Today, I am blessed to have here with me Maria, an FDN practitioner, and Kristin, a Board-certified nutritionist, are plainspoken friends and practitioners who share a passion for women's health, especially women's health at midlife. As both are themselves menopausal, they've refined the art and science of thriving as a midlife woman based on both clinical and personal experience. They combine individualized nutrition and lifestyle changes tailored to midlife women's needs with mindset coaching, lab testing and hormone replacement therapy education to help women thrive so that they can stop or prevent their health from spinning out of control. In this episode, Maria and Kristin open up the show by revealing how they got involved in the health space. Maria and Kristin talk about their work with perimenopausal and menopausal women to create fundamental hormonal and whole health transformations. Plus, they give tips on how you can have a smooth transition to perimenopause and menopause and they provide practical advice on adjusting your lifestyle accordingly. Tune in as we chat about ditching oatmeal, avoiding veganism, and why we love the DUTCH test. Unfortunately, Maria was not getting the answers that she was seeking from her doctor. The doctor wanted to put Maria on hormone therapy right away. For sleep issues, the doctor prescribed clonazepam. Overall, Maria's doctor didn't get to the causes of why she was experiencing certain symptoms. For Kristin, she had hormone issues her entire life. The solution from doctors was always a birth control pill. However, Kristin didn't know enough to understand that this was hormonal dysfunction. In Kristin's thirties, she started to battle her weight, libido, and skin. Kristin's doctor told her that nothing was wrong with her. Sadly, Kristin's doctor would not check her hormones. Eventually, Kristin pursued a nutrition program and became board-certified. She started a journey on changing her food, hormones, and lifestyle. [09:25] How Making Lifestyle Changes Can Health Your Body Less is more when it comes to training. You may be overtraining. When you reduce your training, your weight may start to melt off. Sleep is a massive piece of your lifestyle. If you haven't already, it's time to get serious about your sleep patterns. Also, nourish your body and get monthly massages – it will make all the difference. [12:45] Making A Smooth Transition To Perimenopause When progesterone declines, it is never coming back. Menopause is a full 12 months without a period. The closer you get to menopause, there will be a lot of symptoms because your hormones are in flux. Some women, even with good adrenal health, are going to suffer. If you have low estrogen and low testosterone, you are fighting an uphill battle. [16:20] Practical Steps You Can Take Before Hitting Perimenopause First, dial in your nutrition. Women need to put down the smoothie and start eating bacon, eggs, and steak. Next, address adrenal health. It's time to learn how to live with your stress. In your thirties and forties, taking care of YOU is really important. Salt baths, massages, and wine will be essential self-care pieces. If you don't want to hit a brick wall in your late forties, then you need to deal with your self-care routine now. [23:35] Oatmeal: Why It May Not Be As Healthy As You Think Women don't understand satiety. They mistake nutritional choices that fill them up as satiety. Someone has oatmeal at 9 am, then they are snacking again at 11 am. A nourishing meal should not be made out of kindling. A meal should be something that will satisfy you for four or five hours. Your first meal of the day should be protein-heavy. Most of the time, oatmeal is a dessert. Plus, women will feel full because they are bloated from eating oatmeal. [27:30] The Importance of Eating Animal Protein vs. Plant-Based Protein There is a massive difference between animal protein and plant protein. Primarily, the most significant difference is the carbohydrate load. Meat will be mostly fat and protein. Whereas plant-based protein will be high in carbs. Another difference is the amino acid quality. A lot of people eating a plant-based diet are also on anti-anxiety medications. Why are girls in their twenties and thirties on more medications than people in their fifties? [32:55] Strong Stomach Acid Is One of Your Best Anti-Aging Tools As we get older, we become more nutrient deficient. If you don't have stomach acid, you aren't going to get the iron from meat. A lot of Maria and Kristin's clients are on hormone replacement therapy. However, if they don't have strong stomach acid, they won't benefit from their supplements. Stomach acid is going to sanitize anything that we eat. [39:55] Why The DUTCH Test Is The Best Diagnostic Tool In Functional Medicine Maria loves the DUTCH test because of estrogen metabolism. We