Christian mysticism is widely spread through this relatively common but fairly new tradition derived almost exclusively from what might have been parody pamphlets that told the story of Christian Rosenkreuz. Johann Valentine Andrea claims to have written one such pamphlet to make fun of the growing interest in mystical and magical traditions shortly after the beginning of protestant era in Germany.Attempts at understanding the divine are plentiful and diverse, but there's a reasonable sort of logic to the idea that scientific pursuits can reveal the nature of the universe and its creator. Rosicrucianism has branched into scores of organizations, and is even found in some branches of Freemasonry. AMORC (Ancient and Mystical Order Rosae Crucis) and the Rosicrucian Fellowship are both fairly popular, and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn brought us such great works as the Waite-Smith-Rider Tarot deck of 1909.All this and more... While on a trip to the Holy Land in 1967, an affluent executive claimed to have been attacked and subjugated by a raging God-like force. This life altering experience would send this semi-possessed man spiraling into a dark void of secret missions, animate UFOs, magical powers and a confrontation with some of the most revered names in Western Religion. Guest Bios Show Transcript https://youtu.be/T6tDPn5nQ7kThe Church is supposed to be the Bride of Christ and the hope for mankind. But has the church in America become nothing more than a business? On this edition of The Roys Report, Julie speaks with Nathan Apffel, a filmmaker who's working on a docuseries, called The Religion Business. Nathan, who has more than 15 years of experience in TV and film production, is confronting megachurches and their pastors with their lack of financial accountability. He's demanding to know their salaries and housing allowances—and he's not taking no for an answer. Last month, he got arrested when he showed up at Ed Young's megachurch in Grapevine, Texas, carrying signs asking what Ed's salary and housing allowance is. Prior to that, Nathan had a run-in with the security team of televangelist Kenneth Copeland on Copeland's expansive ministry complex, including a mansion and jet runway. Why do megachurches have security teams that protect them from honest questions? Why do so few congregations know what their pastors make? And why do filmmakers get arrested when they demand transparency? Buckle up, because this is a wild interview with someone who's a bit of a cowboy when it comes to his tactics. But his exposés reveal some alarming practices within the church—and he says he's on a mission to change them. On Thursday January 19th,2023 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss the 2016 book "The Ba'al Theory of Christianity" by author Glenn Young. This book is subtitled: "Exploring the Impact of Human Sacrifice on Western Religion." This subtitle and Young's insistence on equating Carthaginian child sacrifices with Palestinian Phoenician ritual practices is our only real complaint about this otherwise well-researched and strongly presented book. The author touches all the bases in explaining the differences between Yahwehism and the original worship of El and the Elohim. He describes Ezra's rewrite of the Bible and even mentions Joseph and Moses as the possible leaders of the Hyksos. Although he is wrong in assuming that Sidon and Tyre practiced child sacrifice in Classical times he may be correct in assuming that Carthaginian practices might have influenced the Druids and the Nordics and later the witchcraft persecutions. It is unfortunate that he fails to consider that even though the Carthaginians were originally Phoenician they, like the ancient Egyptians, were also African. This will be a very thought provoking and controversial subject.
The post Isn't Christianity Simply a Western Religion? appeared first on University Reformed Church.
Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) argues that the Greek word pistis often translated as “faith” is better understood as “allegiance.” Therefore, we are justified by allegiance to Christ alone, not simply by an intellectual assent to the facts about Jesus. This, of course, raises deep theological questions about the role of human action in justification and salvation and whether the Reformers understood things correctly when they talked about justification by faith alone. Matthew is a Professor of Theology at Quincy University. His main teaching area is the Bible and early Christian literature. He also teaches courses in Western Religion, Church History, and Christian Spirituality. Dr. Bates is an award-winning author. His popular and influential books include Gospel Allegiance (Brazos, 2019), Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic, 2017), and The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015). Current book projects on salvation and christology are underway. Dr. Bates also co-hosts OnScript, a Bible and theology podcast. He enjoys family life, hiking, baseball, and good conversation. More info on Dr. Bates, his publications, and his availability for speaking can be found at MatthewWBates.com.

