Lyn welcomes Dr. Becky Whetstone, a marriage and family therapist, to discuss the challenging topic of what to do when a spouse wants out of the marriage/ relationship. Dr. Whetstone shares her personal journey through marital struggles and the insights she gained from her experiences, emphasising the importance of getting help to heal any issues and stabilise emotions during a marriage crisis. KEY TAKEAWAYS In a marriage crisis, one partner (the decider) may want to leave while the other (the leaning in partner) wants to stay and fight for the relationship. This creates a runner-chaser dynamic that can exacerbate tensions. Before making any decisions about the future of the marriage/ relationship, it's crucial to stabilise emotions and calm the nervous system. This allows for more rational discussions and helps both partners access their true feelings. Implementing a period of no contact can be beneficial. This space allows the decider to reflect on their feelings and the relationship without the pressure of the leaning in partner's attempts to reconnect. During separation, the leaning in partner should put the love and focus entirely on themselves by doing things that they love and that make them happy. This time can be used for self help, to address any stress/ anxiety/ personal issues/ and prepare for a healthier future. Engaging with a therapist can provide essential support during a marriage crisis. Professional guidance can help individuals navigate their emotions, heal past/ current issues, and make informed healthier decisions about their relationship. BEST MOMENTS "If someone says, 'I think I want out of my marriage...' all sorts of crazy feelings, thoughts, and things are going to happen. People can flip back and change their mind numerous times." "The harder the leaning in partner chases, the more activated and intense the decider will want to get away." "If you could just... be kind when your person says they want to leave... I think probably I'd have 80% more reconciliations than I currently do." "Even when you think there's no hope, hope. I've seen everything... it's just so important how you conduct yourself during the process." Angela welcomes Dr Shai Tubali, an expert on chakras, to discuss his unique approach to understanding these energy centres within the body. Shai elaborates on the concept of chakras, explaining their role in connecting our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves, and how they influence our overall well-being. He also introduces the idea of chakra personality types, focussing on how our experiences and past influences shape our energy flow. KEY TAKEAWAYS Chakras are energy centres within the subtle body that influence our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There are generally seven main chakras, each associated with different aspects of our lives. Chakras are not fully developed at birth; they evolve through life experiences and lessons. The root chakra, located at the base of the spine, is the first to develop and is crucial for feelings of safety and stability. Each individual may have a dominant chakra that influences their personality and life themes. Understanding one's chakra personality can help in recognising emotional patterns and areas for growth. Techniques such as "chakra flowering" and "expansion" can help balance and open chakras. These practices involve visualisation and somatic awareness to enhance the flow of life force energy. BEST MOMENTS "Chakras are like intersections, connecting the many different levels of our being... they mediate within our being, helping us to bridge these different languages." "When we are born, chakras are not truly fully developed... they start as initial life lessons... going through our chakras is just like going through the school of life." "The heart chakra is a lot about self-love too... it's about how we are also in relationship, in managing the first relationship, which is the relationship with ourselves." "The beauty of chakras is that they're always related to our life themes as we live them... they begin to speak to us because they're so directly related to parts of our body." Lucinda is joined by Rob Lion, from Black River Performance Management to discuss the critical elements of fostering intrinsic motivation and performance in the workplace. Rob, a full-time professor and expert in human resource development, emphasises the importance of understanding human behaviour, the psychological factors that influence motivation, and introduces the "CAR" model, which focuses on competency, autonomy, and relatedness as key drivers of intrinsic motivation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Effective performance management requires a deep understanding of human behaviour and motivation. Organisations often fail to implement sustainable solutions because they overlook the psychological aspects of employee engagement. High-quality intrinsic motivation is driven by three key elements: competency (the ability to perform tasks effectively), autonomy (the independence to make choices in work), and relatedness (the sense of connection with others). Addressing these needs can enhance employee motivation and performance. Miscommunication and differing interpretations of terms like "motivation" and "engagement" can hinder organisational effectiveness. It's crucial