The pandemic and lock downs of 2020/21 stopped the outdoor event from happening, but that didn't stop, Tom...

I am extremely excited to introduce my guest Remy Park.I first met Remy a few years ago. I was throwing a Franklin & Whitman’s Yoga For The Pups charity event and my friend Caitlyn Shoemaker, @frommybowl on Instagram, was coming to Philly to be a part of it. She asked me if her friend Remy could come down from New York to be a guest. From the moment I picked Remy up at the train station I knew we would be friends. We got along immediately and have been close ever since. Over the last few years she has been a part of several of our charity events, both in Philly and NYC, and we’ve attended different events together as well from The GOOD Fest to Expo West. In this episode we start out talking about how Remy went from working a full-time job to making the leap to make her website and social platforms her new career. Most of the conversation, however, focuses on her battle with both her eating disorder and addiction issues. She shares the stories of how they both started, the toll they took on her teen years, and how she found a new balance in life and made focusing on her health, both mental and physical, a priority. Remy is one of my most favorite people in the world. She’s so creative, smart, and she always makes me laugh…and I couldn’t be happier that she agreed to be a guest. I couldn’t thank her enough for being so genuine and transparent, especially when talking about her mental health and addiction issues. I hope you enjoy our conversation!Connect With Remy:Remy's Blog: https://veggiekinsblog.com/Remy's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/veggiekins/Remy's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@veggiekins?lang=en

This week’s episode is a good one, and a timely one. We’ve spoken about it on previous podcasts, but we both attended The GoodFest in Philadelphia this past fall, and had a truly transformative experience. We are so excited to share that this week we have Kate Van Horn on the podcast, who is one of the founder’s of The GOOD Fest, among many other things. Kate is a Yoga Instructor, Blogger, and wellness entrepreneur currently living in LA. You wouldn’t guess it from talking with her, but Kate has been through some tough times in her life and we were honored to be able to talk about these things with her. In this episode we talk about… - Trauma and healing, - How trauma can affect you as a person in relationships, - Different forms of therapy she did to work through it, - The work she did to start the GoodFest and, - Taking a leap of faith and moving to a new city. We are so proud and excited about this episode and are so excited to hear what you think - let’s start normalizing these conversations together. I’ve known Jess Lively for years, we both grew up in Michigan, and our paths overlapped there a few years ago. When we were both living there in 2016 we went to go see an Elizabeth Gilbert lecture about her book Big Magic and after over tacos we chatted for hours. Since then Jess has traveled all over the world in her own very Eat Pray Love-esque adventure and her life as changed so much. On that day we were both in an interesting places and I somehow shared with her off hand about Abraham Hicks over lunch, Jess ended up immersing herself in their work and implementing their concepts, along with many other teachers around the concept of law of attraction, manifestation, neuroscience, consciousness, and much more. She has a unique skill to distill heady esoteric content into practical terms. Most recently she's taken all of her work and created C-School, a live school in Australia where she now lives but is launching online this week. In this episode we talked about Death, loneliness, fear of not having enough time, body image and food, the law of attraction, time scarcity and time abundance, plus so much more. It was a different conversation than anything I was expecting and I loved every second. I met Mastin Kipp in 2014 at his book signing in Detroit. He told me then to stop consuming his work and the work of other self-help personalities and start focusing on my own creative work. Since then, I've done just that. I've spent less time developing myself and more time being myself as I am, or at least trying to. It was great to reconnect with Mastin and talk about the new direction of his work which is now mainly is focused on helping people go deeper into their emotional trauma and figuring out their purpose when they feel lost. We also talked in this episode about my compulsion of using spirituality and personal growth as "spiritual entertainment" without actually implementing it, we get into comparison, and the thin line between self care and self indulgence, plus he gives some of the best relationship advice I’ve ever received. Danielle embarks on her first menage a trois live in her hometown of Philadelphia with the girls from The GOOD Fest; Kate Van Horn, Jess Baumgardner, and Jen Clark, where they discuss building a community, what true wellness is really all about, and even the must-have essentials for when you're stranded on a deserted island... Together, the babes discuss how to go for what you want while not getting caught up in the opinion of others, why in-person support is just as important as digital, and finding balance while navigating the path of being the best version of yourself. Plus Danielle reveals her mind altering experience with CBD oil... The episode is