In this episode we meet Preston Vargas, the director of the Center for Black and Indigenous Praxis, and Deanna Jimenez, Assistant Professor in the Somatic Psychology Department and head of the Emerging Black Clinician Fellowship. We discuss strategies of navigating white academic space as a black scholar, the notion of bodies of culture, the importance of Afrocentric Healing modalities, scholar-activism, the importance of arts, as well some fundamental ideas in the emerging field of Black Psychology. Preston Varvas earned an M.A. in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness as well as a Ph.D. in Transformative Studies from CIIS. He also worked at CIIS as a Teaching Fellow. Preston joins us from the San Francisco Aids Foundation, where he was the Senior Director, Community Partnerships & Engagement. We are thrilled that he will be coming on board to establish the CBIP as a hub for Black and Indigenous thought, wisdoms, and ways of being. Preston carries the blessings, wisdoms, and joys of his ancestors. He was born from the land of his grandmother's ancestral Wampanoag people. It is a place where his liberated Black ancestors found family and home with the local Indigenous communities. It is also the land where his mother's Cape Verdean immigrant ancestors cultivated cranberry bogs and blueberry bushes amidst deciduous forests. Though he lives on the Pacific coast, Preston honors his ancestors, the land-water spirits of Massachusetts who periodically draw him back home. Deanna Jimenez is a somatic/transpersonal psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is Assistant Professor in the Somatic Psychology Department at California Institute of Integral Studies and has a private practice supporting individuals, couples, and organizations. Her clinical work is centered in the dialogue of mental health as it intersects with race, culture, and spirituality. She received a B.A. in International Relations from UC Berkeley studying the efficacy of conflict resolution and cultural awareness in the international workplace. Following a career in corporate and non-profit fields, Deanna received her M.A. from JFK University in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology. Watering the Seeds of Soul A conversation with Holly Truhlar and Erin Geesaman Rabke Find out more about Watering the Seeds of Soul at hollytruhlar.com embodimentmatters.com https://watering-the-seeds-of-soul.mn.co In this conversation we explore how we came into grief work both personally and professionally. We share a bit about what is unique about our approach to grief, including Soul, somatics, the mythopoetic, anti-oppression, biocultural restoration and more. We talk about the Six Gates of Grief as articulated by our dear friend Francis Weller: Everything we love we will lose. The parts of us that have not known love. The sorrows of the world. Grief over destruction of the planet and injustice. What we expected and did not receive. Loss of village and connection. Ancestral Grief from the trials and tribulations of our lineages. The harms we've caused, both personal and collective. We also explore Francis's articulation of the 6 elements of an apprenticeship with sorrow. Practice as a form of ballast. Self-compassion. Staying in our adult presence. Remembering our wild entanglement. Growing a relationship with silence and solitude. Developing right relationship with sorrow. We also dive into why grief work is important in the world today. We hope you enjoy the conversation! What is an Instinctual Stack? Do you know yours? We all have three instincts. None of us are absent one. However, one does tend to be dominant. But what are instincts and how do they influence how each type shows up in the world? Today's guest, Elan Benami, creator of the EnneaApp and author of Enneagram Patterns & Poetics, provides a great overview of Instincts, Subtypes, and the Instinctual Stack and shares how they play out for him in his personal and professional life. – Elan is an LPC with a MA in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology and BA in Philosophy. In addition to his own private counseling practice, Elan is the Clinical Director of People House - a non-profit that provides affordable counseling in Colorado. Elan was introduced to the Enneagram in 2008 by his first therapist. He then did intense studying with Lori Ohlson, who was his supervisor. Claudio Naranjo was Lori's primary teacher, so there is a deep kinship with his work. Other major Enneagram teachers who have shaped Elan include Helen Palmer, Russ Hudson, Don Riso, and Sandra Maitri. Elan and Lori Ohlson have co-facilitated many Enneagram classes/workshops, most of them in the narrative tradition. Through Lori's Enneagram material (of over 25 years of teaching the Enneagram), Elan created the EnneaApp, initially for the purpose of having something to quickly reference between sessions. Through the years, he has adapted the content to be more reflective of his own experience while also preserving Lori's lineage. The app has over 1.5 million downloads. From a very young age, Ellen Boeder had big questions about our collective connectivity and she wanted to fully understand the relationship with herself and with others. At the age of 14, in her first week of high school, she was introduced to a therapist who visited her health class, and it was then that she knew psychology (and personal growth) was the path for her.Fast forward to her first 'real' experience in the field, as a volunteer at a women's prison, Ellen taught creative writing to inmates as a form of therapy and healing. This was the very first time that she had experienced a group of people who were trying to piece their lives