How far would you go to be considered "one of the boys"? When it comes to Greek life at the College of Charleston, many students will go to great lengths. One student, Mikey Schmidt, saw an opportunity to create a multi-million-dollar drug ring all for wealth, influence, and acceptance. However, Mikey's social ascension would come crashing down, ending in scandal, betrayal, and murder. Investigative journalist Max Marshall exposes the hidden crimes of the deadly drug trafficking ring at the College of Charleston and explains how fraternity pledges fell into corruption. Behind the pop culture stereotypes of “Greek life” undeniably lies one of the major breeding grounds of American power: 80 percent of Fortune 500 executives, 85 percent of Supreme Court justices, and all but four presidents since 1825 have been fraternity members. It is a world that most people think they know about, but what really happens behind closed doors, especially on some of America's toniest college campuses, is largely hidden to outsiders. Journalist Max Marshall aims to expose this elite world, examining both its allure and dark underside in his first book, AMONG THE BROS: A Fraternity Crime Story Marshall arrived on the campus of the College of Charleston in 2018 originally intending to investigate a small-time trafficking ring, but as he started reporting, it became clear that the scope of the crimes was far bigger than what was made public: several student deaths, a nationwide trafficking network, and the seizure of 21 million dollars' worth of black-market Xanax.
The abuse of prescription drugs on college campuses has skyrocketed in the last 10 years—and by extension, so too has the intricate ecosystem of college-aged dealers and distribution networks. So today, we're covering a multimillion-dollar fraternity drug ring scandal at the College of Charleston with the investigative journalist, Max Marshall, who covered it in his book, Among the Bros. We talk about power, privilege, and the near-total lack of consequences in this story — and how it serves as a bit of an allegory for the real world. Need a primer on the various names involved in this story? Mikey Schmidt, the main drug plug for the fraternity with connections to cartels in Atlanta, and the contact for the fraternity's distribution networks and runners Rob Liljeberg, a former Eagle Scout who went on to become the president of the Kappa Alpha fraternity Zach Kligman, also known as the "Charleston Kingpin," who would help traffic the drugs into Charleston Patrick Moffly, a socialite, beloved party boy, and son of a big-time real estate developer and a Congressional candidate. Moffly helped create and sell the drugs sold through the fraternity. Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/fraternity-drug-ring. The legend of Rashun Richardson's rise to high school basketball glory crumbles, and a much older man named Sidney Gilstrap-Portley is left to pick up the pieces. What starts as a tale of deceit and second chances, turns into an introspective look at who gets to profit from someone's story. In part two of The Imposter, reporter Max Marshall concludes Richardson's saga, and catches up with the former high school star for an honest conversation.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Among the Bros: A Fraternity Crime Story by Max Marshall https://amzn.to/3NV7x21 A brilliant young investigative journalist traces a murder and a multi-million-dollar drug ring, leading to an unprecedented look at elite American fraternity life. When Max Marshall arrived on the campus of the College of Charleston in 2018, he hoped to investigate a small-time fraternity Xanax trafficking ring. Instead, he found a homicide, several student deaths, and millions of dollars circulating around the Deep South. He also opened up an elite world hidden to outsiders. Behind the pop culture cliches of “Greek life” lies one of the major breeding grounds of American power: 80 percent of Fortune 500 executives, 85 percent of Supreme Court justices, and all but four presidents since 1825 have been fraternity members. With unprecedented immersion, this book takes readers inside that bubble. Under the live oaks and Spanish moss of Travel + Leisure's “Most Beautiful Campus in America,” Marshall traces several “C of C” boys' journeys from fraternity pledges to interstate drug traffickers. The result is a true-life story of hubris, status, money, drugs, and murder—one that lifts a curtain on an ecstatic and disturbing way of life. With expert pacing and a cool eye, he follows a never-ending party that continues after funerals and mass arrests. An addictive and haunting portrait of tomorrow's American establishment, Among the Bros is nonfiction storytelling at its finest.

Investigative journalist Max Marshall joins the show to discuss his new book, “Among the Bros,” which delves into the bust of five College of Charleston Kappa Alpha fraternity members and their friends who were part of a multi-million dollar narcotics network. And if that doesn't sound dirty enough for you, the arrests came as the result of an investigation into the murder of a former student who was the son of a luxury real estate developer. It's a story of greed, entitlement, and as Max writes, the consequences of living a life without any consequences.

It's the calm before the storm on the show this week — Steven and Ian are working on their year-end albums lists ahead of the big reveal in early December (1:57), so in the meantime they decided to answer to some listener questions. But before that, Ian shared the shocking news that he watched The Last Waltz for the first time over the Thanksgiving break. What did Ian think of this foundational film in Steven's life? Naturally, he gravitated to Van Morrison's purple suit. The guys also commenced a brief Bookcast segment to talk about the hellacious new book about southern fraternities (and how they coincide with southern rap), Among The Bros by Max Marshall. In the mailbag (29:38), Steven and Ian address topics as diverse as Gen Z's obsession with personal listening statistics (30:20), whether an artist sounding a lot like another artist is a distraction (36:50), the value (or not) of demos being added to reissues and box sets, and a "yay or nay" verdict on Belle And Sebastian. (44:57)In Recommendation Corner (51:07), Ian talks up the latest from Quannic and Steven recommends the extremely long in the works new album by Peter Gabriel.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. We broke down how we both are finding the freedom to express ourselves creatively during this pandemic and how it is more important to be true to self in your creative endeavors than being beholden to someone else’s perception. You can find Max at @maxwmarshall on Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter.

