In his book You Are What You Love, James K. A. Smith writes, “It is crucial for us to recognize that our ultimate loves, longings, desires, and cravings are learned.” He also says, “Because if you are what you love, and if love is a virtue, then love is a habit.” The things that make us who we are—the things we love, long for, and desire—don't happen by chance or accident. They happen by practice. Listen in as Dr. Preston Atwood and Sarah McLean discuss the merits of liturgy in the school day—the how, what, when, and why. https://hymnworks.com/product/cantate/

Have you ever wondered how living generously can not only transform your heart but also lead to a deeper encounter with God's abundant love?Hebrews 10:23-25: "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."This message delves into the transformative power of generosity, beginning with a vision of God as a gracious and abundant host who sets the scene for a life of sacrificial giving. It elaborates on how Jesus' teachings advocate for a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity, urging believers to see and live in a world where God's provision is more than sufficient. The heart of Jesus' message points to the importance of aligning our hearts away from greed and toward generosity, emphasizing that our desires often set the course of our lives. It wraps up by suggesting practical steps we can take, such as tithing and contributing towards social justice, to embody a lifestyle of generosity that reflects Jesus' love and thereby provokes love and good deeds within the community. Reflection Questions1. How does viewing God as an abundant host change your perspective on generosity and the resources you have?2. What are some practical ways you can cultivate a heart of generosity in your daily life?3. How can you integrate acts of sacrificial giving into your current routines to better reflect Jesus' love and compassion? To dig deeper read:- Hebrews 10:23-25- Luke 11:34- John 3:16- 2 Corinthians 8:9- Acts 20:35- 2 Corinthians 9- Psalms 23Further Reading1. The race of faith requires discipline. Discipline includes embracing hard circumstances that God sends our way, and also hard choices that we make to fight our own sin. In both cases, we trust that we are God's beloved children, and he wants to redeem our pain to make us more like himself. Because discipline hurts, we must remember that Jesus always goes before us, trusting his Father's will to the point of shedding his blood for us.Some resources on "straightening the path":- Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, Pete Scazzero- The Common Rule, Justin Whitmel Early- Liturgy of the Ordinary, Tish Harrison Warren- You Are What You Love, James K.A. It's about why. From the beginning, God's purpose has been to dwell with His image bearers in unbroken fellowship. It's tempting to think that our sin ruined that plan, and that Jesus was God's Plan B. But as Edward Klink says, Jesus and the Church were always Plan A. More than that, God is not replacing creation; He's renewing it, and you and I have been invited to participate in that renewal as God's agents of redemption. Klink's latest book, The Beginning and End of All Things, will give you a bigger, more accurate perspective on God's plan for creation and your place in it. Not many of us associate discipline, commitment, and obedience with joy and freedom—but today's guest, Pamela Patnode, knows that these things lead to flourishing and joy in the Christian life. When we live according to God's design by loving Him and others, we experience true life. Listen in and let Pamela's testimony encourage you to cultivate a life of commitment to the Lord. Doubts and hard questions are a welcome part of the Christian life. But many young Christians today are being encouraged to “deconstruct” their faith. To help the Church offer a better way to those who are deconstructing, Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett have written The Deconstruction of Christianity. They define what deconstruction really is, why it's appealing to so many, and why it's harmful. They also equip us to love those who are deconstructing by welcoming the hard questions while also upholding truth. Dr. Justin Hannemann, founder of Grace Point Institute for Relational Health settles in for a deep and enlightening conversation. We uncover layers of his life as a husband, father, leader, and advocate for relational health. Together, we examine how relational health sits at the core of our connection with God, ourselves, and others, and how Grace Point Institute is helping mend the scars left by broken relationships. Our conversation takes a fascinating turn as we dig into the intricate link between vocation and relational health. We touch upon an intellectual perspective on neurobiology, discussing how the fall has affected our central nervous system and led to relational dysfunction. Extracting wisdom from James K. Smith's book, "You Are What You Love", we ponder how our life liturgies shape us and consequently, the world. As we wrap up our chat, the significance of confession, absolution, and grace in leadership and relational health comes to light. We dissect how insecurity and ego defense can infuse anxiety into leadership systems, and how confession and absolution can foster more secure leaders. With a backdrop of the importance of grace in counseling, coaching, and leading, we hope and pray for a generation that raises leaders who place relational health and love at the core of it all. Alexandra Tandon, creator of All In My Head, recently appeared on the podcast You Are What You Love to talk about how the 90's television show, Charmed, influenced her as a person and a creator. She and host Marissa Tandon talk about how she discovered the show mid cliffhanger, how the show came into her life during her middle and high school years, and how Charmed showed her women who were powerful and in charge of their own lives, something that differed from the other TV shows she was watching at the time. Tangents include the awkward transition from middle school to high school, the importance of Alex Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place, and whether Hannah Montana's record deal would hold up in the real world. You Are What You Love, a new podcast hosted by the creator of Super Ordinary, is available wherever you get your podcasts now. Each week, Marissa Tandon is joined by a new guest who answers one question: what piece of media changed who you are forever? Each guest brings a new answer, and over the course of the conversation, tries to do something we forget how to do as adults. Be honest and passionate about the one deeply nerdy thing at the core of themselves. Whether it's a billionaire trapped in a cave building a suit of armor, or a teenage girl who finds out she's supposed to stake the undead after class, everyone has a character that made them feel seen for the first time. Each conversation, we try to get to the heart of the piece of media you love so much, because ultimately, you are what you love. Guests have included Lauren Grace Thompson (voice of Kat Wright), Gabriel Urbina (Wolf359, That Vampire Show), Mike Schubert (host of Potterless, The Newest Olympian), and David K. Barnes (creator of Wooden Overcoats). Our habits our forming us, the question is what those habits are forming This is a special conversation built around the book You Are What You Love exploring the formative power of habit. As much as we might like to think otherwise, we are entrenched in a deep deep well of cultural habits and rhythms that are deforming our very being as Christians. The intentional and powerful spiritual power of habits is something that is rarely discussed in our age.
