Do you wear "busy" as a badge of honor while still feeling behind? You're not alone. In this powerful conversation with productivity expert Jones Loflin, author of Focused as a Bee, we explore how busyness may be the very thing blocking your goals. Drawing from the focused nature of honeybees, Jones shows that true productivity comes not from doing more, but from doing what truly matters.Through his TAD framework (Transfer, Automate, Drop), Jones shares practical ways to reclaim your time. He explains how identifying the "micro purpose" behind tasks, breaking projects into small “one jobs,” and even embracing rest—like bees taking 40 naps a day—can boost your effectiveness and reduce burnout.Jones also uncovers the three main distractions hurting your focus: internal thoughts, external noise, and unclear expectations. His simple strategies help you minimize interference and maximize impact. The key takeaway: performance improves when we remove what's getting in the way. So—what will you eliminate today?

Are you focused or merely busy? Jones Loflin sits down with Kevin to reveal the secret of focus, inspired by honeybees. Jones introduces six essential "permissions" that individuals must grant themselves and emphasizes their particular importance for leaders, who not only need to practice these permissions personally but also guide their team members to recognize and adopt them. These permissions include: The Permission to Prioritize – Bees prioritize maintaining the hive before making honey. How can we identify our most critical goals? The Permission to Plan – Similar to how bees prepare for changing conditions, how can we proactively set ourselves up for success? The Permission to Be Unavailable – Constant accessibility can hinder productivity. How can leaders create an environment conducive to deep work? The Permission to Recharge – Bees rest more than they work. What lessons can we draw from this behavior? The Permission to Change – Often, we stick to habits that are no longer beneficial. How can we embrace necessary changes? The Permission to Be Consistent – Although change is crucial, success frequently arises from disciplined, repeated actions. SHARE THE WORK -- RSVP to join us March 10th-14th Making Art Work opens for enrollment March 13th! Hi sweeties. I've moved into my new studio and settled into my work (getting ready for Share The Work, writing, and teaching), but painting? That's a different story. Let's talk about what it means to find success in your creative practice year after year. As I continue focusing on creating meaningful art, I find myself thinking so much about Picasso's career and why it's important to honor our personal version of growth, no matter how it unfolds. In this episode, we'll explore: Realizing You're Always Growing and Changing: The success of your work is not linear. Picasso's career is a perfect example—he created less refined work year after year, embracing abstraction more fully as he went. Creative growth doesn't look the same for everyone, and it's okay if your journey is different. We'll also talk about the powerful story from Threads about an old artist who never sold a single painting but continued to create because he valued leaving behind his soul in his work. Anchoring Yourself in Past Successes: Reflecting on past accomplishments can be a source of reassurance. When we look back at the work we're proud of, it reminds us that we're capable of creating great things today and in the future. I mentioned my friend Ekaterina Popova and you must check out her work and Create! Magazine  Looking to Guides for Inspiration: Has someone else walked this path before you? Seeking out mentors and guides who've navigated their own creative journeys can offer invaluable lessons. Sometimes, seeing that others have walked this road without falling off a cliff can give us the confidence to keep moving forward. RSVP for the upcoming Share The Work series starting March 10th!

