ENERGY IN ACTION - EPISODE 064 Lovevery - Purposeful Play Customized for all Abilities Maral Amani is a Licensed Physical Therapist and the Disability Support Specialist at Lovevery, a toy company that helps families, educators and therapists find the right toys and the right tools to help develop confidence through play. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you tell us about yourself and your work? I'm a Physical Therapist, specializing in children ages 0-3 and early intervention. At Lovevery, I'm the Disability Support Specialist for a recently launched program that allows families to purchase play kits without a subscription. Through communicating with me, I'm able to help families choose specific play kits that are best for children with a focus on skill-based development and strength-based development. Families can reach out to me through the website, answer questions about their children, share what skills they're developing, and I will recommend a play kit that will also include a play guide. What kits are available for children with mobility issues? As a Physical Therapist, I focus on big movements, core strengthening, leg strengthening, bearing weight through the arms. For tiny movements, it's best to put children in a comfortable position to play so they're reducing the energy demand of holding themselves up so their energy can focus on fine motor movement. If you purchase a play kit that has toys that can't be used right away or used in the typical way, think about how the toy can be enjoyed with modifications. What do you recommend for developing executive functioning skills? My favorite play kit for that is the Inspector Kit with the ball drop box. It comes with balls inside the box, but it rolls out at an angle to the side. There's auditory feedback from the wooden ball rolling and dropping. I also like using our Bright & Light Play Scarf to cover books and other objects children are interested in. This is good for working on object permanence and executive functioning. How do families access the Lovevery disability service? Complete the form or email me at support.specialist@lovevery.com and we can discuss which play kit is right for your child through a one-on-one, personalized experience. We have a disability expert council with a lot of experience working with children with disabilities and they provide a lot of guidance to me to ensure we're considering multiple angles of each child's development. We are here for all families and we want families to feel seen and supported. Please email me with any questions you have. Kari Roberts started her professional career as a Licensed Physical Therapist. In an effort to lean into more creative pursuits, and to bring in some additional money, she started a side business as a makeup artist.  As she grew her side business, she talked about it. She'd done a great job of putting systems in place to help her succeed and stay on top of her business while still working as a physical therapist.  Then Covid happened. While she wasn't a true “front line worker” she did have to keep going to work when so many others were able to stay home. As the fear mounted, she decided to lean into her business building abilities and started her OBM business.  Kari is now an OBM, makeup artist, physical therapist, AND digital shop owner. She's multi-passionate and it has helped her to grow and expand that much more quickly. The addition of her digital S.O.P. Shoppe has changed and expanded her business in ways she didn't initially expect. Listen in to hear why she opened it, how it's going, and ways her business has grown since her digital doors opened.  Highlights from This Episode: It's okay to be multi-passionate, but each passion needs its own designated place in your business.  Creating multiple entry points for your business helps meet your clients and customers right where they are.  Having a digital commerce store can and does open doors you wouldn't expect.  The strategy behind how your D-Commerce shop fits into your current offers is extremely important.  Don't over-complicate your tech stack. Captivating Quotes from this Episode: I was very open and honest about it [being a makeup artist] being a side hustle. People started asking me to help them with their side hustles so then I branched off into business consulting and business strategy. As an entrepreneur, that's when I really felt like I don't want to be labeled even as a side hustler. People would say, “Oh, you're just a hobbyist. It's not a real business.” Like, no, it's legit a real business. I get income, I pay taxes, I pay myself, I have someone that helps me. I've probably written hundreds of SOPs and workflows and whatnot, but I kinda have the same way of doing it. So I thought, what if instead of teaching someone how to write their own workflow or custom system, I gave them a template to show them how to write their own? And that was where the idea [for the S.O.P. Shoppe] came from. I spent a lot of time and effort to create each one of those things [SOP templates]. But I only did it once, and now that it's there, I can sell it on repeat, I can put things on sale. Also, I've been a part of different bundles, and I'm able to say I can contribute to your freebie or I can contribute to a gift and reduce one item or give something away or whatever. I like having that flexibility to be a part of more collaborative projects. Especially as a woman of color, you know, my grandmother wouldn't have had these opportunities, and that's not lost on me. She had very few options with what she could do to earn a living and that is definitely not lost. I mean, I think it's pretty cool that I started a whole business, because I thought it was a good idea. And now it's contributing to our household. And I have a team and I get to help them contribute towards their whole household and their personal goals. I think that is so cool.   