They have to do that for themselves. We need to focus on the concept of one more rep and how it relates to meditation and our daily improvement. We need to start educating people on how to be self aware at a younger age.The cognitive triangle is what we need to realize affects how others see us. People can't see our thoughts and feelings. But only are actions which define who we are.We should look to implement a 10-15 minute slot of time each day when students are able to practice self awareness as it pertains to the cognitive triangle.EI180 is a series of 15 minute lessons designed to help students increase their self awareness. The only way or make our communities better is to start with self-awareness.Stay in Touch:WebsiteEmail: mjames5526@gmail.comPhone: 781-367-9298Don't Forget to Review the Show!I appreciate you checking out the episodes. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
In this enlightening episode of The Counter Narrative Podcast, host Charles sits down with trauma-informed expert Charle Peck to delve deep into the critical shortcomings of current Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks. Charle provocatively argues that the SEL programs in place today fall short of their transformative potential, primarily because they overlook the intricate tapestry of human interactions and the nuanced needs of individuals grappling with trauma. With her insightful analysis, Charle underscores the necessity for a more holistic approach that genuinely accommodates the complexities of human behavior and emotions. As the conversation unfolds, Charles and Charle coin the term "simple sustainable solutions," advocating for a paradigm shift in how we conceive and implement SEL initiatives. This episode is a clarion call to educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals to rethink and revitalize our current methodologies, ensuring they are truly inclusive and effective in nurturing resilient, empathetic communities. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion that challenges the status quo and paves the way for innovative, accessible strategies in the realm of social and emotional learning. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thecounternarrative/support
Tonight, we explore everyday adventures of children through the lens of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). I cannot even begin to emphasize how important it is for parents and schools to understand the need for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in a child's life. It is not just an educational buzzword; it's a fundamental aspect of a child's development that impacts their overall well-being and success. In this episode, we explore the family environment, school, playground, and digital world to discuss how SEL shapes children's lives. From morning routines and family relationships to classroom collaborations and after-school activities, we'll explore how SEL empowers children to get through challenges, build connections, and thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
Today we are joined by Dr. Emma McMain. Emma works in the College of Education at Washington State University as a postdoctoral teacher and researcher, focusing on assessment for pre-service elementary teachers, cultural considerations in education, and social and emotional learning (SEL). Her work aims to promote social and ecological justice, seeing education as an important site of social transformation. Dr McMain's recent works include: Drawing the line: Teachers affectively and discursively question what counts as “appropriate behavior” in schools — which dissects the power dynamics of classrooms in determining what is “appropriate” behavior; and The “Problem Tree” of SEL: A Sociopolitical Literature Review — which contextualizes what social-emotional learning actually means in a classroom setting from a variety of perspectives and in history. Particularly, we wanted to reach out and talk more about the idea of SEL as systemic change versus SEL as an add-on, and why this matters as we think about racism, sexism, neoliberalism, and more, especially in the context of SEL in the ongoing culture war and attacks on schools.More about Dr Emma McMainDrawing the line: Teachers affectively and discursively question what counts as “appropriate behavior” in schools Hosted on Acast. The topic of this episode was suggested to me by the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence, which is that state's professional association for out-of-school time programs (OST). Its member organizations were reporting some troubling incidents that involved, what they perceived to be, increasingly dysregulated students, staff, and parents. Their observations are anecdotal, but, as you will hear from my guest, Angel Jannasch-Pennell, they are indicative of some very real trends. Angel has a lifetime of experience working on educational issues as a teacher, a researcher, an administrator, and, for the last decade, as the co-founder and CEO of KOI Education, a firm that has trained thousands of educators and direct service providers on subjects like Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and behavior management. This interview was recorded in front of a live audience on October 22nd, 2022, at the Arizona Center of Afterschool Excellence's annual conference. Classroom instruction in the field of “Social and Emotional Learning” (SEL) has recently come under fire, particularly from conservatives. Critics see SEL as a mechanism for the government to indoctrinate students on controversial social issues. But should teachers abandon social and emotional learning altogether? In this episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by https://fordhaminstitute.org/about/fordham-staff/nathaniel-grossman (Nathaniel Grossman), a research intern at the Fordham Institute and former elementary school teacher. Nathaniel explains how Social and Emotional Learning has always been a critical component of a child's education. He highlights the importance of creating a comfortable environment in the classroom for children to express their concerns and to teach them how to function well and collaborate with others. He worries that some forms of SEL will run contrary to values students are learning at home. And he is also concerned that in the name of improving students' mental health, districts are eliminating testing and other assessments. Lowering expectations for students, which in turn lowers students' expectations of themselves, is SEL done poorly. On Monday's Mark Levin Show, a tornado-ravaged Kentucky over the weekend is a reminder that life can be fleeting. Despite that, the blame game is disgusting, whether it's President Biden or FEMA they're both spinning this horrific event as a human-caused disaster rather than a natural disaster. Sadly, the media just allows these lies to go unchecked and promulgates this propaganda. Then, NBC's Chuck Todd asks whether it's better to get the virus or get the vaccine, this program will tell you that you can get the virus even though you have already gotten the vaccine and boosters. Therapeutics such, as monoclonal antibodies championed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are available and are life-saving for the public. This is not an either/or scenario and people should be free to choose what is best for their own health. Later, New York schools used $9 million from coronavirus relief funds to introduce Critical Race Theory disguised as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The U.S Secretary of Education supported the idea of using these funds to create agents of social change targeting cultural and linguistic inequity. Afterward, Barak Ravid, an Israeli journalist playing both sides of the fence, continues to cause a stir over an interview he's done with former President Trump. So the question becomes who gave Trump such bad advice with respect to even meeting with Ravid. