He trains dogs for a living and wonders if, like different breeds of dog, we simply have different body types? Marnie Chesterton comes up with some answers, talking to doctors about how the BMI is used and misused in clinical practice, and looks at some alternative methods for measuring our body composition. She also sits down with philosopher Kate Manne to discuss the realities of living in a fat-phobic world. We hear from Tonga in the South Pacific, where high BMI scores have labelled the country highly obese. But this is not necessarily how Tongans see themselves. And Marnie finds out if the BMI will continue to be used across the world as an important health marker or whether it is destined for the scrap heap of medical history. David Fa‘avae joins this episode bringing with him his experience as a Tongan/Sāmoan with ties to Niue, and as a founder of the early Tongan scholars network, a Senior Research Fellow at Waipapa Taumata Rau (University of Auckland), and Senior Lecturer at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato (University of Waikato). Ata and I discuss with Dave some of his intellectual background that seeks to respond to community needs, as well as some of his research interests with intergenerationality, education, and developing critical depth in the terms and concepts we use. Dave shares the positive and important aspects of intergenerational relationships that can alleviate tensions and provide worthwhile wisdom and practices that provide grounded pathways for future generations. We discuss challenges in dominant institutions of schooling as well as their legacies, and the significance of education. We consider Epeli Hau‘ofa's scholarship and the importance of engaging with messy intellectual terrains, facing a greater complexity that requires multiple lenses, while also upholding Indigenous relational ethics, which are also critically confronting external and internal power dynamics.   Terms: Hohoko 'a e To'utangata (inter-generationality, intergenerational and genealogical consciousness); Loto Tonga (in Tonga, the center of Tonga, term that refers to Tongans positioned in the Kingdom of Tonga); Tu'a Tonga (outside of Tonga, the periphery of Tonga, term that refers to Tongans positioned outside of the Kingdom of Tonga in NZ, AUS, US, etc.); Mokopuna (grandchild); Tauhi Vā/Tauhi Vaha‘a (Mediating relationships, upholding kinship/clan and socio-spatial points of relation); Mamahi‘i Me‘a (passion and devotion – both Tauhi Vā and Mamahi‘i Me‘a are among the Faa‘i kaveikoula ‘a e Tonga or Four golden pillars of Tongan culture and society as emphasized by HRH Queen Sālote Tupou III); ‘Eiki Mokopuna (chiefly grandchild or chiefly grandchildren, a unique intergenerational relationship); Tapu (protections, restrictions, commonly considered as ‘sacred-ness'); Ha‘a (lineage, clan); Vā (relation, point between/of relation/connection); Mānava (to breathe, give life); Manava (womb); Mana (potency, honour, prestige); Whakapapa (platformed layers of connection, origin, genealogy); Si‘ota‘aki (harmful criticism, harmfully taking apart another's views or stories); Si‘o (to see or perspective); Ta‘aki (to unpack or take apart); Si‘o-Ta‘aki (reconceptualized as “to deconstruct perspectives, reveal underlying causes, and change understandings”); Post-humanism (a field of studies that looks beyond the human or anthropocentrism/humancentrism, may also confront the assumed universals or presumed hierarchy of humanity and/or the concept of the human); Hoa (partner/companion in both lea faka-Tonga and te reo Māori), Hoa-Haere (close friend, partner, or comrade in te reo Māori), Hoariri (enemy/antagonist in te reo Māori, comprised of partner/companion and anger, sometimes interpreted as angry friend).

