Relationships can without doubt prove difficult when not managed properly. We often take for granted obvious signs our relationships are troubled. I share in this podcast some truly serious relationship red flags that should not be left without resolution,
Malicious gossip is not pleasant. It is aimed at putting people down. This is worse if people gossip against your partner or spouse. Join me as I discuss and suggest ways to handle situations like that.
In this episode, I share my thoughts on what informs our life choices and the subsequent consequences.
In this episode, I discuss the current pandemic, question current practices and share what radical lifestyle changes my family and I have had to make. I am hoping you too might learn a thing or two from when you have listened in. Keep safe.
My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man, who unlike so many people really started creating his dream as soon as he could. He left school at 16, with no network and no idea what he would do. He just knew he couldn't keep going through the motions anymore. Even though it was extremely scary, he had to forge his own path, to start living the life that he wanted, on his own terms. As he says "I've always been a believer in doing what you love and building life on your terms. And since leaving school at 16, I've been doing that with my life. Since then, I've done two programs with Seth Godin, played in professional poker tournaments, traveled through 10 countries in 2 years, and started a marketing agency in Singapore with clients such as Wacoal Singapore and QuickBooks Asia. Now, I host PassionBlueprint, where I share the stories of people who have taken the step out to do what they love - to inspire and help others do the same. It seems as if our guest has 100% the same belief as your friendly neighbourhood UK Podcaster, who sees a world that is just going through the motions And why should you do that, when you have the ability connect with people across the world that you have have never had before. You have the use of technology at your fingerprints more powerful than we have ever had before? And we have more people showing us the way to build a life of your dreams, if you only decide on what you want to do! Well lets ask some questions then, such as.... Why at the age of 16 did he feel that he had been coasting, when I would suggest that the world is expected to coast at that age, and just stumble into a job, any job? And now he has done it, does he see an easier path that he could have taken, or was the work ethic required to really get where he wanted to be? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Derrick Kwa
The Changeability Podcast past and future We celebrate 100 episodes as we take a look at the Changeability Podcast past and future. Here’s some of the top 3s from the past 99 episodes followed by a look at the next episode in the Changeability Podcast story. Audience top 3 episodes The 3 favourite episodes of our audience to date. These are the shows with the highest number of downloads so far. The longer the episode’s been on iTunes or our BrilliantLivingHQ.com website or Stitcher or TuneIn the longer people have had to listen to it, so we would expect the older shows to have more downloads than newer ones and that’s reflected in these results. Third most popular episode - ‘What is Mind Management’ Episode 6 In episode 6 of the Changeability Podcast we were thinking about our strap line phrase – ‘Mind Management’. What is mind management and what’s in it for you? In episode 6 you found out about: Kathryn and Julian’s acting skills (you’ve been warned) How many thoughts you have in a day Why sports people love mind management How thoughts have energy How you are not thoughts How mind management needs training Mind management can improve your personal and professional life Second most popular episode - ‘The Brilliant You’ Episode 2 Do you know how truly amazing you are? Well that’s what episode 2 is all about. You might not always feel like a magnificent being, but by the end of this second episode you be agreeing with us that you’re pretty smart. Because in this show we talk about just how brilliant you and your marvellous mind and what it means. What you’re doing as you listen to the episode (really?) How you’re like an iceberg and why that’s a good thing. How many things we can focus on at a time What Julian learnt from a Memory World Champion (or rather - didn’t learn!) The role of the conscious and unconscious brain and how they manage our minds. Understanding a few basics about how your mind works, will help you understand what’s getting in the way of doing what you want and what to do about it. Most popular episode - ‘Changeability – The Start’ Episode 1 The first episode saw us introducing ourselves and the Changeability show. The Changeability podcast is for you if you’re interested in changing or improving something in your life or business, big or small. It’s for people like us who’re interested in finding ways to make our lives the best they can be – so we can be more successful (whatever that means to you), happy and fulfilled. Through discussion and interviews we look at practical mind management and change techniques, tactics & tools - taken from the worlds of personal development, psychology, neuroscience, business, sport, entertainment and spirituality – to empower and inspire a happier, successful life or business. In the first episode