back together after immense traumas and hardship. The writing was an exercise in putting all the pieces back together. She recounts what an honor and privilege it was to be trusted and "let in" by these women to help transform their lives. And found a powerful life force watching these women pursue and accomplish amazing things from the darkest of places.Today, after nearly 20 years as a psychotherapist, Ellen is focused on helping women and couples via relationship therapy and couples coaching. Her core belief is that with adequate and effective support, the challenges we face in life can ultimately contribute to our evolution and growth—individually, and collectively. In this episode Ellen talks aboutHer path to helping others with their mental and emotional health, starting with her prison experienceHow all of us can begin to tap into our own feelings by slowing down, reflecting, and feeling safe in our own skinHow being curious can lead to deep impacts for yourself and for othersHow pain and adversity motivates us to change, and why being too comfortable will inhibit our growthWhy communication is the most challenging thing for our relationships to thrive, and how at our best we are all understanding one another only 13% of the time!Ellen's Bio:I pursue training in cutting edge, research based clinical methodologies, as well as the transpersonal practices of meditation, yoga, and energy work. I utilize experiential modalities and body-centered approaches, such as Gestalt and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, which I find deeply enhances the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy. My theoretical stance is informed by family systems theory, attachment theory, and developmental neuroscience, in addition to my contemplative and transpersonal training and studies. “You'll hear people say, we just need to stay high vibe. We just need to have positive thoughts like the universe has us. We're infinitely supported. And although those things are true, if we're not acknowledging where the discomfort or the ‘dis ease’ or the blocks are and we just try to put a Band-Aid over it, we're actually creating resistance.” Andee LoveNow more than ever, people recognize that it’s ok to not be ok all the time. For Andee Love, an Embodiment Facilitator and Coach, working through complicated emotions starts with getting back to the body.On today’s episode of Rock Your Joy, Andee explains the concept of “spiritual bypassing” in which people try so hard to stay positive that they don’t acknowledge painful emotions they may be experiencing. In this episode, we have Dr. Stephanie Dueger, who is known as the “Attachment Doctor” back to talk about the importance of attachment and bonding for optimal human health. She covers some basic information on the definition of attachment, the different attachment styles, and the difference between attachment and bonding. She discusses how parent’s own attachment styles will highly influence how they parent their child and the crucial importance of knowing your own attachment style so that you can work through and hopefully integrate any issues that you have as a parent before your baby is born. Many people are not even aware of how these things can have long term effects on their relationships, and through mindful awareness of our own patterns, we can transform and set a strong foundation of secure attachment for our children. On Ask Win today (Wednesday, January 9, 2019), Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Kendra Miguez. As the director and founder of Colorado Womens Center, Kendra Miguez has worked for many years in the fields of psychotherapy and counseling. After years of running a full private practice focusing solely on womens health, Kendra decided to model what she preached. With grit and grace, she took a leap of faith and opened her own female empowerment center. Her dream quickly became a reality as she soon found herself working in a beautiful environment, surrounded by like-minded professionals who, as a team, expanded the reach within the community, helping as many women as possible access personal empowerment and freedom. Kendra believes that there is an innate goodness and capability for growth in every individual. She uses a nonjudgmental, compassionate approach to assist her clients in finding their own empowerment. Through validation, acceptance, and a strong focus on mindfulness, Kendra meets her clients wherever they are in the growth process. She encourages clients to find themselves within, while she supports them through the shadows. She helps people become their own best friend, because she strongly believes that this type of internal work is necessary for positive transformation. Throughout the process, she uses skills attained from her education in both child and adult psychology to honor the child and the adult within each individual. Kendra is also a long-time practitioner of yoga and strongly believes in the importance of a healthy relationship between the mind and the body. Kendra has specialized training in various modalities of therapy, including Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Client-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), Transpersonal Counseling, Somatic Therapy, Howard Gardners Multiple Intelligences, Yoga and Meditation, and the Enneagram. Kendra holds two Masters degrees in psychology (Educational Psychology from the University of Colorado Denver and Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University). While pursuing her Masters in Educational Psychology, Kendra gained a strong understanding of child development from birth to adulthood. This knowledge allowed her to fully appreciate the cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and educational growth a human being experiences throughout the lifespan. Studying children also allowed her to make close connections with parents, and it was the appreciation of these intimate experiences that ultimately guided her to pursue another Masters degree, this time focusing primarily on adult behavior. In addition, Kendra is a wife to an amazing man who is her greatest supporter. She is also a mother of two young boys and a stepmother of one, all of which keeps her very busy with laughter, adventure, and insurmountable love. In her free time, Kendra enjoys reading, laughing, watching soccer, being in nature, playing with her two goldendoodles, listening to podcasts, learning about space, practicing yoga, researching biology and natural medicine, and spending time with family and friends. Download During this episode of Psychedelics Today, your host Joe Moore interviews Daniel McQueen of Medicinal Mindfulness in Boulder, CO about his DMTx project and some of the reasons he is so interested in the DMTx project. Show Notes What is DMTx Who originated the concept. Dr Rick Strassman and Dr Andrew Gallimore. Daniel's story of a very intense and meaningful DMT experience Much more! Resources Mentioned Medicinal Mindfulness DMTx.org Daniel McQueen, MA Daniel discovered meditation and spiritual practices at twelve and has been interested in exploring inner states ever since. He apprenticed under a number of shamanic teachers and has been a practicing intentional journeyer for over 16 years. For Daniel, working in the professional field of Cannabis and Psychedelics isn’t a career interest, but represents a core identity and life calling. Finding a place to honor such a life calling within a world that has until recently prohibited it has been an interesting challenge. After graduating from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Communication, Daniel traveled down a many forked and unmarked road through the wild terrain of political activism, corporate accountability research and campaign finance reform for many years in Washington, DC. Disillusioned by the city, he moved to Florida and opened a small meditation center to explore grassroots community organizing before moving to Boulder, CO and returning to school at Naropa University. Daniel earned a Masters Degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa and received advanced training in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy through a year internship with the MAPS Boulder MDMA for PTSD Study. It was his experience with MAPS that inspired Daniel to explore alternative visions in cannabis and psychedelic activism and entrepreneurship. Daniel bridges transpersonal paradigms with the grounded clinical and organizational skills necessary to begin addressing the significant ecological and mental health crises facing our society today. Although Daniel no longer practices as a clinical psychotherapist, he supports his clients as a teacher, coach, ally and event facilitator, providing individual and group transformational experiences and deeply held intentional conversations. In his practice, Daniel quickly realized that the most important intervention he could provide to his clients, who were isolated and longed for meaningful contact with others, was a sense of community. Medicinal Mindfulness is, in a very real way, a cultural intervention that provides a safe and transformational community container for healing and awakening... a program based on skill development and not dogma. Since 2012, Daniel has been teaching a psychedelic harm prevention and intentional psychedelic use course called Psychedelic Sitters School. Since the legalization of recreational cannabis in Colorado, he has been facilitating group journey experiences called Conscious Cannabis Events and guiding individual cannabis journeys. In addition to his work with Medicinal Mindfulness, Daniel has a successful spirituality and life coaching practice with his wife, Alison, through their company, Aspenroots Counseling LLC. Highly skilled in identifying and cultivating giftedness in young people and supporting significant life transitions, Daniel is inspired to support passionate and talented individuals striving to live into their calling. A primary focus of his practice involves assessing and addressing the benefits and difficulties related to psychedelic and cannabis use and misuse. Daniel co-founded the Naropa Alliance for Psychedelic Studies and helped organize the first annual Psychedelic Symposium at Naropa University in 2012. About Medicinal Mindfulness Medicinal Mindfulness® LLC and Medicinal Mindfulness Events LLC Medicinal Mindfulness is a grassroots consciousness community/membership organization and education program that supports individuals and groups who choose to use cannabis and psychedelics with intention. Founded by Daniel McQueen, MA, and his wife, Alison McQueen, MA, our community has come together to provide an enjoyable, safe, open and affirming space to share transformational cannabis and breathwork experiences. We use clinically informed, mindfulness-based approaches within a somatically oriented, transpersonal and community paradigm to create an holistic (mind, body, spirit) process that initiates powerful transformations in healing and personal development. Services are available for individuals, couples, families and groups. Given the common misunderstandings and concerns that accompany the field of psychedelics and cannabis harm prevention and advocacy, we are committed to making ourselves available to public service and safety professionals to answer questions regarding psychedelic and cannabis harm reduction programs.