to establish a common language and understanding among team members to foster better communication and collaboration. Organisational culture will develop either intentionally (by design) or unintentionally (by default). Leaders must actively cultivate a positive culture that supports intrinsic motivation and employee well-being to ensure long-term success. BEST MOMENTS "Work should fuel the human spirit and not drain it, focusing on performance but not at the expense of the employee experience." "The secret of high performance in people is that we might have the best process, but if people haven't bought into it, humans make things fail." "High quality, intrinsic motivation requires three different elements: competency, autonomy, and relatedness." "It's easier for me to tell you, you need to get this done, as opposed to having a conversation that moves us into this alignment category." Angela presents the second of a two part conversation with Dr Gregory Kelly, in which they discuss the intriguing topic of senescent cells, often referred to as "zombie cells." These cells accumulate with age, resist apoptosis, and contribute to inflammation, negatively impacting overall health and vitality. Dr. Kelly explains the mechanisms behind cellular senescence and introduces the concept of senolytics—compounds designed to help clear these dysfunctional cells from the body KEY TAKEAWAYS Senescent cells, often referred to as "zombie cells," resist apoptosis (cell death) and accumulate with aging. They do not contribute to bodily functions and instead release inflammatory compounds that can lead to various age-related health issues. Senolytic compounds are designed to help clear out senescent cells from the body. By periodically taking these compounds, individuals can promote cellular health and potentially improve energy levels, joint comfort, and overall vitality. The process of using senolytics can be likened to pruning yellow leaves from a plant. Just as removing unhealthy leaves allows for new growth, clearing out senescent cells can help rejuvenate tissues and promote healthier cellular function. It is suggested that individuals start considering senolytics around the age of 40, especially if they have experienced significant stress or health issues. Younger individuals may not need to use them as frequently, while older adults may benefit more from regular use. BEST MOMENTS "Senescent cells resist cell death, are unrepairable, and secrete inflammatory compounds, contributing to aging and various health issues." "If exercise was a pill, everyone would take it because it stimulates autophagy and helps slow the accumulation of senescent cells." "Senolytics are compounds that can finally get a senescent cell to change its mind and go through this falling off process." "If we want a different result than our parents or grandparents, we have to start doing more and start doing it younger." Responsible acquisition of AI has emerged as a pivotal piece of this puzzle—especially as governments and organizations seek to build public trust in AI-driven solutions. In this episode, Punit Bhatia speaks with Dr. Carrie Miller, an expert in AI procurement and ethics, to explore how recent guidance from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget encourages federal agencies to acquire AI responsibly. Angela is joined by Dr Morgan Nolte, a geriatric physical therapist, to explore the critical topic of insulin resistance and its widespread impact on health. Dr Nolte shares her journey from traditional physical therapy to focusing on disease prevention, emphasising the importance of understanding insulin's role in blood sugar regulation. She also delves into the differences between insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes, highlighting the often-overlooked significance of fasting insulin levels KEY TAKEAWAYS Insulin resistance is a condition where the body's cells become less sensitive to insulin, leading to higher insulin levels and eventually resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. It is a precursor to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, affecting a significant portion of the adult population. Regularly checking fasting insulin levels is crucial, as it can indicate insulin resistance long before blood sugar levels rise. A fasting insulin level below six is considered optimal, and awareness of this can help individuals take proactive steps toward lifestyle changes. To improve insulin sensitivity, a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein and healthy fats is recommended. Focus on whole foods, limit high-sugar fruits, and ensure adequate protein intake (30-40 grams per meal) to support muscle growth and metabolic health. Strength training and regular physical activity are essential for improving insulin sensitivity. Engaging in moderate to high-intensity strength training at least twice a week, along with walking after meals, can significantly help regulate blood sugar levels. BEST MOMENTS "Insulin is a hormone made in your pancreas and it has several vital roles in the body, but the one that we're focusing on today is blood sugar regulation." "88% of adults, at least in America, have some degree of insulin resistance, even if they don't have full-blown prediabetes or type 2 diabetes." "I think the fewer the spikes, the