A psychotherapist and hit podcaster brings empathy and humor to her first book, a radical reimagining of the self-help genre that teaches listeners how to “process their emotional sh*t,” let it go, and enjoy the life they're livingAfter suffering through her own cycle of tragedy, suppressed emotion, professional study, therapy, and eventual breakthrough, Rachel Kaplan knows from experience that many of us avoid actually feeling our feelings. Instead, we store them in a kind of emotional constipation, chasing distraction, addiction, consumption, and other forms of suppression. The only way to heal from traumatic experiences and difficult feelings, to live healthier and happier lives, is to move the emotions through our bodies—to let that sh*t go.Heal, Feel, and Let That Sh*t Go is a revolutionary and irreverent approach to personal transformation and self-care that teaches listeners precisely how to (and why they should) feel emotions to move them through the body as nature intended. Kaplan calls this modality “emotional potty training,” and the revolutionary community she's nurturing, the Feelings Movement. Her approach helps listeners heal themselves deep down, eliminate doubt about their own self-worth and value, and importantly, enjoy the journey. To accomplish this, Kaplan guides listeners to:reconnect and reintegrate with their younger selves who suppressed emotion because they needed connection and approval from parents in order to surviveaccess the inner pain resulting from the experience of feeling unlovable and other traumas that were not emotionally processed at the timeengage in self-care practices and step-by-step physical and mental exercises to work through and release these pent-up feelingsRestoring the ability to process emotion is the only effective means for reducing our backlog of emotional pain, establishing a baseline of well-being and self-trust, and overcoming the debilitating effects of core wounds, chronic stress, depression, and misery. By letting that sh*t go, listeners can enjoy the life they're living and know their worth, no matter what.Rachel Kaplan, MA, MFT, is a licensed psychotherapist, mental-health educator, and author of “Feel Your Feelings: the Healing Power of Letting That Sh*t Go,” forthcoming from New World Library in late October 2024. She emphasized that simply thinking about these parts is not enough, and instead, suggested reflecting on what one's parents didn't like about them and what they fear showing to others. Rachel proposed tracking these parts throughout the day, checking in with them, and shaping one's life around them to make them feel loved and cared for. She also noted that these parts often come alive with pain and that learning to feel and process this pain is crucial for personal growth. Rachel discussed emotional release work, which involves learning to manage one's feelings responsibly. She emphasized the importance of creating a proactive practice to connect with emotions and move them rather than waiting for life events to trigger them. Rachel also mentioned the need to physically amplify one's capacity to handle anger, sadness, fear, and shame. She suggested setting aside time for this practice, like going to the gym or doing yoga. Rachel and the doctor discuss the importance of integrating and accepting the wounded parts of oneself with love and kindness. Rachel emphasizes allowing those parts to fully express their pain and emotions in a safe space, followed by reality testing to gain perspective, self-care, and moving forward as an integrated adult self. The key is bridging the resourced adult self with the parts desperately needing love and approval, not letting the wounded child parts take over but healing them through this process of acceptance and integration. Dr. and Rachel discussed the emotional release process and the importance of privately acknowledging and letting go of emotions before sharing them with others. They emphasized the need to assess when it's appropriate to express feelings and when it's necessary to let them go privately. Rachel also highlighted the importance of not judging emotions as good or bad but understanding their messages and allowing oneself to feel pain as a natural part of being human. She encouraged people to become skilled at emotional release to feel better and more resilient.

