Arab Digest editor William Law welcomes back the Levant expert Dr Lina Khatib to discuss the war in Lebanon. Dr Khatib argues that Hezbollah though significantly degraded continues to play a spoiler role and that until a solution is found that ends the Israeli-American war against Iran Lebanon will continue to suffer further collateral damage. She also argues that with the war over Israel will have no choice but to pull out of Lebanon. The regional war that started on 28 February 2026 with US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran has engulfed Lebanon, Israel and the Gulf states. Meting out destruction, death and disillusion on all sides, 40 days of conflict stopped with US President Trump threatening to wipe out Iranian civilisation — to the horror of many around the world — and a fragile ceasefire agreed on April 7th, with negotiations to follow.Conventional wisdom has it that everyone lost, though the Iranian regime remains in place — so it has, in its way, won. But maybe not. The Iranian proxies — sometimes known as the Shia Crescent or else the Axis of Resistance — have been crucial to Iran's ambition as a regional power and to the justification of the post-1979 revolutionary state. But the Crescent has been severely crippled, and possibly broken, leaving the regime in dire need to fight for its survival — both internally, as with the protests that broke out in January and were brutally repressed, and externally, with the current war.In a magnificent survey of Iran, its proxies and the states afflicted, Prof Lina Khatib of both the Harvard Belfer Center and Chatham House explains the logic of the proxies to those in power in Iran and the deep need of the Iranian regime to fight — for its survival. These are historic shifts: violent, destructive and painful. But they may be necessary to create a new, more peaceful Middle East.A sharp, insightful and very fascinating conversation. This episode was recorded on 9 April 2026ChaptersImplications of the US-Iran ceasefireDebunking Iran's “dark” ideology and its enemiesThe degradation of Iran's proxy model (Hezbollah, Hamas, Iraqi militia, Houthis)The evolution of Iran's influence on its neighbours (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Israel)The end of the status quo in the Middle EastMentionsLina's article “The degradation of Iran's Proxy Model” Harvard Kennedy School“Israel to open direct talks with Lebanon but not halt attacks on Hezbollah” The Washington PostLina's article “Syria's Lessons for Regime Change in Iran” Foreign PolicyFollowLina Khatib LinkedIn & websiteChatham House mailing list (research, comment and events)Ilana Bet-ElInstagram @women_leaders_podcastListen this episode on our YouTube channelOur partner European Leadership Network Twitter LinkedIn Facebook websiteCreditsProduction: Florence FerrandoMusic: Let Good Times Roll, RA from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/ra/let-good-times-rollLicense code: ZXIIIJUU2ISPZIJTContribute to the conversation with a comment & a 5-⭐️Reach us on our Instagram and follow for updates @women_leaders_podcastWatch now our episode on Youtube Hosted on Acast.

To mark the 250th milestone episode of my podcast, I've chosen a conversation that highlights how empathy can unite us in our common humanity. My guest, Sulaiman Khatib, is a co-founder of Combatants for Peace, twice nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. In our conversation, he describes personal transformation that isn't neat or performative. Instead, he speaks of the slow, rigorous inner work of moving from rage and resistance to nonviolence and what he calls a “third narrative.” It's a conversation about the dual political and spiritual dimensions of empathy - one that rejects dehumanization and understands that extending empathy is never a zero-sum game.I hope you'll watch it with an open heart for what is possible.Next week's episode continues my commitment to holding multiple truths with care, in a conversation with Rabbi Lisa Grushcow about the rise of antisemitism and the urgent need for moral courage and purposeful empathy across communities and different lived experiences. What does it take to see our common humanity in the middle of a conflict designed to divide? In this special series devoted to widening our circle of empathy for people who often feel marginalized or misunderstood, watch this rare and powerful conversation with Sulaiman Khatib, a Palestinian peacebuilder, co-founder of Combatants for Peace, and author of In This Place Together.Sulaiman shares his journey from being incarcerated as a teenager after an act of violence, to his inner transformation behind bars, shaped by hunger strikes and the spiritual teachings of Gandhi, Mandela and Dr. King. He describes how “humanizing the other” is a daily practice that takes discipline, and is tested again and again, especially in the middle of an ongoing crisis that's marked by loss and trauma.Together, we discuss:The personal costs of changing one's worldview when “sides” are deeply entrenchedWhy believing “there is no military solution” is seen as provocative (or even a betrayal)What shared humanity looks like when the stakes are life and deathWhy pain is not a contest and how empathy makes space for multiple truthsThis conversation is about refusing dehumanization—and daring to imagine a future where safety, freedom, and dignity belong to everyone.00:00 Preview00:56 Introduction 02:54 About Sulaiman Khatib06:09 Sulaiman's backstory10:07 What does it mean to be detained as a minor?13:08 Sulaiman's path to non-violence and moral repair18:13 How curiosity and language humanize conflict20:57 Why is there no military solution to the Palestinian-Israeli war?24:35 About Combatants for Peace, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize28:50 What does shared humanity really mean?36:24 The need for humility in peace work42:06 The importance of third narratives (especially in conflicts)44:58 The role of inner transformation49:31 About Sulaiman's book, In This Place Together56:37 What headlines miss about everyday Palestinian life01:0153    Why peace requires radical imagination01:06:37   Sulaiman Khatib's Purposeful Empathy storyCONNECT WITH SULAIMAN✩ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/sulaiman-khatib-904a4645/✩ Combatants for Peace https://www.cfpeace.org/✩ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/combatantsforpeace_english/ ✩ In This Place Together: A Palestinian's Journey to Collective Liberation https://www.amazon.com/This-Place-Together-Palestinians-Collective/dp/0807046825✩ Disturbing the Peace https://www.disturbingthepeacefilm.com/✩ There Is Another Way https://thereisanotherwayfilm.com/CONNECT WITH ANITA✩ Email purposefulempathy@gmail.com ✩ Website https://www.anitanowak.com✩ Buy a copy of Purposeful Empathy http://tiny.cc/PurposefulEmpathyCA✩ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/anitanowak/✩ Instagram https://tinyurl.com/anitanowakinstagram✩ Podcast Audio https://tinyurl.com/PurposefulEmpathyPodcast✩ Bluesky https://bsky.app/profile/anitanowak.bsky.socialVideo edited by Jad Misri, Green Horizon Studio