better. Realistically, how we eat in our culture today is purely a matter of commerce and the benefits of being able to ship food." "When stress is up, a few things happen. Number one is your cortisol goes up. Cortisol is one of your stress hormones." Angela welcomes Dr. Peter Martone, an expert in sleep biomechanics, to discuss the critical impact of sleep positioning on overall health and well-being. Dr. Martone shares insights on how proper spinal alignment during sleep can enhance restorative sleep, improve heart rate variability (HRV), and regulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is essential for reducing stress and promoting recovery. The conversation delves into the concept of the "triune of sleep," emphasising the importance of alignment, subconscious safety, and conscious relaxation techniques MAIN TAKEAWAYS The Sleep Triune: Alignment, Safety, and Subconscious Control: Dr Martone presents the Sleep Triune, explaining that true sleep quality starts with proper alignment. If the body is misaligned during sleep, it leads to subconscious pain, causing tossing and turning throughout the night. Corrective Sleep Positioning for Spinal Health: The ideal sleep position is lying on the back with arms at the side, legs straight, and a pillow under the neck (not the head). This position supports the natural cervical curve and prevents long-term structural problems. Sleep Avatars: Personalising Sleep Based on Subconscious Patterns: Dr Martone categorises sleepers into three avatars—Armadillo, Gorilla, and Ostrich—based on their subconscious sleep habits. Understanding your sleep type can help tailor strategies to improve both sleep quality and overall health. Optimising the Vagus Nerve for Better Health: Misalignment in the cervical spine can compress the vagus nerve, leading to a range of issues, from poor digestion and immune system dysfunction to anxiety and depression. Aligning the neck properly during sleep can enhance vagus nerve function and improve parasympathetic tone. Breathing Techniques to Calm the Mind: Focusing on long exhalations rather than inhalations helps calm the mind and body. Dr Martone recommends a simple technique: breathe in slowly, let the breath out even more slowly, and pause before inhaling again. TIMESTAMPS & KEY TOPICS 00:01 – Introduction to Dr Peter Martone and the role of sleep positioning in health. 01:41 – The Sleep Triune: Why proper alignment is crucial for sleep and health. 06:51 – Corrective sleeping position: Back sleep with pillow under the neck, not the head. 13:15 – Understanding the three sleep avatars: Armadillo, Gorilla, and Ostrich. 21:07 – Impact of vagus nerve compression on parasympathetic function. 33:49 – Strategies to calm the subconscious: Pressure points and breathing techniques. 37:42 – Importance of exhaling for falling asleep: A simple breathing exercise. 41:28 – Customising sleep strategies based on sleep avatars. 42:42 – How sleep posture impacts your ability to create the reality you want. 45:15 – Call to Action: Take the Animal Sleep Avatar Quiz at DoctorSleepRight.com. Plugged In - The Official Podcast for JSerra Catholic High School
According to Dr. Peter Kilpatrick, Catholic Education is distinct not only in that it offers classes in theology or “religion.” Integration of the curricular and co-curricular is the true hallmark of Catholicism. That means that in Catholic schools – and especially Catholic universities – the goal should be much more than skills building for a future profession and even more than character formation. The ultimate purpose of Catholic education is to guide students into a deeper recognition and understanding of God's revelation of the true, good, and beautiful across all disciplines and in every arena of human life. Dr. Kilpatrick articulates this and discloses the unique way that the Catholic University of America executes on this noble educational venture. ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Peter K. Kilpatrick was appointed president of The Catholic University of America in March 2022 and took office on July 1, 2022. His prior roles are numerous. He served as provost and senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Illinois Institute of Technology and previously as professor and McCloskey Dean of Engineering for ten years at the University of Notre Dame. He launched Notre Dame's first joint Ph.D. program with the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, later expanding to programs with universities in Brazil and Hungary. Dr. Kilpatrick also served on the faculty of North Carolina State University in chemical engineering for 24 years, from 1983 to 2007, the last eight-plus years as the department head. Dr. Kilpatrick also served as the founding director of the North Carolina Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center. He is the author of more than 100 refereed journal articles in the areas of colloid and interfacial science, emulsion science, and molecular self assembly, particularly as they apply to energy and to bioseparations. His work has been cited more than 5,300 times and he holds or shares 12 patents. He received his A.B. in chemistry from Occidental College (summa cum laude) in 1978 and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1983. He and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of four adult children.