Wellness expert Heather Grzych interviews Rachel Kaplan, a licensed psychotherapist, TEDx speaker, and author of Feel, Heal & Let That Sh*t Go, about emotional resilience, personal growth, and the complexities of healing. In this episode of The Gently Used Human podcast, Dr. Scott Lyons sits down with psychotherapist and author Rachel Kaplan to explore her unique and powerful approach to emotional healing. Rachel is a psychotherapist, emotional educator, and host of the Healing Feeling Sht Show* podcast. She's also the author of the amazing book Feel, Heal, and Let That Sht Go*, which introduces the concept of “emotional potty training” — and yes, it's exactly as clever and transformative as it sounds. Rachel's method encourages us to reconnect with our feelings, process them in real time, and ultimately release the emotional backlog that so many of us have built up over the years. Rachel dives into the idea that just as we learned to manage our physical needs as children, we need to "train" ourselves to process emotions in a healthy way. With humor and a relatable perspective, she explains how most of us were taught to repress our emotions early on, leading to what she calls "emotional constipation." This buildup of unprocessed pain and feelings can manifest in our lives as stress, numbness, or even physical illness.Dr. Lyons shares his own experiences of struggling to fully feel emotions, resonating deeply with Rachel's insights on how avoiding feelings leads to greater suffering. Together, they discuss practical tools for releasing emotions, including how to "schedule" emotional release and why it's essential to be with our emotions, rather than intellectualizing or bypassing them. This conversation is filled with humor, wisdom, and practical guidance for anyone who feels emotionally stuck, numb, or overwhelmed. It's about learning to move toward discomfort, release emotional baggage, and cultivate a deeper, more compassionate relationship with ourselves. This episode is perfect for anyone seeking more emotional balance and resilience, and it will leave you inspired to reconnect with the parts of yourself you may have hidden away for too long.Topics We Break DownHow decades of unprocessed emotions affect our physical and mental health, and how to begin releasing them. The importance of reintegrating the parts of ourselves that we've hidden away and learning to let them express their pain.Dr. Lyons and Rachel explore why repressing emotions leads to greater suffering, and how facing them head-on can lead to lasting relief. How to schedule emotional release sessions, and techniques to allow emotions to move through the body naturally. Why healing isn't just about trauma recovery, but about creating a sustainable relationship with your emotions so you can face life's challenges with strength.

EP #290 - Unshakably Well - An Interview with author and psychotherapist, Rachel Kaplan I truly love my job. I get to meet so many interesting and fascinating people. I am thrilled to welcome Rachel Kaplan to Empowering Chats. Rachel is a psychotherapist and the author of “Feel, Heal & Let That Shit Go.” At the tender age of 14 Rachel experienced great trauma when the boy she fell in love with took his life. In her words, she became dead inside and did not know how to process her grief and trauma so she shifted into her very active brain, ignoring her emotions. Then at the age of 16 she started therapy but did not reach full -fledged healing until she reached 18. That is when she knew she wanted to be a therapist. It took her until she hit 37 before she felt like her baseline of self-love was enough. And this was after she had already been a therapist for 10 years. Rachel wrote this book in order to help others work through the necessary pieces that can make the difference between compensating for their emotional wounds and learning how to break that cycle and get to a place of well-being, so that they have a baseline of self-love. In Rachel's words, “I did this book because I didn't want this to take others as long as it took me.” There is such a difference between feeling unshakably well and looking okay. Rachel feels there is a lack of understanding in the therapy world and most people at best are managing a part of themselves that feels very unlovable. According to Rachel, emotions are clusters of sensations that signal something to us, but no one really taught us how to work with those and how to let the emotions flow through our body. We were conditioned out of our feelings. And many of us eat, smoke, go shopping, distract ourselves or find other ways to not deal with our pain and our emotions. Life is for living and it includes feeling your emotions and allowing them to pass through you so you can process and move on. Probably our funniest and shittiest show yet! And when we say, “shitty” we mean in the way it feels to deal with our emotions sometimes. This week, Sheva and Noam are joined by a new friend, Rachel Kaplan- a Bay Area based psychotherapist with a private practice and really cool podcast. In this episode we discuss: The journey towards healing; What it's like to adults to have feelings and move through them; The interplay between anger and shame; and the difference between feelings as farts and shits. We had to get a little childish for such a grown up topic as emotions : ) Stick around past the contact details at the end of the episode for a related Jewish lesson- we finally got it in! You can always find Rachel at healingfeelingshitshow.com. And yourcorewound.com for a brief emotional assessment. How do you feel your emotions? Where do you usually carry them? What are you triggers? How do you process and move through your emotions in healthy ways? "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, Our presence automatically liberates others." (Marianne Williamson) A Prayer for the Gift of the Body (The Bathroom Prayer) Blessed are You, Adonai, Our Teacher, whose presence is felt throughout the cosmos, who formed human beings with wisdom and created within us many openings arteries, glands, and organs, marvelous in structure, intricate in design. Should but one of them fail to function by being blocked or opened, it would be impossible to survive and to serve You. Blessed are You, Adonai, who heals all flesh and acts wondrously.

