This Q&A Conversation is based on the sermon titled "Real World Spirituality" from Joshua 5: 1 - 12 given on Feb 4th 2024.
Joshua 5:1 - 12As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel. At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.” So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth. And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them:… Though all the people who came out [of Egypt] had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. So it was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised…When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. And the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.Sermon Questions:1. Are there parts of your life or world that seem to not be touched by gospel reality? What are they?2. Are there ways of brining gospel reality and spirituality into those parts?3. Do you feel a pressure to write your own story, create your own brand?4. What are ways throughout the day and week you can be drawn back to God's story?5. Do you see God's love for you in Jesus as unbreakable, unstoppable? Do you live that way?6. What can help you see the sacraments as God's gift to partake of his love, giving you his story, encompassing your whole life?

Best-selling author Dr. Warren Farrell joins Tim to talk about America's boy crisis. Warren has written books that have sold around the world, and was named by the Financial Times as one of the world's 100 top thought leaders. In this episode he talks about his book called, “The Boy Crisis: Why our boys are struggling and what we can do about it.” We dig into the challenges boys face now and how parents and others can help them become the men everyone wants them to be. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Boy_Crisis_auphonic.mp3 Over the past couple of decades, there has been a gradual shift in the way society has approached issues affecting both boys and girls. One of the more surprising tends that has come out of this are many indicators that boys have suffered. In all 63 of the most developed nations, boys are falling behind. They're falling behind in school with scores dropping in reading and writing. Boys are more likely to drop out of high school and college than girls. They are more likely to die from an opioid overdose. Boys and young men are more prone to depression and suicides than girls and young women. Once in their 20s, men are five times more likely to commit suicide than women. There has been a noticeable drop in the average IQ for boys. These are just some of the indicators that Warren Farrell cites in his landmark book called, “The Boy Crisis.” Warren has written many books about men and family over the years. He's done an extensive amount of original research on men's issues in society. As a result, he's gained insights into how those issues start to take shape long before boys become men. For more than a century, Unity has taught spiritual principles that run like a thread through many of the world's religions. Founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore pulled from many world religions as they created this spiritual community. Now Unity and World Religions connects the dots between Unity teachings and the tenets of world religions, elaborating on the five universal principles taught in Unity and exploring how these are expressed throughout other faith traditions.Rev. Could a world spirituality be the first ever complete spiritual path? Our contemporary moment presents us with a pluralism of truths and I believe it is time to make a world spirituality that brings together the distinct strengths developed in the many cultures of our planet's history. The great gift of our era is that we have all the various spiritual traditions available to us, and we can watch them compete with each other and see which is most appropriate and effective in different circumstances. The truths revealed in the three domains of spirituality (physical, subtle and formless) are so powerful and attractive on their own terms that they can turn people in to ‘true believers' of the ‘one legitimate path'. I am agreeing that these truths are powerful, I know because I have done 25 years of sustained practice in all three of them and intend to continue to do so for the rest of my life. But I am calling for us to take the next step and combine them to make something new and even more powerful. It is an experiment, and we don't know the outcome for sure, but I believe it's a risk worth taking. Let's see how this plays out on the global stage. The proof will be if it creates human beings capable of bringing greater goodness, truth and beauty into the world? Do you feel restless? Have you ever lied in bed at night looking up at the ceiling wondering "Is this all there is to life?" Or have you ever achieved a big goal in life only to feel let down? Over 1500 years ago, Catholic bishop, philosopher and theologian Augustine of Hippo had those same feelings of angst and wrote down some insights on how to deal with them and they're just as relevant today as they were then. My guest today has written a book about Augustine's ancient insights on the anxiety of modern life and how this famous Catholic theologian has had a profound impact on Western philosophy, including among 20th-century existential philosophers. His name is James K. A. Smith and his book is On the Road with Saint Augustine. We begin our show discussing Augustine's biography and his oft-overlooked influence on atheistic existential philosophers like Heidegger, Sartre, and Camus. We then dig into the big ideas that Augustine hit on his famous book Confessions including how to deal with existential angst, how to find your true self, what it means to be truly free in life, and how to deal with our restless ambition. Along the way, James shows how 20th-century existential philosophers dealt with these questions, why he thinks existentialism falls shorts to answering them, and why Augustine's solutions might be better. Lots of great insights about big life questions in this episode. Get the snow notes at aom.is/augustine.

Our world today is not short on spiritual gurus who want to help you discover a hope and a purpose for your life. But what about a 4th century African priest? Would he have anything pertinent to say to you, to today's people of the digital age or millennials about how to find your reason for being? Well, if the person is St. Augustine of Hippo, then the answer is a resounding, Yes! Philosopher and author James K. A Smith, takes a more contemporary look at Augustine and his famous tome, Confessions, in his book, 'On The Road With Saint Augustine'. James calls it, "an invitation to journey with an ancient African who will surprise you by the extent to which he knows you." While Augustine is one of the pillars and fathers of the Catholic Church, Smith actually compares him to modern day, pop culture icons like Jay Z, as the priest takes a raw look at who he is and who we strive to be in the reality of who God is. Smith says Augustine is less judge and more AA sponsor. He's the kind of priest who wants to walk with us through our struggles to do what is right, because whatever it is we've done, he's done it as well. He knows what it means to want, to strive for success, to work towards a higher goal, only to see it become an unsatisfying achievement that leaves us wanting more. In this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Smith explores St. Augustine's take on sex, justice, freedom and Death. In the eyes of Augustine, we are all prodigals, searching for a way to come home into the Father's embrace.

Part 1 of an interview with Paul John Roach. Paul hosts a weekly radio show entitled World Spirituality on the Unity.fm internet radio network. The post 065 – An Interview with Paul John Roach – Part 1 appeared first on Mindfulness Online Training.
Its the most wonderful time of the year. Paul and Wendy Roach are back for their yearly Christmas visit. I look forward to this each year. It's like I am waiting for Mr and Mrs Clause. Christmastime is here and the first song goes by that same name. We have Tame Tame and Quiet doing the popular Christmas tune to start off the show. The first half of the show is very good. We talk about the American Christmas, history of Christmas, the winter solstice, pagans, the virgin Mary, the birth of Jesus and Santa Clause. Why is he always watching? The middle track is a beautiful song by The Cush. Recorded some 6 years ago this song is an amazing Christmas track and should be put on repeat. We continue the Christmas spirit in the second half with Christmas questions. The highlight of this to me was finding out what Paul's favorite Christmas movie is. I think we need a podcast screening of this film for next year. We also spend a little time finding out what Paul and Wendy have been doing the past year in retirement. If you miss hearing Paul's voice or want to hear more you can find his show World Spirituality on Unityfm and you can find all the links on http://www.pauljohnroach.com/ I hope all you guys have a Merry Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. I appreciate each one of you that has listened and supported this show over the past 5 years. It's not only important to me to share the good news about Fort Worth Art and Music but show and spread local love. It all starts here with you and me. Its Christmas! Spread the love, the joy and the peace. Much love always! #suckitstubbs #merrychristmas Oh Snap! I guess you want to hear about the last track. It's a doozy! Garage Barrage joined forces with Juma Spears for an epic Christmas Rap. Deus-Xmas-ina. It may be a little offensive to sensitive ears so I put it at the end. If you are here strictly for the wholesome churchy stuff you may want to stop before the last song plays, but if you like a little naughty fun sometimes, crank it to 11! Merry Christmas Funkytown!