Get 50% off your Brain Map at Peak Brain with code ANGELA at www.peakbraininstitute.com In the first of a two-part conversation, Angela talks to Dr Andrew Hill, a brain mapping expert, to explore the intricacies of brain mapping and its implications for optimising mental performance and overall well-being. They discuss the science behind brain waves, the importance of sleep quality, and how various lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise timing, can influence cognitive function. Andrew shares insights on the significance of deep sleep, the role of nutrition in brain health, and the effectiveness of sleep trackers, while debunking common myths about circadian rhythms and light exposure. KEY TAKEAWAYS Brain mapping involves measuring the brain's resting resources using EEG to analyse brainwave patterns. It helps identify tendencies related to attention, stress, sleep, and cognitive processing, rather than specific thoughts or feelings. Quality of sleep is crucial for cognitive function and overall health. Poor sleep can lead to issues like memory difficulties and cognitive decline, but improvements in sleep quality can lead to quick recovery in brain function. Eating patterns significantly influence circadian rhythms. Fasting before bed and timing meals appropriately can enhance sleep quality and metabolic health. Morning activity in a fasted state is also beneficial for regulating circadian rhythms. While sleep trackers can provide insights into sleep duration and patterns, they may not accurately measure the quality of deep sleep or REM sleep. Self-reporting on sleep quality can be just as effective as using these devices. BEST MOMENTS "Brain mapping is measuring the patterns, the resting resources in your brain... it's mostly picking up how you tend to be. The resources in terms of their general way of being." "If you have a habit of eating before bed, you're going to chronically be under-rested because you're not getting into deep sleep." "I think humans are ultimately quite adaptable... people that think they're night owls are people that have dysregulated circadian rhythms." "The most sophisticated sleep trackers are no more accurate than self-report after a month of self-report." For this special REPLAY episode, Angela welcomes back Dr Neil Paulvin back to the show, to talk about the latest in longevity science and transformational therapies - including biohacks such as spermidine, how to reverse our biological age, NAD and peptides - as well as much, much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Women need progesterone and oestrogen for muscle building and brain health, cognition, energy and more. Recent research has suggested that delaying menopause may work to serve health in these terms. The key to longevity and long term health lies in the "Core 4" - sleep, exercise, diet and stress management. Circadian rhythm in particular can markedly affect the immune system. For women in their forties, the decade in age itself is one of the busiest. Families are being raised if they've had children, career demands are at an all-time high. Energy demands are very high, and hormonal disruption is taking place. Mitochondrial health is crucial. SS31 was founded by two scientists and hangs on the inner membrane of the mitochondria, and has been found to be a very good antioxidant. It also has been found to have an anti-inflammatory component, and can help with tendonitis. BEST MOMENTS 'When we look at menopause, it brings with it potential adversities in terms of health' 'Sleep is when we recycle our hormones and increase the number of hormones we need' 'This has the most hallmark checks of any product in the world' 'I do believe in higher doses of both to get the real benefit of it' VALUABLE RESOURCES Get a free snapshot of your health and personalised report at www.yourtotalhealthcheck.com Join The High Performance Health CommunityFree Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fastingPodcast Shownotes - www.angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Neil Paulvin is a multiple board-certified physician with certifications in