relatable and a breath of fresh air for any rookie entrepreneur or individual looking for more meaningful connections in their life. I was unsure what to expect when I met Laura, I was connected to her by pervious podcast guest Camilla Ruth Marcus. I knew she was lovely via email, Camilla spoke highly of her, and that she had a thriving career in the NYC hospitality industry but that was about it. Days before our interview she sent me a keynote she'd given a few months prior. I read the 12 pages on a long train train and found myself fully weeping by the time I arrived at my stop. When I spoke to her in her cozy West Village apartment a few days later it was clear immediately she'd worked in hospitality her entire career. She is a host through and through, I felt so cozy in her space chatting with her about our fascinating story for hours. I loved learning about the hospitality industry, how she navigated a having rare cancer in the prime of her career, her experience with the medical industry, and how she used her cancer as a learning opportunity to discovering food as medicine, shifting her perspective on death, intuition, and listening to her body. We cover tips for those dealing with a cancer diagnosis, in the hospitality industry or wanting to be as well as for being a patron, networking, and seeing things from a new lens. I've been following Dr. Lipman for years--I've listened to countless interviews with him and read most articles he's written. In the days where I was overly addicted to wellness I'd scour the internet for the latests health information for hours falling down wormholes on what foods to avoid and super-foods to splurge on. Ironically, when I met Dr. Lipman in his office for this interview we didn't focus our time talking about what foods to avoid but rather we talked about how the healthiest thing we can do for ourselves doesn't have to do with food at all. With over 30 years experience as a medical doctor, he's discovered that when people have meaning in their lives they're often healthier. In this conversation, we talked about his fascinating life of moving from South Africa to the Bronx in the 80s to becoming a a prolific celebrity doctor and author. We also talked about how wellness movement impacts different generations differently and where he sees the future of wellness. It's been a very long while (8 months) since I've caught up with you solo on the podcast. I thought this week I'd fill you in on some updates like how the podcast will be on a 3 week break, what you can expect next season and beyond from me, and what I've been loving lately. In this episode I not only share what I've been listening to, reading, watching, eating, and products I've been using--but I also got to reflect on what has been working in my life (long road-trips with my boyfriend) and what really has not been (making decisions). It was nice recording this because it gave me the opportunity to thinking through to what I've been loving and grateful for this season, hopefully you also enjoy listening to it and it inspires you in some way. There are few people I love following on social media as much today's guest. Dana Cowin's enthusiasm for food, career, and life as a whole are a delight. As editor in chief of Food & Wine Magazine for 21 years, a judge on Top Chef, a cookbook author, the host of the podcast Speaking Broadly, a chief creative officer at Dig Inn, just to name a few--on paper she's clearly extremely accomplished. In person however, she far exceeded her impressive resume she was present, welcoming, inspirational, wise, and warm when I visited her Manhattan apartment to record. Dana made us tea, gushed about her best friend Cheryl, and made sure I had a cozy pillow to sit on before diving into the interview. She was not only easy to talk to but allowed the conversation to organically meander wherever I led us. We chatted about female friendship, the evolution of food culture and her role in that, food culture and trends now, what a day in the life of a editor in chief is actually like, career transitions (Dana was EIC for 21 years before leaving in 2017), the power of story and her new love of podcasting, food as pleasure and connection, her advice to mentors and mentees, and so much more. I loved everything about Dana and it was a delight to have her on the podcast. I started listening to Trevor Hall back in 2009 when my yoga studio played him in a heavy rotation. His music soon made its way onto my own playlists when I started teaching yoga myself. After speaking with him this week on the podcast I learned that his career in the music industry had a tumultuous start which including getting dropped from his label, living in a monastery, and eventually making a hit album. Beyond his music he's one of the most wise, peaceful, and dynamic people I've met. We talked about music as a tool, meditation, surrender, learning vs. applying practices, saturn returns, using astrology for self-awareness, traveling, staying grounded, relationships as mirrors, culture, connection, indecisiveness, and more. I loved meeting Trevor as much as I loved listening to Lime Tree in yoga class in 2009 (which was a lot). My guest today to sex what a nutritionist is to food. Just like a nutritionist can help you eat more naturally, Shan Boodran, a sexologist can help you hump more naturally! Shan is the Internet’s most sought-after sex educator - she has over 25 million YouTube views and she’s shared sex and relationship advice on ABC’s “The View,” MTV, The