With 7 weeks to go until the Weston A. Price Foundation's 2012 Wise Traditions conference, The Appropriate Omnivore continues its series of Wise Traditions speakers. The speaker for this episode is Rachel Kaplan, co-author of the book Urban Homesteading: Heirloom Skills for Sustainable Living. Just what is urban homesteading? Rachel explains how urban homesteading applies to food and to an overall lifestyle. She talks about how she balances being an urban homesteader, giving lectures and writing about it, while also working a full time job as a marriage and family therapist.
Rachel Kaplan describes the Urban Homesteading Movement as a food movement, but also a movement of people, who are about conservation of energy, water, and waste. It is a movement of learning to live with less impact on the earth, and with a greater sense of what it means to be part of the place where we live, and to be thinking ecologically.Tags: Rachel Kaplan, compost, composting, gardening, garden, earth worms, dirt, water, composting toilets, chickens, natural building, bamboo, community, environment, nature, cohousing, interdependence, farms, farming, farmers, Animals, Community, Ecology/Nature/Environment, Family/Community, Social Change/Politics
Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast Gianaclis Caldwell is the author of a modern classic on cheese production, Mastering Artisan Cheesemaking from Chelsea Green Publishing, and her new book to help get anyone started, Mastering Basic Cheesemaking from New Society Publishers. These books and her expertise form the basis for our conversation today about animal cheeses, whether you start with goat, sheep, or cow milk. I dive in with all my questions about starting supplies; expected yields; soft versus hard cheeses; the different types of cheese; and an exploration of rennet, including three types to look for and one to avoid. As Gianaclis joined me previously for Episode 1724 - Holistic Goat Care, we begin with a brief overview of her background and then get cheesy. Find out more about her and her books at gianacliscaldwell.com. -- As you heard during this conversation, I'm really inspired by people like Gianaclis that take these ideas that at first seem so complex, and break down the mystery into easy steps we can follow. Sure, we might make mistakes or have some failures, but we can take what we learn and try again. Using what she shares with us, we can start with a $4 gallon of store bought commercial cow milk and make our first pound of cheese. If we want, then we can seek out grass-fed organic or raw milk, try sheep or goat milk, and see how that changes what we get. But if we don't want to, we never have to. We can keep using that same grocery store jug while still getting something better than store bought. Though I haven't made my own cheese yet, as my children look at me with that “Dad? Really?” look every time I bring it up, I feel comfortable and confident that when we do get to it, we'll wind up with not only some great cheese but also a fond memory. Those experiences are the ones we need to create the world we want to live in, and so I encourage each of you to keep playing, in the kitchen, in the garden, field, and forest, to find those moments that speak to you, add to your set of skills, and help you to be who you are called to. My guest today is Rachel Kaplan a member of 13 Moon Collaborative and co-author of an excellent book on practicing permaculture in cities and suburbs, Urban Homesteading. This conversation centers around her work with the collaborative and how to foster permaculture people, not just permaculture landscapes. This is more than permaculture as a design practice, but as an embodiment of all the pieces that make permaculture what it has become, a way to live in an ecologically sound way. If you would like to join the next session of the Permaculture from the Inside Out Design Course, classes start March 19, 2016, and you can find more information at https://13MoonCollaborative.com Stepping away from this interview, I find my view on the idea of Zone 00 changing. For a long time I rejected the idea of the personal work, of the inner landscape, because it skirted the line of spirituality and woo a bit too much for my taste, because the presentations of the idea of Zone 00 were couched in language more mystical than mundane. Studying the American Civil Rights Movement and other non-violent movements, however, showed that transformation begins with the self before the physical manifestation in the world. In some cases, like the Salt March lead by Ghandi, can take 15 years of personal growth and preparation. Those stories are too often left out of the history books and so we only see the end results. Not the beginning. For us to create a more bountiful world we need to address that inner landscape to know our heart's desire, understand our calling, and to heal so that we can heal the