Hi and welcome to bl podcast Alibaba's UC browser has been removed from Chinese app stores for failing Consumers...? Why? Here's all you need to know Alibaba's UC Browser was removed from China's largest app stores after state-backed broadcaster CCTV listed the popular mobile browser along with other services for failing consumers. Government-run China Central Television included UC browser among a number of brands it accused of flouting consumer rights in its annual name-and-shame program for March 15, World Consumer Rights Day. App stores run by Huawei Technologies Co. and Xiaomi Corp. were among the local app stores that've since pulled the app, though Apple Inc. continues to offer UCWeb for iOS users. The broadcaster also went after everything from Nissan Motor Co.-owned Infiniti's customer service to face-recognition software failings. This report by state-backed broadcaster CCTV came at a time for Alibaba Group Holding which is grappling with intensifying government scrutiny over its growing influence in the internet and media spheres, with uncertain outcomes. Back in February, Alibaba had beaten quarterly revenue estimates with core commerce revenue rising 38 per cent to a record high of 195.54 billion yuan in the quarter, powered by the company's China retail marketplaces as the economy rebounded from the Covid-19 crisis. In January, Alibaba and Ant co-founder Jack Ma has resurfaced after months out of public view, quashing intense speculation about the plight of the billionaire grappling with escalating scrutiny over his internet empire. Jack Ma had kept out of public view since early November 2020, when Chinese regulators torpedoed Ant's $35-billion IPO, tightened fintech regulations, then ordered an overhaul of Ant and launched a separate antitrust probe into Alibaba — all in a span of days. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/business-line/message

Millions of Indian gamers are trying to win their last “chicken dinner”, as the hugely popular PUBG now shares the same fate as TikTok. This online multiplayer game that had many Indians hooked, is now banned along with 117 other China-based apps. This is the second time that the Ministry of Information and Technology has banned more China-based apps in the country. In the first round of banning that happened earlier on 29 June, TikTok was one of the wildly popular apps that went down with 59 other apps like Cam Scanner, UC Browser and ShareIT. The IT Ministry's press release says that the now banned apps “are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”. If that sounds familiar, it's because these concerns bear a close resemblance with the reasonings of "security concerns" that came with the TikTok ban. And speaking of similarities, the timing of the ban has not gone unnoticed either. As was with TikTok and the 59 other apps, the PUBG ban also comes at a time when Indo-China tensions have been flaring up at Ladakh all over again. Should we see this ban as India's response to Chinese aggression? What is the impact of this move? Welcome to East West Hurricane! 🌪We update you on the most essential news from Asia in tech, media, and business—the things you need to know that you probably haven’t heard in Western media.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram! ⚡️Jack Ma, Founder of Alibaba, Summoned to Indian Court 👩⚖️A former Indian employee of Chinese company UC Browser has filed a lawsuit against Alibaba, UC Browser’s parent company. He claims that he was wrongfully fired after bringing up issues of censorship and fake news on the company’s apps. The employee, Pushpandra Singh Parmar, alleges that UC Browser censored content unfavorable to China and promoted fake news that caused “social and political turmoil.” As a result, an Indian court has summoned Alibaba and specifically founder Jack Ma to appear before an Indian judge.UC Browser is a web browser that was the second most popular browser in India with over 130 million users. The Indian government banned UC Browser last month, along with 58 other Chinese mobile apps. The allegations made by the employee will add to the current political tensions between the two countries. While Jack Ma was the face of Alibaba for many years, he has been retired since 2018. At this point, summoning him to court is more a symbolic gesture.Burberry + Tencent Launch World’s First ‘Social Retail’ Store in China 🧣Luxury fashion brand Burberry has worked with Chinese tech giant Tencent to launch what they are calling the world’s first ‘social retail’ store in Shenzhen, China. What makes this store unique? Every single product has an associated QR code you can scan with your mobile phone to learn more information about the product. When you enter the store, there’s an interactive window that mimics a runway and displays a shape resembling your body movement. Pretty much every element of the store is interactive, doubles as a social space, or is part art-installation. If you use Burberry’s WeChat mini-program, you can unlock exclusive content and receive personalised offers. This includes a type of Burberry special ‘social currency,’ a kind of next generation rewards program. The store delivers an exciting new way to look at physical + digital retail innovation in China. By testing this new concept, Burberry