Steve Harvey Show, CNN, The New York Times, Forbes and Time Magazine. Her book, LAID (love it) was a Canadian Bestseller, she rocks a really cool LIVE Facebook show and she sells vibrator necklaces -- which yes, to answer your silent question, are for BOTH decoration AND functional use. I met Shan when I introduced her at The Good Fest and I saw women just get wet and wild listening to her talk about having a healthy sex life so I knew I had to bring her on my show. Full disclosure, I’m admittedly a pretty prude lady so I definitely had a couple squeamish moments throughout our chat, but as Shan says: “fear ruins everything” so I just went with it. She also says she has orgasms in her sleep sometimes so if that’s something you’re struggling with - not sleep orgasms, awake orgasms, there’s a lot of helpful tips to come. PUN! Ok, press play. Get turned on to hear: - How Shan shifted from journalism to sexology. - What a healthy sex life like looks like! - How to navigate a relationship when your sex drive differs from your partners. - Is scheduling sex good or bad? - The diff between love languages and sex languages! - Ways to talk to your partner about sex and make it not weird... - The parallels between food and sex :-D - Yep, we talk about having orgasms ! ! ! - The connection between our mindset and our sexual experience. (this was huge!) - Some habits that might be blocking your firey sex life. - And LOTS more. Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! My guest today is straight up - my girl crush. Whatevs. I’ve got no shame. And there’s no reason she won’t be your girl crush, too, after hearing our chat and stalking her on the socials! Jess Sepel, known as JS Health online, is quickly becoming one of Australia’s most sought-after wellness and lifestyle advocates - because she’s so passionate about helping women achieve an actually balanced lifestyle and body by eating whole foods and by flicking off fad diets forever. Jess is not shy about sharing her personal story about how she went from a diet fanatic to a whole foods fan, (not the store, the actual whole...foods), and she uses her booming platform, her books, her clinical nutritionist education and her online course to help women build a truly healthy relationship with food. For real. It’s a thing. And in this chat I got the pleasure of asking Jess live, from across the world, exactly how that thing called a healthy relationship with food can be a thing for everyone! We had a very similar conversation when I interviewed her live at The Good Fest a couple months ago so I tried to forget what we spoke about then and be a curious george when picking her brain again! This is most-def one of the most tangible episodes to date so just a little FYI - a thorough recap of our chat lives over at at partyinmyplants.com/84. Press play to hear: - How Jess turned in to a walking, glowing billboard of health! - Some gentle nutrition guidance. - Ways to learn to to listen to your bod. - Why a green smoothie won't do any good if you're constantly stressed! - How to create a stress-free zone and set some social media boundaries. (FOR REALZ.) - An almost unheard of recommendation about exercise! - What to do when you wanna take a nap at 3 p.m…. - What to NEVER do when you come home from work! - The connection between your mindset and your weight. - And loads more :-) Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! Clean Eating for Women with Carrie Forrest, MPH in Nutrition
Kate Van Horn the Co-Creator of the GoodFest wellness festival is here to talk about the festival, her recovery story, body love, and all good things. In this episode of the Clean Eating for Women podcast, we talk about: What GoodFest is all about Letting go of labels and still living authentically Tools like yoga helped Kate heal from her eating disorder Some highlights of this episode on body love & all the good things: GoodFest started in Philadelphia and the first festival ended up with 350 women from all over. Then they decided to try a festival in L.A. Then they are going back to Philadelphia, but they are also planning to go to Austin and Seattle. [01:35] The spirit of loving yourself and finding like minded women at GoodFest. They want it to be an inclusive community. Wellness should be fun and exploratory, not rigid. People should go to GoodFest with an open mind, and take what works and leave the rest. [03:10] Kate's personal journey of figuring out where she belonged and letting go of labels. She thinks it is important to feel you identify with others. She started out as plant based vegan, but struggled with it. Being able to make choices and be in alignment with our food choices. Letting go of labels can be a feeling of relief. [06:28] Not being rigid left more room for being creative. This actually snowballed into the Good Festival. Flowing led to more opportunities and made things more fluid. Just allowing things to be along with having trust leaves room for flow. [10:00] Kate loves yoga and thinks it was the final piece of the puzzle that helped her eating disorder. Mindfulness and moving intuitively really helped her healing process. Her yoga practice started as a home practice where she was at peace with her body. [12:04] Having an accountability buddy or working with a specialist when working on recovering from an eating disorder. Everyone benefits from talking through things, but it is also empowering to have tools like yoga. There is a lot within us that we can do when we are