different perspective. What if THIS moment (and this one, and this one. . . ) matters? To be more clear, what if WE realize that this moment matters? Shawn, like me, is always learning and growing. One day, he realized the moments were passing him by in a blur. An entrepreneur, business owner, husband, and father, Shawn was pulled in all directions -- defaulting to the myth of multi-tasking. One day, he realized that life was passing him by, even as Shawn was trying to live. What Shawn discovered is something he is now sharing with people and companies all over: This Moment Matters. After listening to our discussion, you can visit Shawn at This Moment Matters (http://thismomentmatters.com).
That tiny little voice whispers to us: "Don't do it. Don't try it. You can't do it. You won't make it." That little voice of doubt. Do you have it? You do. How do I know? We ALL have it. We all believe we are the only ones suffering from those feelings of doubt. But those doubts are universal. Nobody is immune. When you look at someone and see confidence, you might believe differently. That confidence is the outward emotion. It doesn't mean the internal feeling is of self-doubt and fear. The very talented and famous actor, Sir Laurence Olivier, suffered from stage fright. Yet his performances sparkled. His great acting was not because he had no doubt, no fear. It was in spite of his fears and doubts. Sometimes, we find it easier to give in to the fears and doubts. We decide to "play it small," to avoid the challenge. And in the end, we allow the self-doubt to win. In this week's podcast, I offer a 3 step process to stop self-doubt in its tracks. Don't let self-doubt keep you stuck!
Do you believe there is something heroic within you? Is there a place of bravery within you, calling you to a higher purpose and a place of meaning? My guest today is speaker and auther, Tony Edgell. Tony is a self-described "former bully." Tony told me he was a bully in school -- an extension of the treatment he received himself at home. Then, Tony graduated to bar fights. Still, Tony was responding to the hurt from his past. Tony was still caught by the hurt in his own life, completely disconnected from his heart. One day, Tony says he took a long look "at the man in the mirror," and realized he needed to change. Tony stopped believing the world required him to respond in angry ways. Tony found he no longer had to defend himself from threats that were never there. It was then that Tony came to understand Gandhi's famous quote, Be the change you wish to see in the world. Soon, Tony was discovering a new path for himself. Tony found himself called to help the rest of the world move from injury and hurt to growth and bravery. According to Tony, this is the path of discovering your internal hero, the hero within. Join me as Tony and I discuss the hurts of life and how they leave us limping, and how we often work from our place of hurt. But more importantly, Tony and I discuss how to work from your place of "heart." Discover your hero within, find your purpose and power, and become the person you were meant to be! Life can be overwhelming. Problems arise and can truly tap us out of resources. Sometimes, you realize that it just seems like you are stuck in a fog, not sure where to go or what to do. Or maybe you know all the things you need to do, but seem to be unable to take a step in that direction. There is a reason why this is happening, and it is buried deep in your brain. Your emotional brain is on overdrive, and is leaving you stuck in neutral. You know that feeling? You find yourself lost in the midst of life, stuck and frustrated that you are stuck. This week, we take a look at being stuck in the fog, and I have some concrete suggestions on how to get through those foggy times of life. Let me suggest 4 direct and important steps that will help you get through the fog and rediscover your clarity. Don't let the fog keep you stuck! You can move forward, in spite of it.
I know. It's a personal question. How BIG is your BUT? Oh, just to clarify, I am not talking about anatomy. I am talking about language. Words. In particular, THAT word: "BUT." We say it all the time: "Blah, blah, BUT, blah blah." or "Yes, BUT, blah, blah." Two overused and limiting uses of that one word. I am the first to admit that the word does serve a purpose, AND there are times when it is very appropriate to us it. BUT the word has the potential for keeping us stuck. It can rob us of responsibility, initiative, and potentiality. The power of the word is what happens in our mind. It negates. It may serve to negate everything you just said, or it may serve to negate everything the other person just said. Either way, it can keep you from growing and developing. DON'T let that one word keep you stuck. Join me in getting rid of "but" when it serves to limit.
We don't like to face loss and grief in our culture. Yet loss is inevitable. Unfortunately, since most people don't want to face grief, we don't always have the tools we need to deal with that inevitable moment of loss and pain. In this podcast, I take a look at grief. I name the 3 types of grief: Clean Confusing Complicated. We can feel that pain of grief when we lose: Person Potential Process Possibility But there is a way to move through grief. I outline the process in the podcast as: Remember Resolve Re-Create Re-Weave If you find yourself in the midst of grief, I hope you find this podcast helpful in your process. Grief is a universal emotion, yet feels so personal. Please listen and let me know what you think in the comments area below.
We continue to take a look at how those beliefs and thoughts get in the way of discovering your own value. That's Travis! This week, I had the great pleasure and honor of interviewing Travis Sago. If you don't know Travis, he is an internet entrepreneur and teacher. He has taught many people how to prosper through the internet. But more and more, Travis is helping people break through their barriers that keep them from building the life they want. Listen in as Travis and I discuss why people fail to see their own unique value to the world (and their path to success/life satisfaction). We note how our beliefs and thoughts (beliefs are those thoughts we keep telling ourselves) keep us stuck -- and how to get beyond that. Take a listen! You can find Travis at the MojoPreneur Facebook Page.
We all have beliefs about ourselves, other people, and the world around us. Sometimes, those beliefs help us to move forward with great success. But many times, those beliefs hold us back and keep us trapped. In last week's podcast, we talked about the stories we tell ourselves when something happens to us. This week, let's talk about those beliefs that permeate our lives. They are the recurring beliefs that can keep us stuck. Maybe you believe that people won't like you, or that people are angry with you. Perhaps you believe life isn't fair (and can even point to events that prove this). These pervasive beliefs are often very limiting and negative. They can keep us stuck, unable to grow and develop. But what if you had a model to take on these beliefs and push them aside? What if you could replace the limiting beliefs with freeing beliefs? In this week's podcast, I want to offer the 4 C's to changing your beliefs. (By the way, I discuss this method in my book, How To Save Your Marriage in 3 Simple Steps.) Let me know how you use the method in the comments area below!
For a century or so, our culture has become increasingly "psychologized." Something bad happens to you, your psyche is injured, and your option is to realize what happened to you. That is, generally, the topic of therapy: discovering the roots of your injury. In fact, perhaps on a bad day, Sigmund Freud said that the goal of therapy was to move from neurosis to common, ordinary, everyday unhappiness. Not a particularly lofty goal! This is a deficit model. More recently, the model of resilience has taught that some fortunate people can have the same injury, but manage to make it back to "normal." Somehow, the trauma does not affect them in a negative way. This is a "break even model." There are a small number of voices that have realized that every injury is truly a challenge -- an opportunity for growth. It is possible to take a hurt, pain, tragedy, challenge, or trauma, and use it as a springboard for growth. This model is the "plus model," a thriving model. Which model captures you? Can you move to (or even more into) a thriving model? Join me in this week's podcast to learn about the 3 models and how to move into a thriving model.
Regret. It keeps us locked in the past. Yet we all struggle to let it go. Why? If I had a friend that told me what I tell myself about my past short-fallings, mistakes, and missed opportunities, I would send them away. I would never speak to them again. So why do we listen to that voice that keeps reminding us of the past? Why do we stay trapped by what has happened and can't be changed? Or perhaps more importantly, what can we do to make a shift? How can we go from a life of regret to a life reset? In this podcast, I explore 5 steps to leave regret behind and make a life reset. Join me, won't you?
