Many of us obsess over our weight. However, our relationships with food and weight are often a symptom of something else. Today, I'm joined by Tricia Nelson who shows us how to go deeper by healing the underlying causes of emotional eating. Lasting improvements to weight require us to address Stress levels Personal priorities Past and present traumas Emotional blocks About Tricia Nelson Tricia Nelson lost fifty pounds by identifying and healing the underlying causes of her emotional eating. She has spent nearly thirty years researching the hidden causes of the addictive personality. Tricia is an Emotional Eating Expert and author of the #1 bestselling book, Heal Your Hunger, 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now. She is also the host of the popular podcast, The Heal Your Hunger Show. A highly regarded speaker and coach, Tricia has been featured on NBC, CBS, KTLA, FOX, and Discovery Health. Emotional Eating is a Sign of Something Deeper Emotional eating comes in a number of forms. In short, Tricia defines it as burying your emotions with food. This is an unconscious behavior much of the time. We discuss when this becomes an addiction and a sign of a much larger problem. This gets to why most diets fail. Tricia explains that this happens when people focus on the symptom rather than the cause. Weight gain is merely the result of something else. When we ignore this, we may be able to lose weight. However, failing to address underlying emotional causes means that any improvements will be temporary. The Root of Eating Disorders Tricia talks about the primary drivers of emotional eating. These are pain, fear, and guilt. A lot of this is rooted in the way we're living. It's not so much an eating problem as it is a living problem. We have to examine how we're living. For those of us who are constantly trying to people-please, have a racing mind, or are afraid of emotional expression, eating disorders are a common result. This all gets to the notion that food cravings are emotional and self-created. There is no reason to blame yourself for this. However, once you understand that you created them, you can begin to change your behavior to eliminate the problem. Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “It's not about the food. Many people don't know what to say to their doctors if they have issues in their sex life. This is tough for us physicians too. We're often not sure what to tell our patients because we aren't comfortable with it too. Today's guest, wants us all to join the discussion around this important and often neglected topic. To start helping patients with issues concerning sexuality you should: First, heal your own sexual issues Establish a setting in which patients feel comfortable with their vulnerability Communicate the idea that sexuality changes over a lifetime About Dr. Sonia Wright Dr. Sonia Wright is a board-certified radiologist, a trained sexual counselor, and a life coach (rumor has it, she has also worked in a sex toy store). She received her education from Stanford University, the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, the Mayo Clinic, and the University of Michigan. Dr. Sonia is on a mission to help women embrace their sexuality as well as end the emotional pain and isolation associated with sexual difficulties. She believes wholeheartedly that all women deserve to experience pleasurable sexual intimacy. Dr. Sonia has a natural ability to put people at ease while discussing sensitive issues related to sex. She enjoys combining this natural ability with her medical knowledge, sexual counseling skills, and life coaching tools to create her unique brand of sex coaching. She tackles the hard issues by normalizing the situation and sharing helpful information while coaching from a caring and humorous perspective. Healing Ourselves So We Can Help Others Most of us did not get training around sex and sexuality in medical school. Our patients often expect us to have answers. Yet, when we have our own issues around the topic, we may find ourselves unable to provide the help our patients require. Dr. Sonia wants us to consider our own sexuality first. We need to have connections with our own bodies before we can help others with theirs. Dr. Sonia urges us to examine our thoughts and personal wishes around sexuality. Once a connection between the mind and the body is established, you can begin to move forward and help other women do the same. Creating a Safe Space to Discuss Sexuality I get that a lot of people aren't comfortable with this topic. But vulnerability is a necessary part of improvement. Dr. Sonia describes how to establish a “zone of sexual safety” so that women can get as comfortable as they need to be. When we can embrace vulnerability, we can make meaningful gains in whatever sexual issues we want to address. To create this safe setting, Dr. Sonia describes how to address topics of consent, emotional and physical safety, and desires. Sex is about pleasure, something everyone deserves. When this idea is prioritized, we can approach deeper issues. Homework for Women Physicians What can you do to address your own issues concerning sexuality? How can you help your patients feel more comfortable talking about their own? In This Episode The deficit that a lack of training in sex and sexuality creates [2:35] How to help patients get started on their journey [6:40] Getting comfortable with your journey of sexual self-discovery [11:50] Helping patients with a different libido than their partners [15:30] How sex drive changes over a lifetime [22:25] Quotes “As physicians, patients look to us to have an understanding about what to tell them about sex and sexuality. But we don't have the training and may be struggling with our own issues.” [3:39] “When you are comfortable with your own sexuality and you realize that it doesn't have to be perfect or the way society says it should be, then you make room to be able to talk to and help other people.” [6:22] “There's no concept of normal, but society wants there to be a normal amount in terms of libido.” [17:13] “We adapt exercise routines and our nutrition for our changing body. We need to adapt our concept of sex and sexuality as well as our body changes.” [22:51] Resources Mentioned Find Dr. Sonia Wright online Come as You Are by Emily Nagoski Learn more about accredited coaching with Dr. Amelia Bueche Find Dr. Amelia Bueche Online Follow Dr. Amelia Bueche on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative

Childhood trauma is often stored in our bodies, starting in the first year of our lives. It doesn't even have to be a hugely traumatic experience - it could even come from a child's mother. Dr. Aimie Apigian joins us to talk about how childhood trauma affects our long-term health conditions and how we can accelerate the healing process to reclaim our health. Biochemical Imbalances Caused by Genetics or Epigenetics Methylation Imbalance Copper & Zinc Pyrrole Disorder About Dr. Aimie Apigian Dr. Aimie is a Board-Certified Physician in Preventive Medicine and Addiction Medicine who specializes in recognizing and addressing the chronic effects of trauma on one's biology. After helping her foster-adopted son as he struggled with severe emotional and behavioral issues, she started to see how much of trauma is biology, not psychology. She earned her medical degree from Loma Linda University, has a Masters in Biochemistry, and a Masters in Public Health. 2 years into her general surgery residency, she went from running marathons and being an avid cyclist to severe fatigue, autoimmune issues, was overweight and depressed. Through her personal experiences, she has found we all live compromised due to stored trauma in our bodies. Talk therapy is not the answer. Dr. Amie's mission is to share with others the ways to accelerate the healing journey to consistent high states of health, aliveness, and performance through leveraging our own very survival, and reward pathways. Storing Childhood Trauma Dr. Amie Apigian shares her own personal experience with her adopted son to help explore her approach to trauma-informed therapy that focuses on our biology as well. Stored trauma often embeds in us before a child is 12 months old, even if that child hasn't had any traumatic experiences in life. But Amie explains how trauma can pass onto a child through its mother through attachment and subconscious signals. Even if the mother is experiencing stress in her day-to-day life, a baby can pick up on these queues and hold onto this as stored trauma. Of course, there are other ways of experiencing trauma that have even more of an impact. Childhood and stored trauma may not be something we notice as children or early adults, but as we age, we can develop chronic and long-term health conditions associated with this trauma. Breaking Trauma Cycles Amie talks about how our bodies can get stuck in a state of “freeze,” rather than fight or flight followed by relaxation. There's a common misconception that pegs all these responses together, but Amie explains the difference between sympathetic responses (fight or flight) and parasympathetic responses (freeze) and why it's essential to return to that state of calm instead of holding onto the stress. Amie explains how we can start to break these trauma cycles that start in childhood. Referencing her son, it is possible to start alleviating symptoms really quickly when the approach, support, and breakthroughs are just right. While there is a lot of benefit in talking therapy, yoga, and meditation, Amie explains why healing has to start at a biological level to address the root cause of the trauma. She says our bodies need that neuroplasticity to bounce back to our level state of stress. Did you experience trauma as a child that impacts your adult life? Do you think your long-term health conditions could connect back to incidents from when you were a child? Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “Whatever our pattern in our nervous system, if we came out of our childhood with any insecurities in our nervous system, subconsciously, even after our best attempts not to let our past influence our parenting, it's going to come out because trauma is not verbal.” [18:48] “Many, many people are living in what I call a chronic, functional freeze state. They've given up. They're just going through life living in a bit of a daze and have lost their fight and fire for life because it's been hard. Their nervous system has gotten to the point where it's running on fumes. This low energy state helps us survive, but not live.” [32:59] “When we look at these points in our biology that are holding our nervous system back from being able to process things, heal, and rewire itself, those are leverage points that we get to use to accelerate the healing journey.” [47:17] “There are clear leverage points in our biology that when you combine that then with the trauma therapies and somatic work working directly with your nervous system, you can feel that charge come up. You can feel the discharge. It shows up as heat or even trembling. Somatic trauma therapy is such powerful work. You can, in real-time, learn how to shift your own nervous system.” [48:11] In This Episode How childhood/stored trauma can cause disease later in life [8:00] How trauma gets stored in the body [9:00] The difference between parasympathetic and sympathetic responses [11:00] How to break attachment trauma cycles [21:00] Why our bodies need neuroplasticity [29:00] How to accelerate the healing journey [46:45] Links & Resources Get 10% Off Adrenal Calm with Code: CALM Watch “Why Attachment is the Future of Health” Learn About Trauma Accelerated Healing The Biology of Trauma Summit Biology of Trauma Certification Course Roadmap Neuro-Optimize For Aliveness Find Dr. Amie Apigian Online Follow Dr. Amie Apigian on Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 57: 5 Keys To Raising Healthy Kids With Dr. Brian Stenzler Episode 47: Improving Parasympathetic Tone For The Ans With Dr. Tim Jackson Episode 21: How Trauma Affects Your Health With Dr. Keesha Ewers
Is Dairy Good For Us? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBoxWe have no biological requirement for dairy, and yet, we've been told over and over again that this food is a great source of calcium and that milk makes healthy bones and we should drink it daily. However, the research shows that none of this is true. In fact, close to 70 percent of the world's population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products—a problem known as lactose intolerance. But even if you aren't lactose intolerant, consuming dairy can lead to weight gain, bloating, acne, gas, allergies, eczema, brittle bones, and sometimes even cancer. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses why he often works with patients to eliminate dairy in conversations with his colleagues Lisa Dreher and Dr. Elizabeth Boham. Through beautiful stories, Dr. Rao brings awareness to the negative internal talk we many times nourish in ourselves. “It's a self-reinforcing loop: the more you think about it, the deeper it becomes,” he says. The mental chatter influences how we relate, how we feel our experiences, and most importantly, how we create our reality. Mental health problems and stress affect everyone, before the pandemic hit, and certainly after. We all know the importance of developing healthy coping techniques and reducing our stress levels. But did you know it's equally important to instill these values in children, too? Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge joins me to talk about her work focused on helping parents and children develop healthy stress management skills from a young age. How to Mitigate and Support Your Nervous System in Ten Minutes a Day Intentful Breathwork Meditation Biofeedback About Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge Dr. Roseann is a mental health trailblazer, founder of The Global Institute of Children's Mental Health, and Dr. Roseann & Associates. She is, “Changing the way we view and treat children's mental health”. FORBES magazine called her, “A thought leader in children's mental health”. Her work has helped thousands of people reverse the most challenging conditions, such as ADHD, anxiety, mood, autism, learning disability, Lyme, and PANS/PANDAS using PROVEN holistic therapies such as neurofeedback, biofeedback, and psychotherapy. She is the author of the first-ever book on teletherapy activities for child and adolescent therapists, “Teletherapy Toolkit™️”, It's Gonna be OK!™️ book, and The Get Unstuck Program™️, which are resources for parents to reverse their child's symptoms. She is often featured on dozens of media outlets including Fox, CBS, NBC, FORBES, PARENTS, and New York Times. The Problem with Stress Dr. Roseann talks about how stress affects every single person living on this planet. It attacks our autonomic nervous system and has a truly detrimental impact on our entire body and health. Roseann's work focuses on children and how parents can help them learn how to cope with stress from a young age. Roseann explains what happens to each part of our bodies when we're under stress. While we know it's practically impossible to eradicate stress in your life, it is possible to learn how to reduce your stress levels and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Long-term and chronic stress is devastating for your body, so it's essential that you figure out ways to cope better. She urges the importance of developing these methods as an adult. By modeling appropriate behaviors for managing stress, parents can help instill these values and habits in their children, helping set them up for a more resilient life. Developing Healthy Coping Habits Roseann shares some habits to do every single day, such as breathwork and meditation, that can help reduce your stress levels. She encourages getting your kids involved, too, so they start building on these habits themselves. Another technique to model and help your children with is healthy problem-solving. Kids these days aren't learning how to solve problems, so it's our responsibility as parents to help them develop this skill. Moreso, we can encourage our children that it's okay to feel uncomfortable and vulnerable, that those feelings are important. Finally, we talk about how therapy is an essential practice for mental wellness. Roseann explains how teletherapy, phone-only therapy, is making talking therapy more accessible, which means that more and more people have access to mental health help. No one ever regrets going to therapy - only if they don't. If you think you or your children could benefit from talking therapy, please seek out a qualified therapist or teletherapist to help you. Or, call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “We have to change the way we view mental health. We have to change the way we're treating it. Everybody's mental health is worsening prior to the pandemic and certainly during the pandemic. We need to do something different. The basis of my work is to use evidence-based approaches which we are not doing in mental health.” [6:36] “Unless we intendedly practice ways to regulate our nervous system, that chronic stress has to have a physical outcome. You cannot live in a chronic stress state.” [9:04] “Our kids are not understanding how to problem solve. We need to teach kids and accept for ourselves that it is okay to be uncomfortable. We are supposed to be uncomfortable at times. That is our alert system. Emotions are uncomfortable. Anxiety, worry, sadness, grief: these are normal emotions. We have to experience them, deal with them, and move on.” [33:06] “Nobody ever regrets getting help. They only regret when they don't. If you have a child with any kind of mental health symptom, they're showing evidence of worry (stomach aches, headaches, cyclical night vomiters), go and get help. The longer these behaviors go on, the harder they are to unwind.” [40:05] In This Episode How stress affects our nervous system [7:30] What happens to your body under stress [11:00] How parents can build a resilient mindset in their children [31:15] The importance of teaching your children to problem solve and manage stress [37:30] How teletherapy can support mental health [38:30] Links & Resources Use Code CALM for 10% Off Adrenal Calm Get Your Free Gift: Over 100 Ways to Help Kids Tolerate Stress Find Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge Online Find The Global Institute of Children's Mental Health Online Follow Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn | Pinterest Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Brian Stenzler Episode 12: How To Build Children's Health With Food With Dr. Ana Maria Temple Episode 56: Top 2021 Longevity Tips Part I