and Tencent should learn a lot about what works or what doesn’t work in the future of retail.Bilibili’s Push for Exclusive League of Legends Rights 🥇League of Legends (LoL) is one of the biggest e-sports on the globe. The 2019 LoL World Championship drew 100 million viewers and the 2020 World Championship is still scheduled to take place in Shanghai in September. Riot Games, the developer behind League of Legends, just announced a three-year deal granting the exclusive streaming rights of LoL events to Chinese video platform Bilibili. Bilibili is one of these Chinese Youtube-ish equivalents, but it has the youngest audience out of all the major video platforms and is focused on the Anime-Comics-Gaming (ACG) sub-culture. In a press release, Bilibili COO Carly Lee said that the number of views of esports videos on Bilibili reached 44 Billion in 2019.This is a really big move for Bilibili. It’s the equivalent of getting exclusive rights to broadcast the Super Bowl of E-Sports. In traditional sports, these rights deals are usually the most lucrative revenue for a league and the rights are usually granted for multiple years. With these rights, Bilibili is also creating more content around League of Legends like documentaries and other commentary videos. There are plenty of other ways they can monetise these rights. If there’s an industry that is growing, it’s E-sports. By buying the exclusive rights now, Bilibili is making a shrewd bet on what’s the fastest growing sports industry. This is a public episode. Catch the latest news of 30/06/2020 **Queensland will open its borders to all jurisdictions except Victoria. // **The Indian Government has blocked 59 apps with Chinese links that included the hugely popular TikTok, WeChat and UC Browser.
The Indian markets are set to open in the green today, as indicated by the SGX Nifty which was trading 70 points up at 10,320 levels at 7 AM. This comes on the back of an overnight rally in the Wall Street where stocks closed higher as the sentiment boost from upbeat US housing data outweighed the threat of rising Covid-19 infections. The Dow Jones rose 2.3 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 1.47 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.2 per cent. Asian markets followed Wall Street’s firm lead. Australian ASX 200 index rose 1.6 per cent while Japan’s Nikkei gained 1.8 per cent. In oil markets, Brent crude contracts rose 1.68 per cent to $41.71 a barrel. The Indian government yesterday banned 59 Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, UC Browser and others amid rising tensions between India and China after the Galwan Valley clashes. The govt said it has received credible inputs of Chinese apps posing a threat to sovereignity of India. Meanwhile, Indian and Chinese militaries will hold the third round of talks today in an attempt to de-escalate tension in eastern Ladakh. Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 4 PM today. He is also likely to speak on the 'unlock 2' phase announced yesterday which will come into effect from July 1. The government issued the guidelines yesterday in which it further eased the restrictions imposed due to the lockdown. Domestic flights and train services, already allowed, would be further expanded in a calibrated manner while night curfew has also been relaxed. Investors will hence keenly monitor all these developments today for market direction. Meanwhile, India once again recorded over 19,000 cases in 24 hours, taking the total number of Covid-19 cases to 5.67 lakh. The death toll in the country due to the virus now stands at 16,904. Bharat Biotech’s Covid vaccine candidate Covaxin is set to undergo human clinical trials in July after getting the green light from the Drug Controller General of India. On the results front, Tata Steel reported a consolidated loss of Rs 3,406 crore in the March quarter, on the back of weak revenue and a slew of exceptional items, which further dented earnings of the company. A total of 596 companies including Vodafone Idea, ONGC, and Sail are scheduled to announce their March quarter earnings today. And, now, some other top news. Sources tell Business Standard that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has begun stepping up activity opposite Arunachal Pradesh as well. The PLA troops are reinforcing their posts in large numbers, increasing their patrolling, and stepping up violations of the Indian border. Telecom stocks might trade actively in today's session after the Trai released mobile subscriber data for the month of February. Reliance Jio added a whopping 6.25 million users and Vodafone Idea lost 3.5 million users during the month. HDFC Bank is seeking to raise Rs 50,000 crore through the issuance of additional tier-I and tier-II bonds. Further, it plans to acquire home loans worth Rs 28,000 crore from promoter HDFC, in FY21. And, finally, the Sebi has granted more time to the auditor which is looking into the dealings of six schemes shut down by Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund. The audit firm was to complete the investigation by the first week of July, but has now been allowed to submit its finding by end July or first week of August. Read by Kanishka Gupta
