My guest today, Leslie Hsu, is an entrepreneur by background and happenstance through much of her career! She began working in the handbag industry which led her to become absolutely enthralled by the intersection of design and functionality. Now, she is the CEO and co-founder of SUNFLOW, a beach brand that is designing innovative products that will elevate your seaside experience.   What Leslie and I talk about today is how to go from an idea to actually creating a product that we can put out into the world that not only adds tremendous value but enables us to facilitate joy as entrepreneurs. Leslie shares about her personal journey from idea to execution, how she lives at the intersection of entrepreneurship and lifestyle, her advice around being married to your business partner, and her self-care tips and advice for maintaining a balanced life while working from home.   This was a truly amazing conversation where we really go deep on the lifestyle of entrepreneurship and everything that it has to offer. She envisioned SUNFLOW as a modern brand focused on both function and fashion. Just in time for Summer 2020, the SUNFLOW brand was unveiled. It features beautiful chairs at the center of the collection, as well as an assortment of complementary accessories to create a full outdoor solution.   Leslie's design career was launched more than two decades ago when she joined the Calvin Klein design team. In 2000, Leslie started her own namesake handbag brand, Leslie Hsu New York, which sold in hundreds of stores around the world including Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel, Fred Segal Melrose, Stanley Korshak, Intermix, and Takashimaya. Later she launched accessories collections for high-profile brands such as UGG®, True Religion Brand Jeans®, and Jonathan Adler.   Leslie attended Penn State University and earned a BS in International Business. It wasn't an idea that she was rushing to market. Rather, she was being as innovative and intentional as she could with the product she was creating.   As entrepreneurs, there's a time and place to move quickly and to step back and know when to take our time. Do you really think you can do it alone? In her experience, what helped Leslie create the level of success she enjoys now in terms of happiness and inner peace is that she had like-minded people around her to do it together with. All alone by yourself, you falter, and at times lose the resolve to continue the journey. When you have all others to have your backing and supporting you, you can always get guided to continue reaching for your goal.  It’s harder to do things on your own, but when done with others who are just as determined and share the same fate you have, you become collaborative. Besides, having someone and a community to hold you accountable for the success you set for yourself makes it all worth it. No one who has reached a level of success in any aspect of their life does it alone. If you want a faster route for a lasting transformation, it’s best to do it with a community. Then, you vibrate in the same wavelength of vibration money and energy as the rest of them. “There is nothing that is more healing than knowing that you are not alone on your path.” - Leslie Thornton What you will learn from this episode: 02:10 - What helped her create her next level of happiness, and inner peace success 03:48 - The mentality of doing it all by yourself 05:08 - How Leslie’s program is designed to give people permanent and long-lasting success 05:34 - What is more healing to know? 08:21 - Waiting for an invitation to live your greatest potential 14:33 - How no one who’s got a level of success has done it all alone 16:02 - Your success is my success 16:47 - How to create a mindset and wavelength of successful people 17:43 - It’s the backing 18:41 - A very smart tactic to have for success 19:55 - Vibrating in the same wavelength of vibration money and energy 22:06 - The gift you can give yourself Connect With Leslie Thornton: WeighLossAlbany.com E: Leslie@LeslieMThornton.com Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

