Less than halfway through this podcast, Andy asks the assembled group if this will be the "longest episode ever." As you could probably imagine, he was right. Per usual, he's joined by Brendan!, KVV, and PJ as they finally get through the first major of 2025 for the annual Year in Review. KVV, or more accurately known as "K-J Hawk," starts off the show with a recap of the Valspar Championship. He closes out the Florida Swing with notes from Viktor Hovland's improbable win in a Sunday duel against Justin Thomas before Andy and Brendan run through the two Texas events preceding the Masters. At the Texas Children's Houston Open, Dr. Chipinski didn't make any calls late on Sunday but was able to secure a big win over Gary Woodland, Scottie Scheffler, and Alejandro Tosti. Andy also has the honor of recapping the first-ever TGL Finals during Houston week, which leads to a debate about re-naming the SoFi Dome after Billy Horschel. Brendan is tasked with detailing Brian Harman's runaway win at the Valero Texas Open, but is also sure to note that the Cleeks were "trying to become the Yankees" and plenty of other LIV news from the tour's week in Miami. The last two hours of this episode are spent recapping "the tournament of a lifetime," the 2025 Masters. Andy, Brendan, and Kevin each share the biggest moments and memories from different parts of the week, resulting in a comprehensive recap of Rory McIlroy's triumphant completion of the career grand slam. Using their on-the-ground insights and usual research findings, the three provide a detailed picture of one of the great moments in golf history. The 2025 Year in Review will return on Monday as the dawn on Don Rea inches closer and closer.
Don LaGreca joins to say he needs to wait and see what the Mets put on the field before he can get mad. What moves do you want to see the Yankees make? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Dallas real estate CEO Robert “Bob” Lovell was ordered this week to pay $5.7 million in damages and fees after a judge determined he repeatedly forced a former employee to perform sex acts and then retaliated against her when she refused. In other news, some Texans are finding out from their doctor's offices that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas insurance plan would no longer be considered in-network; the Texas Rangers are not interested in trading Corey Seager. The Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves have all expressed interest though; and for years, officials at the highest level of Dallas city government knew crime was a problem at Roseland, a public housing complex in Old East Dallas. In twenty eighteen, the city entered into a special agreement with Dallas Housing Authority to keep crime in check. That arrangement was different from what was at the time a new, aggressive plan to protect the public at high-crime private properties. Police reports show that since the agreement was signed, at least seven people have been killed at Roseland, including a nine-year-old girl. Twenty others were wounded by gunfire. A Dallas Morning News investigation shows that over the following seven years, the agreement was never fully followed, and the violent crime at Roseland persisted. The News found numerous ways in which D-H-A and the city fell short in addressing crime and protecting residents, including failures to follow their own agreement. Most travel ball parents focus on the wrong things — more reps, more tournaments, more lessons, more mechanics, more "fixes." But in this episode of The Most Valuable Agent, MLB agent Matt Hannaford brings together two of baseball's most respected insiders to reveal what actually develops a player: • Hugh Quattlebaum — former MLB hitting coach, coordinator, and father of three boys in the youth baseball world • Gus Quattlebaum — Vice President of Scouting Development & Integration for the Boston Red Sox Together, they break down the essential (and often misunderstood) ingredients that help players become confident, adaptable, self-aware competitors — not just hitters with pretty mechanics. Hugh shares lessons from his upcoming book on youth development, while Gus provides rare insight into how scouts truly evaluate players, what stands out, and what hurts a young athlete's projection. You'll learn why players should fail more, why aggression beats perfection, why kids must learn to coach themselves, and why "zoo tiger" development is holding thousands of players back. If you're a parent, coach, or player navigating travel baseball today, this is the conversation you never get — directly from the people who work with elite athletes at the highest levels of the game. Subscribe for weekly MLB development tools, scouting insight, and strategy for baseball families. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • Why "control the controllables" is the foundation of great development • The difference between conditional vs. unconditional confidence • Why aggression is a competitive advantage — and passivity kills performance • How parents unintentionally create fear, confusion, and hesitation • The power of game-like reps vs. traditional drills • How major league teams train hitters to prepare for real in-game chaos • What scouts actually look for: decision-making, adjustments, process • How to teach players to coach themselves — and why it matters long-term • Why individualization beats one-size-fits-all mechanics every time • The dangers of TikTok hitting trends & constant tinkering • How to design practice with the end in mind • What it really means to "love the game more at 18 than at 8" ABOUT GUS QUATTLEBAUM Vice President, Scouting Development & Integration — Boston Red Sox Gus oversees professional scouting, integration, and evaluation strategy for the Red Sox after decades in MLB scouting across multiple organizations. His career includes influential roles with the Yankees, Orioles, Expos, and Red Sox, shaping amateur, pro, and international scouting systems. He is known for his process-driven approach, holistic evaluation, and deep expertise in player projection. ABOUT HUGH QUATTLEBAUM Professional Hitting Coach Hugh has coached hitters at every level of professional baseball — including serving as Major League Hitting Coach for the New York Mets and Assistant Hitting Coach for the Atlanta Braves. He has led hitting development departments, coordinated minor league systems, and built player plans for elite hitters. As a father of three young ballplayers, Hugh brings a unique blend of big-league expertise