Family Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulation, and Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. While we know that single bouts of exercise can create a short-term energy deficit, do they also influence our hunger levels? And what about long-term exercise training? Could it modify our appetite in ways that help us better control our weight? Recent research suggests that exercise may indeed play a role in appetite regulation. Could exercise modify the subjective and homeostatic mediators of appetite in ways that enhance our feelings of fullness after a meal? One of the most fascinating aspects of this research is the variability in responses between individuals. Why do some people experience changes in appetite and energy intake after exercise, while others don't? Could factors like adiposity, sex, or habitual physical activity levels play a role? In this episode, Dr. James Dorling of the University of Glasgow helps us delve into the evidence surrounding how factors like adiposity, sex, and habitual physical activity modulate our responses to exercise in terms of appetite, energy intake, and appetite-related hormone responses. About The Guest: Dr. James Dorling is a lecturer in Human Nutrition at the University of Glasgow. Dr. Dorling's research is broadly focused on three areas: (1) the impact of nutrition and physical activity interventions on obesity-related endpoints and biomarkers of aging; (2) the regulators of appetite and eating behaviours; and (3) the changes in appetite and eating behaviours in response to health interventions. During his PhD, he studied the effects of acute exercise and obesity-related single nucleotide polymorphisms on appetite and appetite-related hormones. Following this, Dr. Dorling joined Pennington Biomedical Research Center where he worked as a postdoctoral researcher. His postdoctoral research principally focussed on the influence of calorie restriction and physical activity on weight, markers of aging, and eating behaviours.

While commonly viewed as beneficial for weight loss and managing cardiometabolic conditions in the current obesity epidemic, chronic energy deficiency in the context of modern sports and exercise nutrition is linked to adverse health outcomes and diminished athletic performance. Nevertheless, the evidence regarding the negative impact of energy deficit on physical capacity and sports performance is not entirely clear. Although severe energy deficiency can impair physical capacity, it's noteworthy that humans can enhance aerobic fitness and strength even in the presence of significant energy deficits. Strikingly, many elite athletes compete at the highest levels despite displaying evident signs of energy deficiency. This raises intriguing questions about how the human body adapts to energy deficits, challenging conventional views on the relationship between energy availability and athletic prowess. To discuss some potential reasons for this ability to maintain peak physical performance while suppressing energetically demanding physiological traits, researcher Dr. Jose Areta of LJMU is on the podcast to discuss his work in this area. About The Guest: Dr. José Areta currently works as a lecturer in Sports Nutrition and Metabolism at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at LJMU. José's primary interest is in the area of training-nutrient interactions in humans. In other words, he investigates how to manipulate ingestion of carbohydrates, fat and protein around training to optimise physical performance and health. The outputs of his research have not only expanded the knowledge of the field but had significant impact and influence on determining current dietary recommendations and practices world-wide. His work has provided novel insights in relation to the amount, timing, quantity and distribution of carbohydrates, fat and protein and dietary supplements around training. Over the last few years José has been developing his research in the area of the endocrinological, metabolic and physiological effects of energy restriction, in which he is currently growing his research team and capability.