Episode Summary:  Leslie’s was founded in March 1963 as a one-man pool supply operation working out of a backyard shed in North Hollywood, California. 54 years later, the company had grown to become “The World’s Largest Retailer of Swimming Pool Supplies”.  We speak with Leslie’s Brian Agnew and Chad Christensen. Brian has been with the company for almost two decades and currently serves as Senior Vice President of Commercial and Wholesale. Chad joined Leslie’s in late 2016 and today is the company’s Group Vice President of Commercial Sales and Operations.  Listen in as Brian and Chad discuss what Leslie’s has learned from its acquisitions of NPS and Warehouse Pool Supplies and how they are committing to the pool trade professional through various new initiatives, including a push for more wholesale partners and its new enhanced PRO Partner Program.  Topics Discussed:  01:06 - An introduction to Brian Agnew and Chad Christensen  04:45 - Chad’s ASU quarterback days  09:47 - How Leslie’s got started  15:42 - Everybody plays a role in order on a successful team  17:44 - Leslie’s emphasis on customer experience  20:23 - Leslie’s has not aggressively gone after wholesale customers  29:42 - How Leslie ensures that customers have great experiences   34:25 - Respect and trust are earned through action  39:05 - What pool professionals can expect from shopping at Leslie’s   41:01 - Leslie’s priority service, rebate program, and ext warranty  42:34 - Drop off your cleaners and dry end of the pump  47:35 - Leslie’s new enhanced PRO Partner Program  56:23 - Skimmer and SPPA benefits      Sponsors:  Leslie’s  Piranha Pool Products  Skimmer  PoolRx  Connect with Guest:  Website  Facebook  Instagram  Twitter  YouTube    Resources Mentioned:  Store Locator  Connect with Pool Chasers:  Website  Instagram  Facebook  Facebook Group  Twitter  YouTube  Patreon      Key Quotes from Episode:  There are so many companies that started in somebody’s garage. They started with a vision and a work ethic that helped them accomplish something great. With the way that Leslie’s has continued to grow, it’s helped change the industry in terms of being that neighborhood pool store. ~Chad  Everybody plays a role in providing the customer the best experience they possibly can. ~Chad  One of the things I would mention too that as well is that from a company perspective, you know, companies are always evolving, and if you're not evolving, if you're not growing and expanding what you're doing, chances are you're going to get bypassed by somebody else. ~Chad If we can take care of that pool trade professional through the services that we offer and the partnerships with our store teams, we know, in turn, they’re going to take care of the stores and that’s just a great partnership. Where everybody wins in the relationship, that’s a great partnership. ~Brian Since day one of Leslie's opening in 1963, we've had great relationships with pool trade partners. We've not had a structured wholesale program in place, though, and that's really what we're in the process of doing. ~Brian You earn respect through action. You earn respect through the commitment and the effort that you put into whatever endeavor you’re trying to do. ~Chad

In this episode, Christina Martini and Leslie Zane discuss: Leslie’s earlier career and how she learned to implement her own vision and philosophy of how brands should be marketing themselves.  How Leslie defines a brand and how a brand is its most effective.  The beginning and growth of Leslie’s company, Triggers.  Making your brand the dominant, instinctive choice to consumers.    Key Takeaways: A brand is a collection of associations, both positive and negative, in our memories and our subconscious.  There is more to branding than what you see in research. There are powerful codes and queues that ignite our memory and draw a connection out of us. You can use these ideas that already exist to become a way to leverage your brand growth.  Everything is about brand and has the potential to be thought about as a brand.    "Brands exist in the minds of consumers, and that is really how we need to be thinking of them." —  Leslie Zane   Connect with Leslie Zane: Website: https://lesliezane.com/ (lesliezane.com) & https://triggers.com/ (triggers.com) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lesliepicotzane/ (linkedin.com/in/lesliepicotzane) Twitter: https://twitter.com/Leslie_Zane (twitter.com/Leslie_Zane) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leslie.zane.9 (facebook.com/leslie.zane.9)   Connect with Christina Martini: Twitter:https://twitter.com/TinaMartini10?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor ( )https://twitter.com/TinaMartini10?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (@TinaMartini10) Website:http://www.paradigmshiftshow.com/ ( )http://www.paradigmshiftshow.com/ (www.paradigmshiftshow.com) LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinamartini ( )https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinamartini (Christina Martini) Email: christinamartini.paradigmshift@gmail.com     Show notes by Podcastologist: Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie   Audio production byhttps://www.turnkeypodcast.com/ ( )https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/ (Turnkey Podcast Productions.) As podcasters, we sometimes joke about people trying to game the system - the "podcast promoter" constantly messaging on LinkedIn, the host buying guest spots on other shows, and more. But the