want to see that the body is behaving with estrogen. Urine is the only way you will see estrogen metabolism. If you don't have good estrogen metabolism, there are certain lifestyle tweaks you can make. Also, Maria loves the DUTCH test because it is extremely empowering to women. Kristin loves the adrenal piece. Too many women normalize what they are living with. Learn more about DUTCH testing: https://dutchtest.com/ AND MUCH MORE! So we have said goodbye to 2020 and all of the insanity that came with it, but there is something we haven’t said goodbye to: working from home. Many companies have pledged to work from home well into 2021, leaving us sitting in  our sweatpants, computer monitors and weird makeshift home offices with reluctant acceptance. People are spending more time than EVER indoors and at their screens, and that’s why it’s never been MORE important to have plants not only in our homes, but in our work from home office set ups. Since WFH isn't going anywhere, in 2021, I'm choosing to reframe it from a frustration to an opportunity. An opportunity to have complete control over our WFH environment and create our desk space oasis to look exactly like we want it. Today’s episode is all about the why and how behind bringing plants into our workspaces, whether you are still working from home or are back in your office. Cobbling together a work from home set up was STRESSFUL in 2020, in our old apartment  I had a desk that folded up into the wall, so I couldn’t even decorate and settle in the way I wanted. But now, as we turn the page to 2021, let’s shake things up create some stress free and  joyful moments in our lives! For me the solution here has been plants and something that blew me away recently is how many people in our community are going HAM on their workspaces with plants. I posted my planty wfh set up on IG in December, asking if anyone else created a jungle oasis at their desk the way I did in 2020, and SO many of you sent pictures of your amazing planty home office set ups, and asked for help and ideas for how to set up your own. So this episode is for you plant friends, inspired by you and members of our community, and I hope everyone walks away from this episode with one idea to incorporate a little more green into their daily workflow.  I’ve broken this episode into two sections: the WHY where we dive into the reasons why having plants are so important in our space and talk a little about biophilic design and then part two the HOW. I share ideas inspired from the WHY section, break down the ways I incorporated plants and biophilic design into my home office and then review some photos listeners sent in and hope their setups might inspire you as well.  Get the free download with 9 Tips for Greening Up Your Work From Home Office Space In the episode we learn: [02:07] Why Bloom and Grow Radio is doing an episode on #plantywfh spaces [04:39] Check out Maria’s Planty WFH space tour [05:03] What to expect from this episode on work from home setups and biophilic design [06:50] The AMAZING and unbelievable benefits of engaging with plants and biophilic design, according to 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design [07:27] What is biophilia, the idea behind it, and the important figures behind this wonderful hypothesis [09:24] The psychological role of plants in our creativity [10:09] How being around nature and scenery affects patient recovery, as studied by Dr. Ulrich in 1972 to 1981 [11:13] A review of direct versus involuntary attention based on studies by Stephen R. I’m thankful 2020 is coming to a close and excited for 2021, I think a silver lining 2020 has given us is truly understanding the power of plants and how they can help us relieve stress and cultivate more joy in our lives. My goal for Bloom and Grow is to help everyone successfully care for plants for that exact reason, to make the world a kinder and greener place. Now… there is also a dark side to this hobby of plant care. There is a moment in all of our lives where our hobby teeters the thin line between joyful and stressful. Where we fall so deeply in love with plants, maybe we bring too many home at once, or go through a season of life where we can’t care for our collection and then feel disappointed in ourselves. I initially thought my struggles with plant parent overwhelm have been unique, an outlier in our community, but after hearing from you in the listener survey, or in dms and emails, I know this moment of Plant Parent Overwhelm is something we all struggle with.   On this episode of BAGR, we revisit highlights of Episode 43: Your Brain On Plants, in which I interviewed Dr Caitlin Vander Weele, a neuroscientist about what chemically happens in our brain when we get addicted for plants. The conversation was eye opening, and on this topic, feel like the things Caitlin shares shed so much light on a problem so many plant parents struggle with at one point through out their plant parenthood. After snippets of that episode with Caitlin, I then share experiences, strategies and suggestions on how to deal with Plant Parent Overwhelm and how to go on a plant pause.    