DOSE-EX is a four-armed randomized trial involving 82 individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. The participants were divided into four groups: standard care, calorie restriction, calorie restriction with exercise three times per week, and calorie restriction with exercise six times per week. Over a span of 16 weeks, the researchers assessed the effects of these interventions on beta-cell function using various indicators. The study's findings are incredibly interesting, demonstrating that exercise in combination with diet-induced weight loss leads to a substantial improvement in glucose-stimulated beta-cell function. Importantly, the results indicate the importance of considering both: a) the exercise dose, and b) the methodology of assessing beta-cell function, when evaluating intervention effectiveness. In this episode, Dr. Lyngbaek will elucidate the implications of these findings for the management of type 2 diabetes. We will explore the potential of exercise as a therapeutic tool, its optimal dosage, and the considerations for integrating it into individualized treatment plans. About The Guest: Dr. Mark Lyngbæk is a physician, currently in an introduction position at the Department of Rheumatology and Internal Medicine 2 at Holbæk Hospital, and also a PhD student at the Centre for Physical Activity Research at Rigshospitalet. His research has looked at exercise, beta-cell function and type 2 diabetes. He is supported by a research grant from the Danish Diabetes Academy, which is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation (grant number NNF17SA0031406). The Centre for Physical Activity Research is supported by TrygFonden (grants ID 101390, ID 20045, and ID 125132). Subscribe to PREMIUM

Links: Episode page with resources Subscribe to PREMIUM MASS Research Review About This Episode: Metabolic adaptation refers to the process by which the body adjusts its metabolism in response to changes in energy intake or body mass. This adjustment can occur in both directions, meaning that the body can increase or decrease its energy expenditure in response to changes in energy intake or body weight. When someone consumes fewer calories than their body requires for energy, the body will respond by slowing down its metabolism to conserve energy. This can make it harder to lose weight and maintain weight loss over time. Conversely, when someone consumes more calories than their body needs, the body will increase its metabolic rate in order to burn off the excess energy. There are several open debates in science about metabolic adaptation, including the actual magnitude of it, its relevance to weight loss, what measurement methods should be used, and the mechanisms underlying the contributory factors. Some people have framed metabolic adaptation as so significant that it makes weight loss attempts futile. While others, including in research, have referred to metabolic adaptation as an “illusion”. So what do we actually know about this concept and what is the pragmatic significance of it? To discuss the nuances of the topic, Alan and Danny are joined by Dr. Eric Trexler, who has published on this topic and has followed recent publications closely. About The Guest: Dr. Eric Trexler is Director of Education at Stronger By Science, where he co-hosts the SBS podcast. He also is one of the four contributors to the MASS Research Review. Eric has a prolific background in exercise science research, with more than 30 publications to his name by the time he completed his PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill. --- Subscribe to PREMIUM

This was followed by more sightings, countless paranormal experiences involving time anomalies, contacts with spirits and extra-dimensional beings. In 2020, after a series of transformational experiences, Dr. Lani discovered to be able to open a communication channel with cosmic beings and to access his and others' Akashic records through what he calls "STARGATE meditations”. With these, he has helped thousands of people worldwide connect to their star families, resulting in higher chakras activations, healings, past life memories, OBE. Two of these meditations have been tested at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, showing considerable effects on the individual scalp topographies of all 11 participants to a neuroscientific study with EEG. Do you call it periods, menstruation, or “that time of the month”?It is highly crucial to breaking the stigma around periods because the menstrual cycle is a normal bodily function in women much like anything else including urinating, pooping, or sneezing.Period poverty is such a big problem that 71% of women have no education about menstruation and 1 out of 5 girls drop out of school every month because of this. Women in rural areas rarely have access to hygienic period products as they cannot afford them. In fact, they use cotton cloth available at their house which can lead to severe infections. Helping them understand hygienic measures and educating them about them is crucial. It is essential to understand that both boys and girls pass through this phase of transformation. The difference is that women menstruate and their body goes through 4 cycles in a month where their energy changes, mood changes, and even hunger changes. On average, a woman spends 7 years of her life menstruating. So, it is essential to make this process smooth for her. Family members need to be more supportive