fact is, it's no laughing matter. Not because people are gaming the system. But because when things go wrong, it could be our clients who take the hit. Their shows could be removed from directories. Their reputations could be tarnished or ruined. They might just want to give up. We don't want that. We want our clients to succeed. We want to see their shows grow organically, and it can be done. But if they don't know what to look out for, they could fall victim to someone else's black hat without even knowing it. Thankfully, https://greatland.media (Leslie Martin) joined us to share his experiences with the dark side of marketing so that we can know EXACTLY how some of these scams work. You'll discover: How Leslie unintentionally got involved with a black hat marketer. How the entire system was set up to generate consistent cash flow and keep customers from leaving. Many of us in the professional organizing community have had to think about alternative income streams as we can no longer go into people’s homes or visit corporate clients. Leveraging virtual operations is a great way to boost your revenue, and in today’s episode, we will be talking about webinars. Our guest, Leslie Josel, is an ADHD-student and parenting coach and an award-winning entrepreneur, having founded Order Out of Chaos, an organization whose mission is to help parents guide their children to success in learning and life. She is also an award-winning author, creator of the renowned Academic Planner: A Tool for Time Management, and an internationally-acclaimed speaker. In this show, Leslie walks us through how she built her prolific webinar business, which she started six years ago. We dive right in, hearing about the small steps she took to start. Leslie highlights the importance of being generous with your content, having an abundance mentality, and giving things away for free. Rather than using a sales funnel approach, Leslie is upfront and transparent about the costs her clients will incur. She talks about why she has chosen to operate her business in this way rather than continually trying to upsell. From there, we learn how she builds her community and why she always asks them questions. As we wrap up, we talk about the power of affiliates, why webinars offer more wiggle room than courses, and the power of generosity. Leslie has built her business with integrity and a spirit of giving, and we know you will learn as much from her as we did!   Key Points From This Episode: Hear more about Leslie’s business and her decision to go virtual six years ago. This week we continue the abuse mini-series on the Divorce Survival Guide podcast. In this episode, Leslie Morgan Steiner, author of The Naked Truth, returns to the show to join me in a discussion about domestic violence. She is a New York Times best-selling author, a columnist for The Washington Post, a speaker on work/family balance, a successful corporate executive – and domestic violence survivor.  Her book, Crazy Love, is a harrowing memoir about her journey through a severely violent marriage. Together we discuss the complexities of domestic violence and Leslie shares how she ultimately ended her tumultuous marriage and began to heal. Still, to come on the Divorce Survival Guide mini-series on abuse, we’ll explore financial abuse and how to communicate with a high-conflict co-parent. You can sign up for my email list to be notified whenever a new episode is released or subscribe to the podcast on your favorite podcast listening app.  Show Highlights Leslie’s story of domestic violence abuse and how it was a transformational experience. (9:09) The stigma and shame of being an abuse victim is similar to being a sexual assault victim.  (15:07) 85% of abusers are men and some red flags to watch for in potential partners. (16:33) Caution: If you think “I can't help him, but if he gets into therapy, then he'll be okay,” this is true — if he does his own work and his own therapy. The research has shown it can be a decades-long process. (27:47) Domestic violence is a triage situation: help the victims first, but we're never really going to end abuse unless we start focusing on perpetrators getting the counseling that they need. (28:21) Abusive relationships: should you stay or should you go? (30:12) How Leslie reconciled being the victim of a destructive relationship and the champion of relationships themselves as a force for healing. (42:29) Learn More About Leslie: New York Times best-selling author, a columnist for The Washington Post, speaker on work/family balance, successful corporate executive – and domestic violence survivor.  