world. By taking care of ourselves, we can practice permaculture from the inside out. Wherever you are on your journey, whatever you are doing whether you are a new student, a teacher, or a small business owner, the door remains open if there is some way I can assist you. As this episode comes out everyone at Seppi's Place is falling into what life is like when the people you share space with are not roommates, but members of your community. In our case this means a more egalitarian approach to living. We share food, drink, and other items in the common area. I am now the self-designated snack-master, picking up the handful of things, like chips and icecream, that we all enjoy, but do not as of yet make onsite. With the dissolution of my marriage and this move, I'm happy to say that my children have also come and spent time here, ready to return at a moment's notice. Their mother, my unwife, has had dinner here and shared the space at Seppi's Place with our children and my roommates. I continue to spend time at her house with them, and remain an integral part of our family. If you are interested and want to know more about this process of unmarrying, as opposed to divorce, let me know and I can put together an episode to talk about the process of how my former spouse and I ended our marriage in order to save our family. As I say my door is always open and that includes being here to help beyond the umbrella of permaculture. Let me know if I can help you. In any way. Until the next time spend each day creating the world you want to live in by taking care of Earth, yourself, and each other. This episode is an interview with Taj Scicluna, the Perma Pixie, about her development of a permaculture business, and the work required to be a small business owner. Along the way we also talk about education, and some of the differences between Australian and American training, including the work to formalize the permaculture design certificate. You can find out more about Taj and her work at ThePermaPixie.com, which includes her calendar, blog, videos, and lots of other information. What I like about this conversation is hearing that there is a movement afoot in the world to take this work of permaculture and find ways to make it more available and accessible through existing systems. To professionalize our practices. To provide opportunities that help fund education and make permaculture more accessible through programs that already exist. Another piece of this is Taj's sharing of a potential 4th ethic, the ethic of transition. I like this idea, and am considering including it in my own practices, as it continues the thread discussing the space between personal responsibility and the systemic issues we face within the culture we come from that extends directly into the practice of permaculture. Though we might encapsulate this in the existing strategy of appropriate technology, I find that this stands stronger as an ethic, because it provides a place to work through the world we live in at the moment, so we can build the framework of the world we want to live in. In that, each of us have choices to make. What will we use from the old system to build the new? For some that includes formal education in the university model as it stands. To others that means accepting an informal process that provides different opportunities. In permaculture, that could be embracing the Mollisonian approach to a Permaculture Design Course, underneath the umbrella of a group like PRI or PINA, while others are creating new programs that deliver the similar content in a different way that includes things like new Ethics or principles that build on the earlier material, or focused on a particular subset of the community such as activists or community organizers. Others still might live in the gift while others use capitalism. While one rejects flying another might use flight as a way to teach the world. Live without computers or electricity as a model for others, or embrace these technologies to share those ideas with the world. In making these choices, deciding how to move forward as individuals, we need to start talking about what we are doing as a community, inside and outside of permaculture. What works? What doesn't? Where do we feel included? Where do we feel excluded? How are we our own worst enemies? Is organizing formally drawing you in to do more? Or are you feeling rejected because of the emerging structures? Where do you see examples of racism? Sexism? Where can we be allies to one another and come together to make a real and lasting difference? You are not alone. I am not alone. We're all in this together. Let's work on making the world a more bountiful place. If there is anyway I can help, get in touch. Email: The Permaculture Podcast Phone: Or, if you want, send me a letter. The Permaculture Podcast The Permaculture Podcast From here the next interview is with Rachel Kaplan of the 