In this episode we learn: [03:09] Why Maria wanted to tackle plant parent overwhelm in this special episode [07:17] How this AMAZING liquid fertilizer lessened my stress about plant care [08:56] Maria narrates her personal experience with plant pause and Billy’s intervention when she peaked her plant obsession [10:11] What is dopamine? How does taking care of plants, or successfully growing an herb garden in Maria’s case, release dopamine and fuel our plant craze? [13:16] Dr Caitlin explains how the dopamine in our brains can cause compulsive behaviors a.k.a. buy more plants than we intend [14:41] What is a neurotransmitter? Dr Caitlin describes the molecules, synapses, and receptors in layman’s terms, for better understanding of that new plant high! [17:16] How are plants different from our other ‘material obsessions’? What is oxytocin and why does taking care of plants (and babies) release this hormone? [19:12] The four major stages of compulsive buying behavior: anticipation, preparation, shopping, and regret [21:31] Dr Caitlin explains different research and hypotheses exploring why plants are good for our mental health [23:36] Why being in nature unlocks our creativity and brings us a more positive emotional state [24:09] Maria shares how checking her plants regularly in the morning makes her feel settled and less stressed [25:13] How does plant care affect our brain and how we process our thoughts? [26:33] What are some of the things you can look out for to avoid an unhealthy relationship with plants? Maria gives her personal experiences when she went through an unhealthy obsession with plants [28:27] How to Manage Plant Parent Overwhelm Tip #1: Understand your plant number [30:00] How to Manage Plant Parent Overwhelm Tip #2: Accept that you’re overwhelmed and forgive yourself! [30:42] How to Manage Plant Parent Overwhelm Tip #3: Assess where you are [31:16] How to Manage Plant Parent Overwhelm Tip #4: Set a budget and STICK. TO. IT. [31:47] How to Manage Plant Parent Overwhelm Tip #5: Find your focus [32:16] How to Manage Plant Parent Overwhelm Tip #6: Work with what you got!  [33:38] Maria shares her plant pause experience, her realizations during her plant pause, and how it benefited her plants and her home [35:33] Plant Pause Tip #1: Define your rules — YOU know what YOU can do [36:51] Plant Pause Tip #2: Involve your community (and get closer with them) [38:16] Plant Pause Tip #3: Set a timeframe [38:50] Plant Pause Tip #4: Be kind to yourself [39:25] Plant Pause Tip #5: Remember it’s quality over quantity [40:15] If you decide to take a plant pause, don’t worry! Maria shares some fun things you can do while on your plant pause [40:27] Streamline your design and collection, learn your plants’ Latin names, propagate, fertilize, and learn learn learn while doing your plant pause [41:24] Plant parenthood can be seasonal and you can have times when you aren’t being the best plant parent to your plants, and that’s okay! [42:11] Maria shares her musings about the year that’s passed and about the new year to come [43:38] Maria’s exciting news! Maria Granovsky knows exactly what it takes to quit and start something new because she quit her profession not once but twice! Maria got her Ph.D. in medical and molecular genetics from the University of Toronto. During her post-doc training, she decided not to go down the path as a scientist but rather pursue her lifelong interest in the law. She received her law degree from Georgetown University and went on to work as a patent litigator for over 10 years.   During that time, Maria took some time away from the law to write and sell a novel. Ultimately, though, she decided to return to law for a couple more years. Maria delved into marketing courses in order to help with business development of her own law practice. She quickly began helping other lawyer friends with business development for their law practices as well. She realized that she had a knack for marketing and really enjoyed this aspect of the business. About a year and half ago, Maria quit her legal practice in order to start her own business helping other lawyers with marketing and business development.   Today we talk to Maria about how she navigated these various career pivots and what she has learned from them.   Here is what we chat about in this episode: How graduate school can be the path of least resistance Why Maria took time away from law to write a novel and ultimately decided to go back to law How her experience with business development in her own legal practice led her to start her marketing and coaching business. How she moved past having her identity tied up with being a lawyer Why it makes sense to start a new business that is tangentially related to your career Why everyone has to learn marketing and business development regardless of their field   Why networking is like a negotiation and how you can make it work for you   Resources mentioned in this episode: Pivot, by Jenny Blake   Where to find Maria: www.mariagranovsky.com Linkedin: @mariagranovsky Twitter: @mgranovsky   Follow along for more: www.lessonsfromaquitter.com Facebook Instagram Twitter