Leslie Morgan Steiner is the author of four nonfiction books: the New York Times bestselling memoir Crazy Love; the critically acclaimed anthology Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families; The Baby Chase: How Surrogacy Is Transforming the American Family; and her latest memoir, The Naked Truth, which explores female sexuality, self-esteem, and dating after 50.  Steiner holds a BA in English from Harvard College. Her first job was writing and editing for Seventeen Magazine. After graduating from Wharton business school in 1992 with an MBA in Marketing, she launched Splenda Brand Sweetener internationally for Johnson & Johnson. She returned to her hometown of Washington, DC in 2001 to become General Manager of the 1.1 million-circulation Washington Post Magazine, a position she held for five years. From 2006-2008 she wrote over 500 columns for the Washington Post’s popular on-line work/family column, “On Balance.” She has been profiled by People Magazine, the New York Times, Glamour, Psychology Today, Redbook, The Washington Post, and other publications.    Steiner is a regular speaker at international women’s conferences and media guest on The Today Show, National Public Radio, Anderson Cooper 360, The Tamron Hall Show, ABC, NBC, CBS, and cable news networks. A recent study of the State Of The American Workplace found only 33% of employees are engaged in their work, while 56% were disengaged, and even worse, 16% actively disengaged with their workplace.  The cause of this disengagement? Toxicity, bullying, and exclusion within the workplace.  Today you’ll get not one, but two eye-opening perspectives on toxicity in the workplace and how you can fix almost any problem in your company by establishing a safe, and trusting environment for your employees.  Leslie has firsthand experience in dealing with toxic workplaces, from getting “voted out” of a family company, to regaining the trust and loyalty of employees who have been hurt. She offers real-life examples and solutions that will help you answer the big questions in your workspace. Kemy has been in the shoes of those dubbed “workspace bully”, and has worked countless hours to re-socialize and become an expert in workplace equity that provides a natural, safe place for companies and their employees to work together. Learn his methods like taking a step back to assess a situation more clearly and how you can provide support and honesty with your employees even through times of crisis.  Whether you work in person or virtually, Leslie and Kemy will give you their top tips on how to create a workspace where employees can be themselves, feel proud of the work they’ve done, and create a thriving community within your company.    Here’s what we cover: How to recognize diversity by exclusion  How Leslie regained trust and loyalty from employees The power of trust from your employees Creating safe spaces in digital companies How to eliminate bullying and discrimination in your events The backlash of backchat How going virtual has brought more opportunity for equity The flipside of virtual: how workplace bullying has increased due to COVID How phone calls can create closer bonds between calls How you can create trust before meeting people Gaining trust and loyalty in times of crisis Real-life stories of trust that is restored  And much more!     LINKS: Book Kemy Joseph or Leslie August to speak at your next event by emailing stageagency@advanceyourreach.com  Connect with Kemy: Website: www.FearsAdvantage.com/Speak Facebook: facebook.com/FEARSAdvantage Twitter: @kemyjoseph Insta: @kemyawesome LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kemy-joseph/ Company Name:  F.E.A.R.S. Growing up, he was socialized as a sexist, racist, homophobe, bigot, bully, and criminal. As an adult he’s made the extraordinary effort to re-socialize himself into a human being — a healthy, educated black man who respects women, Celebrates Diversity, and supports the equal rights of all people. His journey represents the healing that’s possible when we use negative emotions for positive change and learn the skills we need to treat others equitably. Kemy is creating a world where we rise above segregation, hatred, and violence to heal our past traumas and ensure the safety of all human beings. In service to that vision, he works with hundreds of leaders in business and education — in addition to many Nobel Peace PrizeWinners — to inspire global social justice initiatives.   More About Leslie: For 35 years, Leslie August held progressively senior management roles in international insurance agencies. In that time she saw the stark comparison between toxic vs. healthy workplaces and how toxic workplaces resulted in employee disengagement, distraction, illness, and impaired productivity. Ultimately she personally experienced bullying and workplace toxicity and gained a first-hand understanding of the challenges and strategies for dealing with toxic work dynamics and their increased risks.

