The big story over the Christmas break was the announcement from the Vatican about "blessing same sex couples." Some traditionalists have hailed this as pastorally helpful and clarifying, while others call it confusing and potentially troubling. Meanwhile the mainstream news reported the Roman Catholic Church as moving toward gay affirming. I've asked my friend, Anthony Costello, back on the show to help us sort through the confusion and share his perspective as a thoughtful former Catholic about why Protestants ought to care about these developments. Prolific author and biblical scholar Michael F. Bird joins the podcast to discuss women in ministry, the Terminator movies, Bart Ehrman, and 90's-era John Barclay. This is the conversation theology nerds would dream of having, and Andrew and James (who are theology nerds, we must admit) were incredibly blessed to have such a conversation, one that was both humorous and earnest, with this esteemed scholar and theologian. (We even have somewhat of a bloopers reel toward the end.) Dr. Bird is the Academic Dean of Ridley College in Melbourne and holds a PhD in New Testament from University of Queensland. He writes and speaks of a variety of topics (it was difficult to select which ones we wanted to bring to him for this episode). With some Anglican bishops publicly changing their stance on same-sex marriage, the Church faces fresh calls to realign itself with contemporary society on LGBT+ issues. Some point to the urgent need for same-sex blessings because of the experiences of gay people who feel hurt by the Church. How should our "experience" shape our reading of Scripture? How do we keep it from essentially replacing Scriptural authority? What are the wider implications here on societal pressures for the Church to conform to the culture? Andy and Aaron explore all these questions and more in this packed episode. In this episode, Blake and Erin give listeners a preview of why this complementarian-turned-mutualist pastor is a wonderful resource for how Scripture and Christ see and empower women. In this episode, U-Wen and Robyn discuss the role of Ananias in bringing Saul into the Christian community (Acts 9:1-20), Peter's restoration to discipleship and mission (John 21:1-19), and the entire creation's worship of the Lamb and enthroned one in Revelation (Rev 5:11-14). All exemplify the kinds of faithful responses to the resurrection available to Christians both then and now, as well as the early church's emphasis on forgiveness and working with the Spirit. We mention Ian Paul's Psephizo blog post on John 21 and the words for love.
Some senior church leaders - including former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, and Baptist minister Steve Chalke - this week wrote a letter to the government urging it to ban 'conversion therapy' for 'trans people'. In the letter, they make the claim that "to be trans is to enter a sacred journey of becoming whole." But is this true? Or does this message contradict foundational Christian teachings? During this session of Round the Table, communications manager Paul Huxley is joined by three writers on the topic - Christian Concern's Dr Carys Moseley, Rev. Dr Ian Paul and Rev. Matthew Roberts - to analyse what the meaning behind this statement might really be. Rev. Dr Ian Paul, author and writer at psephizo.com, is also a theologian and member of General Synod, Managing Editor at Grove Books, and Adjunct Professor at Fuller Theological Seminary. No doubt, you’ve heard someone say that babies lose weight after birth but need to surpass their birth weight by 7 days, or 2 weeks, or 3 weeks. Similarly, you’ve probably heard that babies who have a 10% weight loss in the first few days require formula supplementation. But is this “decaphobia” justified? Join Marie and her guest, clinical pediatrician and expert researcher Dr. Ian Paul, who says that these numbers and assumptions have been based on anecdote, not evidence. Dr. Paul has given us the NEWT, i.e., the nomogram which represents the new and evidence-based standard to understand newborn weight loss. Whether you are a parent or a provider, you’ll learn the who-what-where-when-why of the NEWT, the research from 160,000 babies that propelled its inception, how it compares with expert recommendations, how weight loss in babies born by vaginal compares to cesarean birth, and how 36-weekers compare to 37-weekers. Don’t miss this exciting episode!

Ian Paul joins the conversation to discuss suffering, hope, glory, and discipleship in 1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11. We ask what it means to share in Christ’s suffering (specifically) and how we sustain hope in the midst of suffering. We also touch on the ascension in Acts 1:6-14. Ian Paul blogs about the Bible, theology, and preaching at Psephiz0. You can find a full list of his publications here. We mention this commentary by Ben Witherington and this NYT article by David Brooks.
Robert J. Nash shares seven phrases at the cross that express the depth of Christ's love. Then author and theologian Ian Paul. describes remarkable details of each account of the crucifixion and how they bear witness to the reality of Jesus' death and the truth of His resurrection.
We love our traditional Christmas scenes of tiny stables, grouchy inn-keepers, and three wise men. But how do they stack up with scripture? Let's take a look at the historical and cultural context of the Christmas story with author and theologian Ian Paul.

Did you realize you're an interpreter of the Bible? Every believer interprets--discerns/explains the meaning of-- God's word, and we can learn to do it well. Dr. Ian Paul guides us through the basics of interpreting scripture, and four essential questions to help us rightly apply what we read.
For a better understanding of the structure and outline of Revelation, we would recommend watching the Bible Project videos on Revelation (https://youtu.be/5nvVVcYD-0w & https://youtu.be/QpnIrbq2bKo)An accessible commentary for most readers is Vern Poythress’ The Returning King. Also of use is Michael Gorman’s Reading Revelation Responsibly. The entry on Revelation in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized is helpful, as is the commentary in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series by Ian Paul.If you are particularly interested in digging further into the symbolism and Old Testament imagery of Revelation, G. K. Beale’s Revelation: A Shorter Commentary is a great place to start. More adventurous readers could explore his longer work, or Peter Leithart’s recent volumes in the International Critical Commentary series.
Dr. Alex McFarland demonstrates how people are not remembered for long in this world, but that's why we need to focus on Jesus, with whom we will experience eternal life. Then author and theologian Ian Paul invites you to ask this question: Does your faith have a crumple zone?

Recently BBC assistant producer Damon Rosehas created a dust up around Christians asking to heal the disabled. Damon is blind himself and knows a bit about the subject having attended a school for the blind as a youth. To explore Christian disability doctrine and his own views as an atheist, he has written articles and produced a documentary. His work prompted Justin Brierley to invite him to Unbelievable? for a conversation with two disabled Christians -- Zoe Heming and Ian Paul. In this episode Andrew and David, disabled themselves, go over the problems with disability doctrine and healing. What does it mean when a Christian offers to heal you and it fails? Does the disabled community want to be bothered? Have Christians failed in their obligation to think critically about disability doctrine? Is disability doctrine god's silver bullet? We invite you to press play, follow along, and decide for yourself. Damon Rose produced a BBC radio documentary and article about his experience of being a blind non-believer who is sometimes approached by Christians to pray for his healing. The article ‘Stop Trying To Heal Me’ has produced a lively conversation about disability theology. He joins Justin along with Rev Zoe Heming who is an occasional wheel chair user and Rev Dr Ian Paul who wrote a critical response to the article.