13 Moon Collaborative, and after that Jerome Osentowski from Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture joins me to talk about his book The Forest Garden Greenhouse. Now a quick update behind the scenes of the show. I'm back from The Possibility Alliance and it was an incredible time. Ethan and I recorded over 14 hours of raw audio, 10 hours of video, and I took nearly 1,000 photographs, many of various documents detailing the various ideas at the PA, and dozens of pages of notes. The editing, sorting, and sifting have begun to bring the book into reality, and I'm leaving early access to the book and the ability for listeners to pledge to the project open. Find out more at: The Possibility Handbook I am also now setup and operating from Seppi's place and am integrating into this space. Alongside Seppi, our collective four children, and our other housemate Eric, we are learning what it means to live in community, not just as roommates or people who share space. Already, in less than a week, rituals, roles, and schedules are emerging that mutually support one another. It's interesting to live with, for, and alongside other people, as opposed to just sharing space. Like tonight, as this episode goes out, I'm making a pasta dinner for everyone in our community, along with my unwife joining us as well. Moving forward with producing the podcast, working on the book, and living with Seppi and the other cast of characters, I'll continue to add updates and experiences like this to the show. You can always find the latest and greatest in each new episode. Which will finally bring this episode to a close. All my best to you. Until the next time, spend each day creating the world you want to live in by taking care of Earth, yourself, and each other. This episode is a look back over 2014 and the guests that garnered the most responses from listeners, as well as some of my favorites, and the guest who I have received the most comments in the history of the podcast. If you are someone new to the show or have been listening for some time, this is a good primer on episodes to go back and listen to and get a feel for what you will find in the back catalog. If you've been listening for a while you may have already heard some of these or, if you are like me and have listened to all the hundreds of episodes in the archives, you might can check out some of the great shows in the archives. I did not want to do a normal top five or top ten list, so left how many folks to feature up to chance and rolled two six-sided dice to see how many to select, then of the one most popular guests was actually a duo, leaving us with the top 9 most interviewees of this year. In no particular order, and with a brief description of the interview, they are: Marisha Auerbach who joined me to discuss urban permaculture and the role of preserving bio-diversity in that space. Ben Weiss and Wilson Alvarez were on the show several times and talked about their Rewilding efforts, and to answer listener questions about their 2013 interview “Restoring Eden”. You can hear more about the piece that started it all through this link: Restoring Eden Natasha Alvarez and I sat down to talk about Permaculture as Revolution and how, through her project The Year of Black Clothing, she found more love for the world and how to take action to protect Earth. Listen and find your own connections to this place we call home and how to make a difference in your own way. Eric Puro of ThePOOSH.org discussed the organization, natural building, and finding solutions from local resources. He also encourages anyone who wants to do this, or any other kind of permaculture work, to go out there, get your hands dirty, and get digging. Rhamis Kent (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) was the first guest in the Faith and Earthcare series. Through multiple episodes Rhamis provided an open perspective on Islam and the tenets of faith that leads us to understand how this religion implores the faithful to care for the earth and one another. If your main exposure to Islam is through the nightly news, give this one a listen and gain a better understanding of this faith. Adam Campbell (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) spent nearly three hours with me discussing permaculture and education and the operations at the Peace and Permaculture Center where he lives along with other members of the Possbility Alliance. Tradd Cotter joined me to discuss his latest book, Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation, an incredible work that demystifyies mushrooms and makes the practice of propagation and remediation more accessible for anyone interesting in playing with fungi. and finally that brings us to Mark Shepard (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) whose interview on a single day yielded nearly three hours of finished material spread across three episodes of the