Links: Are you ready to clear the noise? Each Memorial Day, our thoughts turn to all the men and women who have died serving our country in the military, both during peacetime and during war. It is a time when individually and as families and as a nation we reflect on the nature of war and the significance of military service, and to help in our reflection, we welcome Geronimo Whitaker and Peter Lucier to our program. Our guests are veterans of two very different wars fought in very different times, one as an Army foot soldier in Vietnam and the other as a Marine in Afghanistan, but each has known the violence, the loneliness, and the lasting effects of war, and in that sense, they also share a common bond. We offer our special appreciation to Garett Reppenhagen, Executive Director of Veterans for Peace, and Pat Alviso, Executive Director of Military Families Speak Out, for their assistance in arranging for our guests on this podcast. RELEVANT LINKS Washington Post series on "The Afghanistan Papers" Peter Lucier, a veteran and a Catholic, wrestles with the lies of war and his faith. Peter Lucier, writing on "Not Your Messiah" Peter Lucier reflects, "As a soldier I was loved for my sins. Now I must repent for them." Veterans for Peace Military Families Speak Out About Face - Veterans Against the War Note: The Afghanistan Papers: A Secret History of the War by Craig Whitlock is expected on Aug. 31, 2021.   GUEST INFO Geronimo Whitaker Geronimo was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1949 into a career military family. His father, James A. Whitaker, was in the US Army Air Force and served as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. Growing up on military bases all around the world gave Geronimo a perspective of equality among people. When he enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War, he was continuing a long tradition among his family members of service in the military. During his Army enlistment, he served as an Infantry Squad leader/Non-Commissioned officer in the 1st Cavalry Division, Airmobile, Republic of Vietnam, 1971.  Today, Geronimo describes himself as an artist, writer, and storyteller, especially of traditional African and Afro-American folk tales, as well as a drummer, guitarist, song writer and singer. He is familiar with theater as both an actor and a director, and has been a playwright, novelist and military journalist, as well as a martial artist, a Licensed Physical Therapist and an instructor in the Healing Arts. Geronimo is a Nationally Certified “B Level” AYSO Youth Soccer Coach, an entrepreneur and a world traveler.  Geronimo lives in Edmonds, Washington with his wife, surrounded by grandchildren and family. His three sons and newest grandbaby live in the Bay area of CA, and in Brooklyn NY.   Peter Lucier Born in St. Louis, raised in Dallas, Peter moved back to St. Louis in 2004. In 2008 he graduated from Saint Louis University High School, a Jesuit school in the city of St. Louis. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2008. From 2009-2011 he served in a Fleet Anti-Terrorism and Security Team (FAST) platoon, deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Spain, and Bahrain. From 2011-2013 he was a scout with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in Camp Pendleton, deploying to Afghanistan in 2011. He was honorably discharged from active duty as a corporal in 2013. Peter attended Montana State University where he graduated with an undergraduate degree in political science in 2018. His writing career began in 2015 when he joined a group of former junior enlisted writers who contributed to Tom Rick's Best Defense blog. His writing has since appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, America Magazine, US Catholic, and many more publications. He primarily writes about military and veteran issues, especially faith and military service.  His 2017 piece, “Not Your Messiah,” examines how veterans fulfill a dual messianic role in American civil religion – sacrificial lambs and high priests of civic holidays. His 2019 piece for America Magazine looked at the Catholic ritual of penance as a mechanism for healing the wounds of war. He has also written for the Washington Post on how to respond to the lies of war, as a Catholic, and in response to the Afghanistan Papers.  Lucier currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri where he continues to write, and is a law student at St. Louis University.   