This week on Korea Pro, we kick off the discussion with President Yoon Suk-yeol's controversial youth policy and its implications amid accusations of populism ahead of the parliamentary elections. The conversation then shifts to the strategic implications of the U.S. and South Korea hastening their defense cost-sharing negotiations, a move influenced by the looming possibility of Donald Trump's return to the White House. We also unpack the recent decision allowing nurses to perform certain tasks like CPR amid the country's ongoing doctors' strike, highlighting the irony in Yoon's past veto of a bill that would have clarified nurses' roles. Finally, we analyze the trend within South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party as it faces an exodus of high-profile lawmakers, shedding light on the potential ramifications for the party's future and the upcoming general elections. In this episode of All Things Policy, Carl Jaison speaks to Sudhanshu Kaushik, author of “The Future is Ours: The Political Promise of India's Youth”. Sudhanshu is an international youth activist and the founder of Young India Foundation (YIF). With a focus on youth empowerment, the highlights of his work at YIF included initiatives registering over 2.5 million youth voters, lobbying with over 200 sitting MPs and five state governments to decrease the age to contest elections as an MP/MLA and building the Centre for Youth Policy. With a focus on youth rights and representation, Sudhanshu's book is at its very heart a passionate call to lower the age of candidacy from 25 to 21 — a campaign that covers all sides of the political spectrum and, if successful, will bring a huge number of India's young directly into the democratic process. Much beloved Australian Music Festival Splendour in the Grass has been forced to issue a statement to ticket holders, declaring that patrons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a 'responsible adult'. Their statement in full reads: Dear Splendour community, On Friday night all of our underage ticketholders received an email from Moshtix informing them of late developments regarding Splendour's Liquor License. In a nutshell, the message was this… ALL PATRONS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A RESPONSIBLE ADULT AT ALL TIMES WHILST AT THE EVENT AND CAMPGROUNDS. This is not Splendour's decision. These new rules have been imposed on us by NSW Police. We were only informed of this late Thursday and we are very unhappy about these major changes being forced on the festival at such a late stage. We understand the impact it will have on many of our patrons. We also don't want you to walk away with a fine. So we want you all to be aware that Police will be present at the event, roaming throughout the crowd checking that underage minors are with a responsible adult. Considerable fines may apply if not compliant. Splendour will also be in breach of our liquor licence, which will have major consequences. More information can be found in our FAQs and our Youth Policy. The ONLY place you can purchase tickets for accompanying responsible adults is via the resale facility, where all monies go to the previous ticket holder. To register as a responsible adult accompanying a minor, please fill out this FORM. Best wishes, Splendour in the Grass Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. This one is controversial, I know…   Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Eric Janus, of the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, as well as, Ira Ellman, of the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss the controversial topic of sex offender registries and how our criminal justice system handles perpetrators of sexual violence.   In today’s episode, Aaron, Ira, and Eric, discuss the rights of sex offenders, the way in which our courts treat these cases, and why it is important to re-consider how we think about punishment for sex crimes. Both professors and scholars in this area, Eric and Ira explain their work in the field and why it is they believe things need to change. Ira, Eric, and Aaron talk about today’s social science surrounding sex offender punishment, delving into ideas on prevention, rates of recidivism, banishment laws, and more. What are the rights of sex offenders? What should they be? And, is our system working?   A graduate of Harvard Law, Professor Janus’ scholarly focus has been on constitutional and public policy considerations in the development of regulatory approaches to sexual violence prevention. Eric’s book, Failure to Protect: America’s Sexual Predator Laws and the Rise of the Preventive State, was published by Cornell University Press and explores how “preventative laws” are in reality counterproductive. His latest book, Sexual Predators: Society, Risk and the Law, examines the Sexually Violent Predator laws of each state and considers their constitutionality, as well as aspects of their operations. In 2017, Professor Janus established the Sex Offense Litigation and Policy Resource Center at Mitchell Hamline. He serves as the center’s director in its efforts to provide support for impact litigation and policy-reform work designed to produce constitutional, effective, humane and empirically sound sex offense policies.   Professor Ellman is a Distinguished Professor of Law and an Affiliate Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University. Ira has spent the largest part of his career studying family law. A faculty member of A.S.U since 1978, Ira is also an Affiliate Faculty Member of the Center for Child and Youth Policy at Berkeley and a Distinguished Affiliated Scholar at Berkley’s Center for The Study of Law and Society. His current research is focused on the legal policy applied to sex offenders, especially those convicted of possession of erotic images of minors.     For more information on Professor Eric Janus, please visit his bio page here. High unemployment rates among teens and young adults have caught the attention of the popular press, policymakers, and many others. Labor market participation – working or actively seeking work – has fallen for these groups at alarming rates since 2000, especially for teens. While the declines have affected all young worker demographic groups, unemployment is even more acute for young people of color who have lower levels of labor market attachment overall. Research shows that unemployment and underemployment for young adults will have lasting consequences in the form of repressed wages, decreased upward mobility, and lessened productivity over their work lives. Society at large loses, too, in terms of lost tax revenues and productivity and increased public benefits. What is causing these trends? Is the economy experiencing structural or cyclical changes that would explain it? Is it sluggish job growth or technology? Have employers just altered their preferences? This panel explores trends in young adult workforce participation and potential factors driving them. Panelists take a close look at the role employers and stronger connections to employers can play in helping teens and young adults access career-launching work experience. Panelists also discuss policies that may be contributing to the problem as well as those that may help to improve young worker access to early work experience and economic prosperity. This event features Lashon Amado (National Coordinator of Opportunity Youth United Community Action Teams), Amy Barad (Director of Strategic Initiatives, Cowen Institute, Tulane University), Kisha Bird (Director of Youth Policy, CLASP), Paul Harrington, Ph.D. (Director, Center for Labor Markets and Policy, Drexel University), Tammy Simmons (Vice President of Marketing & Culture, Machine Specialties Inc.), and moderator Melanie Trottman (Labor and Economics Reporter, The Wall Street Journal). This event is part of the Working in America series, an ongoing discussion series hosted by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program that highlights an array of critical issues affecting low- and moderate-income workers in the United States and ideas for improving and expanding economic opportunities for working people. For more information, visit as.pn/workinginamerica. The Economic Opportunities Program advances strategies, policies, and ideas to help low- and moderate-income people thrive in a changing economy. Fighting Poverty, Strengthening New York - A podcast from the Community Service Society

For our inaugural episode, we tackle the idea of universal summer jobs for all New York City youth. In February of 2016 Lazar Treschan, Director of Youth Policy at CSS, produced a report proposing the idea that all students who want one should have access to summer employment. Not only should they get a job, but that job should be connected integrated with their schooling. In this podcast, we hear from David R. Jones, the President and CEO of CSS, about our proposal and why summer jobs are so important for young people. Then we head up to the Bronx to see first-hand one school that is working hard to provide meaningful summer employment to their students; and we end up at a boat building workshop on the Bronx River.