“There is another way.” Julie Rose sits down with Sulaiman Khatib, two-time Noble Peace Prize nominee and co-founder of Combatants for Peace. As a teenager, Khatib, a Palestinian, was imprisoned for attacking Israeli soldiers.

They killed a two year-old girl in the West Bank on Saturday. Laila al-Khatib was shot in the head by Israeli forces in Jenin, because I guess they needed one more dead Palestinian kid. One more dead Palestinian kid to add to the mountain. One more small Palestinian face raining down upon us in our nightmares like meteors on the dinosaurs in the prequel to this apocalypse. One more screaming, blood-spattered mother. One more grandfather with boulders for feet carrying the tiny shrouded form of someone who should have buried him. It's one more dead Palestinian kid. One more snowflake in the blizzard. And yet here I sit, mouth agape, a mortally wounded polar bear in my chest and a cry of despair turning into a ghost and leaving me silent and slack-jawed like an imbecile. I want to crawl into my childhood crib and fall asleep forever. I want to turn into a crystal punch bowl and fall and shatter on a marble floor. The air is full of flapping, and there's seaweed in my hair. There's an angel with a mushroom cloud head in my doorway. They killed a two year-old girl in the West Bank on Saturday, because I guess they needed another one. I write her name on some paper and send it off into the wind, and stride back into the suburban ghost town with my body on fire. Reading by Tim Foley.

From a SAND Community Gathering in January 2024. You can watch the full video of this Community Gathering here: scienceandnonduality.com/event/bloodlines/ As many of us grapple with feelings of disillusionment, outrage, impotence and grief at the horrendous tragedy unfolding in Gaza, we gathered as a SAND community for an intimate conversation with meital yaniv, an ex-israeli soldier / ex-zionist fighter and Sulaiman Khatib, Palestinian co-founder of Combatants for Peace. With meital and Souli reflecting on their personal journeys of loss and transformation, we uncovered ancestral legacies of trauma and coping, belonging and indoctrination, individual and collective grief, awakening, and resilience. Their dialog was facilitated by Rae Abileah, a Jewish faith leader, social change strategist, and writer. Through sharing our stories, and engaging in open and compassionate conversation, may we find collective healing. Sulaiman Khatib is the Co-Founder of Combatants for Peace. Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, he has been recognized internationally for his contributions to promoting peace, social justice and equality for all. In 2006, he co-founded Al-Qud's Association for Democracy and Dialogue, a program which works with youth in order to create effective and sustainable projects focusing on the promotion of peace, democracy and civic participation in the Palestinian Territories. For the last twenty years, he has been a committed advocate for peace in the Middle East and an active member of various programs aiming to promote a peaceful solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He is the author of In this Place Together. meital yaniv was born into a sephardic and ashkenazi lineage of in/famous war heroes and pillars for the state of israel, meital is the author of bloodlines, an epic and intimate dive into the israeli apartheid regime from the perspective of an ex-israeli/ex-zionist soldier. In the book, meital yaniv traces their paternal family narrative from surviving the Holocaust of the second world war to migrating to Palestine and their subsequent indoctrination as zionist colonizers and defenders of the state of israel. yaniv directs our attention to the cycles of history and how genocide not only repeats but grows monstrously in the crevices of state belonging. They see themselves as “a death laborer tending to a prayer for the liberation of the land of Palestine and the lands of our bodies.” Rae Abileah (she/her) is a Jewish faith leader, social change strategist, writer, and facilitator. This week Lara and Michael sit down with student and activist Soha Khatib, a senior at UIC and board member at Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at her University. We discuss the events that led up to her and her classmates teaming up with Palestine Legal to file a civil rights lawsuit against the University for their disparate treatment of Palestinian students. She explains how she and other members of SJP were barred from entering an informational Zoom setting pertaining to a study abroad program inside 48. While flyering she explains the university staff called the cops and one police officer grabbed a female student by her hijab. She also tells us about subsequent meetings she's had with study-abroad personnel and the climate for Palestinian activists on campus at UIC. The episode speaks to the overall connections between oppressive state forces like the police, zionist think tanks, and higher education institutions in the United States.
