Send us a textThe world is aging rapidly. People are living longer. Everyone wants their death to be calm, peaceful and reconciled - ideally at home, and in the presence of family and loved ones. End of life care, and in particular, specialised palliative care, is increasingly important and can radically enhance quality of life for both patients and their families. But how can you explain the merits of this compassionate care when in some countries, the sheer mention of the D-word is so taboo it can be interpreted as wishing ill on the very person you want to help? This is the case in parts of East and South East Asia. Many countries have reached, or will soon reach, super-aged status. That is the UN definition for a country where over 20% of its population is aged 65 or older. Singapore is projected to become a super-aged society in 2026, so extolling the virtues of palliative care in a culture that would, perhaps, rather not have the conversation about death and dying is a significant challenge. For this Art of Dying Well podcast, we speak to Dr Su Lin YEO, an Associate Professor of Communication Management at Singapore Management University. Professor Yeo has conducted ground-breaking research on palliative care communication in Singapore. We have a fascinating discussion about how cultural taboos in Asian societies about death and dying can make for difficult end-of-life conversations. We talk about how Professor Yeo's research has provided valuable insights that have improved communication strategies on this tricky subject. We also investigate how knowledge, attitude, and receptiveness can inform public health communication and advance the understanding of palliative care in Singapore.

He holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Digital Marketing and Communication Management from the Hochschule Luzern and worked for Campari Group for 4 years before starting Yamo with 2 co-founders in 2016. What differentiated yamo back in 2016 was that they sterilized baby food using pressure instead of heat, which preserved not only flavor but also the vitamins. They also tuned their recipes to contain nutrients for age-appropriate development, with no added sugar and 100% natural and organic ingredients. They initially started selling their products D2C, afraid that retail wouldn't take them in, but eventually broke into the world of Migros and Coop shelves as well. They also took advantage of influencer marketing quite early on, at a time when it wasn't so common, which allowed them to work with big name creators.Over 8 years, Yamo grew to an award-winning international multi-million organization with over 2700 points of sale in Europe's biggest retailers, and a thriving E-commerce business. However, despite the team's best efforts, they were unable to reach profitability. It was at a board meeting in April 2024 that Tobias first got the terrible news: since they had not been able to ensure the capital needed for their next step (but only accrued 2/3s of it), yamo could not continue in business. They had to declare bankruptcy and communicate the news not only to their entire team but also to their partners and stakeholders. Looking back, Tobias thinks this was when he learned what it truly means to be a leader — leadership is most important of all during the toughest times. Also in April 2024, Tobias announced the yamo shutdown on LinkedIn, after which he received an outpouring of support from both friends and strangers alike. Almost 1 year later, Tobias has come to view success as the ability to say that he has done his best creating something where before there was nothing. At last they've got it! In this complex world, CEOs are turning to their public relations leaders more than ever. They know they need someone to protect their organisation and to challenge when there are risks and issues down the track. That someone is their public relations leader who hold up a mirror so that organisations see themselves as others see them. Someone who isn't afraid to be truthful about what needs to be fixed and how to do it. These leaders are informed and bold, they ‘do' communication superbly, they are networked and influential, but most of all they keep their organisations safe. Find out how in this podcast with Professor Emeritus Anne Gregory PhD, a former Chair of the Global Alliance (GA) for Public Relations and Communication Management and a past President of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), which she led to chartered status. We talk a lot about accessibility and inclusion in higher ed, but often the focus is on traditional students and in-person learning. What actions are we taking to make online learning spaces a place where adult students feel safe to share and learn? Recent graduate of the Communication Management program, Joshua David Murphy Esqueda, who identifies as LBGTQIAS2+, discusses how their experience in the program highlighted ways online courses can allow for better representation and inclusion. Joshua and I also discuss modifications that can be made to online course delivery and the impacts of those modifications would have on all students - not just those from underrepresented identities.
