How can we thoughtfully approach ministry at the intersection of worship, anxiety, and emotions? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by the Reverend Dr. J. Michael Jordan. Michael is an ordained Wesleyan pastor who serves in pastoral ministry and is also a professor of Bible and Theology at Houghton College. His most recent book is entitled Worship in an Age of Anxiety. Together, Michael and Jason explore the importance of considering how the ways we preach, teach, worship, and gather relate to anxiety. Michael also shares how rethinking our theology of emotions can possibly impact the way we serve, ensuring that we're honoring God and not simply manipulating emotions.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more, at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:J. Michael Jordan on the ability to maintain behavior and decisions aligned with personal values regardless of emotional state: "I can live in ways that are congruent with my values, even when I'm having an anxious feeling."J. Michael Jordan on the significance of the personal and potentially transformative impact of faith on one's inner life and well-being: "We recognize, somehow, our faith has something to do with how we feel."J. Michael Jordan on the crucial role of a supportive relationship in fostering personal growth and empowerment: "If I didn't have this context of a loving, safe relationship, I wouldn't take that step to grow."----------------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? FrontStage BackStage is much more than another church leadership show, it is a complete resource to help you and your ministry leaders grow. Every week we go the extra mile and create a free toolkit so you and your ministry team can dive deeper into the topic that is discussed.Visit http://PastorServe.org/network to find the Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide. They discuss how he came to write this book and how these four women came to know each other and discuss ethics. They talk about how facts and values are different and the towering presence of Aristotle's philosophy. They describe the environment of Oxford in the 1920s and how much misogyny and sexism played a part in academia during this period. They discuss the life and philosophy of Iris Murdoch, Anscombe's philosophy and the impact of Wittgenstein, the philosophy of Philippa Foot, and contributions of Mary Midgley to philosophy and other fields of study. They also mention whether these women saw themselves as feminists and their legacy within philosophy.  Benjamin Lipscomb is a professor of philosophy and Director of the Honors Program at Houghton College where he specializes in ethical theory and history of philosophy. Today we welcome Dr. Erin Elliott for her second appearance here on the pod and her colleague Dr. Tarun Agarwal!   Dr. Erin Elliott grew up South of Boise (i.e. Southern California) but went away to a small NAIA school in Western New York in 1995 where she played collegiate soccer and graduated summa cum laude from Houghton College. After graduating Creighton Dental School in 2003, she settled in North Idaho to begin her general dentistry career at Post Falls Family Dental. She has a special interest in DentalSleep Medicine. She has lectured extensively on this topic and loves to spread the message that sleep apnea, snoring and insomnia can be screened for in your dental office AND can be treated. She is an active member of her local American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the past president and a diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.   Dr. Tarun Agarwal, DDS is considered one of the top dentists in the country. He is a recognized speaker, author, and dental leader. He has been featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and News 14 Carolina. Dr. Agarwal has been awarded '40 under 40' Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal.  He is regularly invited to teach other dentists around the world and recently built a training center within the practice dedicated to sharing his expertise.   Most importantly he is a loving husband and dedicated father of three wonderful children. His biggest accolade was being voted 'Best Dad in the World' by 2 of his 3 kids.   Today's episode is generously sponsored by our peeps at Phillips and their new Zoom delivered whitening kit! The demand for teeth whitening went down during the pandemic but with the world transitioning back into real life with parties and get-togethers for the upcoming holiday season, Irene has had an influx of patients at her practice asking for teeth whitening services. Finding that her inventory was low, she turned to the folks at Phillips and their Zoom delivered whitening service. All you need is to take a digital scan or impression and send it to the proprietary lab with a prescription like you would fill out for a mouth/sports guard or night guard. Phillips Zoom will then ship the whitening kit directly to your patient. Irene then created an instructional video that she could email to patients on how to use the product! Not only does this save the patient time, but it also saves the practice time and resources by not having to have the patient return to the office for the whitening treatment! It also gets the patient onboard and makes them a part of their own treatment plan. See the link below for more information on Phillips Zoom Delivered!   https://www.philips.ca/c-e/pe/teeth-whitening/philips-zoom-delivered.html   ------------------------------------------------------   Dr. Elliott and Dr. Agarwal share with Irene and Katrina how they met 5 years ago following a guest appearance Dr. Elliott made on another podcast that led to a small orthodontic scandal and how they have been working together ever since! They discuss the biggest challenge holding dentists back in their practice with sleep as well as how modern hygienists can bridge the gap between a patient's expectations of what a basic teeth cleaning appointment is and how to encourage them to take their treatment into their own hands.   Dr. Agarwal goes on to talk about why he has implemented digital impressions in his practice, the exciting outcomes of this implementation, how many scanners he currently has in his practice, as well as the culture of his practice and how important it is to him to invest in his staff and make sure they are fully participating in the culture that he has built.   They both share how they approach conversations around orthodontics with patients, and Dr. Elliott explains what Vivos is and how she feels about it. Lastly, they provide insight on the importance of the relationship between the dentist and the hygienist and tips on how a hygienist can get their dentist onboard with wok they are interested in infusing into their practice.   Reach out to Dr. Erin Elliott at:   @erinelliottdds on Instagram and Facebook   Reach out of Dr. Tarun Agarwal at:   @tbonespeaks on all social platforms except twitter or at his podcast: Tbone Speaks Podcast     ------------------------------------------------------   As always, our hosts encourage you to leave them a rating and review!   Find more episodes at https://www.toothordare.ca/        Follow us on Instagram! Today my guest is Dr. Bud Bence. It's hard for me to put into words just how much this man has meant to my life. In certain circles -- this is a man who needs no introduction. Certainly there's a timeframe where if you were a student where I went to school -- Indiana Wesleyan University -- just the name Bud BEnce elicits all kinds of emotion. There was nothing so stirring as a Bud Bence lecture. I mean it could really get your heart pounding. Undergrad in Philosophy at Houghton College. M. Div in Church History at Asbury Theological Seminary. Ph.D in historical theology at Emory University. I remember him teaching classes like Church History and learning about Martin Luther. I took a course called The Theology of holiness with Bud. But what I and most of his students remember most about him weren't his lectures -- and, I'm telling you -- his lectures were memorable. It was Bud's heart that endeared students to him. And that's been evidenced in Bud's retirement years as he's sat with countless students like me to talk about life -- to be that counselor and that friend. This conversation is similar to one Bud and I have had multiple times over the years -- and one I know he's had with many of my classmates. Things that struck me: 1. The need to be vulnerable. To have a few people in your life you are vulnerable with and put yourself out there with. The layers of friends, and how important that inner-circle is. 2. The transition from success being defined by "power" to success being defined by "influence." 3. The importance of failure and providence in finding your purpose. 4. Earning the respect of your kids. I was struck by this quote where he talked about not getting what he wanted, and a transition time in his life: "How can I focus on on what I'm good at, not some image of what I think people would say, 'Wow!' about?... That's an important strategic moment in life.... What are the gifts I have that I ought to be honing rather than what's the dream that I'm chasing."