ready. [16:25] Finding balance in finding speakers for GoodFest. They chose a panel for the L.A. GoodFest because people have had different food experiences. They want to represent different voices. They also chose the food freedom route. They framed it as a relationship with food and discovering what food is best for each person. [18:56] One of the purposes of GoodFest is for women to have a place where they aren't judged. Kate wants it to become the norm when people in the wellness community get together. [24:06] The next GoodFest on 8/11/18 will feature Kelsey Patel and Ruby Warrington, a panel, yoga, and Alexis Joseph. It will end with a meditation. They are going to have large groups instead of tracks. It's going to be a main stage format. Use coupon code “SUPSLEEP” for 10% off! Reasons you should check out Somnifix: Mouth breathing is highly inefficient. Besides leading to dry mouth, sore throat, and nasal congestion, it can cause snores, lowered blood oxygen saturation, and worsened immunity. These have serious consequences for health, fitness, and sleep. The simple solution to all of these issues is breathing through the nose. It’s easy to be cognizant of breathing during the day, but mouth breathing during sleep is widespread because we are paralyzed for certain parts of our sleep. This paralysis, called atonia, particularly affects the muscles around the mouth and neck. A great way to ensure proper breathing is by using SomniFix Mouth Strips. They are fully hypoallergenic–we’ve done extensive biocompatibility testing to ensure that users won’t experience allergic reactions or irritated skin. Our adhesive was specially-engineered for the lips. That means no pain or difficulty removing it, and no sticky residue left behind. It also releases just with the force of opening the mouth (another safety feature). We included the mesh-covered breathing vent to ensure limited mouth breathing is possible if necessary. We conducted clinical trials with our device in partnership with researchers from Harvard Medical School, and we saw that our strips are effective in reducing ‘mouth’ snores and in improving breathing efficiency. All contents of our box (box, pouches, strips, branded liner) are recyclable. Remember, the nose is for breathing and the mouth is for eating Use “SUPSLEEP” for 10% off and tag us with your mouth tape on Instagram! 17:00 - ARTISANA GIVEAWAY!!! This episode starts and ends with me catching up [gushing] with you about how I've been feeling lately and sharing some things I've been too nervous to share on the podcast before. I talk about saying yes to too much, buckets of life, my general feeling of overwhelm as well as sharing what I've been loving and grateful for in the last month. This week I interviewed the smart, genuine, and fascinating entrepreneur Karen Behnke founder of my favorite make-up brand Juice Beauty. I'm obsessed with their products so I'm real happy I loved Karen their founder just as much. She honestly was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people I've ever interviewed for this podcast. In this episode we talk about how we're both from Michigan, wellness in the 80’s, being vegetarian, being an entrepreneur, why green apples are great for your skin and how much we both love eating them with cinnamon on them, using food for beauty, finding your passions and turning that into a profession, motherhood, body-image, the sexism she's experienced in her career, what working with Gwyneth Paltrow is like and so much more. This is a very robust episode, hope you like it all! I was introduced to the Handel Group over 3 years ago by Mastin Kipp who coached in their life coaching method. Ever since I've followed closely them work and even interviewed their former president Laurie Gerber in 2013 the year this podcast began. Since then became aware of their founder and today's guest Lauren Handel Zander as the tough, 'says it like it is', 'no non-sense' life-coach to successful people such as Dr. Mark Hyman and Elena Brower. She recently launched her first book Maybe It's You and when her publicist reached out for her to come on the podcast, I said absolutely and immediately set a date. We met a few weeks ago in person to record this between her packed day of client sessions and meetings. While Lauren is indeed tough which you'll hear in this episode, she is also deeply caring, empathetic, and full of wisdom. As she says, she deeply loves human beings and believes everyone is capable of living their dream if they simply release some blocks and negative patterns preventing them from coming true. That's where her and her life-coaching comes in. We spoke about her story of how she came to this work as well as got into how-to apply it using me as a guinea pig. We spoke on facing your darkness, calling out all your lies, what a lie lists is and why it's helpful in personal growth, time management and developing a relationship with time, and getting clear on your dreams. I stumbled across Minka Brooklyn soon after moving to New York. It was one of those very Brooklyn places I was very thrilled existed and couldn't wait to check out now that I lived in the city. Aki, the founder was kind, nurturing, and sweet right off the bat. She gave me a tour of the space and a full treatment of Reiki and flower essences, both of witch I had never experienced. I knew immediately I wanted to now more about Aki, her story and the genesis of her holistic healing wonderland, Minka. We recorded this conversation