Max Marshall has undergone no small transition over the last few years. From trying to make a go of songwriting in Toronto, to studying folklore at Memorial University in Newfoundland, to becoming a father and moving back to the Windsor area, he’s grown as a person and a musician. Derek sat down with Max in his quaint Essex County home after a meal of steak and lobster to discuss authenticity in songwriting, pursuing art while raising a family, and folk music’s lack of place in contemporary culture. Deep n’ Twisted I had to depart from the soulful vibe I was in and turned to some iconoclast and eclectic deeper cuts I had on the hard drive. It is chilled, somewhat Deep and slightly Twisted. Please consume without pre-conceived expectations. Just let this one roll.. Playlist: 2014 Touch Me (Mario Chris Remix). Jerry Ropero, Tom Novy, Tom & Jerry, Abigail Bailey 2013 Spread Love (Holmes Price Remix). P A U L I E 2015 Milagro (Original Mix). DJ Meme, Bazzo Ruthel 2013 Lovely Mistake Part 2 (Chris Deepak Remix). Dimi Stuff, Natalia Tsalli 2015 Trippin (Mickey Remix). Shameboy, Max Marshall 2015 My Dream (Original Mix). Seb Skalski 2015 Booty Angel (Jimpster Remix). Till Von Sein, Kid Enigma, Jimpster 2015 The Beat Inside. Soledrifter, Marck Jamz 2013 Why Cant We Live Together (Original Mix). Timo Jahns 2015 Sound From The Second Floor (DJ Meme Reconstruction) [Xtian Edit]. Vincent Ache, DJ Meme 2015 Coming Back To You (Original Mix). Yotto 2015 Light Up the Night (Original Mix). DEF 2015 Anyway I Want (Purple Velvet Remix). Navarro, DJ Fudge, Purple Velvet 2015 Drive Me Crazy (Deep Mix) [Xtian Edit feat. Mr V]. Dan Mela, Lady Blacktronika, Deep Highlights: Starting with a different take on a House classic “Touch Me”.. Just to ease you in and get your attention. Check Jerry Ropero and Abigail Bailey facebbok pages for further info: https://www.facebook.com/jerryroperoentertainment/?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/abigail.bailey.18?fref=ts “Spread Love” included for the driving bassline which I attempted to be the common thread on the set. PAULIE fb page if you feel like knowing this artist better : https://www.facebook.com/pauliemusicfactory “Milagro” a very Brazilian number from DJ Meme, loving the dubbed vocals. https://www.facebook.com/DJ.Meme/?fref=ts https://soundcloud.com/dj-meme “Lovely Mistake Part 2” dropped for it its easy deep house groove. Been buying a lot of Chris Deepak remixes lately, great talent from Greece. Chris Deepak on soundclound https://soundcloud.com/chrisdeepak “Trippin” to dive into something a bit more progressive but still light and deep. Straight into the great Pole Seb Skalski's take on the house classic of MLK “ I Have a Dream”.. It is deep, has rhythm and fits perfectly with what I like to listen to as chillout. https://soundcloud.com/seb-skalski https://pro.beatport.com/artist/seb-skalski/60322 With the Jimpster track “Booty Angel” , you know we are in deep house territory.. But the track is twisted with a some very ethereal vocals intertwined with a rap NYC chorus.. try it.. https://soundcloud.com/jimpster http://www.freerangerecords.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/jimpster.freerange “The Beat Inside” another true deep house funky number but not quite as easily savoured as the previous ones.. It is about finding the Beat inside of you ;0. https://soundcloud.com/soledrifter http://www.traxsource.com/artist/90838/soledrifter https://www.facebook.com/djsoledrifter Timo Jahns’ take on “Why Can’t We Live Together?” is just one of those tunes, where you feel you know the melody but are kept wanting and then BOOM, chorus comes and you just get the structure.. Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/timojahns “Sound From The Second Floor” the true deep house jam I love and DJ Meme on the remix.. I added the vocal from “Why Can’t We Live Together?” just because I could and thought not bad Xtian, not bad… Yotto’s “Coming Back to You” just continuing the deep house vibe.. Great production and if you pay attention clever percussions.. https://soundcloud.com/yotto https://www.facebook.com/yottomusic https://pro.beatport.com/artist/yotto/114140 “Light Up the Night” deep, dark hip-hop feel.. What’s not to like?? Good track do not miss it.. This is clever House.. “Anyway I Want” deep and twisted.. Exquisite production but you need to get into the deep groove frame of mind to appreciate it.. https://soundcloud.com/dj-fudge https://www.facebook.com/DJ.FUDGE.OFFICAL And wrapping the set up with my edit of “Drive Me Crazy” I really do like that Deep Shit…. https://soundcloud.com/msladyblacktronika Will back soon A bientôt Xtian