you find out: What is Changeability? And why should you care about it? Why is change hard? How we can self-sabotage our best intentions Why it’s not your fault - and why it’s good. Our story and what we’ve learnt Top 3 countries We love you being here wherever you’re from – so this isn’t our favourite countries – but rather the top 3 countries with the highest number of listeners out of the 167 countries we currently have listeners in. Third – UAE 6% Second – USA 19% First – UK 48% (And just in cast you’re interested the fourth is Australia with India in fifth place.) Kathryn and Julian’s favourites This was so hard to choose, especially as we decided not to include any interviews in our top 3s (maybe they’re deserving of a separate post) – but here’s three each with a couple of extras thrown in for good measure. Kathryn’s favourites Episode 3 – The Library in your brain Episode 19 - Why use affirmations to manage your mind? Episode 31 – 5 mind management techniques for changing your life. Julian’s favourites Episode 43 – What is mindfulness and why you need it? Episode 46 - 21 simple tips for mindfulness meditation. Episode 56 What is happiness and the neuroscience behind it Couple of extras Episode 85 How to recognise toxic people and relationships Episode 89 What does success mean to you 3 of our favourite reviews on iTunes Very hard to pick 3 out of the 78 we have so far across the different iTunes countries as we obviously love them all. So we can’t really call these our favourites but they are reviews we’ve especially like. Excellent - iimmmii from United Kingdom One of the best ‘change your life’ resources I’ve come across. If you like to understand the theory and evidence (be it scientific or anecdotal) behind advice on how to change your life, this material is presented in an engaging way in this podcast. Of course they also make recommendations for how best to go about taking action. A few episodes in and you will feel like you’ve made two new friends who are supporting you on your journey of change. Well done Kathryn and Julian, listening to you makes me proud to be from the same Sceptred Isle! A Homely Serving Up of Sound Advice/Wisdom - Ola-B. from United Kingdom Where has this amazing couple been all my life?! :) Love Kathryn, love Julian, and let's not forget Dude!!! Love this podcast - the topics, the delivery of it all...it's simply unique, uplifting and inspiring! Thank you guys! Kathryn and Julian's chemistry rocks! - LornaLi from United States I love the concept of this show! It's so unique and refreshing! I absolutely LOVE the hosts' chemistry - their exchanges are such a joy to listen to. Thank you for all the useful tips you provide to your listeners on how to plan and achieve their goals, I'm sure many are reaping so many benefits from this show! Thank you to you for taking the effort and making our day. By the way – we’d love more reviews. We don’t always ask for them in every episode as it gets tedious for you to listen to – and we want to provide you with a good listening experience. However, reviews are important to us not only because it’s great to find out what you think but it means iTunes makes our show more visible to people looking for podcasts. You know yourself the power of reviews on sites like Tripadvisor and Amazon – so if you feel like helping us out that’s one way to do it. Dude’s top 3 Who’s been with us all through every single episode and every phase of the podcasting process – in fact he’s always with us – Dude the Dog, our faithful hound and black labradoodle. We’ve joked we have a contractual obligation to mention him in every show – not that we’ve quite done that but he’s had more than his fair share of mentions and even made it onto the show on a few occasions. So here’s Dude’s top 3 favourite Changeability Podcast moments as chosen by him (woof). Episode 83 ‘Self-love Rituals’ – The 10th of our self-love rituals is to have Pet Time. Walk, cuddle, play with or groom your dog or cat or talk to your budgerigar. You might not get this if you don’t have a pet – but if you do have one you’ll know what we mean! Episode 63 ‘How to start and finish anything with Tom Boother’ – Dude features in a cameo role when Tom starts talking about Dude and how they met! Episode 98 ‘What are habits and why we need them’ – Dude gets his own moment in the spotlight. You’ll have to listen to this episode to know what we mean, or just listen to episode 100 to hear the extract. Our top 3 bloomers You wont know what we’re talking about here if you’ve never listened right to the end of our shows – but listen to episode 100 to hear 3 of them for your entertainment – and why they’re called Kathryn’s bloomers! 