ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 12 Episode 9 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week we welcome Coach Tim Noonan to discuss his very interesting proposal to discourage cheating in junior tennis. Several years ago, Tim wrote an article (click here to read in full) with some thoughts on why junior players cheat and what we as a sport can do to put a stop to it. I came across Tim's article in an industry newsletter I get each month and immediately reached out to him to invite him on the podcast. Tim and I moved in the same circles in Atlanta. Tim is behind the very successful Universal Tennis Academy (UTA) with multiple locations in the metro Atlanta area and has played and coached tennis at every level from beginners to high-performance juniors to college to adult league players. He's seen it all when it comes to on- and off-court behavior and has felt the same frustration as the rest of us in terms of the continual cheating and lack of meaningful consequences. Please take the time after listening to this episode to also read Tim's article here and add your thoughts in the Comments section. Tim is hoping to spark conversation that will lead to significant changes and benefit the sport as a whole. To reach Tim, visit the UTA website at https://utatennis.com/. You can also email him at timnoonan@utatennis.com. If you're so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community. In this episode of the SALTovation podcast, Stacey Roberts is joined by Tim Noonan, Tax Lawyer and Partner at Hodgson Russ in New York, to discuss state and local tax issues. They talk about tax and legal issues related to private equity firms targeting certain companies and the importance of understanding where the target companies operate to determine any filing obligations. Stacey and Timothy also discuss the 2018 Wayfair case, and why tax professionals need to be knowledgeable to help clients navigate the process within state and local jurisdictions. Topics discussed in this episode:The need for expertise in transaction tax matters during big dealsWhat is the 2018 Wayfair case?Tax implications of private equity and hedge fund transactions What You Will Learn:2:10 State and Local Tax Considerations for Private Equity Firms8:07 Understanding Nexus and State Tax Implications for Business Transactions11:54 Residency Rules and Tax Audits in Different StatesQuotables:“State tax issues and private equity deals are an underrated issue. You and I think it's the most important issue because that's what we do every day. But we've gotten called in on both sides of these deals where someone's getting acquired and they haven't collected sales taxes in many years. We have to clean that up and figure out if your sales are taxable in this many states. We clean that up through voluntary disclosure.”- Timothy Noonan [04:22]“With the Wayfair case in 2018, you now have all these sellers who might not be watching what happens at the Supreme Court level and don't realize that every state has come out and said if you have a certain amount of sales in the state, which isn't very high threshold, you should be collecting sales tax in 46 different states and thousands of local taxing jurisdictions. So that can be messy.”- Timothy Noonan [07:11]“The rules in most states are either similar or the same. Someone leaving Colorado has the same residency test as someone leaving New York. There's a domicile test. California's rule is a little bit different, but they all sort of sound like the same concepts of this domicile test. So in that sense, the rules are the same.”- Timothy Noonan [12:02]“A lot of wealth creation that happens for folks in the private equity world is through pieces of their target companies they acquire and then they sell again. It is carried interest. It is the piece of these companies that are treated as capital gain. It's intangible. So in addition to that capital gain benefit of carried interest, it has an important effect on state taxes too.“- Timothy Noonan [16:34]

In his work leading the Missouri Veterans Commission, Tim Noonan serves in a volunteer capacity. But in the year 2020, the job has proved to be a particularly intense one — and in recent weeks it’s been filled with tragedy. The seven long-term care facilities the commission oversees suffered "a prolonged and rapidly escalating outbreak of COVID-19" beginning in September, according to a recent summary of an independent investigation.