and real-world youth baseball experience. ABOUT MATT HANNAFORD Matt Hannaford is a 25-year MLB agent and founder of Aligned Sports. He has negotiated historic contracts, represented MVPs and All-Stars, and now delivers weekly insights on development, scouting, and the business of baseball. SEASON 4 EPISODE 38: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: It’s not simple gaslighting about the price of gas: It’s neurological disintegration; obsessive repetition of the same lie. He has now - for the 14th time in 28 weeks - announced with shock and excited surprise that gas has "just hit" $1.98 a gallon (or "$1.99" or "under $2.00"). It's not just a lie; it's something he heard, could not understand in the first place, and is repeating at regular intervals as if he just heard it moments earlier. It is a classic sign of neurological crisis. And it is proof that invoking the 25th Amendment is imperative. And won’t happen. Any more than Trump realizing he already TOLD that lie. ALSO: Jack Smith still has a way to make the second half of his report convicting Trump public, while it turns out he tried to get rid of Aileen Cannon a year ago. It is also becoming increasingly apparent that ESPN's Stephen A. Smith may be the Jill Stein of 2028 - a stalking horse pretending to be a Democrat while being pushed by fascists. We know this much: he's mailing it in. He thinks the name of the governor of Florida is named "Ron Santis." AND TRUMP AND MELANIA talking about "Pile Driving" at night in the White House? That must be the first time in eighteen years. B-Block (35:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Shamwow guy is back and, what else, running for Congress as a MAGA because he can't keep this up all day. Bari Weiss obviously never saw the Mary Tyler Moore Show: she's fired her old CBS News Anchors before she's fired her NEW CBS News Anchors. And Jake Tapper really does it: after he put his thumb on the scale for Trump in the Biden debate and wrote a book and sold it on CNN about Biden's acuity, he's defending Trump's mental instability. C-Block (42:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Hal Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees whose franchise has increased in value by three billion in just the last four years, is trying to convince people that maybe the Yankees aren't profitable. This is clownage as old as sports itself: the saga of the year the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers insisted "we lost two million last year!"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 2025 edition of the baseball winter meetings is officially underway in Orlando, Florida, and the Baseball Bar-B-Cast crew is on the scene. This is normally the week when deals start to bloom and big free agents are plucked from the tree. Just last year we saw Juan Soto and the New York Mets agree to a deal, as well as Max Fried joining the New York Yankees, so you never know what might happen. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman give their thoughts on what might happen at the meetings this year and the things they're looking forward to, including the annual Scott Boras free-agent pitch. They then talk about Jeff Kent being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee and why it'll be at least five years until Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds possibly get their last shot at enshrinement.Later, Jake and Jordan talk about the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, and Pittsburgh Pirates all making trades with their hopes set on 2026, as well as a few free agents coming off the board. Then they get into the Sonny Gray vs. Yankees drama that has developed following the news that he wasn't happy to join the Yankees in 2017.1:25 – The Opener: 2025 Winter Meetings17:00 – Jeff Kent elected to Hall of Fame24:47 – Around the League: Trades going down42:42 – Free agents signing47:51 – We Need To Talk About: Gray vs. Yankees53:45 – Field Report: Winter League edition Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. There is no bumper sticker, no buzzy campaign slogan that captures the challenge facing Major League Baseball and its 30 clubs as economic disparity grows and the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement arrives. A complex issue requires a complex solution. Or does it? A brief conversation about the Cardinals' spending strategy and past history with free agency, based on research done for The Write Fielder newsletter, spirals into a much larger debate between Best Podcast in Baseball host Derrick Goold and guest Kevin Wheeler, of KMOX/104.1 FM. After detailing how the Cardinals got into their current predicament, the questions that follow are two-fold: Do the Cardinals need to change their approach to free agency to return to contention, and does MLB need to change its economic structure for the Cardinals to have a new approach to free agency. The debate ignites from there. Wheeler makes a compelling case for how the Cardinals needed to "swim in deeper waters" for free agency and a more conservative approach caught up with them. He adds that a team now focused on development needs to produce its own stars. Goold counters by wondering what World Series contenders have developed their star and not had to outfit the roster with free-agent moves to complete the championship-caliber roster. The Yankees may have Aaron Judge, and they used prospects to trade for Juan Soto once, but they also signed Gerrit Cole. The Kansas City Royals have a homegrown, bona fide star in Bobby Witt Jr. But what's next? That's where the economics of the game enter the conversation and Wheeler's stance that the "big boys" need to play ball for the betterment of the game, and if that means taking less or receiving a smaller cut to spur and require the spending of the smaller markets so be it. Goold makes a suggestion for pulling that off that Wheeler contends would be difficult to sell to fans who what the tangible bumper sticker, not the boring details of how it gets done. Eventually they agree on one. It's the TV deal. Wheeler's arguments that hinge on a comparison to the NBA and its salary cap format require there to be a much larger national TV deal, one closer to what the NBA has. And that is the crux of this. Once that's in place then negotiations about a salarly floor, shared revenue, and an international draft to better balance talent coming from abroad are all more tangible because the largest issue -- the growing gulch between teams -- has been bridged.