3 lessons we’ve learned from creating 100 episodes of the Changeability Podcast Here’s just 3 of the many things we’ve learned from creating 100 episodes of this podcast over the past two years, and they’re all relevant to you. You can’t always measure your impact Sometimes it’s hard to measure your impact – this goes for measuring the success of a podcast or many things. How do you measure your success or the impact you have? On the whole people don’t tell you and it’s not always possible to make a connection e.g. between who’s listened to the podcast and who’s visited the website or bought an Affirmation or audio mind management tool or a course like our ‘Beginner’s guide to mindfulness meditation’. That’s not to say there aren’t any clues. Ways of gauging if we’re having a positive impact include comments in our FB group or page and reviews on Stitcher or iTunes. Plus nomination for national / international podcast awards – being a finalist for the New Media Europe Audience Appreciation Award and winner of the UK Podcaster’s Best Self Help Podcast Award. But the truth of it is that for the thousands of our podcast listeners each month, for the most part it’s hard know the difference, if any, it makes to them. Does that matter? Yes and no. Yes because from a resource and business perspective it’s helpful to have a handle on the impact but also no because sometimes it’s not just possible to know but that doesn’t make it any less valuable. This is an important lesson for us all because you don’t always know the impact of what you do in your work, relationships and everyday life – but that in itself doesn’t mean you should stop what you do. Stickability and focus Creating 100 episodes of a podcast, especially one like this, is an achievement. This is an important lesson for us and maybe also you as well. When we do something consistently and with focus it creates results. We may not know the full impact of those results but there are some clear results for us. 100 episodes of a podcast are out there in the world being listened to in 167 countries. 100 blog posts which are the show notes on this website. Winners of a national podcast award and finalists for another. All of which is the result of focus and stickability – week by week. And now we have this body of work that is out there in the world whatever happens in the future – no-one can take that away from us. This goes for you as well – what is it you want to achieve? A new skill, producing something, writing a book, starting your own podcast, setting up a business. Whatever it is clarity, consistency, stickability and focus is the key. Review evaluate and change The third lesson for us has been learning the importance of reviewing and evaluating what you’re doing. We’ve been doing just that with our podcast as 100 seems a good point to do so. We’ve been looking back on the experience of the past two years, learning from it and making changes. This is something we advocate for you too. It’s about being deliberate about what you do rather than just carrying on doing the same thing because that’s what you do or what people expect of you. It might be a matter of fine-tuning and pivot or of big changes. For us it’s meant reviewing our experience, going right back to why we started Brilliant Living HQ in the first place. In fact going back further than that to why we wanted to make the big change in leaving our previous careers. Sometimes it’s good to remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. One of the things we always said was that we wanted more control over our time and to spend time doing what we want to do, and more time for ourselves. We know that time is a resource, even our most precious resource. So to put these two things together we’ve been looking at how we spend our time and efforts, in effect the resources we put into the podcast – that’s the review bit. Next came the evaluation. Is the balance right? This is a challenging one for us because we love doing the podcast, which means it’s always high on our list of priorities, together with the schedule we set ourselves and the way we create our show. Review, evaluate and make changes in the light of your experience to make sure you’re always taking control of your own path. That’s what we’ve done – and to see what changing we come to the future. The future The result of our thinking about what we’ve done and what we want to do is that we love the podcast and you the listeners, so we’re going to continue with it but take a break over the summer for a few weeks. We’re taking this short break for an exciting reason, because when we return at the beginning of September we’ll have the Changeability Success Club. We’re taking the next few weeks to get this exciting club ready for you. We’re ordering the carpets and curtains, mowing the lawn, changing the beds, only joking, it’s an online club to take the things we talk about on the Changeability podcast and make them a reality in your life. With everything you could want and need to help you make changes in your life alongside a great community of people like you to support each other. More on that very soon, but for now we wanted to let you know it’s coming. We’re putting a lot of love and time into creating what we believe will be the best online club for you to become a member of. We’ve been working on it behind the scenes for a while now and now we want to put a special effort into the final push to get it ready for opening the doors. We’ve been making videos and templates and downloadable tools including special audio tools to help you not only get clear about what you want but also give you the tools and support to make it happen – all within our special membership club for those of you who join us. So we’re taking the next few weeks to get it ready for you and when we come back it will be here. We’ll have one hundred places ready – it’s going to be really special and we can’t wait to share it with you. So exciting! What to do next Subscribe to the podcast so you’re notified when the next episode goes live and you wont miss it. Get on our email list if you’re not on it already. “ The show must go on.” It’s only right and fitting Izabela Russell is the first