Meet Jeanine Turner, Ph.D.:Jeanine Turner, Ph.D. is a Professor for the Communication, Culture, and Technology Program and an Affiliate Professor for The McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. She is the author of “Being Present: Commanding Attention at Work (and at Home) by Managing Your Social Presence.” Professor Turner received a Bachelor's in Communication Management and Masters in Organizational Communications from the University of Dayton, and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Ohio State University. Key Insights:Professor Jeanine Turner, Ph.D. is an expert on the intersection of communication and technology. What is Social Presence? Social presence is the feeling of connection when communicating with another person. This is heavily influenced by format of communication such as face-to-face conversations, email, and texting. Don't Multi-Communicate. You've heard of multi-tasking; multi-communicating is similar and people are just as bad at it. It's communicating with multiple people at the same time, such as having a face-to-face conversation while texting someone else. The best practice is to focus on one conversation at a time.Implementing Social Presence. When thinking about different communication strategies, Professor Turner recommends reflecting on who is your audience, what is the content, and what is your message. These variables will help you decide the right type of presence to engage in. This week's discussion focuses on sustainable tourism and how it links into the new Master's program that Paul Smith's College offers. My guests share the inspiration behind launching the new program and their vision for how it will support the long-term professional education of those in the travel and tourism space. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Why everyone is so excited about the new Master's program in Sustainable Tourism Management Why sustainability is a thread that's woven through many of the courses at Paul Smith's College Who the program is for, including mid-career professionals and people newly out of their undergraduate education who want to gain an environmental credential When you can apply to the new Master's program The importance of balancing out the social, economic, and environmental impacts of tourism How the current Paul Smith's College students are receiving the idea of this new program What sparked the idea and gave the team their inspiration for the new program Studying Sustainable Tourism Management What's unique about the model that Paul Smith's College has built for their brand new Sustainable Tourism Management Master's is that it is a low residency model which enables people from various backgrounds and industries to join. Professor Kelly describes the types of students that they are expecting to enroll in the new degree, from mid-career professionals interested in learning more about sustainability who may or may not currently work in the tourism sector, to entrepreneurs working in a tourist destination who are interested to learn more about sustainability, to recent graduates in the travel and tourism sector. Sustainability is a Headline Theme Sustainability is something that the current students at Paul Smith's College have in mind all the time. Professor Kelly shares more about why the upcoming generation of travel and tourism professionals is drawn to sustainability as a headline theme. Professor Paul shares his discussions with former students who are out in the workforce about their interest in returning to further study, focusing on sustainability because it is an area they see as the future but also personally important to them. One of the most significant shifts he has seen over the last 10-12 years is the genuine belief that sustainability is a necessity in every industry. Inspiration for the New Program Professor Eric discusses why Paul Smith College is launching the Sustainable Tourism Management Master's and why they feel that now is the right moment to include the new program in the offering. All three guests share their pleasure that sustainability really is a leading issue in the consciousness, psyche, and future strategy of students graduating in the last ten years. They highlight that sustainability is more than a buzzword; it's a strategy for both surviving and flourishing into the future. James Wade is a branding manager, artist development coordinator, musician, song writer & producer who was born in Georgia and gradually made his way out West to Las Vegas. Being always conscious in music, Wade began performing at local talent shows and quickly booked larger events, leading him to open for artists such as LMFAO, Mac Miller, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifia, Red and Method Man & more! With his earliest musical influences coming from country wide battle rap and influencers like Bone Thugs N'Harmony, Biggie & 2pac, James style would be considered a mix of 90s hip hop blended with trap/neo soul & alternative/gospel influence, with each project following a theme. While teaching Youth Ministry in high school & performing several sermons, Wade found a passion for leading and educating others through the power of his own words. A sports scholarship perpetuated Wade into graduating with two degrees in Communication & Management and a minor in Women's Studies. James has also served as a director for Non Profits (Mothers Raising Sons, The Equality Pact) in hopes to be a catalyst for change in the black community. His philosophy is to dedicate his life to being a LIGHT, being kind, supportive, and always pursuing ongoing development. https://www.instagram.com/iamjameswade/