How does it feel to watch your dreams fade away? It’s never a good feeling, but what if those dreams involve how many children to have or when to walk away and end your journey to conceive a child? Somehow, this dream cuts deeper than other dreams that may go unfulfilled in your life.    Dr. Maria Rothenburger is a fertility therapist and coach who has been through infertility challenges. Her doctoral research focused on post-traumatic growth as opposed to PTSD. Though she still practices as a psychotherapist, her passion has become fertility coaching, as she uses a four-pronged approach for movement toward optimal fertility.    Episode Highlights:   How she and her husband tried for more than 6 years, going through deep depression, anxiety, and intense marriage struggles Why they decided the process wasn’t worth the pain and decided to be child-free until changing their minds to pursue adoption What post-traumatic growth is and how you can recognize it Why Maria is passionate about growth and uses it in coaching What is involved in the question: Can we have more children? Questions to consider if you are wondering if “this journey needs to end”: Do the negatives of trying to conceive outweigh the positives? Do the positives of stopping outweigh the negatives? Are you “talking the talk” but not “walking the walk”? Do you spend time obsessing about trying to conceive instead of living life? Do you live in a way that isn’t in line with your personality, values, and beliefs? Do you feel resentful of the time and energy it takes to try to conceive? Maria Seidman is the CEO and co-founder of Yapp, an award-winning platform where anyone can create and instantly publish a mobile application for your event, group, or promotion. Before founding Yapp in 2011, she ran mobile for Warner Bros. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children, one of which was born while launching Yapp. She is passionate about women in technology, mobile trends, media, and entrepreneurship. Seidman was named Entrepreneur Magazine's Emerging Entrepreneur of 2014. Here are the highlights of our conversation with our guest: Maria starts off with how her frustration of not being able to know to code paved the way to her passion in making software that users love to use to enhance their lives. About a women’s retreat that inspired her to create Yapp, at what point she decided that it was worth the investment and the process she went through in creating the app from validation to looking for a technical co-founder. Maria walks us through her choice of approach and steps she took from conception of idea to coming up with a prototype. The timelines and phases Yapp went through and some of the mistakes that they have learned the hard way. She also shares that, if she can start all over again, she would start on the mobile side and emphasize user testing and market research before building a single line of code. Solve the problem really well for a specific user and start from that → Why Maria’s advice can save you tons of time, money and effort. The transition she went through from working in an organization as global as Warner Brothers, the hustle she needed to employ when running her own start-up company and the pros and cons that went with the change. The initial hurdles they had encountered before they gained traction such as building their reputation and finding early adopters; and even the current ones now that they have scaled. The steps they implemented to get through their challenges and the iterations they did to optimize adoptions including efficient prioritization. She also talks about scaling customer acquisition and the roadmap for Yapp. Yapp’s ideal audience and the coolest things that they are working on right now.

Plant friends, I’ve been fortunate enough to take a lot of deeper dives in the science of plant care since quarantine happened and my outlook on plant care and the hobby of keeping plants has dramatically shifted in the last year and a half. I find myself turning away from blogs and towards textbooks and have a new deep appreciation for the horticulturalists on this show who can truly dive deeper with us and explain the why behind the how of all the practices we are told to do on care cards and social media posts.