Podcast Diva stepping into the spotlight; not only is Isabella part of the podcasting scene in the UK but also part of my podcast journey. Izabela Russell is host of Analysing Brands – Branding Cow and co-host of the Audio Production Show from Music Radio Creative, a company producing jingles, intros and voiceovers where Izabela is a director alongside husband Mike Russell.Izabela is also the co-founder of UK PodcastersandManaging Director and co-founder of the New Media Europe conference, and co-host of the New Media Europe Show podcast. Episode 2 As you can tell from this description, podcasting is now a huge part of Izabela’s life and business but it wasn’t always like that. In episode 2 Izabela talks about how she went from banking to podcasting and much more including: How Izabela was dragged into podcasting. How long it took to record her first session. Finding her inner voice and broadcasting it on a podcast. The unusual podcast experiment Izabela and Mike undertook. Split testing podcast subjects, lessons learned and the results. From 1 podcast to 5 and back to 1. Outsourcing a podcast and the post production process Work flow. Podcasting as part of a lifestyle choice. Why you should have a website. Going against the status quo. UK Podcasters and New Media Europe “I was terrified! My mic technique was totally not there… I used to feel stressed…but now it’s just a conversation.” Top tips “A podcast is about getting to know the real you….It’s quite difficult to find the real you…Do not lose patience it will eventually come out”. Do not be afraid to ask. Don’t let the process put you off starting – you can always outsource it. Don’t be a Diva-In-Waiting any longer! “Things I know can be done by someone else – I will happily and easily outsource.” #1 recommendation for Divas-in-waiting Get a plan of action, set a date and be accountable for it. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Thus wrote Aristotle and whether you agree with his ancient Greek wisdom or not, honest self-reflection and review is a powerful and underused tool for success and change. Yes it’s hard, yes it’s scary, yes it might seem like a bit of pain – but evaluating your progress might just be the difference between learning from your experience and repeating your mistakes. How do you know what you’re doing is effective unless you measure and evaluate it. In episode 52 of the Changeability Podcast we explore the importance of evaluation. How we do it and what we’re evaluating. Mike Russell, co-founder of the UK Podcasters community, appeared on Isle of Wight local radio station Vectis Radio to chat with Kelvin Currie about our forthcoming Isle of Wight Podcasting Meetup.
[ NOTE: Please note that my isn't perfect in this episode due to a recent studio move, so apologies about that! It will get better again for future episodes :) ] Mike Russell is founder of Music Radio Creative – an audio-on-demand service based on the Isle of Wight. He’s also putting together a brand new event called New Media Europe, to be held in Manchester in September of this year. Today on Digital Marketing Radio we discuss whether or not going to face-to-face events can build your digital authority, with topics including: To build your digital authority fast, do you think that you have to attend face-to-face industry events? What’s your main reasoning behind hosting live events? Over the past year or so, you moved from producing a UK Podcasters event to a New Media event. What was your thought process being the brand shift? What are some of the main challenges you've faced in organising your own events? You've got some top speakers at New Media Europe. I've had some top interviewees on Digital Marketing Radio. But it’s one thing for me to get half an hour of someone’s time, compared with asking for a few days of someone’s time and flying then half-way around the world. How do you persuade people to speak at your event? If someone’s listening to this, and they want to put on their own event, what are a few of the essential steps that they need to go through? [Tweet ""Blogging sets up a tone but podcasting helps get people to know, like and trust you." @imikerussell"] Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? Adobe Edition [Audio editing software] Adobe Creative Cloud [Adobe software suite] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Analytics SEO [SEO software platform] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses? Start a podcast. If you're not, get on Google Hangouts. Get closer to your audience. Make a connection. The topic about this episode is all about 1-to-1 connections and meeting in person and that magic that happens when you actually meet someone - so get as close as you can to your audience. Blogging sets up a tone but podcasting helps get people to know, like and trust you. And if you can do video - I've already steered away from video for so long - and even my Adobe Edition tutorials that I have, for ages, if you watch the initial ones you will see that they are just Screenflow - there's none of me on it. And it was actually Ray Ortega who gave me this tip - he's a fantastic audio and video podcaster in the United States - he just said to me one day, "Mike, why don't you just flick on your web cam and have your face up there while you're going an Adobe tutorial." And I did. And that was the turning point for me, connecting with my audience. Because they were like - "Oh, that's Mike!"