Apple and Google seem to be responding to the government's ban of 59 Chinese apps yesterday. Bytedance owned apps -- TikTok and Helo -- have disappeared from the App Store and Google Play. They could have delisted themselves voluntarily too, and not all apps in the government's list have been taken off yet. Popular apps like AliBaba Group's UC Browser and UC News, Bigo Technologies' Likee, Xiaomi's Mi community, Tencent owned WeChat, and e-commerce platforms Club Factory and Shein can still be found on the platforms. From a standoff at the LAC, the geopolitical conflict between India and China has found a new turf: technology. While Chinese troops continue to camp in the Galwan valley, the Indian government announced a ban on 59 Chinese-owned apps, including the hugely popular TikTok, UC Browser, WeChat and Cam Scanner.Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in his tweet said that ban was enforced for the “safety, security, defence, sovereignty and integrity of India and to protect data and privacy” of Indians. But at a time when the boycott China pitch has been getting heightened, even though the statement itself doesn't name China, this move is widely being interpreted as a response to the stand-off along the LAC.Some reports are calling it India's “digital air strike,” but what is the impact of this move? Is it a security move or a political one? Are there violations of legal procedures in this order? Welcome to East West Hurricane! 🌪We update you on the most essential news from Asia in tech, media, and business—the things you need to know that you probably haven’t heard in Western media.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram! ⚡️Indian Government Bans 59 Chinese Mobile Apps 🚫 The Indian government announced yesterday that it has banned 59 Chinese Mobile Apps, citing concerns that the apps engaged in activity “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.” There are also allegations that these apps, such as TikTok, are sharing Indian user data with the Chinese government, which has been publicly denied by the companies. This comes against the backdrop of military skirmishes between India and China earlier this month in a disputed Himalayan border, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian troops. Prior to this ban, there were many calls to boycott Chinese goods and stop Chinese imports, which will have a huge effect on the $90 Billion in bilateral trade between the two countries each year.Among the affected apps — two of the most notable are TikTok and WeChat. India is TikTok’s largest market outside of China and it’s estimated that there are over 120 Million Indian TikTok users. Is this the death of TikTok India? While there are many people in India who support the ban, the combined users of these total apps is around 300 Million. And these people could be using apps for pure entertainment (Clash of Kings, Helo, TikTok) or business reasons (ShareIT, WeChat, UC Browser). Depending on how long this ban lasts, there’s now a major opportunity for local Indian companies to take advantage of the ban and provide domestic alternatives.Korean Fund Set Up to Promote Local Media 🇰🇷The Korean government has announced the creation of a new 1 trillion won (USD $825 Million) fund to invest in local media companies. There are also plans to decrease regulation in order to allow local media tech startups to compete with players like Netflix and Youtube. This also comes on top of several government investments in private sector infrastructure, such as an announcement earlier this year of $15 Billion in new infrastructure funds. A trend I believe we will start seeing more is the decentralisation of popular culture, away from the dominance of Hollywood throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Korea already punches above its weight when it comes to global cultural influence, but could we start seeing a renaissance in Korean pop culture? Korea arguably had the most advanced professional gaming industry earlier than any other country. K-pop has taken over the world over the last few years. In February of this year, Korean film Parasite became the very first foreign language film to win the Best Picture Oscar. And K-Dramas have been dominating Asia for years. What’s next for Korea?Chinese K.O.L.s vs. Western Influencers 📊Daxue Consulting wrote an article comparing Chinese influencers (KOLs - Key Opinion Leaders) with Western Influencers. It was a fascinating look at the similarities and differences between the Eastern and Western worlds of social media and influence. The biggest tool Chinese influencers use differently to monetise is livestreaming, which is the number one focus for KOLs like Austin Li and Viya. For Li and Viya, their livestreams can average up to $250,000 USD in revenue per minute over the course of a several hour long livestream. In one case study, they focus on comparing Jeffree Star (one of the biggest American beauty influencers) and Austin Li (one of the biggest Chinese beauty influencers). Jeffree Star’s annual income is estimated to be $100 Million and Austin Li’s is estimated to be $140 Million. Jeffree Star is notable for having own brand of cosmetics and products, a model more common in America, while Li does not have his own ‘vertical business line’ and instead uses his influence to market products from other brands.