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. As therapists, much of how we work with clients is informed by our own interests and the things that help us make sense of the world. With rates of cancer on the rise, how can you increase your odds of staying healthy? Today's guest shares his insight into how to detoxify your life to stay healthy for the long run. The six core causes of cancer are Chronic inflammation Elevated blood glucose Environmental toxins Stress Unhealthy diet Lifestyle behaviors About Nathan Crane Nathan Crane is an award-winning author, inspirational speaker, plant-based athlete, event producer, and 20x award-winning documentary filmmaker. Nathan is the Founder of The Panacea Community, Creator of the Global Cancer Symposium, Host of the Conquering Cancer Summit, and Director and Producer of the documentary film, “Cancer; The Integrative Perspective”. In 2005, at only 18 years old, Nathan began his health, healing, and spiritual journey, eventually overcoming a decade of brutal teenage addiction, house arrest, jail, and challenging times of homelessness to become an international author, filmmaker, and speaker dedicated to health, healing and conscious awakening. Nathan received numerous awards for his contribution to health, healing, and personal development including the Accolade Film Competition 2020's Outstanding Achievement Humanitarian Award and the Outstanding Community Service Award from the California Senate for his work in education and empowerment with natural and integrative methods for healing cancer. With more than 15 years in the health and wellness field, Nathan has reached millions of people around the world with his inspiring messages of hope, healing, and transformation. Why Cancer Is More Common than Ever Despite improvements in diagnosing and treatments, cancer levels are rising. Nathan explains why this is by tracing human health from before the industrial revolution to today. Once people began separating themselves from the natural world, diseases began to increase. Nathan breaks down the leading causes of cancer. These include being in a chronic state of inflammation, environmental toxins, stress, too much sugar, a bad diet, and certain lifestyle behaviors. While all these affect many of us, Nathan shares what we can do to counteract them. From reassessing what we eat to implementing stress-management techniques, there are measures we can all take to reduce the likelihood of having cancer. Reducing EMF Exposure Another less talked about, cause of cancer is exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). These are all around us but there are ways to mitigate exposure. Nathan recommends switching your phone to airplane mode at night and not carrying it on you as much as possible. He switches off his wifi router when not in use and even suggests turning off the breaker to your bedroom overnight. While taken all at once, this can seem overwhelming. That's not the point. Nathan suggests making incremental changes over time to improve your environment and hopefully reduce harmful exposure. What lifestyle and diet changes can you start implementing today? Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “When we started separating ourselves from nature and thinking that we are separate from and not unified with it in harmony, that is the point in which all diseases started to proliferate throughout human society.” [12:52] “We don't get cancer, we make cancer. There is usually more than one reason why we are making cancer.” [18:52] “You can really break cancer and most chronic diseases down into two things. It's either you're getting too much of what you don't need or you're not getting enough of what you do need.” [33:47] “Supplements are meant to supplement your already amazing diet. They're not meant to replace your poor diet.” [54:57] In This Episode How Nathan learned to live a loving spiritual life [2:04] Why cancer rates are on the rise [11:15] Methods for detoxing your home and body [30:30] Reducing your exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) [41:55] Avoiding mycotoxins in pet food [47:55] The best supplements to support the immune system [54:15] Links & Resources Why Antioxidants Are Important Wisdom of the Body Masterclass D3 5000 120 count D3 5000 60 count D3 + K2 D3 1000 Liquid D3 + K2 Liquid D3 D3 50,000 Find Nathan Crane online “Cancer; The Integrative Perspective” EMF Pollution Solutions Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 5: From Hodgkins to Healthmaker with Kylene Terhune

How does compassion impact life? This is something that Dr. Kristin Neff has spent years studying and has written several books about. She's specifically interested in self-compassion in women and why it is necessary for wellness. Listen as I do a bit of fan-girling and we talk about this very important topic. Dr. Kristin Neff is one of the world's leading experts on self-compassion. In fact, she was the first to operationally define and measure the construct. She has now also designed an 8-week course to help teach the skills necessary to develop healthy self-compassion both personally and professionally. But why is she so intrigued by this particular skill? She became very interested in the practice of Buddhism as she was going through her graduate program and self-compassion is one of the core tenets. After realizing that there wasn't a whole lot of scientific research about the construct of self-compassion, she took the field on. Listen as she shares the definition of self-compassion and why it's more important now than ever. She also delves into the place of self-compassion in a post-Me Too world and how you can start to work on being more compassionate to yourself today. “Women are socialized to be tender but not fierce and this is what can lead to things like inequality.” Dr. Kristin Neff In this episode: [02:49] Welcome to the show, Kristin! [04:29] Listen as she shares why she picked self-compassion as her words for today. [06:53] Kristin talks about an experience she had that inspired her to write about fierce self-compassion. [09:05] “It's all about the alleviation of suffering.” [11:25] She discusses authenticity and finding your self-compassion. [13:07] Kristin shares her definition of worthiness. [15:18] She speaks about finding a way to love ourselves. [17:01] Listen as she talks about her online course for medical professionals. [21:29] See the links below to check out her books. Chinese medicine is more than just treating health symptoms. It's bringing the body back into balance using lifestyle improvements, self-care and -respect practices, and nourishing our vitality. Brodie Welch joins me to talk about how she uses acupuncture, qi gong, and Chinese medicine to help high-achieving women start enjoying their lives again. How to Break Free of the Yang Make time for joy Make time for rest Make time for proper nourishment Rest your mind and observe where you're coming from Live from a place of balanced ease and balanced action Treat yourself with the same kindness you would treat someone else About Brodie Welch Brodie Welch is a Licensed Acupuncturist, board-certified herbalist, and self-care strategist. Brodie helps self-aware, high-achieving women break the cycle of stress, overwhelm, and self-sabotage so they can enjoy the lives they're working so hard to create, and truly embody self-respect. Working at the confluence of wellness and personal development, she helps thousands of clients