Today I talk about David Letterman and what we can learn from his retirement. We also talk a little Podcast Movement (use the coupon sop to save at podcastmovement.com). Some people are NOT going to Podcast Movement because they invited Glenn Beck. How cool is it to be so hated that people will bite of their nose to spite their face? Because of My Podcast I'm Reconnecting With My Brothers Daniel Herrick creates the five lights podcast. 5lightspodcast.com Due to his podcast he is connecting with his brothers. Last 5 in 5 What were the last five podcasts you listened to? (from Daniel Herrick) Flat out Fever Podcast (formula 1) On the Limit Podcast (formula 1) UK Podcasters (podcast conference) Judge 13 Podcast (F1 podcast) Around the NFL (NFL Podcast) School of Podcasting (Podcast about podcasting) Punch You In The Face T-shirts I had dinner with Ryan K Parker of Foodcraftmen.com who is now famous for his line "No one will punch you in the face" (about your podcast schedule). He had said people had told him to put it on a shirt. So he did. I ordered mine. How about you? Orders are printed and shipped when the time expires (May 31st). You can expect your package to arrive around 7 days after printing starts. Domestic orders are mailed via first-class or priority mail (USPS). Shipping costs $3.99 for the first item and $2.00 for each additional item. If you want to make your own shirt, Ryan is using TeeSpring. I spoke about TeeSpring on the More Podcast Money show. New Businesses Pop Up Around Podcasting We have seen people jump into the podcasting world to help podcasters. We are seeing people who will create your shows for around $50 a show, and now there are people who will help you make a media kit. Hank at http://www.channelhank.com is creating a single page media kit for $25. I am talking with Hank about getting a coupon code (I'll keep you posted) Ben Kruger has a service for small businesses where all you do is record the content and they do everything else. The cost is $697 a month. The Show Notes Guy charges $200/month for a 30 minute weekly show. Podcasting Press will assemble your weekly show for $97 a month. There are new classes, courses, coming out on a daily (almost hourly) basis. Be sure to check the About page. In some cases, there isn't one (just a form to give your email address). Earn Commissions Directing People to the School of Podcasting With so many people coming into podcasting, you may be thinking of launching a course on podcasting yourself. Let me tell you its a lot of work. You need a lot of passion. Here is what you have to look forward to. Recreating videos every time a new update comes out. Helping people retrieve their password again One word: Paypal Phone calls from people who are blind to the idea of time zones (if you supply a phone number). The joy of working with computers (meaning it works on my computer, but for some reason not on yours...) You can earn recurring income by partnering with the School of Podcasting. When you refer a person to the School of Podcasting and they join you earn commission for every month they stay subscribed. JVZOO - One of the Top of the Line Affiliate Management Tools I recently switched to JVZOO as my affiliate tool. They put a few steps into becoming an affiliate (including having a code sent to your phone). This ensures that you are a real person (and not a bot). I want real people, with a real understanding of podcasting to promote the website. Here is a video that show how to sign up at JVZOO. UPDATE: I've moved to http://www.podcastingaffiliatescom Spotify Embraces Podcasting This is good news for the future. Right now Spotify is doing a very limited beta. According to The Feed podcast, This is only the initial launch, available to about 1% of Spotify customers in only a few countries. While we are all enjoying the good news, I know some are bummed that its not a wide open door to entry into Spotify. I understand this point, but I also understand that there are a lot of podcasters, and that is a big door. By limiting the amount of podcasters, Spotify can ensure that their system can handle the traffic. Spotify will be handling the bandwidth. This does mean you will need to check your stats in multiple places. If you are using Libsyn, there will be a special section to check your stats. Spotify is a growth opportunity. Will they run advertising on my show? Probably. I don't care. My show points people to my website. A website that helps me get more consulting and members for my website. You can share any of my free material anywhere you want, as long as you point back to the School of Podcasting. In the same way that I didn't mind Stitcher and iHeart Media spreading my message, I don't have a problem being on the Spotify platform. Spotify Facts The average listener on spotify listens 148 minutes every day We're the talk of the town. Our listeners share tracks, artists, albums and playlists. 