When you're thinking about what to make for dinner, do you consider cow tongue, liver or kidneys? Probably not- but these cuts are highly sought after in other countries. Dean Meyer, Past chair of the us meat export federation explains how they're working to create new market opportunities for Wisconsin agriculture. “At USMEF, we don't key in one country,” explains Dean Meyer, Past chair of the US Meat Export Federation. “With 19 offices around the world and a presence in 80 countries, we're flexible. We can swiftly redirect products to alternative markets when necessary due to factors like inflationary issues and currency fluctuations.” With cattle numbers being low, Meyer says their strategy lies in the diversification of meat products, particularly focusing on underutilized cuts and variety meat. “By adding value to cuts such as tongues, livers, and kidneys, USMEF opens doors to markets like Japan and Mexico. So we aren't taking away from the US consumer, but instead we're adding value to the cuts that we don't consume here.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation recently led a trade delegation in Japan. Japan is an important market for U.S. pork
International trade can be a “gold mine” for beef and pork producers as well as the grain growers they rely on for feed. However, U.S. red meat exports are challenged from lower domestic production and the rising value of the U.S. dollar. In this week's Open Mic in-depth interview, Philip Seng, President and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation, says the value, quality and consistency of the US product has helped the industry maintain and expand its place in the globe – despite tough competition from places like Australia and the European Union. Seng says over the next decade Asia will be home to 65 percent of the world's middle class and that's another reason to concentrate on global trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership.Agri-Pulse staffPhilip Seng, Pres. and CEO USMEF