Our mind is a meaning-making machine. It always creates thoughts that often breed self-doubt, insecurity, fear, scarcity thoughts, and what have you. When you are full of these, you are likely always to question yourself, and the moment you do so, you're putting things on hold. That is your mind's limiting mechanism not to explore what could potentially be the end of your struggle. You feel so awkward around food, there's nothing but negative thoughts about it. When you look yourself in the mirror, as though you see someone else you dreaded for so long. There's not even a tad bit of appreciation you can hear. Yes, you become mean even to yourself. While making sense of your struggle, you always find yourself hiding in the darkness of your make-believe world of smallness and not making any progress. All you are ever harboring are limiting beliefs that are not in the slightest manner of any help to any of what you want to happen. How do you come out of this dark tunnel you've subjected yourself into? Learn about self-awareness, fully keeping in touch with the deepest of your thoughts and emotions to heal any trauma you might have in your life. There is a way to quiet the many voices in your head that are feeding negativity in you. There is indeed a way to tame it. That is where Hypnosis helps. Just learn to say yes to take action with a coach who can help you unearth what has been there underneath you, bothering you for the longest time. But which you don't have any idea about. It's about time you face it, conquer your fear, fail fast, and you will see your success faster than you could ever imagine yourself getting out of it all alone. You are more than about your thoughts, your weight, and your body. Just learn to trust the program, many have already done, and they've seen tremendous life transformation they would never have experienced had they kept hiding and making excuses.  "When I continue questioning myself, I continue to waste time.I procrastinate. I don't have to make decisions by myself. I'm scared of knowing my value and my worth as a woman, as a human being." - Leslie Thornton  Topics Covered: What am I getting out of questioning myself? She’s the granddaughter of Holocaust refugees who were refused entry into the U.S. in the 1930’s. Through generations, her family leaned on entrepreneurship, hard work and education to settle into their new home — values that, until recently, were mostly reserved for the males in the family. After securing permanent residency in the U.S. — and with it, the ability to switch jobs and join smaller companies — Leslie moved into tech startups. She led product management and marketing at Big Fish Games, going into their $1 billion acquisition. She then joined Julep Beauty, an Andreessen-Horowitz backed ecommerce startup, leading product management, front-end engineering, and digital marketing. She left Julep in 2015 to start her own company. The following year, when her daughter was 6 months old, Leslie launched Venture Kits — games that develop leadership skills through play. Her one-of-a-kind, inspirational concept quickly garnered critical acclaim and customer love. The experience of raising capital for this company, coupled with the realization that only two percent of venture capital is invested in female founders in the US, propelled Leslie to start the Female Founders Alliance in 2017.Today, Leslie leads FFA full time, dedicated to her personal mission of creating a more just world for her daughter. She was named one of Forbes Magazine’s 100 Most Powerful Women from Central America & the Caribbean, Seattle Magazine’s Most Influential People, and Puget Sound Business Journal’s 40 Under 40. We love our families, but sometimes we just need some space. Some space to work, relax, and reset after a long day of work interruptions and barking dogs. This is why I recommend building a routine whether it’s morning meditation or a bath before bed every night, do something that puts yours in your happy place. The difference between copyright and copywriters. There’s a huge difference and copywriters like Leslie get the question all the time. One of them protects your rights for something you’ve created, and another makes you money by writing things that will make your creations sell. How Leslie went from having almost nothing to building her successful business that she runs to this day. Kids and adults alike are experiencing new levels of anxiety and stress from their digital lives. I’m excited to bring you another two part episode on a topic that has plagued me in my first year as a plant parent: understanding natural light, and what the heck “bright indirect light” actually means. When figuring out how to do this episode, I knew I needed a lighting and plant expert who would give me the space to ask the simple questions to understand this complex topic. Enter Leslie Halleck. Leslie is a Horticulturalist by education and profession with a passion for plants and gardening. She has worked in many sectors of the gardening industry, from nurseries, to being the Director of Horticulture Research at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden to founding Halleck Horticultural, a consulting service for Green Industry businesses. Her book, Gardening under Lights; The Complete Guide for Indoor Growers, is the ultimate guide to understanding artificial lighting for indoor growers of any experience level. Leslie joins me to share her years of experience with houseplants and indoor gardening to ironically not discuss her vast knowledge of indoor grow lights, but to teach us about the basics of measuring our natural indoor light, to better understand out indoor environment, and whether we need to supplement with lights. Today’s episode is titled