optimize their weight, digestion, hormones, sleep, mood, and vitality. A lifelong student of consciousness, Brodie has been practicing meditation, yoga, and qi gong for over twenty years and holds teaching certifications in each of these disciplines. She synthesizes ancient techniques from Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and yoga with the latest research in neuroscience, functional medicine, and habit change to help her clients thrive. Her holistic self-care boot camp program “Level Up Your Life” helps women bridge the gap between what they know they should be doing to take care of themselves and actually doing it – without feeling guilty. She's the founder of Life in Balance Acupuncture in Corvallis, Oregon, where she has been treating patients since 2003. She's also the creator and host of A Healthy Curiosity: the podcast that explores what it takes to be well in a busy world. Prioritizing Yin Energy Brodie Welch explains how she uses Chinese medicine to help people of all ages reclaim their health and move in the direction of life and vitality. A big part of her work is helping her clients embrace the Yin side of their life as society obsesses over the Yang, more masculine, traits. As with everything on this planet, we, too, go through seasons and cycles. However, Western society encourages us to stay in our Yang energy, foregoing the season of winter. Brodie encourages you to embrace wintering: rest, rejuvenation, and rehabilitation. Brodie shares some of the ways to break free of our Yang addiction. By prioritizing rest, joy, and proper nourishment, we can start to reclaim the Ying in our life. Find Balance with Chinese Medicine It's all about finding that balance - but since we're so far into the Yang, we need to be intentional about our self-care and self-respect practices. Brodie shares how she differentiates self-care and self-respect, and how respecting yourself and showing yourself the same attention and care you would someone else is the best form of self-care there is. Chinese medicine is not just living intentionally - though that is a big part of it. It's also practicing qi gong, acupuncture, meditation, and embracing herbal remedies. The very nature of Chinese medicine helps reduce stress levels and softens some of the more uncomfortable symptoms of menopause and peri-menopause. How can you find the Yin-Yang balance in your life? What Yin practices will you start incorporating? Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “There are all these different ways that we use to restore balance to the body. Chinese medicine, at its core, is really applied philosophy. You can make a choice every day to live in a more Yin way or a more Yang way.” [6:43] “Health isn't just the absence of disease. It's nourishing our vitality. It's living in accordance with who we really are. There's this consciousness dimension of things. We need to make sure that we are in alignment, that we are living in energy integrity and not dipping into our energy reserve.” [12:03] “In Chinese medicine, we can see things coming before they actually manifest. We can take someone's pulse and sense an imbalance before it shows up. We can look at the signs and symptoms that will affect an organ to see that if it's not addressed, it will get worse. The most potent force in life that we have to work with is what we do with our time. What we do each and every day makes so much more of a difference than what any practitioner of any stripe can do for you in an office.” [19:06] “I think qi gong is one of the most powerful self-healing practices people can ever learn. It's so accessible, whereas yoga can be really daunting to people. As we think about aging, ways of staying supple and flexible, reducing falls, improving bone density, and quality of life. There are so many studies on qi gong as being super effective in helping people maintain their health throughout their lives.” [33:29] In This Episode What Chinese medicine is [4:00] Why we need to recognize and participate in the season or wintering [8:45] Why it's difficult to opt-out of the Yang culture that permeates Western culture [15:00] What practices to adopt to break free of Yang addiction [16:15] The link between self-care and self-respect [18:15] How Chinese medicine treats stress [22:15] How to move your life in the direction of life rather than imbalance [28:00] What acupuncture is and how it impacts your health and body [29:00] Links & Resources Use Code CALM for 10% Off Adrenal Calm Download the Calm & Centered Bundle Download the Manifesto Brodie's Signature Program, Level Up Your Life Listen to A Healthy Curiosity On Facebook On Apple Podcasts Find Brodie Welch Online Follow Brodie Welch on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 53: Keto Green Approach To Hormones With Dr. Anna Cabeca Episode 51: Brilliant Menopause Secrets With Dr. Kyrin Dunston Episode 57: 5 Keys To Raising Healthy Kids With Dr. Brian Stenzler

Dr. Brandy L. Simula explains how pandemic burnout is still very much with us and that it's important for us to give ourselves space to be human as opposed to expecting ourselves to show up fully--with 100% effort and totally on top of it--in everything we do. She explains how to make choices about what we put full effort into and what we don't, how to acknowledge to ourselves and others that life is often messy and hard, and to connect to people that can support us as we navigate the challenges of being human in the midst of a pandemic. Brandy also discusses her own career pivot and the moment she realized academia did not offer her the life she wanted--that it was too much of a sacrifice to continue down that path. How Food Can Cause And Heal Disease | This episode is sponsored by InsideTrackerThe food we eat literally serves as information, instructions, or code that controls almost every function of the body—including our hormones, appetite, brain chemistry, immune system, gene expression, and even the microbiome. Our diets are the main driver of the chronic disease epidemic we are experiencing today. But food is also the most powerful medicine available to heal chronic disease, which will account for over 50 million deaths and cost the global economy $47 trillion by 2030. This is because the foods you eat are the keystrokes that send messages to your genes with every bite, telling them what to do—creating health or disease. What you put at the end of your fork is a more powerful medicine than anything you will find at the bottom of a pill bottle. In this miniepisode, Dr. Hyman speak with Dr. Josh Axe and Dr. William Li about eating to create health and how nature has an intelligent way of showing us how to use food as medicineDr. Josh Axe is a certified doctor of natural medicine, a doctor of chiropractic, and a clinical nutritionist with a passion to help people get healthy by empowering them to use nutrition to fuel their health. He is the bestselling author of Keto Diet, Eat Dirt, and Collagen Diet and author of the book Ancient Remedies. He is also the co-founder of Ancient Nutrition, which provides protein powders, holistic supplements, vitamins, essential oils and more to the modern world. Dr. Axe founded the natural health website DrAxe.com, one of the top natural health websites in the world today.Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of one of my favorite books, the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking work has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments and impacted care for more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. Dr. Li has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, CNBC, Live with Kelly & Ryan and the Dr. Oz Show, and he has been featured in USA Today, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, Parade and O Magazine. Losing weight is difficult in our American society. We face constant temptation no matter where we are. Dr. Siobhan Key joins me to talk about breaking up with the American diet and creating sustainable, lifelong weight loss. Small, Sustainable Changes to Boost Weight Loss Reduce your fat intake Do a longer fast in the morning Focus on listening to your hunger and satiety signals About Dr. Siobhan Key Dr. Siobhan Key is a Certified Life & Weight Loss Coach, an expert in emotional and binge eating, and a practicing Obesity Medicine Physician. She is the host of the internationally renowned Weight Solutions for Physicians Podcast and helps physicians across the globe manage stress and lose weight. Siobhan is passionate about helping physicians who struggle with stress or binge eating. She helps her clients go from feeling overwhelmed and ashamed of their eating to be confident in their ability to lose weight and find peace from the constant brain chatter around food. The Intersection of Weight Loss and Life Coaching Dr. Siobhan Key talks about her own experience with weight loss. She explains how she knew the science behind it, but still found herself giving in to some of the food urges and desires she knew wouldn't make her feel good. But her approach changed when she discovered the intersection of weight loss and life coaching. Delving into the psychological reasons behind weight loss was the catalyst Siobhan needed for herself, and it's now something she works with her clients on, too. The second piece for weight loss is that you need to completely detach yourself from the average American way of eating. Our society relies on fast food, deep-fried, and sugar-laden foods. Overall, it doesn't lead to a healthy diet or one conducive to weight loss. Weight Loss for Life Siobhan explains the secret to losing weight for good: Find a way of eating that works for you that are sustainable in the long term. The key is finding an eating plan that you can and will stick to for the rest of your life. The key is in finding that sustainable plan. Part of this search will include figuring out what foods don't make you feel good. When you reframe, for example, that you don't binge on a bag of chips because of the added calories, but instead because you don't feel good the next day, it's so much easier not to eat them. Finally, we talk about those dreaded weight loss plateaus. Siobhan asks us to look at our plateaus logically and ask: have we actually stopped losing weight? How do our clothes fit? She also talks us through some of the reasons our weight loss maybe has slowed. Homework for Women Physicians Have you found a sustainable way of eating you can stick to for life? What foods need to keep a place in your everyday diet? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why the combination of obesity medicine and life coaching works [6:15] How to disconnect with the normal American diet [7:30] How to lose weight for good [8:45] What happens when you reframe your approach to why you don't eat certain foods [18:30] How to approach a weight loss plateau [23:00] Quotes “There has to be a better way. We have to actually know more about weight loss than what I was taught. I started studying obesity medicine and working on my own weight, and that helped. I did lose about half of my weight doing that. But there was still this element. I believed in lower carb eating, I knew it worked well for my body, I knew if I followed it consistently, it worked. Yet, there were still these inconsistencies. Still, these were times where I would find myself eating the food I knew didn't work for my body and I felt powerless to stop eating it. I needed other tools and that's ultimately how I found the life coaching.” [5:37] “I believe that if you're doing this, you need to create yourself a customized approach that works for you, your preferences, your life, and your body. And that feels good. If it feels hard, takes work, or a ton of effort, it's probably not going to be sustainable. There will come a day when you won't have the energy to put into that. Design a custom way of approaching weight loss, let it not be perfect, and know that it can be imperfect and still be effective. It just has to be consistent.” [10:36] “It doesn't have to be a big investment in time. You don't have to take a couple of hours for yourself every single day. Giving yourself permission to have some moments to yourself every single day to give yourself what you need at that moment can make a difference to your eating habits.” [21:47] Resources Mentioned Listen to Weight Solutions for Physicians Podcast Find Dr. Siobhan Key Online Follow Dr. Siobhan Key on Facebook | Instagram Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 67: Scale Myths with Coach Missy Episode 57: Dr. Stierman on Breaking Up with the Scale Episode 54: Dr. Monica Milas on Transformation Through 100 lb Weight Loss