a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon in her cozy office. We talked for hours on everything from holistic healing to her fascinating story of immigrating from Japan at 18, moving to New York, dealing with depression, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. We get into so many topics including dabbling in lots of different things, healing tools for depression, wellness, connecting to your true purpose, tarot readings, activism, self-care, masculine/feminine energies, flower essences, reiki, and so much more. Her advice on relationships is some of the best I've heard and there are so many wise moments throughout this. I know you'll love her throughout this long meandering conversation. Kate was my first podcast guest back in February and I brought her back today to talk about community in the wellness world (and so much more.) I love this conversation because Kate shares so many well articulated insights. We talk about the wellness trends we're just not that into and why that's totally fine. The overall theme was definitely that wellness practices are meant to be a tool, not a strict regime. The GOODfest will be in LA this coming February and I'm so excited to attend. The weird thing about the internet is that you can discover people and without meeting them in person know quite a lot their tastes, interests, and life. If you follow them long enough you start to feel like you eventually even feel like you're friends. Of course you're not fully friends because they know nothing about you. Today's conversation is one of the rare (yet becoming more frequent for me) occasions where an internet friend becomes a real friend live on the podcast (over Skype in this case). I've been getting to know Christine for years through being entertained by her Vlogs, discovering new music & brands through her favorites videos, style tips from her daily uniform series, and feeling inspired from her apartment tours & intimate interviews on YouTube. I'm so glad this conversation lived up to my expectation of what Christine would be like live. She was ever bit as thoughtful, earnest, and wise as she comes off in the hundreds of YouTube videos. While Christine went to film school and began on YouTube when she was just 18 she's an eclectic creative who has interests ranging from home decor to film photography to make-up to design. We get into everything from a cultivating a career as a creative freelancer to recovering after a tough breakup to handling aging and body image and creating community. We talk about style and religion and family and travel and everything in between. I loved meeting her and having this meandering conversation which I think you'll love too. Full show notes:: here The coolest thing about the internet is how it allows you to connect with people all over the world you otherwise may never known. While I only met Tero Isokauppila for the first time this summer when we recorded this conversation in person while he was here in New York, we've been friends on the internet since early 2013. Tero's from Finland and founded the popular superfood mushroom brand Four Sigmatic over five years ago. While I've loved Four Sigmatic's products ever since I was one of the first bloggers in America to try them, my knowledge on the fungi kingdom, foraging, and the benefits of utilizing mushrooms was limited until this conversation. Wellness wise, we got identifying adaptogens, how to use powerful herbs, ‘mushroom hacks’, and why not all water is created equal. He answered everything I was curious about in the fascinating fungi kingdom. Beyond mushrooms we had a meandering conversation where we discussed everything from entrepreneurship, inclusivity in the wellness industry, the importance of family, cultural and education system differences in other countries, his life growing up in Finland and moving to the States, his thoughts on living in New York City, and his journaling, reflection/gratitude practice. Tero is a great guy and I loved finally meeting him in person and getting to record this episode. His new book Healing Mushrooms which you'll hear a bit about in this episode is out now and it's as great as he is. My favorite part of being in New York are all the interesting, creative, talented people I serendipitously meet. Some of them, like today's guest Dr. Emily I know immediately after meeting them that I've made a life friend. Not only are we both from Michigan, Emily and I connected right off the bat over a million similar interests, mutual friends, and ideas for collaborations. Her expertise of the human body and her feminine approach to chiropractic are unmatched. She's a chiropractor and founder of Midtown Manhattan's Urban Wellness Clinic, where sure curates a team of expert healers from a personal trainer (shout out Trainer Matt who is the best!), to an acupuncturist, to a masseuse. It was her dream to built this clinic in New York and we get into the goal setting and visioning of how she made that dream reality. We discuss ways fitness can be harmful to the body, reprogramming bad body patterns, the body working holistically, the importance of breathing and belly breathing, “tech neck”, bio hacks for everything from walking, sitting, and looking at our devices. She's not only highly skilled, she's warm, empathetic, and articulate. The story of how she met her husband is an auditory romantic comedy. You'll love her, I sure do. Enjoy this episode and follow closely everything Dr. Emily & her clinic do. full show notes here! Today's