2/3 of that sharing extends beyond Spotify, spreading out into social networks. Our mobile audience has grown dramatically in the last year. So more people take us more places. And you have more ways to reach them Paying subscribers: Over 15 million Active users: Over 60 million* Ratio of paying subscribers to active free users: Over 20% Revenue paid to rights holders since launch: $2bn Number of songs: Over 30 million Number of songs added per day: Over 20,000 Number of playlists: Over 1.5 billion created so far Available in 58 markets – Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK, Uruguay and USA. Lessons Learned From David Letterman I remember growing up and hearing my older brother talk about David Letterman. This was when he came on at 12:30 in the morning after Johnny Carson. Later when I moved into my brother's house, we would stay up late and watch (I worked 1-9 at a grocery store). It was a fun time, and a special time with my brother. When I watched the last Letterman show, I watched a chapter of my life close and realized I would never see it again (except for reruns). While Letterman will always point to other people, it was the adlibs from his desk that made me laugh. Here are some interesting (to me ) stats. Letterman facts In the 1970's Letterman was a weatherman in He received some attention for his unpredictable on-air behavior, which included congratulating a tropical storm for being upgraded to a hurricane and predicting hail stones "the size of canned hams." That line is classic Letterman. His first show was in 1980 and won two Emmys, but failed in the ratings and was cancelled in October 1980. NBC kept him under contract and then in 1982 his Late Night with David Letterman show was launched. He did things like mounted cameras to his dog, a monkey, a rail over the audience. He once used a bullhorn to interrupt a live interview on The Today Show, announcing that he was the NBC News president while not wearing any pants. His show moved to CBS in 1993. The bad news his show wasn't just like his old one and it was geared to be just like his old show. Letterman eschewed his trademark blazer with khaki pants and white wrestling shoes wardrobe combination in favor of expensive shoes, tailored suits and light-colored socks. The monologue was lengthened. Paul Shaffer and the "World's Most Dangerous Band" followed Letterman to CBS, but they added a brass section and were rebranded the "CBS Orchestra" as a short monologue and a small band were mandated by Carson while Letterman occupied the 12:30 slot. Additionally, because of intellectual property disagreements, Letterman was unable to import many of his Late Night segments verbatim,[59] but he sidestepped this problem by simply renaming them (the "Top Ten List" became the "Late Show Top Ten", "Viewer Mail" became the "CBS Mailbag", etc.) The Late Show lost nearly half its audience during its competition with Jay Leno. In 2000 Letterman had quintuple bypass surgery and had to step away from the show an allow others to guest-host. In interviews on Howard Stern, I've heard it mentioned that he was more personal to work with (where before it sounded as if he was a tyrant to work for). The final episode of The Late Show with David Letterman was watched by 13.76 million viewers. In it Letterman spent most of his final talk to thanking his staff. What Can Podcasters Learn From David Letterman? He was humble. He didn't handle compliments well. His irrelevance for the "Same ol' Same ol" made him stand out. Nobody else was make a suit of velco. We all watched and thought, "I can't believe he is doing this on network television." If it ain't broke don't fix it. I knew when I tuned in to hear the World's most dangerous band and found the CBS orchestra that we were in trouble. If you provide good content consistently, you become part of people's routines. People don't like to interrupt their routine. Comparing yourself to others is not a great use of your time. BE YOU. Its all about relationships. When you provide good content, people will go to bat for you. The Foo Fighters cancelled a South American tour to be on Dave's first show coming back from surgery. That cost them money, but that act got them called back again, and again. The last time in front of 13.8 million people. They provided the soundtrack to the last minutes of his show. When Howard Stern was on, he complained to Letterman that Dave had been talking with Jay Leno (Dave and Jay go way back). Why lose a friend because of entertainment shows? Move on, and apparently he did. For a guy that did some pretty immature stunts, that a pretty mature gesture. Thanks Dave. Ready to Start Podcasting? The step of every journey starts with a single step. You've gone to great lengths to make a good