Your skin is a direct reflection of what's going on inside your body. Hormonal imbalances, deficiencies, and inflammation can all show up on your skin. Dr. Trevor Cates joins me to talk about how our internal health shows up on our skin, what the six root causes of our skin issues could be, and why we need to simplify our skincare routine. The 6 Root Causes Behind Skin Issues Inflammation Nutritional Deficiencies Hormonal Imbalances Blood Sugar Imbalances Oxidative Damage Microbiome Imbalances About Dr. Trevor Cates Dr. Trevor Cates is author of the USA Today and Amazon bestselling book Clean Skin From Within and founder of The Spa Dr. natural skincare line. She received her medical degree from the National University of Natural Medicine and was the first woman licensed as a naturopathic doctor in the state of California. She currently lives in Park City, Utah where she helps patients from around the world achieve naturally glowing skin. She has been on various TV shows, including The Doctors and Extra TV. Dr. Cates interviews over 250 experts on The Spa Dr. podcast and hosted her own PBS special, Younger Skin From Within. She believes the key to healthy skin is inner and outer nourishment with natural and non-toxic ingredients. Redefining Skincare from the Inside Out Dr. Trevor Cates explains how our internal health shows up on our skin and what the six root causes of your skin issues could be. She's also redefining the skin types we've grown up with to five new categories that are much more inclusive of skin problems. Trevor believes that if we focus on four main lifestyle changes, we can improve not only our skin health but our overall health, too. By focusing on our diet, our exercise, and our mental health, we can revolutionize skincare. Diet can be a huge trigger for your skin. Trevor explains what foods you should avoid, especially if you have skin issues, and what you should load your plate up with. We both agree that our plates should be full of a rainbow of vegetables. Organic Skincare If you have dry skin, Trevor explains why it's not enough to drink a glass of tap water. Most tap water filters out so many vital vitamins and nutrients, leaving our body crying out for hydration. Trevor recommends drinking filtered water. Trevor also recommends eating organic and using organic skincare and other beauty products. She explains what organic means in the skincare industry and why some ingredients are harder, or impossible, to source organically. Finally, we talk about Trevor's own skincare range. It's so simple with so few ingredients but over the years, we've overly complicated skincare. Simple and organic is better. Get colors in your diet. What are your favorite rainbow foods? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “It's not that certain foods don't have some nutritional value, it's just that they have become a big trigger for a lot of people. Sometimes the body just needs a break from them. Some people can eliminate certain foods for a period of time and work on the cut microbiome and gut health and then maybe go back to eating those foods. We first need to get rid of some of these triggers and give the body a break.” [17:24] “I'm really surprised what people try to get away with at companies. What they will or won't put on the labels and what they consider marketing versus what's truly ethical. They don't always keep you safe.” [24:43] “Sometimes it's hard for people to believe how easy skincare can be. I really think we overcomplicate skincare.” [32:59] “I encourage people to remember the four different areas: clean plate, clean slate, clean body, clean mind. Those are all really important for longevity. If you can do one of these every day, it doesn't have to take a lot of time, it's really those daily lifestyle choices that we make.” [34:27] In This Episode How your skin reflects your inner health [4:30] The 5 new redefined skin types [7:00] What lifestyle changes you can make to improve your skin health [14:30] What foods you should and shouldn't eat [15:30] Why drinking a glass of water isn't enough for hydrating your skin [20:15] What organic means in the skincare industry [25:15] What a thorough skincare routine might look like [31:00] Links & Resources Use Code BERBERINE for 10% off Berberine Support Use Code drgray20 for 20% Off at The Spa Dr. Store Body Essentials Daily Essentials Pearl and Rose Petal Exfoliant Find Out Your Skin Personality Type Find Dr. Trevor Cates Online Follow Dr. Trevor Cates on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | Pinterest Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Anna Cabeca Episode 41: How To Reduce Toxins In The Home With Genevieve White Episode 31: Gut/Brain Connection With Dr. Lauryn Lax

We liked this episode so much we're releasing it again! In 2017 when Amy picked 20 minutes as her minimum daily outdoor time, she based that decision on some research she read in passing that said 20 minutes is enough time to spend outside and see health benefits from doing so. But Amy isn't a social scientist or a scientific researcher, so her choice of 20 minutes wasn't overly scientific either. That and every other outdoor decision she's made is just based on gut. So was she right? Has her outdoor experiment been aimed at the right thing -- or has she been wasting her life on the wrong timing and wrong activities? In this episode we bring in an actual outdoor experience researcher and scientist, Dr. Kathleen Wolf, to weigh-in on not just what the research says about what Amy is doing, but on how everyone can get the most out of their own time in nature. Living intentionally is about being present in the moment, eating food that feels good, and taking mental health breaks. Abel James, The Fat-Burning Man, joins me to talk about intentional living, everyday habits, and why he believes intermittent fasting is the best way to eat. Daily Practices for Stress Reduction and Resilience Breathing for 5-10 minutes Writing to take yourself out of the moment Practicing gratitude Being more intentional Giving yourself mental breaks About Abel James Abel James is a New York Times Bestselling Author, musician, and creator of the hit podcast, “Fat-Burning Man.” His new book and audiobook entitled “Designer Babies Still Get Scabies,” a #1 International Bestseller in Humor, is available now. Nutrition and Intentional Living Abel James joins me to talk about making nutrition work for you in a very intentional way. Nutrition is more than following “the rules,” but finding what works best for your body and sticking to that. For Abel, though, there are some food items that he does cut out of his diet. He also believes that intermittent fasting is the best way to make your body feel good. Abel says he goes as long without eating as possible as he finds once you break your fast, you will get hungry again soon. He explains why fasting works so well for so many people. But living an intentional life is more than what you're eating. Abel knows firsthand how trauma and