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the minds of parents, students, and even teachers, Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) has become an “academic subject.” Rather than being seen as the set of life skills that all adults in a student's life must come together to help them develop, we have transformed the development of these skills into classes, curriculums, and syllabi. So, if you are a teacher in a school, how do you help make sure the SEL skills you teach each week transfer to the homes in your community? If you are a parent, how do you practice these skills practically with your children? Most of Michael's research and work is about addressing learning challenges faced by bright students, specifically in math, writing, reading, science, and test prep with or without diagnosed learning disabilities. You can find more of his work at pillarsoflearning.com or read him tweeting into the void at @LearningPillars on twitter. Now, I'm going to warn you before we get started. This episode is heavy. Essential … but heavy. During our conversation, Michael talks about his journey with Twice Exceptional Learners and how he quickly realized that since all of our students are unique they present unique challenges and that we should avoid the prescriptive approaches so often presented as we attempt to incorporate SEL, Mindfulness, and other holistic educational initiatives into our curriculum. Instead, he argues, that context should drive content and we must be wary about teaching students to simply acknowledge and accept the situations in which they are in. Michael takes a deep dive into brain's processing and points out that this information should be streamlined but due to various reasons, it is overly complicated and thus not readily accessible by all educators. Initially, we set out to talk about Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at a time when millions of kids have been home, attending school online and missing out on valuable time with their peers. But we quickly realized COVID is far from the only thing kids and educators are grappling with—racial inequity, trauma, isolation, social unrest, and overworked parents are a significant part of the equation. In this episode we talk with Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, Linda Lantieri, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) specialist, Amber Pleasant and early career High School teacher, Ben Chase— three people actively involved with implementing and evaluating SEL in the classroom. For full episode bios, transcripts and links to resources referenced in today's episode visit our episode notes on our website here.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/firstpersonplural)

His career took him to several markets including San Angelo, Texas; Mobile, Alabama; Lynchburg, Virginia; and Chicago, Illinois. Clement has covered numerous big events throughout his career such as the Super Bowl, NBA All-Star Game, and multiple college football National Championships. Clement is the author of “How to Become a Broadcasting Star” and the founder of Broadcasting Career Mentor (BCM). BCM provides media training for youth across the country and offers in person training and virtual media training through the Video Journalism Pro Online Course. During our conversation, we discussed ways to use media as a platform in which students can blend various academic skills and apply them in a real world setting. He challenges that such programs should not be considered as extras but instead should be essential. As we push our students to higher order thinking skills, he urges educators to transform students into not just consumers of information but creators. Clement recognizes that teachers may be hesitant to incorporate multimedia into their lessons citing that some lack the skills while others lack the support necessary to take such risks. Despite this, he insists that educators start small and allow students to flourish. As educators, it is not our job to know everything but instead we need to facilitate our students' learning and sometimes that means growing together. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast. Remember, while we all have different roles, we all have a single job, educating our students. Black History Month may seem like a decades old celebration that is deeply rooted in our past but the reality is that it has only existed formally for less than 40 years. That may be surprising considering the extensive struggles that African-Americans have had in this country. As we become more aware of that troubling history, however, more and more people are beginning to question whether or not we need a Black History Month or if its presence does little more that contribute the marginalization of black history. During this episode, I explore the history behind Black History Month and question its role in our educational system today. I acknowledge the pushback by those who stress the need to move beyond a singular month and offer a suggestion for expanding our teaching of black history throughout the year. And I conclude with my hopes for how Black History Month may in fact evolve into something greater. I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast. Oh what a rabbit hole we have fallen into. This is the first in a series on education in America. Hold tight to your umbrellas because this one's got us riled up. We begin by telling Lizzie Martinez's story. Lizzie didn’t wear a bra to school one day while recovering from a sunburn. She was asked to put bandaids over her nipples by her school’s administration and shared her story online, which went viral. We discuss school dress codes and the often unfair consequences of these rules. We talked to students who brought up the pervasive problem of bullying. Bullying wasn’t even defined until 2014, and it’s proven a complex issue for schools to handle. One program, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), teaches self awareness and how to make responsible decisions. SEL has shown to effectively lower hostile events in schools but is only used a small number of districts. Sexual harassment, assault, and rape are widely reported in schools across the nation. Several students we spoke to felt their schools didn’t take action against these claims. National statistics support this with reports rising, but school action and punishment hasn’t equally increased. Title IX is a federal civil rights law passed in 1972 as part of the Education Amendments. Title IX states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Although this law is in place, many reports go nowhere. In an upcoming episode we’ll dig deeper into the racial inequalities in the U.S. school system, so stay tuned! Follow us on Instagram @HoldMyUmbrella and thank you for listening!
