Episode 30: The Role of Emotions in Business Decisions with Jessica Hottle What role should emotions have in your business? Should you rely on your emotions or push them away? It's important to pay attention to your emotions to see what needs to be addressed, not to make the decision for you. It's your response to your feelings that can lead you to bad places. Mindset is 99% of life. Honor your feelings without minimizing them. If you're suffering, it's ok to visit that place but don't take up residence there. Feelings can overwhelm you and try to control you, or if put in the proper place, use them as a warning system that there is a problem you need to address. We have thought for a long time that most human emotions fall within the general categories of happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and disgust. In 2017 a study from UC Berkeley challenges this long-held assumption and found 27 distinct categories for emotions. Triggers and stimulus in our world lead us to experience a rollercoaster of emotions every. single. day. Emotions lead to our feelings. These feelings can show up in so many ways…So, what do we do with all of these feelings? Today I tackle what to do with all your feelings with Jessica Hottle, podcast host and best-selling author of Face Off with Your Feelings: Break Up with the Lies From Your Past and Embrace the Truth for Your Future. Today on the Christian podcast I am chatting with Jessica Hottle. Jessica is a coach, personal trainer, entrepreneur and writer. We talked about how to create space and heal tender places within our souls. It is a great conversation with lots of eye-opening and practical steps that anyone can use. How do we create space in our life? If we are constantly busy and our minds are not at rest, we can't work on the issues that are plaguing us. Clarity comes through being obedient and listening to the Holy Spirit's soft and gentle voice. Ask yourself: How am I using my downtime? Am I being a good steward of my time? Be aware of what you are doing, set a timer and then after the timer goes off, pivot or keep going. This will help you stay on track! How do we “take captive” our thoughts? Acknowledge what you are feeling. Identify and name what you are experiencing Acceptance (it isn't your identity, it is just what you are feeling) What is this emotion telling you? Why am I holding offense to this? Have a conversation with God. Get your mind back to the truth. Feelings are gauges and indicators of what is going on deep inside, but the truth is what should guide us. We need to have the truth and God's word on repeat inside of our hearts and minds. How we react matters. Give yourself a few seconds between the emotion and the reaction to ask yourself. Does this reaction help or hinder the situation? If it is going to hinder the situation or hurt feelings, it is best to hold back. Ask yourself: “Am I helping or hindering the situation?” and then react in the way that is honoring to God and His truth. How to get “unstuck” in my thought life? Welcome vulnerability and walk in humility. Spend time in God's word and let His truth be hidden in your heart. Earlier in this season of Still With You I had the opportunity to speak with faith-based fitness coach, podcast host, speaker, and #1 best-selling author, Jessica Hottle. This conversation is shared on Episode 88: Dismantling Lies Keeping You From Healing with Jessica Hottle. Since recording together Jessica has published new book, "Face Off With Your Feelings: Break Up with the Lies of the Past and Embrace the Truth for your Future". Over the summer Jessica so generously shared any early copy for me to read and friends, this book is life changing!Jessica has the gift of sharing how Biblical truth and health science intersect. Romans 12:2 talks about being transformed by the renewing of your mind. But what does that actually look like? How can my brain practice this on a Tuesday? Does what I feel matter to God? Should my emotions be set aside?"Face Off With Your Feelings" is less like a text and more like a personal invitation to ask these tough questions. Jessica teaches, we no longer have to run and hide from our feelings. Our feelings can lead us into a deeper relationship with God. She believes and has the truth to back it up that God wants you well in all areas of your life. How free would you feel if your feelings didn't get the final say in your life, but God's Word did?Open the notes app on your iPhone or have a pen and Post-It Notes pad near. Hand to heart you will want to remember every word you hear from Jess as she shares simple, tangible actions steps for us to take as we work through the process of healing.Official show notes available atwww.kohliebrowning.comMusic, "We'll Be Alright" by Gabrielle Gracewww.gabriellegracemusic.net

I used to believe that God gave us illness to “teach us a lesson.” I've come a long way from that way of thinking. It's very hard to have a meaningful relationship with someone you believe would want to do you harm. That's not God. He's the pain taker not the pain maker. This is one of the many topics we cover in my interview with this week's podcast guest, Jessica Hottle, about her book Face Off With Your Feelings. We talk about changing the way you think about God to change the way you live with God. Pre-order my new book Face Off with Your Feelings at jessicahottle.com  Many of us allow our feelings to be the engine in our lives instead of the caboose. We are run by our feelings when we run away from them. But as Jessica Hottle teaches, we no longer have to run and hide from our feelings. Our feelings can lead us into a deeper relationship with God. Whether you feel too busy to slow down; believe you are not worth the time, the effort, or the fight; feel so overwhelmed with where to start; or have no idea how to take your thoughts captive, question your thoughts, or renew your mind, this book helps you create space, step-by-step, to heal the tender places of your soul. This book teaches you how worthy you are of love and healing because of our good Father in heaven. Writing from her own journey, Jessica shares simple, tangible actions steps for readers to take as they work through the process of healing, including: Changing the way you think about God to change the way you live with God, Creating the space you need to find healing, Discovering how to get the Word of God from your head into your heart, Experiencing the love of God through relationship and not works, and Finding freedom from shame about what you feel so you can heal. It's easy to get so caught up in our to-do lists that we don't stop to ask if what we're busy doing is something we should be doing. Is it really worth our time and energy or are there more important things we should be focusing on? In this conversation with the co-leaders of She Works His Way, Michelle Myers and Somer Phobus, we're talking about the battle of overwork, why margin is vital for us to build deep relationships, and the power and freedom that comes with seeking God first.  Resources mentioned:  SWHW Narrow Conference – November 5-6, 2021 Follow She Works His Way: website | Instagram | Facebook Follow Jessica: website | Instagram | freebies