And he said, In me, my Lord, send I pray by the hand Thou wilt send. And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Moses, and He said, Is there not Aaron, thy brother, the Levite? I know that speaking he will speak. And also behold he goeth forth to meet thee; and he will see thee, and he will be glad in his heart. And thou shalt speak unto him, and shalt put the words in his mouth; and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. And he shall speak for thee unto the people; and it shall be that he shall be to thee for a mouth, and thou shalt be to him for God. And thou shalt take in thy hand this rod, wherewith thou shalt do the signs. And Moses went, and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, Let me go, I pray, and return unto my brethren who are in Egypt, and I shall see whether they yet live. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace. And Jehovah said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt; because all the men seeking thy soul are dead. And Moses took his wife and his sons, and made them ride upon the ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt; and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. Exodus 4:13-20 Divine Truth is immediate and truth Divine is meditate Arcana Coelestia 6998...for by Moses is represented the Lord as to the Divine truth which proceeds immediately from the Lord; consequently by Aaron, the Divine truth which proceeds mediately from the Lord, and which is the doctrine of good and truth. That truth which Moses here represents is truth which cannot be heard or perceived by man (n. 6982); but the truth which Aaron represents is truth which can be both heard and perceived by man; hence Aaron is called the “mouth,” and Moses his “God;” and hence Aaron is called a “Levite,” for by a “Levite” is signified the doctrine of good and truth of the church, which ministers to and serves the priesthood. AC 7009...  It is said the truth of doctrine which also proceeds mediately from the Lord, because the truth of doctrine, which is represented by Aaron, is such as is heard and perceived by angels and men. This truth is what proceeds mediately from the Lord; but the truth which is represented by Moses, is that which proceeds from the Lord immediately, and is not heard or perceived by men, nor even by angels (n. 6982, 6985, 6996, 7004). 6996[3] That the Divine truth proceeding immediately from the Lord cannot be heard or perceived, is also evident from the correspondences and derivative representatives; namely, that the things a man speaks are presented quite differently with spirits; and the things spirits speak, quite differently with the angels. This can be seen from the spiritual sense of the Word and its literal sense, in that the literal sense, which is adapted to man, is significative and representative of the things which are in the spiritual sense; while this latter sense is not perceptible to man except insofar as it can be presented and expressed by such things as are of the world and of nature; and still less the angelic sense. What then must be the case with the Divine truth proceeding immediately from the Divine of the Lord, which is infinitely above the angelic understanding, and which is not perceptible in heaven except insofar as it passes through heaven, and so puts on a form adapted and suited to the perception of those who are there, which is effected by means of a wonderful influx, not at all comprehensible to anyone! These things have been said in order that it may be known that the Divine truth proceeding from the Lord cannot be heard or perceived by anyone, except through mediations. Fear of Jehovah's anger arises from the response of the proprium to truth AC 6997. And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Moses. That this signifies clemency, is evident from the signification of “the anger of Jehovah,” as not being anger, but the opposite of anger, thus mercy, and here clemency.

They explore the common mindset of believing we can get everything done and how this leads to a lack of intentionality in planning our time. Jones shares his belief that the problem isn't time management, but choice management, a concept that could revolutionize how you approach your day.But it's not all about work. Jones believes in being passionate about certain things in life, including family, spiritual beliefs, career, and relationships. He shares how this passion acts as a filter for everything he does, influencing every choice he makes.Three key topics to look out for:Struggling with Too Much to Do: Jones Loflin discusses the common issue of feeling overwhelmed with tasks and responsibilities. He suggests that this often stems from the mindset that everything can be accomplished within a given timeframe, leading to overloading and inefficiency. The Importance of Passion and Choice Management: Loflin emphasizes the role of passion in guiding our choices and how we spend our time. He argues that the problem is not time management, but choice management. He suggests that we should be more intentional in planning how we use our time, keeping in mind our passions and goals.Learning and Perspective from Travel: Loflin shares his experiences from traveling and how it has broadened his perspective. He emphasizes the importance of understanding different viewpoints and backgrounds, and how this can enrich our understanding of the world and influence our choices. This episode is a treasure trove of insights, stories, and data that add an extra layer of depth to the conversation. On today's episode we are talking about how not adopting the latest trends in workforce flexibility might be killing your company.  Jones Loflin, an educator turned internationally recognized speaker and author, is known for his impactful books like "Always Growing" and "Juggling Elephants," available in the US and 14+ countries. His work, including "Getting The Blue Ribbon" and "Getting to It," offers practical strategies for personal and professional growth. Founder of Jones U, he provides online courses and coaching for self-paced learning. Previously the "Trainer of Trainers" for "Who Moved My Cheese?" Jones holds degrees from North Carolina State University and is a member of the National Speaker's Association.  Episode Highlights: ·       Shift from Work-Life Balance to Work-Life Success: There has been a shift from the concept of work-life balance to work-life success. That balance implies a static state, whereas success entails being present in the moment and investing time where it is needed most. ·       Accountability and Communication: Accountability is crucial in ensuring that work gets done efficiently, especially in environments with flexible policies like unlimited leave. Regular check-ins and effective listening by leaders foster a supportive and productive work culture. ·       Adapting Leadership Styles: Leaders must adapt their management approach based on whether team members are working in-person or remotely. Effective leaders prioritize consistent communication, active listening, and understanding the needs of their team members. ·       Flexibility in Work Arrangements: The trend towards flexible work arrangements, including remote work options, continues to grow. Successful organizations prioritize autonomy for their teams while also establishing clear guidelines and expectations for productivity and collaboration. ·       Business Case for In-Office Time: Organizations should establish a clear business case for requiring employees to be in the office certain days of the week. By identifying specific times when in-person collaboration is necessary, companies can justify their policies and gain employee buy-in. ·       Data-Driven Approach to Change: When considering changes to work policies, such as remote work options or leave policies, it's essential to gather data through employee engagement surveys or assessments. Knee-jerk reactions can lead to unintended consequences, so it's crucial to make informed decisions based on feedback from employees. ·       Leadership Role in Addressing Burnout: By creating psychologically safe environments where employees feel comfortable discussing their challenges, leaders can help prevent burnout. Additionally, leading by example, demonstrating vulnerability, and acknowledging personal work preferences can foster understanding and support within the team.Jones' Top 3 Takeaways for the Audience:People go about getting work done differently. As much as possible, we need to respect that individual cadence instead of trying to put everyone into a box.Organizations must make the business case for whatever flexible work policies they are going to put in place. People should be consistently intentional about what they need from work so when they are done with work, we are doing the things we really want to be doing.  How to Connect with Jones:Website: https://jonesloflin.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonesloflin/