Valeri Karpov is a maintainer on Mongoose, has started a few companies, and works for a company called Booster Fuels. Today’s topic debugging with Async/Await. The panel talks about some of the challenges of debugging with Async. AJ, however, has never encountered the same problems, so he shares his debugging method. Valeri differentiates between .catch vs try...catch, and talks about why he prefers .catch. There are two ways to handle all errors in an async function without leading to an unhandled promise rejection. The first is to wrap the entire body of the async function in a try...catch, has some limitations. Calling an async function always returns a promise, so the other approach is calling .catch on the promise to handle any errors that occur in that function body. One of the key differences is if you return a promise within an async function, and that return promise is wrapped in a try...catch, the catch block won’t get called if that promise is rejected, whereas if you call .catch on the promise that the function returns, you’ll actually catch that error. There are rare instances where this can get tricky and unintuitive, such as where you have to call new promise and have resolve and reject, and you can get unexpected behavior. The panel discusses Valeri’s current favorite JS interview question, which is, “Given a stream, implement a function called ‘stream to promise’ that, given a stream, returns a promise that resolves to the concatenation of all the data chunks emitted by the stream, or rejects if the stream emits an error event.” It’s really simple to get this qustion right, and really simple to get it wrong, and the difference can be catastrophic. AJ cautions listeners to never use the data event except in the cases Val was talking about, only use the readable event. The conversation turns to the function of a readable event. Since data always pushes data, when you get a readable event, it’s up to you to call read inside the function handler, and then you get back a chunk of data, call read again and again until the read returns null. When you use readable, you are in control and you avoid piling functions into RAM. In addition, the right function will return true or false to let you know if the buffer is full or not. This is a way to mix imperative style into a stream. The next discussion topics are the differences between imperative style and reactive style and how a waits and promises work in a normal four loop. A wait suspends the execution of a function until the promise is resolved. Does a wait actually stop the loop or is it just transpiling like a promise and it doesn’t stop the loop. AJ wrote a module called Batch Async to be not as greedy as promise.all but not as limited as other options. The JavaScript panelists talk about different async iterators they’ve used, such as Babel. They discuss the merits of Babel, especially since baseline Android phones (which a significant portion of the population of the world uses) run UC Browser that doesn’t support Babel, and so a significant chunk of the population of the world. On the other hand, if you want to target a large audience, you need to use Babel. Since frameworks in general don’t handle async very well, the panel discusses ways to mitigate this. They talk about different frameworks like Vue, React, and Express and how they support async functions. They discuss why there is no way for you to actually cancel an async option in an actual case, how complex canceling is, and what you are really trying to solve for in the cancellation process. Canceling something is a complex problem. Valeri talks about his one case where he had a specific bug that required non-generic engineering to solve, and cancelling actually solved something. When AJ has come across cancellation issues, it’s very specific to that use case. The rest of the panelists talk about their experiences with having to cancel something. Finally, they talk about their experience with async generator functions. A generator is a function that lets you enter into the function later. This makes sense for very large or long running data sets, but when you have a bounded items, don’t complicate your code this way. When an async generator function yields, you explicitly need to call next in order for it to pick up again. If you don’t call ‘next’, it’s essentially cancelled. Remember that object.keys and object.values are your friends.