Extreme initiation rites of passage & growth I was first introduced to Tim and his work via his TV show ‘Boy to Man’ back when it initially aired in Australia 2016. A show in which he travelled to 12 extremely remote locations to spend time with people still living in their traditional ways and partake in a series of coming of age boy to manhood rituals. I remember being captivated by the first ad I saw on TV, for two reasons; one. I am deeply curious about rites of passage rituals and the journey from boy to man. At the time, this was something I was looking into more and becoming increasingly aware of via its glaringly impactful absence in most modern society and culture. I still am, for what it’s worth. And two, I love me some adventure into strange and wonderful places, which is something this show has by the bucket load. Oh and three, at the time I was beginning a deep dive into a historical novel series based on the life of Ghengis Khan and his descendants, so with an episode going to Mongolia and taming a wild eagle - I was hooked before it even began. The show didn’t disappoint. With wild adventures, remarkable rituals and captivating situations that Tim got himself in, it was something I tuned in fr every week. Not long after I reached out to Tim about having him speak at a Beyond The Beers event of mine on his adventures and what he learnt going through all of these coming of ages rituals. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make the timing work. So when I started getting a list of people I want to speak to for this podcast, I knew Tim ahd to be on the list. And today, we bring you that conversation. In this Episode: Since that show, Tim has also gone through another series of initiations, believe it or not. The first being another show with his fiancee PJ called ‘Extreme Engagement’ (now airing on Netflix globally) in which they, wait for it… set out to travel the world to remote occasions and villages to partake in ceremonies and challenges designed to test a couple before they commit to each other for life. Yeah, Tim has a thing. He has also gone through an initiation like no other, one I am extremely familiar with myself right now - fatherhood. So in this episode, we touch on these rituals,s what he experienced, the things he went through, what he learnt, what he saw in the other participants, especially the young men doing the coming of age rituals with him. We cover some of the most challenging moments he has faced, and the invariable ‘death’ that needs to occur in these rites of passage so that the new man can arise from the ashes, as it were, and become a mature, integrated, and valuable member of the community. Integral to all of these adventures and experiences was the fact that he was the film crew - he was capturing all the footage and capturing it in a way that would make not only a great TV show, but each adventure had to be a complete episode. He took one friend with him to run the sound and any filming he couldn’t do. That was it. An extra level to all of this, something we touch on in this podcast episode as well. Given all of the adventures Tim has been on, we could easily talk about it for hours. The stories alone are endless. However, I didn’t want this episode to simply be him telling outrageous epic stories, I wanted to get into the experiences and learn from him so we can all learn from him. So, we cover a bit of everything in this one. I trust you will get something from this conversation. Please share it with someone you think would enjoy, benefit from, and potentially be lovingly challenged by its content. As always, if you have questions out of it - ask me. Every 10 or 15 years a new warrior class will be initiated into the tribe. Boys between the ages of 10 and 20 are brought together from all across the country. Dozens of houses are built that will serve as the place of initiation. The night before the ceremony, the boys sleep outside in the forest. At dawn, they return to the little makeshift homestead for a day of singing and dancing. They drink a mixture of milk, cow’s blood, and alcohol and eat piles and piles of meat. After the festivities, boys who are of age (12-16) are ready to be circumcised. The Emuratare is the most important ceremony in the life of a Maasai boy. Once circumcised, the tribe will consider him a man, warrior, and protector of his village. As the young man makes his way to where the elders will circumcise him, friends and family members will taunt the boy by saying things like “If you flinch, we will disown you.” The Maasai value bravery in their warriors and the circumcision is a boy’s first way to prove his courage even in the face of severe pain. It takes about 3 months for the circumcision to heal and during that time the young men wear black clothing and live in huts built by the women of the villiage. The Maasai boy is now warrior. For the next 10 years the young men live together in an Emanyatta, or warriors camp. There they learn fighting, oratory, and animal husbandry. After 10 years, the young men take part in the Eunoto ceremony that marks the transition from warrior to senior warrior. After a Maasai has passed through the Eunoto, he can marry. The ceremony is basically several days of festivals, which ends with the initiate’s mother shaving his hair.LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znq3DipBXPEAlan Watts (Philosopher): Tao of Philosophy (Alan Watts Love Of Wisdom)The Tao of Philosophy is a literary adaptation of talks selected to introduce the new “Love of Wisdom” series by Alan Watts to today's audiences. The chapters provide rich examples of the way in which the philosophy of the Tao is as contemporary today as it was when it flourished in China thousands of years ago.Perhaps most significantly, these selections offer modern society a clearer understanding of what it will take for a successful reintegration of humans in nature.LINK: Tao of Philosophy (Alan Watts Love Of Wisdom)Jon Jones (UFC Champion): “All my butterflies are aligned'“When you have butterflies and you’re feeling anxious and you have anxiety or are nervous, that’s when you’re most powerful… A lot of people, instead of honing this power and using it, they allow it to just consume them.