Keisha Downes, BSN, RN, CCDS, CCS, joined me recently to talk about her impressive career in healthcare, a path that started from humble beginnings at Wal-Mart, then to nursing, travel nursing, and finally CDI, which took her from her home state of Virginia to my home state of Massachusetts. Today Downes serves as CDI director over a 3-hospital system and a staff of 21. She constantly challenges herself to learn and do new things, and is constantly learning and growing as a result. We get a bit into her ACDIS session, CDI Mortality Reviews: Going Beyond SOI/ROM, as well as Tufts' metrics for success and mortality review process. And a little bit about a session I plan to deliver at ACDIS about my former colleague, the late Melissa Varnavas. We happen to share a similar love of 80s hard rock, which was an unexpected surprise. Downes' CDI oversight includes Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, the place where I was born—another surprise. Which often occurs when speaking with my guests. Come to think of it, I wonder if my mom's admission and my delivery was given a proper CDI review—probably not, this was 1973. Pre-DRGs, pre-EHR, almost pre-electricity.

Welcome Jones. Jones   Oh, pleasure to be here with you, Marlana. Thanks for the opportunity to talk about a subject near and dear to my heart, which is making the best choices with your time. Marlana   And honestly, sometimes a subject that I can be a hot mess with. So why do you think we struggle with time management? Jones   Well, first of all, let me say this, I don't have it all figured out. If I tell a lot of people that when I do have it all figured out, I'll be dead, and it won't matter. You know because it is such a difficult topic. I think one of the things that happens for many people is it's just this whole term time management. You know, we really don't manage time, as Charlie Gilkey says, you know, we manage schedules, we manage energy, we manage choices, time can only be accounted for. It's only in the rearview mirror can we look back and go, Oh, yeah, that was not a good choice, which led to taking too much time with this and those kinds of things? And answer to your question, the reason I think we struggle is because we have so many competing demands on our time and competing expectations, you know, what we expect of ourselves, what our boss expects of us, what our family expects of us. And so sometimes it's hard to cut through the clutter, and figure out what is the best choice for me to make in this moment, and then you add in, you know, poor energy levels, so we don't have the mental energy to make the best decisions or to hold on to those healthy boundaries, that I think it's just a cadre of reasons that bring us to the point of we as not making the best choices with your time. Marlana   You know, it's interesting because I believe that people don't seem to understand that everything comes at a cost. The cost does not necessarily have to be monetary, but if we say yes to something, then we're saying no to something else, because we only have a limited amount of time. So even if we say yes to something that we want to do or saying no to maybe another choice that we could have made or relaxing or anything, there's always a give and take here. That being the case, how do we make better choices? Jones   I think it starts with stopping. And I know that sounds strange, but I make the comment sometimes that I think we're so busy checking boxes, we haven't stopped to ask ourselves, are these the right boxes to check? And so, I think it starts with stopping and giving yourself some space to say, what is important to me and to even step back? What are my values? What do I value? What's my purpose? I mean, I think it really starts with getting to that deeper level, and saying, what is it I want from my life, from my work, from the choices that I'm...