SUPPORT PFJ We greatly appreciate your financial support so that we can continue to educate, advocate and pray for the things that matter to our organization.  Please consider donating through PayPal. Get ready to heal, relax, and strengthen your body through restrictive stretching. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST  20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE Today on the podcast, we're learning about a training technique called DCT or Dynamic Contraction Technique, that addresses these questions and much more from our friend, Licensed Physical Therapist and Founder of The National Resistance Stretching Association, Nic Bartolotta. We're delving into new topics like flexibility vs. flex-ability, how to properly train our muscles using eccentric loading, and why Nic believes from working with thousands of clients and some of the top stars in the NBA that we all have what he calls a "second heart" in our lower extremities, and what stretching this second heart can do for our overall movement quality and wellness. If you've ever had an injury or circulation issue that sidelined you on your wellness journey, or if you've been looking for a way to build up the proper range of motion without compensating your joints, this is going to be an insightful and thought provoking episode. Be sure to listen until the end of the show where Nic discusses how to train flexibility using the ProFlex and RolFlex, and listen as he uncovers the most common mistakes that people make when training flexibility in new exercise programs. Nic Bartolotta will share with us how proper stretching, leg movements, and exercise can help power the "second heart" in our calf muscles, aka the soleus muscle. Listen to Episode 178 as Nic Uncovers: How his personal background became a huge part of developing his professional career in alternative medicine and resistance training. The challenge to find the right answers in order to fix Nic's knee. Common misconceptions about what stretching actually is and how to properly do it. What is DCT and what are the benefits? What is myofascia and how can a massage heal other parts of the body because it connects every tissue of the body. Which stretches can affect the myofascia or general muscles? The difference between the fascial tension and muscle tension. Why the calf and the lower leg is considered "the second heart" of the body. How to reach out to a professional to help you with restrictive stretching and DCT. What you can do on your own to improve your restrictive stretching and DCT ability. The wide use of DCT tools like the ProFlex even among professional basketball players. Flexibility vs Flex-Ability: what's the difference and how does Flex-Ability apply to everyone? What creates knots and muscle tension in our bodies? Common mistakes people make when beginning a new exercise. When is the best time to stretch? 3 Takeaways From The Show Physical movement throughout the day is important to ensure that we're pumping blood from our calves (the soleus muscle) back to our heart. Every time you run, jog, or just walk, you're working your second heart. If we can learn how to treat our injuries on our own with different tools on a daily basis, this can be more efficient than going to see a physical therapist several times a week. Not that we don't need to see a specialist if we do have an injury, but it's so beneficial to our overall health when we have the ability to know what our bodies want and need. Passive stretching is not as beneficial for our bodies as we might have once believed. What's better for our bodies is active stretching and always feeling at least a bit of tension in our muscles when we stretch. Power Quotes From Nic Bartolotta "When I initially started to work with clients, they would come in with all of these beliefs about muscle tension and stretching. Through this dialogue process, I would show and prove to them what stretching is supposed to feel like and what's possible in the body. After explaining all of that to them, they could never go back again to their original thoughts about stretching." - Nic Bartolotta on helping his clients to better understand the process of stretching through DCT.  "Most people believe that stretching is supposed to be painful and that the sharp pain you feel when you relax into a stretch is what you're supposed to accomplish. However, when you resist with a muscle during the stretch and you don't relax, the muscle actually protects you from that pain. That pain is your guideline for how far you should go during the stretch." - Nic Bartolotta on common misconceptions about stretching.  "With this understanding of how tension can affect blood circulation, you can turn your attention towards what it takes to mitigate problems and injuries." - Nic Bartolotta from his article,  Stretching Your Second Heart "The calf or the lower leg is full of capillary beds and vascular veins so when you walk, jog, or run, the soleus muscle in your calf is pumping blood out of your legs and into your heart." - Nic Bartolotta on why the calf muscle, the soleus, is like our second heart.  "If a person has edema, all they have to do is pump their ankles a bit to get the blood in the soleus muscle circulating again. However, if the soleus is so restricted with fascial or muscle tension, it won't be able to pump blood to the heart and that's when we want to use restrictive stretching and exercise." - Nic Bartolotta on what can happen if the soleus muscle is restricted and how restrictive stretching and exercise can help.  "With the word, "flexibility," people think of someone who can lengthen their muscles or be able to do the splits. However, if we break up the word and change it into "flex-ability," flex means to flex or to shorten a muscle. The ability to be able to flex a muscle is actually far more important than the ability to lengthen a muscle." - Nic Bartolotta on the difference between Flexibility and Flex-Ability.  "We can avoid traumatic injuries by looking at which joints need to flex and shorten versus which muscles need to lengthen and we get far more results when we do that." - Nic Bartolotta on the importance of joint flexing vs. muscle lengthening.  "Going to physical therapy two or three times a week is good, but to learn how to do certain things on your own and to be able to do them a couple of times a day, is how you're really going to change your body." - Nic Bartolotta on the power of taking change into your own hands to heal your body. "Passive stretching is absolutely something that should never be down before or after stretching. You should never completely relax a muscle into a stretch. You should always hold at least a little bit of tension in the muscle because that's going to tell you whether or not you're beyond your range of motion. If you can't contract a muscle, you shouldn't be in that position in the first place. " - Nic Bartolotta on how we should be stretching and how to do know if we're doing it right.  "If I can go out there and change one person's perspective on health, than I can affirm with myself that I'm doing the right thing." - Nic Bartolotta's personal mantra.  About Nic Bartolotta Nic Bartolotta is the founder of the national resistance stretching association, and is a licensed physical therapist and holistic health practitioner specially trained as a flexibility and myofascial release expert. He is the co-founder of Range of Motion Products, maker of the Rolflex, and the creator of Dynamic Contraction Technique (DCT). Have you ever found yourself taking inspired action towards a new workout program or training regimen, only to wind up succumbing to an injury that keeps you from progressing? Have you ever been curious as to why some people get injured far more than others? Exercise scientists and anatomists have been writing for centuries about the power of exercise as medicine, not only for cardiovascular heath, optimal strength, and blood circulation, but essentially for a better quality of life, supported through a body that can withstand the demands of our modern, sedentary, and even sometimes even over-trained population. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST In the USA, where desk posture and upper cross syndrome are affecting millions of men and women every year, what are the fundamentals we can all do at any age or athletic ability to progress our training, flexibility, and fortify our muscles to prevent injury? Injury Prevention Through DCT   Today on the podcast, we're learning about a training technique called DCT or Dynamic Contraction Technique, that addresses these questions and much more from our friend, Licensed Physical Therapist and Founder of The National Resistance Stretching Association, Nic Bartolotta. Be sure to listen until the end of the show where Nic discusses how to train flexibility using the ProFlex and RolFlex, and listen as he uncovers the most common mistakes that people make when training flexibility in new exercise programs. He'll also finally answer the question that so many fitness pros have debated for years: When exactly is the best time to stretch? And his answers may surprise you. Stretching Your Second Heart Can stretching mean more to our health than just something we do to warm up, cool down, or relax the body? When was the last time you took time out of your day to focus on your body and stretch? Whether you constantly work out, have an active job, or work all day at a desk, stretching has this incredible power to heal our bodies. At the age of 19, Nic Bartolotta was simply told by doctors that after years of gymnastics and diving, there was no more cartilage in his left knee and therefore no solution to his injury. However, Nic didn't believe that was possible and turned to both alternative medicine and resistance training to help him fix his knee. With passion and continuous persistence, Nic is changing the way we see stretching and physical therapy. On today's episode of Wellness Force Radio,  Nic will share with us how proper stretching, leg movements, and exercise can help power the "second heart" in our calf muscles aka the soleus muscle. Get ready to heal, relax, and strengthen your body through restrictive stretching.  Listen to Episode 113 as Nic Uncovers: How his personal background became a huge part of developing his professional career in alternative medicine and resistance training.