Gareth chats with Nandini Chatterjee Singh, a neuroscientist from the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) about the scientific case for centering Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in education and schooling.
Gareth talks with Ellen Mahoney, an expert in building Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs and Founder of Sea Change Mentoring. about the powerful impacts of having (or being) a mentor.
EVERYTHING you do in life takes courage, every change you go through, every bridge you try to cross, every new thing you are so afraid of trying requires us to muster up some courage to try it. BUTT… I get it you want all of “the things” and you feel ike your feet are glued to the fucking floor and you don’t have the courage to make it happen. But YOU CAN BE COURAGEOUS, and you can become unstuck. On this podcast I sit down with Ashley Mitchell and we dig right into what it takes to have, COURAGE. Ashley Mitchell founded The Courage Campaign, which is a nonprofit organization that provides public schools and communities with high-caliber physical fitness instruction combined with personal development and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). She aims to share what she’s learned and help others to unlock passion, invoke courage, and reinvent achievement. Website: Podcast:

Jerald LeVon Hoover became the published author of a Young Adult (YA) title, one of a few books targeted toward young Black and Brown boys ages 12 and up, “My Friend, My Hero”. This novella has become a staple, as recommended reading in elementary through high schools across the country and around the world. According to BlackBoard African-American Booksellers, that is a distinct honor Hoover shares with a short list of African American male YA authors including: Walter Dean Myers, Kevin Powell, Kwame Alexander, Ralph Burgess, and Jason Reynolds. “My Friend, My Hero”, the first of four in a four book series Hoover calls, ‘The Hero Book Series' is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a commemorative edition that includes an addendum of book discussion questions and now available; a full curriculum with a companion Student Success Guidebook, Teacher's Guide, and Unit Assessments containing lesson plans. The goal is to promote Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in the classroom by providing strategies for students to make better choices and gain much needed confidence to support and unleash their inner greatness. Hoover is an award winning author having written the four novellas of his acclaimed, The Hero Book Series with the word ‘hero' within each title by design. “My Friend, My Hero”, “He Was My Hero, Too”, “A Hopeful Hero”, and “Hoop Hero” all have meaning. Hoover states, “Exposing Black and Brown children to a barrage of negative imagery and expecting their positive self-image to remain intact is ridiculous, insensitive, and unfair.”

Mitchell's guest today is long-time friend of A Better World, Michael Jascz, founder of The Relationship Foundation and author of Healthy Relationships 101. Purchase Michael's book, Healthy Relationships 101, here The Relationship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) educational initiative that incorporates a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Healthy Relationships 101, in New York City high schools. We have also published a book by the same title. We use a process called “Nonviolent Communication” (NVC) that gives one the tools to identify and articulate their needs and feelings without blame and judgment. We also teach an approach to listening empathically. Students and teachers alike acknowledge that building a vocabulary of needs and feelings enhances their critical thinking, empathy, and respect. This interview will educate the audience about what this one organization is doing to address the social and educational issues present in our school system among high school students, but even more, the dearth of education in our society about something as fundamental as carrying on harmonious, responsible communication and relationships of all sorts, despite the sustenance of our society pivoting on it. As well as the strides that are being made to remedy this. Mitchell and Michael are old friends and it's a pleasure to share with our audience the good work that Michael is doing for our society. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/abwmitchellrabin/support