When it comes to religious conversations, you often hear it said, "well don't all religions worship the same god?" Well, on this episode of Everyday Theology, we're tackling that question by looking at the two largest religions in the world-Christianity & Islam. Is the God of the Bible the same as Allah from the Islamic faith? And what are some of the differences between these two religions? All that and more on this episode! We hope you'll check it out. We often think of the late nineteenth century in Western societies as an era of immense technological and scientific change, moving from religion to secularism, from faith to logic. But today's guest, Dominic Green, author of The Religious Revolution: The Birth of Modern Spirituality, 1848-1898 (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; April 19, 2022) religion in the past was much stronger, and much weirder, than we give it credit. Tsame period that introduced Darwin's theory of evolution, democratic revolutions, mass urbanization, and the Industrial Revolutions, also brought with it new kinds of religiosity. It wasn't an absence of religion, but instead new forms of spirituality that filled the vacuum left behind by the diminished prominence of the Church in European and American politics and life. While fueled by rapid scientific and technological innovation, these formative decades were also a time of great social strife. The same period that welcomed the invention of the telephone and the motor vehicle, the de jure abolishment of slavery and serfdom, the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, and countless seminal artistic and literary movements, was also plagued by the aggressive rise of capitalism and colonialism, subjecting entire populations to the West's bottomless appetite for money and power. In effect, another transformation was underway: the religious revolution.Green chronicles this spiritual upheaval, taking us on a journey through the lives and ideas of a colorful cast of thinkers. He traces the influence of new Sanskrit translations of Hindu and Buddhist texts on the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He follows the rise of occultism from upstate New York to Bombay to Italy. He examines the ways in which religion and nationalism entwined for Wagner and Nietzsche. We get warts-and-all portraits of the many figures who profoundly influenced the religious shifts of this era, including big names like Marx, Darwin, Baudelaire, and Thoreau, as well as some lesser-known figures such as Éliphas Levi and--my personal favorite of the bunch--Helena Blavatsky. In response to the challenges brought on by industrialization, globalization, and political unrest, these figures found themselves connecting with their religious impulses in groundbreaking ways, inspiring others to move away from the oppressive weight of organized faith and toward the intimacies and opportunities that spirituality offered.

In this reflection, Fr. John Strickland relates how Christianity ceased to motivate and regulate statecraft in Christendom following the Wars of Western Religion. He discusses the cases of France, England, and New England. He concludes with an account of westernization in Eastern Christendom under Peter the Great of Russia.
You know that friend who gets to the gym 7 days every week. I think we all have that friend (if we're not that friend). I don't think I've ever heard a friend like that called “weak” for working out regularly. Quite the opposite. Sometimes that friend gets called “obsessive” or something like that (often by people who aren't taking their physical health as seriously)But.. even, in that case, they're overdoing a good thing; nobody is suggesting that the desire to hit the gym is, in and of itself a sign and practice of weakness. So, why isn't that the case with therapy? Why is it that, even now, after all, we know about brain chemistry, the control mechanisms in human psychology, and the well-funded attempts by markets, political systems, and corporations to manipulate human thought and emotion.. that the dominant pushback folks have about going to therapy.. is about being, or appearing “weak?” I don't really know the answer to that in full What I know is that some of the language used to critique psychotherapy and the need for it emanates from Western Religion. Peter Teagle has 20 years experience of working with international students and delivering talks to multi-cultural audiences events across the UK in that time. He has put his experience of answering questions of the Christian faith into a book that aims to both help the UK church and answer the questions internationals are asking. We will be discussing the differences in questions and experiences for international students and why the UK church should adapt their student ministries rather than expect internationals to assimilate. We will also be talking about what it means to contextualise the gospel message and where Christians often get this wrong. Last time we talked about the ghostly apparition that is known generally as The Black Dog. It appears throughout the United Kingdom and is often seen as an omen, a foreteller of death, a spectral remnant of some tragic event, a haunter of boundaries and churchyards and sometimes a friendly guardian. Today, however, as we inch closer to Samhain and the barriers between worlds get ever more fragile, we are going to come face to face with some more malevolent mutts. Specific black dogs and the places they have wrought fear upon, black dogs as symbols of devils and witchery, and a look back at some potential origins for this canine creep in the roots of British mythology. The influence of Western Religion on African Culture
Interview with David Fitzgerald. He and his wife Dana Fredsti have finished the 2nd of three books in the "Time Shards" trilogy. David has also written several books on religion. Including:- Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed At All- Jesus: Mything in Action (Vol 1,2,3)- The Complete Heretic's Guide to Western Religion, Book 1 - MormonsInvesting Skeptically : Book recommendations and basic investing philosophy.Extra audio:- Ayaan Hirsi Ali - I disagree with my father- Brian Gree on Dark Matter
David's book 'The Complete Heretic's Guide to Western Religion: The Mormons' is not your usual snipe at faith that Atheists can bore you with. His history of the Mormons is straight-shooting without being unfeeling; it's efficient without cutting too many corners, and it leaves one feeling both impressed and rightly appalled at the faith that gave us the 'Family's Can Be Together Forever' and a disciplinary culture that would make God blush. David Fitzgerald and I are unlikely conversations partners; me a theologian and spiritual formation enthusiast and he an avowed atheist. But, it's one that seems to work well because we both have an appreciation for the absurd. And Mormonism is brimming with absurdities. Mormon history, as it turns out, makes its people and its past seriously interesting.
"Deconstructing" one's faith is a hot topic of discussion today. It seems that every week someone else is announcing online that they have deconstructed their faith: some say they are no longer restricting themselves to orthodox Christian doctrine; others leave the faith altogether. In this episode, Emily & Bethany discuss what exactly deconstruction is, how to respond to it, and what to do if you find yourself going through the deconstruction process.