guest Nicole is so impressive to me. Not only is she a single mom of two, author, and founder and CEO of a start up, Splendid Spoon she is beautiful, present, articulate, and so engaging whenever I speak with her. We met a few months ago when we were speaking at Wanderlust and her peaceful energy made me immediately want to know more about her and be her friend. She has this calm energy even though she's doing so much somehow making it seem easy. We connected in so many ways, from our philosophy with food and body image, to our love for journaling, to practicing mindfulness and so much more. I loved the way this conversation meandered in so many directions as usual. We covered being a single mom, navigating a divorce, entrepreneurship, single tasking, feeling our feelings, living from your heart vs. head, food as medicine, career transitions, mindful eating, motherhood (and how 'you birth your own healer'), New York City, style tips (I love her style) and way more. Today’s guest is really a spokesperson for our insides. A publicist for what our unique bodies really want to thrive. A walking billboard for the magic that is meditation. Cassandra Bodzak, the author of Eat With Intention, a health coach, and a global meditation teacher is just bursting with passion for helping peeps create their “next level” lives utilizing the ‘FOOD, MEDITATION AND SELF CARE trifecta’...or triangle, as you’ll soon hear about. I’d seen Cassandra on the interwebs for a long time but it wasn’t until I met her at The Good Fest where she led an epic meditation (during which I snuck on stage when everyone’s eyes were closed to snag some killer pics for her!), that I got to witness first hand just how happy, confident and truly grounded she is. This is all to say that this chica thoroughly practices what she preaches, so listen to all she preaches in this jam-packed chat and then start practicing and I can guarantee you’ll feel more happy, confident and grounded, too! Get amped to hear: What actually IS eating with intention? And how it can help you. Our embarrassing first AIM screen names. Proof that Cassandra’s philosophy: “eff it, just do it, don’t wait for it to be perfect” works! An easy way to love your body more...in the shower. How to get started with meditation (and how it’s like food!). What your food cravings really mean. And tons more! A few months ago when I spoke at The Good Fest in Philly I met a slew of fascinating people, including today's guest Chris Cieri the founder of Franklin and Whitman. However, we can barely call it meeting since we hardly spoke because the weekend was so packed. We kept in touch though and next thing I knew Chris and I became a great friends. He is creative, ambitious, genuine, and the kind of guy who would (as he says in the episode) help you with your oxygen mask before securing his own much to the chagrin of every flight attendant. Chris is the founder of the instagram famous Philadelphia based all-natural skincare line Franklin & Whitman a company that not only is cruelty free but also donates 5% of their sales to animal shelters. He's an impressive guy--juggling his young business, a high level tech job, and being a father and husband. We get into how he makes it all work and how his motto 'perfectly imperfect' helps. This conversation is so rich--we covered our addiction to our phones and occupying ourselves, vulnerability and connection, family, ambition, and of course the inception of Frank & Whit beginning with a beard oil. I had a blast recording this episode. Chris and his wonderful wife Lisa came to NYC for the weekend and we not only recorded this 2 hour long conversation but talked even more over dinner and brunch in the city. This episode feels so cozy to me. Listening to it brought back all the joy I felt when we recorded a couple weeks ago in Ruby's beautiful Brooklyn apartment. Sitting across from her surrounded by lush plants, shinny crystals, and cool photography-- I never wanted to end the episode and after two hours of flowing conversation it was truly hard to leave. Ruby is one of those people you meet and immediately want to be around and listen to. Not only does she have a soothing voice (complete with a British accent) with it she tells stories of her life in London as a fashion and lifestyle journalist, spews fascinating spiritual and astrology facts, antidotes of falling in love and moving to New York City, starting her online magazine The Numinous, and musing being a Material Girl in a Mystical World. I'm proud of this conversation and how it effortlessly meandered into such interesting areas. We of course talked about her journalism career where she interviewed everyone from Lady Gaga to Claire Danes but also things I've never heard her discuss before like her eating disorder recovery and how she met and fell in love with her husband. We talk about how she found a career that she loves and fills her up as well as how she got into astrology and what the process of writing her book was like and what sharing it with her family was like. We get into the mystical vs. the scientific and where she is now with spiritual activism at the core of all her work which means taking all this mystical knowledge and using it for good in the world. I adore Ruby, her message, book, and this conversation. Hope you like it too and let me know. A few years ago I was a mess around food and my body. My entire life revolved around what I was eating next. If I wasn't preoccupied with my next meal, I was thinking about