#206 Designing a Happier Career in Finance: Unlocking Your Superpowers with Lucia Knight https://open.spotify.com/episode/5tlIj233qNruLyGk2rUbZA Designing a happier, more fulfilling career is a critical concern for finance professionals navigating the challenges of linear career paths and feeling stuck in mid-level roles. In this episode, Lucia Knight, a Midlife Career Design Consultant and Co-Creator of The Fierce Emporium, shares her expertise on how finance leaders can intentionally craft careers that align with their unique strengths and interests, leading to greater job satisfaction and long-term career success. Many finance professionals, despite their impressive qualifications and experience, find themselves dissatisfied with their work, with studies showing that less than 50% of their time is spent on tasks they truly enjoy. This episode explores strategies to help these individuals break free from the constraints of traditional career trajectories and design roles that energize and inspire them. Key topics covered include: Lucia's personal journey from a "career coma" in financial recruitment to retraining as an occupational psychologist and uncovering the secrets of happier work. The importance of identifying and leveraging one's "superpowers" - activities that are deeply satisfying, energizing, and unique to the individual. Strategies for uncovering these superpowers, such as the 4-piece paper exercise to reflect on past work experiences. Aligning superpowers with problems that are genuinely interesting and valuable to others, rather than just moving to a different company or sector. The significance of strategic career planning, avoiding the "shiny object syndrome," and ensuring alignment between personal values and the organization's culture. In Season 5, episode 7, we dive into designing for the widest audience possible with Sina Bahram, a computer scientist and accessibility consultant who is passionate about inclusive design. He shares his personal experience as a blind individual and his dedication to improving accessibility for all. Sina's work on inclusive design methodology has been honored by many organizations, including being named one of President Obama's Champions of Change in 2012, as well as being named one of the two inaugural Catalyst award recipients by the Themed Entertainment Association in 2022. Inclusive design, according to Sina, is about shifting the responsibility of accessibility from individuals to society as a whole. It's a game-changer that benefits everyone, just like how closed captioning is not only used by deaf people, but by people who have issues processing audio information, those who speak another language, or anyone trying to follow the news in a loud bar. Sina emphasizes the importance of considering inclusive design early in the design process. This allows accessibility solutions to be integrated in a comprehensive, seamless and efficient manner, rather than retrospectively added late in the design process in an audit-based approach. Sina's message is clear: inclusive design is essential, and it's all about embracing diversity, breaking barriers, and creating experiences that bring people together. My hope is that this conversation inspires more designers to consider inclusive access so we can welcome more and more people into the escape room community.   Show Notes, Timestamps, & Transcript Episode Sponsors Thank you to our sponsors:  Morty Morty is a free app for discovering, planning, tracking, and reviewing your escape rooms and other immersive social outings. For this episode we have invited our colleagues Isabell Britsch and Tarik Johnston to discuss all things Digital Design with us. We will touch on the importance of placing the user at the centre of things and in this context will explain the differences between service design (the overall end to end including the organisational view), user experience design (how user interact at the various touchpoints), user interface design (the design of an interface provided at a specific touchpoint). We chat about the difference between experience design (how things work) and visual design (how things look). And also why both are important in the design of products and services satisfy user needs and business goals. More so, user experience design is a vital factor in requirements analysis and iterative, collaborative solution design. In this context we will specifically argue that all software applications, even the most internal operational system, will benefit from, in fact require, user experience and visual design. As usual, in our episodes on roles we will touch on ‘what makes a good practitioner' in these disciplines, how their day to day work looks like, and how one can get into these roles… Maybe the most important takeaway is that all software teams must adjust their thinking and start including user experience and visual design into their solution design and implementation process. Isabell Britsch is a London based Design Consultant and Art Director and has a 20 year work portfolio with clients across a wide range of industries and projects in digital, print and TV. When she does not design, she teaches Yoga and Meditation. Tarik Johnston is a London based User Experience Designer with a 15 year work portfolio in designing user-centered digital applications in the public and private sector across ecommerce, banking, government, travel and property.