This week, McKay talks about aspects of the culture effect, including creating culture, maintaining it, and how to rescue it. He opens up with a story detailing Tonga's devastating volcanic eruption and how the Tongan culture, which values respect and open-mindedness, helped the people weather the storm. McKay notes that, when teams or families have a strong culture, they will thrive and prosper, but, on the other hand, when culture is weak, it can destroy your team and everything you're working for.  McKay also emphasizes that, as leaders, we have the opportunity to influence and shape the culture that drives us, and goes on to share that, to do so, we must learn to value feedback. So, make sure that you are slow to speak and quick to listen when it comes to creating a culture and values. Likewise, an influential leader will lead by example, sharing and modeling the values by which they hope their team will abide. McKay draws this episode to a close with one final piece of advice: be careful who you let join your team. All it takes is one person to totally alter your culture, so protect it and you will protect your team as well. The Finer Details of This Episode: Tonga's devastating volcanic eruption The fall of IBM Defining culture Influencing culture The importance of feedback Sharing and modeling values Why mid level managers create culture Quotes: "Tongans look out for each other and respect others. Many Tongans may avoid outward signs of wealth or affection. They dress in modest ways, and they're highly receptive to other people's opinion and behavior.” “Culture can guide a team, lead a company to thrive and prosper, or culture can, like toxic ash, choke a team and cause companies to fail, or fall.” “Most leaders don't understand culture and they don't know how to diagnose or influence it.” “Culture can help teams be more agile, loyal and effective… Culture can also be a significant liability when it's misaligned with your strategy or values. And it doesn't matter how dysfunctional your culture may be on your team today, you can improve it with a plan and intentional effort.” “So, like the researchers in Roseto, you may have to set up camp for a while on your team, maybe even in your family - watch, listen, and observe. See if you can uncover some of the cultural behaviors and assumptions that your team members have.” “You see, some leaders stopped showing up for the small things. And the result? Their people do the same. What you do duplicates, so if you want to change the culture on your team, model the behavior.” “Hire and recruit people who exemplify what culture you're trying to create. And over time, these managers will influence your entire team. So be very selective about the people you let influence your team.” “Listen, learn, and determine where your culture is today to define the mission and values that will underpin your future culture.” Links:  https://www.mckaychristensen.org/ (Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen)

Manu grew up on a small island in Tonga, a small nation in itself, in a time where they had no electricity or technologies that we would take for granted today, like TV or cars. Later he would move to the main island to attend high school and start playing rugby, a sport that is dear to the hearts of many Tongans. But his rugby ability would prove to be an asset later, when as a 25-year old he moved to Tasmania and rugby proved an outlet to make friends, build his networks and connect with others in the small Pacific Islander community in Tasmania. Manu now works in the community care sector, assisting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and according to Manu, caring for others in the community is very much a part of the Tongan ethos, where family is central to community life. But getting to where he is now has been a rough road at times and he talks about discrimination, trouble with the law, losing his job and turning things around through education and how his upbringing instilled his with the qualities of adaptability and resilience.

All people deserve to be seen and heard. Those who are not often feel invisible, from their cultural heritage to their material circumstances and societal contributions. This reality led a group of young Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in 2009 to found Empowering Pacific Islander Communities (EPIC) a nonprofit dedicated to advancing social justice for Native Hawaiians, Chamorros (indigenous people of the Mariana Islands), Samoans, Tongans, Marshallese, and Fijians who call Washington, California, Utah, and Arkansas home. EPICS's executive director Tavae Samuelu leads with deep respect for the lived experience and wisdom of her elders and with an explicitly pro Black and indigenous framework. EPIC connects NHPIs with policy makers to call for data disaggregation, which has identified disproportionate gaps in access to education, health, and immigration services. It also illuminates the devastating and under-reported impacts of the pandemic on Pacific Islanders. EPIC's community leaders begin each meeting, even at the White House, with stories, their personal and most compelling data. As a result, Pacific Islanders are being seen and heard by government at all levels and policy makers are starting to prioritize their needs.

Myanmar this week marked one year since its democratically-elected government was overthrown by a coup. The generals who took over have promised to restore democracy, “once the emergency is over.” However, protestors calling for democracy have been arrested and beaten, while the army stands accused of murdering more than a thousand civilians, in its efforts to quash opposition to military rule. Jonathan Head has spoken to some of those still resisting the junta. In the year since Myanmar's military coup, three countries in West Africa have also suffered the same fate: Mali, Guinea, and most recently, Burkina Faso. The coup leaders there have explained that they took over because the government was failing to tackle Islamist militants. Henry Wilkins tried to report on what was going on, but found himself arrested at gunpoint. When a volcano erupted off the Pacific Island of Tonga, it triggered a tsunami and covered the island in ash. It also cut the underwater cable which connects Tonga to the outside world, meaning no phone-calls or internet were possible. This was a particular cause of concern for Tongans abroad, anxious to know about the welfare of friends and family. They turned to a small online broadcaster, operating from the outskirts of Brisbane, Australia. Simon Atkinson paid it a visit. US special forces this week raided the home of Islamic State's leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi. It appears he then blew himself up, along with members of his family. This was only a month since al-Qurayshi was held responsible for Islamic State's attack on a prison in Syria, where members of the group were held. The resulting battle went on for more than a week, and Shelly Kittleson has managed to hear from some of those who witnessed it. Yalda Hakim was six months old, when her family fled Afghanistan. Going back there recently, she found dramatic changes since her last visit. Under Taliban rule, there have been widespread reports of Taliban soldiers carrying out summary executions. And when she spoke to women determined to maintain their role in the workplace and wider society, she found their efforts were proving dangerous, and potentially fatal.