what I'd eaten earlier and what that meant for what or how much I'd allow myself to eat later. On the rare occasion I wasn't thinking about food, googling gluten-free-dairy-free recipes, or checking out another vegan restaurant's menu I was thinking about my body and how I was terrified of it changing in a way I wasn't comfortable with. I'm embarrassed to admit all of this but that was my internal reality until I found the work of today's repeat guest Isabel Foxen Duke. Isabel showed me there's another way to live. She taught me why I and so many people fall into an obsession with thinness and therefore dieting and consequently food, all as a result of thinness as a standard of beauty in our culture and the pervasive diet culture that has created. She taught me about fat phobia and how I had internalized it. She taught me about intuitive eating and deconstructing my diet mentality to listen to my body's hunger and fullness signals. She taught me about emotional eating and how it's not wrong, rather it is merely a coping mechanism and a response to years of deprivation with food. She taught me to diversity my hobbies away from wellness alone and to instead focus my attention on my career, creativity, and relationships. Most of all, she helped my to finally stop fighting food and work on making my life as a whole really beautiful, not just my body. We talk about all this and more in today's very long, robust episode. As I mentioned in the inro, I took Isabel's flagship program in 2014 and it honestly really helped me. I stumbled across today's guest Sam Zabell's podcast Adulthood Made Easy while doing research before my interview with Ashley Ford. Sam had Ashley on her podcast a few months before I did and as I listened to that episode I knew I wanted the articulate and curious host Sam to also be a guest on my podcast. Sam moved to New York City to pursue a career in magazine writing after studying journalism at Northwestern. She found herself not only writing for Real Simple Magazine, she also hosted their podcast Adulthood Made Easy. This conversation was recorded in her Manhattan apartment. We talk about podcasting, life in your 20's, relationships, body image, side hustles and hobbies, living in New York and so much more. If you enjoy this episode let us know over in the Facebook Group. Also a quick reminder about the upcoming LIVE PODCAST recording I'll be having at The End in Brooklyn. Come be a part of the conversation. Being able to record these episodes live has been such an incredible shift for me. -Sam's Instagram | Twitter | Her Website for Crafts for Change-Her past podcast which I love, Adulthood Made Easy (some of her favorite pod guests are Abbi Jacobson, Mara Wilson, Ashley Ford... although they are all really good)-We also mention The Turnaround podcast-Her calligraphy Instagram / Website-Sam's article about her body image struggle (and her experience with trichotillomania) on Real Simple-this episode with Arden Rose also talks about trichotillomania-we talk about Megan Gebhart's "52 cups of coffee"-She uses Mint to stay on top of her finances-new restaurant in NYC she just discovered:: Hometown Bar-B-Que-Movie:: The Parent Trap-TV:: Veep-Book:: Homegoing-Music:: Powerful Broadway Women Playlist on Spotify Cool Things to Check-Out:-I'll be doing a podcast listener meet-up and LIVE recording at The End in Brooklyn on August 24th-The Good Fest will be in L.A. on Feb. 3rd, 2018 !! Today I have Taran and Bunny Ghatrora, sisters and co-founders of Ellebox as well as a podcast listener Q&A in the intro of this episode making it a very packed nearly 2 hours. I know it's been a while since I've done a Q&A episode, so I thought I'd add some in to this episode. I'm not an expect on anything but I did very earnestly answer all the questions I received. This episode feels like a big sleepover where I get to chat with you guys through your questions in the beginning then my interview with the co-founders of Ellebox feels like girl talk too. I love Ellebox and believe in what they are doing but after this interview with the CEO sisters my love for Elle box hit new heights. You'll get to hear some about Ellebox and how it came to be but also we discuss growing up, periods, family, feminism, moon cycles and more! Hope you love this episode and if you haven't already tried Ellebox they are offering a FREE BOX to all listeners who want to try it out, so there's nothing to lose. -Ellebox's Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube-Get a FREE ELLEBOX-For a fun look at balancing religious background/upbringing with modern day life:: You Made It Weird Podcast (Pete Holmes) & Crashing (Pete's new show) & this Master of None episode.-Come visit me at The End in Brooklyn for a LIVE podcast recording!