and women need to take rest and consume home-cooked nutritious meals.Creating a non-judgemental society for women around menstruation and making them feel comfortable to talk about it and giving them the liberty to relax on such days by taking the help of science is extremely essential. In the United States, we have always lived with the history and realities of racism.Whether we have lived with it as an active part of our life or have had the privilege to ignore it and deny it, it has shaped our understanding of our country and each other. She sees an urgent need for healing our internal terrain. As well as healing the terrain of the world we live in.The Germ theory camp led by Louis Pasteur ascribed to the belief that each germ causes one disease, one germ causes one disease. The biologists and physiologists looking at Terrain theory are talking about how the environment around the cell or organism or microbe dictates what that organism is going to do.We live in fear of these germs and bacteria and fungi, but we're made up of them. That's what we are. We are actually nature. We've separated ourselves from that connection to nature and are being taught to fear it and that it's the cause of our illnesses. We have reconfigured the natural ecosystem around us into this hierarchy with us on top. Hands on our hips and microscope in hand. This is probably why our energy in the world is quite low at the moment. We are seeing sickness and disease run rampant.Sunlight is an energy source for our bodies but we're taught that it is dangerous for our skin. Sunlight is so essential for our mental health and well-being but we're being brainwashed to cover our skin with toxic sunscreens. Leaders breed leaders, not followers. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with Richard Winters, Practicing Emergency Physician, Professional Certified Coach, and Author of the Wall Street Journal Best Seller: "You're the Leader. Now what?" In this episode, Jason and Richard dive deep into what it really means to be a Leader, Manager, Mentor, Teacher, Supervisor, and Coach, and why it's important to have each hat in your toolkit. Tune into this episode for timeless wisdom every leader should hear about. 3 KEY POINTS: Leaders inspire others to become leaders. Leaders create synergy among everyone's differences. Leaders shed light on people's fears and help overcome them. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Richard recently published a wall street bestseller entitled "You're the Leader. Now What?" To be a better leader, be open to, understand, and discover different perspectives, and try to bring them together. A big part of becoming a better leader is those moments where you like you didn't do a good job and you're trying to learn how to be better. Continue to learn from mistakes and continue to learn from them. For Richard, leaders are individuals who help develop other leaders. They help others get the best out of a team and individuals. Management is more focused on what needs to be accomplished. Both Leadership and Management skills are crucial for any Manager/Leader. Richard wrote an article entitled "Four things that good leaders do when facing obstacles that bad leaders don't" talking about leaders shedding light on people's fears and worries. A coach helps make someone makes sense of their world. Many leaders are micromanagers, but that doesn't tend to work out well. Both sides will feel frustrated. There are three levels of delegation. Assigning someone a simple task Assigning someone a project, having them come up with a plan, and discuss that plan with you before moving forward Assigning someone a project and letting them have full responsibility It's helpful to learn about each other and go through these delegation levels to gain insight into what works, what doesn't, and how we approach things. Richard believes in assuming the best and working from that perspective, rather than having someone earn that trust. If you're not giving your trust initially, you're giving them distrust. Personality tests help us give names to things, to think about the way we are, how we think, how we make decisions, how we work with others, and how we differ from others. It may not be as black and white as what's found in the test results, but it helps us have a language to understand our different approaches and how we can approach things together. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with Rebecca Weiss, Co-Owner and Family Medicine Practitioner of Norterra Family Medicine, Co-Owner of Main Street Medical, Owner/Physician of Paradise Medspa and Wellness, and CEO of Tox & Tonic, LLC. In this episode, Rebecca shares practical wisdom from her years of experience, and how her past mistakes helped shape her success today. Tune in to learn about common traps new business owners should look out for and how to avoid them. 3 KEY POINTS: Don't be married to a brand. Don't fall for the sales pitch. Don't go into a career just for the money. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Her entrepreneurial journey began when she decided to leave a job she didn't enjoy, was bombarded with clients, and wasn't able to give her clients complete care as much as she wanted. Based on experience, Rebecca advises watching out for companies that take advantage of practitioners without much business training. She went bankrupt in 2016 and learned from this ordeal. She is a strong believer in Primary Care Medicine and later became a co-owner of a Direct Primary Care practice. As a proponent of Direct Primary Care, she believes in making medicine affordable, getting rid of 3rd-party insurance, and making patients' generic medications cheaper. Rebecca doesn't buy warranties for her devices. Instead, she pays for any repairs separately, which is more cost-effective in the long run. She draws the line between employer and employee but doesn't abuse her authority. She ensures that everyone feels valued and is part of the family. Different people are motivated by different things. Figure out what motivates your employees to ensure a healthy work environment. Spend money on marketing. Then, once the ball's rolling and your brand is known, you can cut back your costs. You don't need every device to start your business. Don't be married to a brand and don't fall for the sales pitch. Always maintain rational decision-making above all else. ABOUT THE GUEST: Dr. Daniel L. Stickler is the Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of The Apeiron Center for Human Potential and Chief Science Officer for Apeiron Academy. He is the Medical Director for the Neurohacker Collective, a Google consultant for wearable technology, epigenetics, and AI in healthcare and a guest lecturer at Stanford University on Epigenetics in Clinical Practice. He discovered that lifestyle was the key to creating an optimized life and his journey to find the ideal approach to optimizing human potential took him on a path through functional medicine, alternative care, holistic, naturopathic, and age-management medicine. Each modality fell short of the outcome of creating a truly optimized human mainly because they focused on the disease model of treating symptoms as opposed to a model that focuses on human systems, homeostatic balance and optimization. In 2008, a new world opened through the lens of genetics and epigenetics and his near obsession like fascination of the potentials for personalized human systems design led to the realization that we truly have the ability within us to take charge of our destiny and become the architects of our evolution. This intermedia and aesthetic approach pushes the sensuousness of the world back into an intellectual and scholarly understanding of it. Professor Campbell is the director of the Intermedia Workshop, a laboratory of visual and sensory ethnography. How does one wind up in Northeastern Siberia? Dr. Susan Crate recounts her almost 30 years conducting research in Russia, a journey that began with an interest in Russian folklore and a Bridges for Peace trip and resulted in a thirst to learn the Russian language and travel to Siberia. New Slavix host Lera sat down with Dr. Crate to talk about her research interests concerning cultural practices, kinship systems, climate change in Northeastern Siberia. ABOUT THE GUEST: Dr. Susan Crate is a professor of Anthropology in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at George Mason University. The bulk of her research centers on environmental and cognitive anthropology and human ecology among Viliui Sakha of Yakutia, Northeastern Siberia, but her research on the effects of unprecedented climate change has expanded to Canada, Mongolia, Peru, Wales, Kiribati, and the ever-so exotic Chesapeake Bay. She is the author of Cows, Kin, and Globalization: An Ethnography of Sustainability (2006), the coeditor of Anthropology and Climate Change: From Encounters to Actions (2009) and its second volume, Anthropology and Climate Change: From Actions to Transformations (2016), and a lead author on Chapter 1 of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's “Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate”. She also stars in The Anthropologist (2015). From the documentary review by the New York Times: "The film follows Susan Crate, an anthropologist at George Mason University, and her daughter, Katie Yegorov-Crate, as they globe-hop to places where climate change is having a dramatic effect. In Siberia, they see hayfields that are underwater because of the thawing of the permafrost layer. In Kiribati in the South Pacific, they talk to residents grappling with the possibility that their islands will disappear into the sea. (“Right here was the most-populated village on the island,” a man tells Ms. Crate as they stand in water up to the breastbone.)" On this episode, hosts Tracy and Cullan sit down with geographer, anthropologist, food studies expert, Dr. Elizabeth Cullen Dunn. Dr. Dunn delves into her fascinating experiences studying abroad in Martial Law-ed China, working in a Communist-era baby food factory in Poland, and living and working in camps for victims of forced migration in the Republic of Georgia. Her recent work and activism centers on food workers, refugees, and asylum seekers in the United States and Europe. ABOUT THE GUEST: Dr. Dunn is a professor in Indiana University Bloomington's Department of Geology. Her work regularly merges food studies with politics, focusing on the restructuring and privatization of food labor in Poland, fruit and vegetable processing and smuggling in the Republic of Georgia, and investigations into the red tape encompassing UN Food and Agriculture Organization and European Union food regulations. Her latest book, No Path Home: Humanitarian Camps and the Grief of Displacement, explores how internally displaced persons exist in humanitarian camps in after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War.