If we've been connected for any amount of time, then you likely know how passionate I am about emotional health. As a “thinker” and a former “avoider,” I have learned the value of feelings and emotion. Being married to someone that is a full-on “feeler,” I have also watched him learn to embrace his emotions without letting his feelings call the shots in his life. My husband Mark and I are always helping others find the balance between feeling and faith, and that is why I am so excited about today's conversation! My guest today is Jessica Hottle, who is passionate about helping us discover that when our soul is well, we can be well! Jessica is an author of a new book, Face Off with Your Feelings: Break Up with the Lies From Your Past and Embrace the Truth for Your Future, and is a faith-based fitness coach, podcast host, and has a heart for teaching others how to dismantle lies that are preventing them from healing and wholeness. In this conversation, Jessica shares the five steps for processing through our emotions, our tendency to put a “faith band-aid” over how we feel, what it means for our feelings to point us to Jesus, common mistakes when it comes to navigating emotions, and a whole lot more. Here's the thing, Sis… We are actually run by our emotions when we are running away from them.  The world tells us to ignore, or just “get over” our past hurts. The world says “haters gonna hate. Use it as fuel.” But the way the world says to handle our hurts and anger is contrary to how the Bible says to handle and HEAL from those things.  Jessica Hottle, a faith-based fitness coach, is joining me in today's episode and sharing about how we can partner with God to see our healing all the way through, because healing? Stephanie welcomes Jessica Hottle today. Her story is a classic Cinderella sage, from ashes to beauty. She grew up in a very toxic home environment, but found Christ and freedom as a young adult. This didn't mean that all her problems were solved... far from it! She learned to take every thought captive to Christ--how do you forgive those who hurt you deeply? How do you identify lies you've believed your whole life, and how do you then replace them with truth, practically? How do you reframe your entire identity on the foundation of Christ, and His words of you? How do you root yourself so deeply in God's view of you, that you can truly say that there is no condemnation for you, because you are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1)? Stephanie Pletka's superpower is encouraging other women. She desires to support the busy, overwhelmed mom who feels held hostage by other people's expectations of her. In this final interview of Season Seven, I hope you'll laugh at Stephanie's honest storytelling, be encouraged by her grace-filled presence, throw off all the ridiculous expectations and give yourself permission to be the woman God created you to be. As we bring Season Seven to a close, may this final interview and Stephanie's story serve a reminder that you don't need anyone's permission other than God to pursue your dream. You don't have to “get certified” or “graduate first.” You don't need a degree or diploma. All you need is a heart devoted to the Lord and a willingness to be obedient to what He's called you to, even when it flies in the face of everything the world is telling you. Stephanie's stories were a reminder to me that I don't have to be perfect or even get it right all the time. I just have to be faithful to Him and His calling, trusting that He will walk with me through the fire and the failures and He is the source of my identity, not my performance (good or bad). As you join us in this conversation, I hope you'll pay attention to the following: The importance of giving yourself breathing room. Why we need to partner with each other rather than comparing ourselves to others. How prone we are to believe we're not enough. And her tips on how to “own the morning” so you can “own the day.” You'll find the show notes and all the ways to connect with Stephanie Pletka here: http://www.merrittonsa.com/podcast/155   NEXT STEPS: If you're new to the Devoted Dreamers Podcast or just trying to figure out what's next after you've heard this one, check out my 30 Days of Prayer series or one of these recent episodes: Episode 152 – What Happens When You Let God Define Your Worth with Courtney Reimer – released 5/13/2020 Episode 153 – If Lies Are Keeping You from Pursuing Your Dream with Jessica Hottle – released on 5/20/20 SUPPORT THE PODCAST: Listener support makes this show possible! Jessica Hottle's passion is to see women set free from the lies of this world. She's written several books on the topic of worth and hosts a podcast called What's the Truth? tackling the lies we believe and how you can shift back to truth. In this interview we dig into the fear of being mediocre or irrelevant, knowing what season your dream is in and not running ahead of that, how to figure out if you're striving for the wrong things, and Jessica's best system for writing a book. Jessica not only helps us figure out how to tackle the lies we are dealing with but she's also really honest about the ones that have put up roadblocks on her journey. Wondering if anyone would be inspired by her work. Worrying that she'd show up mediocre. Trying on things that weren't for her or weren't the right timing. She's real, she's been through it, and she paves the way for us with her honesty about how she wrestled to find the truth about her own dream. As I talk with Jessica, I hope you'll pay attention to the following: That the lies you're wrestling with are an attack on your identity. The benefits of staying in your lane, focusing on one thing and not worrying about what “she” is doing. How to listen for what God is revealing to you about your dream. That the Father sees you!