-Listen in to Sasha Jones’ episode where she interviews me to find out how I met Nick (my boyfriend)-Want to know some of my top episodes I love and learn about more of my favorite things? This episode makes me so happy. From the experience of the recording to the interview itself, I'm so proud of this conversation and excited for you to hear it. I talk with the amazingly wise psychiatrist and founder of Positive Prescriptions Dr. Samantha Boardman. We spoke for over almost two hours on an array of tools the uses to help her patients and wisdom she accrued over her years as a practicing therapist in New York City. Dr. Sam radiates a kindness and has an energy that is so pure and inspiring. In re-listening to her episode I was inspired all over again. Her website, Positive Prescription is dedicated to sharing inspiration around tweaks and changes people can make that are life-enhancing and resilience-building. We discuss many of these little changes and additions people can add to their lives to enhance the good and joy in the everyday. Everything she offers is all science-backed, research-driven, actionable, productive and digestible. I hope you get something valuable out of this episode, I know I've already applied much of what she shared into my own life. And let us know what was your biggest take-away over in the Facebook Listener Group! and sign up for her weekly dose which I also love. -Dr. Samantha's Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter-Angela Duckworth's talk about Grit -Books:: Theft by Findings by David Seders, Flourish by Martin Seligman, Influence by Robert Cialdini, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, You Must Change Your Life by Rachel Corbett-Moon Juice products-Other favorites:: Rudy (movie) & U2 (music) Cool Things to Check-Out:-I'll be doing a podcast listener meet-up and LIVE recording at The End in Brooklyn on August 24th-The Good Fest will be in L.A. on Feb. 3rd, 2018 !! I love Danielle LaPorte and her work. I've been following her closely for over 5 years, reading every book and listening to her on every podcast. She's been a mentor from afar and on my list of future pod guests (and a popular request from so many listeners!) since day one.. Danielle embodies so much of what I admire in a women. She values creativity above all else, has learned from experience how to combine fierce persistence with ease, finds gratitude in even the craziest situations, and mothers in a way I admire. She is constantly growing and learning, which she talks about on today's episode as well as in her new book, White Hot Truth, which I loved. It's a refreshing self-help book that's unlike any other self-help content. It's a playbook for owning our individual joy and spirituality without all the dogma and rules the modern personal growth world often promotes. This is one of those books that you want in hardcopy; to read, reread, underline, and notate. I took so many notes from this book about life, creativity, gratitude, finding flow and more. We cover all of these topics plus some of my others I was eager to ask Danielle about like feminism, body image, motherhood, full-time jobs and entrepreneurship, and of course the usual quick fire questions. Let me know your favorite parts in the facebook group and be sure to find me on social media so we can be friends there too. -Danielle's Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube-Danielle's books:: White Hot Truth (just released!), The Desire Map, Fire Starter Sessions-The interview Danielle LaPorte did with Johnathan Fields that we mention-Shambalah meditation center-Books (other than hers) that we mention: Course of Miracles & The Radiance Sutras-Movies Danielle loves: About Time, Wings of Desire & Far Away So Close, The Thomas Crown Affair, Moonlight, Captin Fantastic, Far From The Madding CrowdCool Things to Check-Out:-I'll be at Wanderlust THIS WEEKEND in Vermont -- come hang with us!-Gabby Bernstien's Spirit Junkie Master Class -The Good Fest will be in L.A. on Feb. 3rd, 2017 !! I discovered Ashley C Ford a few years ago on Lena Dunham's podcast Women of the Hour. After listening to her very soothing voice for the hour and connecting with what she spoke, I started following her on Twitter (highly recommend) and reading every essay she's ever written. She's one of the most honest and talented writers I've ever read and I admire her deeply....which you'll hear me gush about throughout this episode. If you have gotten any of my recent emails or if your in the podcast facebook group it's likely you have seen me sharing Ashley Ford's writings. Specifically this last essay she did which I've shared a bunch. Ashley is a brilliant, and incredibly authentic--the type of person I could spend all day talking with. She has been one of my mentors from afar and I'm super excited to continue to learn from her and hopefully take classes from her eventually. In today's conversation we explore topics like "feeling enough", relationships, contentment, of course writing, moving to New York from the Midwest, body image, and the importance of communication. Instead of me interviewing the guest, I've brought back one of the podcast's first guests and a good friend, Sacha Jones of Stiggly's Holistics NYC, to interview me. I'm calling it a special birthday episode as well as a sort of podcast birthday / anniversary. It's been over four years since I started this and so much has changed over those years with me, the podcast, the blog, and the direction I want things to go. For long time pod listeners, thank you for all your support as I've changed and so has the show. And for new listeners, thank you too for giving the podcast a chance and feel free to check out some of those early (and very different) episodes from the younger days of the podcast (and the host). Sacha dives into so many topics many of them inspired from the listener questions in the Facebook Group. You'll hear us discuss where I'm at now with body image, wellness, feminism, feeling feelings, my upcoming move to NYC, where I want my work & podcast to go, my new relationship (!!), plus some fun quick-fire questions.... links to everything we mention are below as always. — Show Sponsors —care/ofI'm really loving Care/Of supplements.