episode. Now you're ready to promote your show, and everyone says "find your audience," but how? Today I do a couple quick Google searches and show you what I came up with for a friend who has a podcast that is a book of fiction (super niche). We also talk about dealing with "trolls" who leave negative comments on your blog posts, etc. If you are thinking about speaking at New Media Expo, you need to get your submission in BEFORE 10/24. I give some tips on what I'm looking for at my blog. Interview With an Internet Troll [3:40] There will be people who hate everything you do. They have nothing nice to say, and in some cases will use very offensive words. But keep in mind: 1. They don't have the courage to do what you do (create content). They only tell you how bad your content is. 2. Many times they do it in an anonymous fashion (again, lack of courage). 3. They DID leave a comment. You MOVED someone to hate you. That's a plus. It doesn't seem like a plus, but it is. Check out Daniel J Lewis's episode on handling complaints. Check out Erik K. Johnson's Podast Talent Coach. Ray Ortega's Podaster's Studio and Podcaster's Rountable (which often has myself and Daniel J Lewis) Last 5 in 5 [10:50] Todd from the conformity hazard podcast (recorded live at Podcast Movement) tells us the last 5 podcasts he listened to. 48 Days to the Work you love (Dan Miller) School of Podcasting Podcast Answer Man Family From the Heart (audio journal of the host) Smart Passive Income (Pat Flynn). Podcast Rewind [12:38] UK Podcasters are now New Media Europe. Thanks to Kevin Cox for the shout out. I appeared on the Profitcast Podcast. This is a cool show that talks about growing your audience and monetizing your show. Brian is an awesome dude. How Do I Grow My Audience When I'm Not Doing an Interview Show? [16:15] I got an email from Caine Door who asked, " "what kind of advice would you give to someone who's podcast was driven by fiction content (a bit like Scott Sigler but with no where near such an outgoing personality) and not interviews, or helping people, or a professional focus? It seems that a lot of advice about podcasting is more geared toward all of those things that I mentioned above that I don't really do. My latest episode has the most conversation I've done with the audience....ever and its only like seven minutes. " My first bit of advice was to get his website address into his signature. Don't make it hard to find your show. I am the person who may not read all of your email, but I will click a link to help me determine if I should read all of your email. Then do the four steps of podcast promotion 1. Figure out who the audience is 2. Make content that will impact and move them. 3. GO to where they are and make friends with them. Bring value with every conversation. 4. Tell them about your podcast So Caine's audience would be people looking for fiction. I typed in phrases like "Fiction Book Fans" and "Fiction Book Clubs" and I went to Google+ communities and Facebook Groups, and between a few(less than 5 searches) I had a list of places to investigate including. http://themindofafictionbooklover.tumblr.com/me is in the top 5 of Google for this search. Go read his blog, and leave comments. When somethng strikes you send him an email and start a conversation. Later ask him if he'd like to listen to your book. Be sure to have your signature with a link to your website so when you send him an email he will see your website. http://www.thrall.org/booklovers/ Has all sorts of things about book clubs http://www.booktalk.org/online-reading-group.html This is a huge forum (be careful not to spam here and read the rules of posting) Here is another search results for Google Groups https://plus.google.com/s/fiction%20books/communities Be Careful in the Forums The reason you have to do step three (make friends with your potential audience) is if you just show up and go "LISTEN TO MY PODCAST" people who ask, "Who is this person?' Then they will flag your for spam. I know because in 2006 this happened to me. It takes time. It's hard to do (because you know THIS is MY AUDIENCE) but be patient. Kevin Costner is the Anti-Christ In the movie Field of Dreams Kevin Costner says that "If you build it they will come." This is a GIANT LIE. You need to GO and find your audience. Will having a podcast being people to your site? Yes, but if you want to grow your audience faster you have to go find your audience and lead them to your show. How Do You Define Your Success In my book More Podcast Money, I talk about how Jeremy and Jason from Internet Business Mastery had more influence than people with email lists that were huge. Jason and Jeremy had more influence. Your success may not be measured in numbers. Get Your Podcast Reviewed If you have a podcast and want some unbiased feedback check out getting a podcast review.