Download Daniel McQueen of Medicinal Mindfulness joins us to talk about extended-state DMT research, also known as DMTx. Daniel has been presenting this idea at local events in the Colorado area to help raise awareness and money to help bring this research idea to life. To learn more about this project, upcoming events, or to donate to help fund the research check out DMTx.org Here is a quick message from Daniel: A few years ago we started a community gathering and speaker series called Psychedelic Shine, and it was through this project that I met Dr. Rick Strassman, Dr. Dennis McKenna, and Dr. Andrew Gallimore, to name a few. The process of creating psychedelic inspired programs, meeting innovative leaders in the field, and also the inner exploration this work requires, were all factors that initiated this journey into exploring Extended-State DMT research. It has been a wild and wonderful ride ever since, and we're excited to step into the next stage of this work. It is our intention to create a sustainable, multi-generation DMT research program that is both congruent with scientific inquiry, as well as with the creative and spiritual interests and values of the psychedelic community. We believe Extended-State DMT research is as much an expedition as it is a scientific experiment. We believe it is both deeply inspiring and practically feasible. In this episode, Dr. Stephanie Dueger is going to talk about what it looks like to confront the beginning of the attachment process when it’s occurring in infants and toddlers, rather than looking at the regressive psychotherapies once the imprints have already been established for decades. How much time in your life have you spent thinking about your early childhood? From a neuroscience perspective we actually can’t remember that many specific details before age seven, meaning the cognitive narrative is more amorphous from the very early years in our development. This leaves many unanswered questions about the mystery of our first few years in life. But those first years of development are extremely relevant from an attachment perspective for future relationships, resiliency, mental health and the ability to reach your potential. This episode will open up a new look into the intricacies of attachment and bonding during infancy, and why it’s so important to have a thorough understanding of that process. You’re going to get to learn about what psychotherapy looks like with a child in the first few years of their life and how to help repair any attachment issues that can occur at that stage. You’ll also gain an understanding on how an early-childhood therapist removes themselves enough to promote healthy bonding between the parent and child. Our guest today, Stephanie Dueger, has been providing psychotherapy in private practice for more than a decade. Dr. Dueger received her MA from Naropa University in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is currently the Book Editor for the Journal for the Association of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health. Dr. Dueger has presented at international conferences on prenatal and perinatal psychology and is in the process of completing a book about parenthood. In this episode you’ll learn: Removing the therapist from the attachment process with an infant and parent The neuroscience behind the first years of development and the attachment process Signs of healthy and unhealthy attachment in infants Parental influence on attachment issues versus child developmental impasses Are children born with attachment struggles? A personal story about the birthing process Visit www.higherpractice.com/podcast to get the show notes for this episode and to learn more about Dr. Dueger’s full course in the Higher Practice Institute.
Download Sara Gael joins us on this week's episode. Sara is the Director of Harm Reduction at the Zendo Project. We get into some great stuff including some of Zendo's biggest wins, how Zendo works, how to discuss harm reduction with festival organizers, and how to manage difficult experiences that arise in the Zendo. Something interesting that we learned during this talk was how law enforcement at Burning Man has really been interested in learning more about Zendo and their services, and requested Zendo to help train their staff. Sara also shares her experience and insights working on the MAPS Phase 2 MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD trials and how she got involved in psychedelic research. We also explore how transpersonal psychology can serve as an important framework for working with psychedelic experiences. The Zendo Project The Zendo Project is sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Zendo provides harm reduction services to the community and to festivals. Zendo strives to: Reduce the number of psychiatric hospitalizations and arrests. Create an environment where volunteers can work alongside one another to improve their harm reduction skills and receive training and feedback. Demonstrates that safe, productive psychedelic experiences are possible without the need for law enforcement-based prohibitionist policies. Sara was an Intern Therapist for the recently completed MAPS Phase 2 clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD in Boulder, CO. Sara believes that developing a comprehensive understanding of psychedelic medicines through research and education is essential for the health and well being of individuals, communities, and the planet. Community is an important part of integration. One of the most difficult aspects of integration is returning to a society that doesn’t understand or support psychedelic exploration. In fact, re-entering society can feel like a stark contrast between the interconnected, transpersonal state of the psychedelic experience. Therefore, one of most important tools for successful integration is a supportive, understanding community.
