Vancouver will finally get to watch its first-ever Black+Queer dramedy web series this week when five episodes of Novelette is Trying screen at the 2024 Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Novelette is Trying follows Novelette, a cynical, anti-social, bisexual woman who finds herself newly single at 30, and decides, rather reluctantly, to take on a roommate. At first, the extroverted, outspoken Audre seems like an odd choice for a roommate. But, although their personalities clash, Audre's boldness and lack of boundaries soon rub off on Novelette in the best way, encouraging her to put herself back into the dating pool. Audacious, poignant, and funny, Novelette is Trying – which will also be released on OUTtv in 2025 – comes to us from the wonderfully creative mind of Giselle Miller, the Jamaican-Canadian writer, showrunner, filmmaker, and three-time Leo Award-nominated actor. Her credits include Young, Single, and Black, Yolanda the Goddess, and Big People Tingz. In this fascinating conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Giselle reflects on her journey to and with Novelette, and the joys and challenges of bringing this groundbreaking series to the screen. David Livingstone - The Dying God: The Hidden History of Western CivilizationOct 2, 2023David Livingstone is a researcher and writer specialising in making connections between occult practice and political machinations in a logical and verifiable way. This includes re-writing history to a certain audience for a specific purpose, including erasing or lessening the impacts of some of the most obscene periods in human history.David Livingstone was born in Montreal in 1966 of a Jamaican-Canadian father (a school teacher) and French Canadian mother. At age seven, he asked his parents who Plato and Socrates were. Told they were truth seekers, he was shocked. "You mean people don't know what the truth is?" He resolved to find it out.Livingstone studied history as an undergraduate but dropped out in 1992 when he realized he was being indoctrinated. "When I read that the Indo European [Aryan] race emerged from the Caucuses, out of nowhere, I got suspicious, and began the 13 years of research that led to my first book, The Dying God: The Hidden History of Western Civilization."While writing that book, Livingstone paid his bills by planting trees in British Columbia and upholstering furniture in Montreal. Raised as an agnostic, he accepted Islam in 1992 after making a study of the major world religions. He married in 2000 and has three children.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

I don't intend to cause harm or offense, but I apologize for any words which could have communicated a lack of empathy or intentional thoughtlessness. Please respectfully let me know what I could have said better or seen in a different light. I want to keep learning so I can create opportunities for conversation and change, and I hope that you will grow with me. Nat is 1st-generation Jamaican-Canadian, so she was able to offer some much-needed insight on the Sean Paul debacle. We think Vanessa is absolutely gorgeous! It's unfortunate that fatphobia and racism in the industry negatively affected her career and mental heath. Cheers to (and justice for) Vanessa White! For the 12th episode of AW CLASSROOM, we interview Jamaican-Canadian artist Tau Lewis about her self-taught journey and how she intentionally creates doll-like sculptures to embody spirit and connect to her ancestors. Tau Lewis (b. 1993, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) employs arduous methods such as hand sewing, carving, and assemblage to build intricate sculptural portraits and quilts. A self-taught artist, her practice is rooted in healing personal, collective, and historical traumas through labour. The materiality of Lewis’ work is often informed by her surrounding environment: she constructs out of found, gathered, and recycled materials from Toronto, New York, and outside of her family's home in Negril, Jamaica. The transformative act of repurposing these materials recalls practices of resourcefulness in diasporic contexts; upcycling is a recuperative act that reclaims both agency and memory. The portraits themselves reference both individuals in Lewis’ community and imagined ancestors. Lewis will be included in 2021 exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Grinnell College Museum of Art, Grinnell; Prospect 5, New Orleans; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. If you enjoy this podcast, you will LOVE this episode. Relistening to it made me feel inspired and in awe of my amazing friend Oneika all over again. In this conversation, we talk about travel (of course) and how it’s important for Oneika, as a Jamaican-Canadian, to represent diversity in the travel sector, she doesn’t see much of other people who look like her. We talk about being your own brand, the importance of being open to hard discussions online, and maintaining grace. Registration is now open for the 2015 Out of Excuses Writing Workshop and Retreat. For the last two years the event has had a very limited size, and as a result has sold out very quickly. For 2015 we have moved to a new venue, removed the attendance limit, and increased the amount of instructor interaction—all without raising the price. The 2015 Out of Excuses Writing Workshop and Retreat will be held from September 20th through the 27th on the Independence of the Seas. It's a cruise ship. [UPDATE: We have sold through our original block of rooms. The cruise has provided us with additional rooms, but the rate is higher for these. The updated rates are now reflected on the registration page, and in the numbers provided below] The base price of $1300 covers the full week of intensive seminars, writing exercises, and free writing time, plus meals, double-occupancy lodging, and a cruise to four different Caribbean destinations. Attendees will also be invited to submit questions for some of the episodes of Writing Excuses which will be recorded while we're at sea. At sea. Seriously. SEMINARS Each seminar will include writing exercises and Q&A time with the instructor. Topics will include: Outlining Revision Pacing Suspense Humor Worldbuilding Character creation ... and much more. ADDITIONAL BREAKOUT SESSIONS There will be a limited number of additional breakout sessions and one-on-one sessions with individual instructors. There is no additional charge for these, but because of the size of the event they will be distributed by lottery. The first 100 attendees registering prior to January 15th, 2015, will be entered in the lottery. These breakout sessions include: 6-member novel critique groups: Members will submit excerpts up to 5000 words for critique by the group as well as one of the podcasters. (Please note that this means you are committing to critique the stories of the other group members.) 6-member short story critique groups: Members will submit short stories up to 5000 words for critique by the group as well as one of the podcasters. (Please note that this means you are committing to critique the stories of the other group members.) 6-member outlining sessions: Each person must come prepared with a story idea, including an ending. The host will help each attendee turn that into a working outline, ready for them to begin writing. One-on-one Q&As: This is a 15-minute one-on-one session with one of the hosts, and you decide how that time will be spent. We can critique the first five pages of a manuscript, drill down on a worldbuilding conundrum, answer specific questions, or offer general advice. GUEST HOSTS Nalo Hopkinson.