podcast. He shared with us his background and, through the lens of listener questions, the practices of restoration agriculture. My personal favorites from this year, excluding any that may have already been mentioned above, include Byron Joel, for having such an honest conversation with me and still allowing what became very personal and private to be made public. Rachel Kaplan, my first interview guest ever, for coming back onto the show after all these years for another great conversation. Two other interviews that really strike me are the ones with Karryn Olson-Ramanujan and Derrick Jensen. Both of those conversations challenged my perspectives in ways that I wasn't ready for, and I still reflect on how to make permaculture more accessible and diverse, while also fitting it into the larger context of protecting and repairing the earth. In looking back over 2014 there remains one final question. Who was the biggest guest of all time on the show? Was it someone from the past year? No. That was someone who has not appeared since 2013, Ethan Hughes (Part 1: Radical Possibilities) (Part 2: Practical Possibilities). His conversations then and in 2012 about the Possibility Alliance really inspired many listeners to make changes in their lives and reach out to let me know of the impact it had. The work of all the members of the Possibility Alliance and Stillwater Sanctuary to live without petrol or electricity speaks to an authenticity in living our lives that many desire to move towards. Those conversations with Ethan Hughes continues to influence my way of thinking and is one of the many reasons for moving the podcast and my online permaculture work towards a gift economy. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest for this episode is Dave Jacke a designer from Massachusetts and author, along with Eric Toensmeier, of Edible Forest Gardens Volume 1 and 2. Today he joins us to discuss Ecological Culture Design. Dave is a returning guest to the show. You can hear about his background and how he came to do this work in his initial interview. If this is your first time listening to Dave I recommend you start there to get a feel for the level of candor you'll hear in this episode. This is an open and honest conversation about the four components of Ecological Culture Design: Technology Resources Social and Economic Structures Cosmology We discuss how we must include these elements in our designs for permaculture systems. These areas matter because these are the pieces we must work with in order to bring the so-called “Invisible Structures” of permaculture to the forefront. Dave and I end the conversation with a constructive critique on what it means to organize, practice, and teach permaculture. In preparing this episode Dave and I both listened to the audio before it went out on the air and he asked that I correct his statement about Tantric philosophy. In the interview he said, “the perceiver, the perceived and the object of perception are one.” What he meant was “the perceiver, the perceived and the process of perception are one ,” a subtle but big difference. I agree with much of what Dave has to say in this episode. We cannot keep calling the non-landscape portions of our design invisible, or they will remain there, on the outside, away from view. We need to communicate about them differently in order to understand them and make them a part of our larger designs so that what we do can continue long after our ability to maintain or consult on a system is gone. For much the same reason the Designers' Manual only the beginning. Yes, every permaculture designer should have a copy in their library as a reference, and to understand some of the early vision as expressed by Bill Mollison, but in additional to that book we need a large library of materials to reference and cross reference and research to create good designs. With that I would like to see a new edition of the Designers' Manual written every decade or so as an encyclopedia of permaculture that can include more information about what we've learned over the years, but written as a collective cooperative piece by the community that takes the best of what everyone has to offer, and focuses on their areas of specialty, to create a book with multiple perspectives and voices. Get Dave Jacke and Ben Falk to write about formal design, Jude Hobbs and Andrew Millison about permaculture education, Marisha Auerbach and Rachel Kaplan to cover urban permaculture, and Karryn Olson-Ramanujan and Adam Brock on social permaculture. Those are just the names and topics off the top of my head. The Designers' Manual as written by Mollison is over 500 pages. There's room for many authors to contribute to such an effort. If you'd be interested in contributing to something like this, maybe we can get a proposal together and create a new manual for the 21st century. Whatever your permaculture plans, I'm here to help.
