This episode is a Writing Life special, featuring an hour of new writing read by the writers on this year's National Centre for Writing Escalator programme - recorded earlier this year at the showcase event, here at Dragon Hall. Melody Bowles Bang Wang Ben Cartwright Shirley Day Isabelle Higgins Adam Leeder Joanna Miller Carrie Patten Rick Roydes Mark Stocker Escalator is our talent development programme. And each year, we look for ambitious, challenging, unconventional and affecting new voices in fiction writing from the East of England. The region is made up of a diverse society of people, and supporting writers who are under-represented on UK bookshelves has become a core objective of the project. The programme has been running since 2004 and includes eight months of mentoring, training, guidance and networking for participants. To date we've supported more than 130 writers, many of whom have gone on to sign with agents, publish and win awards and critical recognition for their novels and short stories. We had a fantastic group of writers in 2022 and we hosted them here for the annual Escalator Showcase event where they all read from their work. This is the audio from that event. https://nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk/escalator/

Robert Jauron is a graduate of Swampscott High School, Brown University, and Suffolk University Law School and practiced law for 37 years before retiring in 2014. Thereafter he decided to write a book. He is the author of Big Blue Days - The Story of a Small-Town Football Dynasty in Swampscott Massachusetts. The book, published in 2018, tells the story of legendary high school football coach Stan Bondelevitch and the remarkably successful program he established and led in Swampscott during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. It is based on extensive archival research, interviews of more than 50 individuals, and the author's own experiences (as Bob played football in Swampscott on Bondelevitch-coached teams in the mid-1960s). In writing the story Bob hoped to provide an understanding of why he and many others recall those bygone years in Swampscott "as special times in a special place”. According to the Lynn Item's front-page review of Big Blue Days:"This book has it all: warm anecdotes, good insight into some of the era's greatest players, and — most of all — a fascinating character study of the man who made it all possible: Stanley Walter Bondelevitch.”Website is www.bigbluedaysbook.comBooks can be purchased through a link on the website and can also be ordered directly from Amazon - search “Big Blue Days”.