triggering events can impact your entire life - your habits and stress levels - even your desire to eat. The Problem with Social Media Some of the habits that Abel implemented were creating and sticking to daily practices. He gives quite a few examples, but his top tip is to breathe intentionally for 5-10 minutes every single day. This practice helps you return to the moment while stabilizing your stress levels - it's also great for your autonomic nervous system. Abel is also passionate about reducing his time spent on technology, especially social media. While social media has had a really positive impact on our lives and relationships, the habit of checking in regularly takes us out of the moment. Abel explains how destructive social media addiction is, but acknowledges that it's often a necessary evil as a business owner. Abel gives some great tips for navigating social media with as much intention as you can, from shadowbans to conscious consumption. How is your relationship with social media? Do you schedule a time where you intentionally don't use it? Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “When you let the body do what it's supposed to do and you get out of its way, you are meant to feel incredible.” [4:05] “When we go through something traumatic, it's important to realize that we're social animals and if you tried to isolate because of the pain or you tried to keep it from other people, it's really not serving anybody. It's important that we all try to work through this and show our vulnerabilities to the people around us. And, be willing to accept help from people. That exchange can be really difficult, especially for the Type A, working all the time go-getter, but I think it's important that people hear that.” [20:52] “Vitamin D is like the sun. We know we should go out and get some sun, get some vitamin D, but it's not the sexiest thing ever. I think that it's important that people realize it doesn't have to be. A lot of times health is doing those boring things.” [46:48] In This Episode What nutrition habits you should adopt [8:30] Why fasting works so well for so many people [11:15] How trauma and triggering events can help you reframe your thoughts [22:30] Strategies for stress reduction and resilience [25:00] The problem with social media and the internet, especially to your relationships [30:00] How to navigate social media as a creator and as a consumer [44:00] Links & Resources Read About Why Antioxidants are Important and Get 10% Off Mitochondrial Complex with Code ENERGY Take the Your Longevity Blueprint Course & Get Your First Consult with Me Free Use Code wild15 for 15% Off Wild Superfoods Supplements The Fat-Burning Man Show with Abel James Find Abel James Online Follow Abel James on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | Pinterest Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 11: Intermittent Fasting Truths With Cynthia Thurlow Episode 35: Happiness: The Missing Ingredient In Health With Margie Bissinger Episode 34: How To Better Your Am Routine With Jane Hogan
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Watching reality tv shows are one of my favorite pastimes. It's been really interesting to see how programming in this space has developed over time and to follow the commentary. And what has been most interesting is the way the space has been accommodating, or not so much, to Black women cast members and Black audiences. To help us explore this world, today I'm joined by Dr. Racquel Gates. Dr. Gates and I chatted about the complicated nature of Black women's representation on reality tv, how audiences often respond to majority Black casts, the stereotypes that are both upheld and dispelled through reality tv, and the changes that often happen between season 1 and 2 of a show. How Eating An Anti-Inflammatory Diet Is Key To Regaining Your Health | This episode is brought to you by InsideTrackerInflammation is part of the body's natural defense system and can be a good thing in balance. However, when your immune system shifts out of balance, inflammation can run rampant—causing a chronic, smoldering fire inside your body that contributes to disease, weight gain, and more. What we eat is one of the biggest levers we have when it comes to driving or reducing inflammation. Industrial food drives inflammation, oxidative stress, hormone and neurotransmitter imbalances, overloads your detoxification system, depletes your energy, damages your microbiome, and changes your gene expression to turn on disease-causing genes. Real whole nutrient and phytonutrient-rich food does the opposite. It turns off inflammation, increases antioxidant systems, balances hormones and brain chemistry, boosts detoxification, increases energy, optimizes your microbiome, and turns on disease-preventing, health-promoting genes. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Vani Hari and Dr. David Perlmutter about the dangers of inflammatory foods and how to eat a diet that is anti-inflammatory.Named as one of the “Most Influential People on the Internet” by Time Magazine, Vani Hari is the revolutionary food activist behind foodbabe.com, co-founder of organic food brand Truvani, New York Times best selling author of, The Food Babe Way, and Feeding You Lies. She has led campaigns against food giants like Kraft, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Subway and General Mills that attracted more than 500,000 signatures, and led to the removal of several controversial ingredients used by these companies. Through corporate activism, petitions, and social media campaigns, Vani and her Food Babe Army have become one of the most powerful populist forces in the health and food industries. Her drive to change the food system inspired the creation of her new company, Truvani, where she produces real food without added chemicals, products without toxins, and labels without lies. Vani has been profiled in the New York Times and The Atlantic, and has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, CNN, The Dr. Oz Show, The Doctors, and NPR. Dr. David Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist and four-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Archives of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and The Journal of Applied Nutrition. His books have been published in 34 languages and include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. Dr. Perlmutter's new book Brain Wash, co-written with his son Austin Perlmutter, MD, was released in January 2020.This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker.