General Rules, next weeks episode is titled Measuring Tools. General Rules will consist of my lengthy conversation with Leslie about lighting basics, and how we can understand our indoor lighting environments without special or expensive meters. She also just imparts piece after piece or plant parenthood wisdom, and honestly teaches us a lot more than just how to understand light. Next week, in “Measuring Tools”, we will dive into the homework assignment she gave me, which involved me using a light meter on my phone to actually measure my surrounds, which gave me shocking “aha” moments. I hope this two part series helps uncover this tricky problem and helps you be more at ease and empowered about your personal indoor environments. In this episode we learn: - How Leslie came to be the lighting expert she is now - Measuring and understanding NATURAL light 101 - The difference between the volume of light vs the brightness of light - What PAR is and why it is important for understand our natural light in our apartments - The most brilliant metaphor for light that will make even the science inept person understand light, photons and photosynthesis - How the direction your window faces affects the amount of light in your apartment, and a good rule of thumb to live by - What the heck “bright indirect light’ actually is! - Practical steps to understanding “bright indirect light” for your specific surrounding - How many feet away from your windowsill does “bright light” turn to “medium light” and then turn to “low light” - Why we overwater our plants (spoiler alert… it’s often because of your lighting conditions) - If sunbeams that move throughout your apartments make a different for your plants - Why experimenting with plant placement and light is crucial Mentioned in this Episode: - Soltech Solutions Light, use bloomandgrow15 for 15% off on any of their lights at www.soltechsolutions.com - Lux Light Meter Pro App - Leslie’s Book, Gardening Under Lights; The Complete Guide for Indoor Growers Follow Leslie Halleck: https://lesliehalleck.com/ @lesliehalleck on twitter, pinterest, youtube, facebook Follow Bloom and Grow Radio @bloomandgrowradio on Instagram, www.bloomandgrowradio.com/garden-club to join the (free) online garden club!

Horse-crazy kids are born every day and many others find their way to a passion for horses as they go through childhood. But for those who someday want to work in the horse industry, figuring out where to begin can be extraordinarily difficult — especially if they don't have the contacts or the level of knowledge needed to get that first break.   The Kentucky Equine Management Internship (KEMI) was founded in 2000 to resolve this very real need. KEMI bridges the gap between desire to build a career in the horse world and actually having the skills and connections to do so, by providing meaningful opportunities to work with leading Thoroughbred farms, as well as significant classroom education.   Most of KEMI’s success is thanks to Elise’s guest today, Leslie Janecka, the program’s coordinator. 056: Yoga and Menopause with Leslie Kazadi Today Shannon has invited Leslie Kazadi to talk about yoga and menopause.  There can be a lot of shyness around discussing the profound physical, emotional and mental changes that menopause can bring. Leslie opens up about her own experience with menopause in a very honest way and how it led her to take it on as a special area of interest in relation to her yoga teachings.   There have been studies that have shown a promising correlation between yoga and the reduction of common menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep and mood disturbances, stress, and muscle and joint pain.  Leslie discusses these and other symptoms while revealing the increased health risks that accompany menopause. Also discussed is how yoga teachers can make their students more comfortable and what women experiencing menopausal symptoms need in their yoga practice.   Leslie has a wealth of education and experience to draw on. Leslie also had the opportunity to study in India with the masters of Ashtanga and Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar which inspired her to take yoga teacher training in 2001.   Leslie has worked with adults of all ages with complex medical conditions. She is passionate about making yoga accessible to all including those with injuries and older adults. She feels working with those who “don't think they can do yoga” especially fulfilling. Welcome to an all new episode of Within the Trenches, a podcast based on the experience of being a 9-1-1 dispatcher. In this episode I spoke with the first recipient of the Within the Trenches Continuing Education Scholarship. Her name is Leslie, a Telecommunicator, CTO and 2016 recipient of the Mary Antley Telecommunicator of the Year Award. She dispatches out of New Hanover County in North Carolina and it was an honor to have her on the show. We recorded live from the Indiana Convention Center for the 2016 National NENA Conference & Expo. This episode is sponsored by NENA and INdigital - A leader in Next-Gen Core Services. I was given an opportunity three years ago to bring my newly created podcast to the National NENA conference in Charlotte North Carolina. It changed my life in so many ways. I told my wife that one day I would pay it forward and I did that by creating a scholarship that would send a dispatcher to the national conference. There is so much to say about Leslie but I would rather you hear her story in her own words. Once again it was an honor to have her on the show and I see big things coming in her future. Keep doing what you do! As always if you have any questions or would like to be a guest on the show send an email to wttpodcast@gmail.com.