We usually think of religion as something that makes us good--but what happens when religion is something that enables us to be bad? In this eye-opening episode Professor Christopher Driscoll makes the unusual and important observation that the Western God acts as a buffer against limitations for white people. That is, it makes it easier for white people to marginalize and commit violence against everybody else. Tune in to take a hard look at yourself and your neighbors. We discuss lynching, drone strikes, Trump, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

A working actor since age 8, Miles Szanto saw two sides of life—the privileged life of a working actor and the concrete walls of jail. His parents were addicted, then clean, then addicted, trafficking, in prison…he felt ashamed of his blood and felt unsafe, but acting saved him, and keeps saving him. The greatest lesson he is learning now is to not let external forces validate how he feels about himself; that he has worth no matter what happened in the past or what he is working on. Miles has been working professionally as an actor since he was a child. He completed extensive training at the Australian Theatre for Young People, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy on a scholarship, Steppenwolf Theater West and was later invited to attend David Mamet & William H Macy’s prestigious Atlantic Acting School in New York City. He has appeared in the stage production and the Australian cast record of The Wizard of Oz and then went on to perform in the Sam Mendes production of Oliver The Musical(Cameron Macintosh Productions). In 2011 Miles acted as Eliot in Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton’s Sydney Theatre Company production of Tusk Tusk and later as Melochior Gabor in the Oregon tour of Spring Awakening the Musical. He has appeared in such Australian TV series as; Snobs, award winning cable drama Love My Way(Seasons 2 & 3), European hit & AFI award winning The Elephant Princess(Seasons 1 & 2), Dead Girls Detective Agency(pilot) and the FX series Married. He has appeared as presenter on K-Zone TV, Studio Disney and AMTV on Disney. His film credits include Drowning(which screened at the Cannes Film Festival), Blue Monday(which he co-wrote with director Craig Boreham), Ostia: La Notte Finale, Bruno and Earlene Go To Vegas(for which he won Best Performance at the 2014 Transgender Film Festival), Western Religion, Electric Mirrors, Unravel and Teenage Kicks. For his role in Teenage Kicks, Miles was presented with the 2017 Iris Prize for Best Actor in a feature film, and award that is lovingly referred to as the gay Oscars. Miles is also becoming an accomplished filmmaker and in 2016 he wrote and directed the Huffington Post distributed docu-series ‘Facing Addiction; Across America”.
In this final episode of Part 2 of the podcast, Fr. John discusses the catastrophic wars that broke out in western Christendom during the Reformation age. These wars, along with other forces unleashed by developments in the Reformation and earlier, would ultimately result in the loss of Christianity's legitimacy, leading to the rise of a modern, secularized form of Christendom centered upon the experience of utopia.
The Vatican and Jesuit Order Run the World In this episode we examine the roots of western religion and ask if the roots of this tree are poisoned. The Vatican and Jesuit order can be directly tied too much of western life to include religion, law and the corporate straw man identity covered in recent […] The post 048 – The Saturnian Vatican, Jesuits & the Roots of Western Religion – Bearing Poison Fruits appeared first on Crrow777 Radio.
De-Anthropomorphizing The Universe / Science & The Filter Bubblewith Cory Allen, Audio Mastering Engineer & Mindfulness Trainer, Host of The Astral Hustle Podcasthttp://cory-allen.comhttp://releaseintonow.com“It’s just all what is. And I accept every state of being as glorious.”Two dedicated truth-seekers and cosmos-abiders make a lot of dirty jokes and somehow manage to harmonize their angles on the practice of rigorous inquiry into the nature of reality and consciousness…We have a totally tangential, irreverent, penetrating conversation. (Luckily for you it’s audio only.) Somehow it all hangs together…much like Cory and I would, if they ever found out about the unrecorded parts of this chat. (Kidding!)• The paradox of having a podcast that emphasizes memory and continuity having SO. MANY. RECORDING. GLITCHES. Bizarre plumage that doesn’t fossilize and how truly precious little we know of the ancient world.• Noticing what weirds you out: your surprise reveals your expectation.• Cory Allen’s “creepy” super intense memory – and memory versus recordings – isn’t it kind of wrong to rely on recordings to justify or validate the way we feel right now?• Feathered dinosaurs screwing up our whole perception of dinosaurs as monsters. Scales versus feathers and how humans are so quick to judge based on the surfaces…“Got a face? We’ll give you the time of day. Worms? You’re going to be laboratory experiments. Snakes? We’re going to use you as a symbol for evil in the entire course of Western Religion because you have no arms and legs. You’ve got a face, but you’re the face of evil. Try again. But rabbits? Dogs? Cats? We take care of them because they’re furry.”• Encountering the dragon on the edge of the map and realizing that it’s you…versus not being able to see the faces of the people you’re firing on as a drone pilot. The closer you get to “it” the more it is you.• The value of noticing our projections and how we colonialism the world “out there” with our own ideas and imaginations. Everything we think about HUMAN consciousness is just CONSCIOUSNESS.• Taking the human element out of consciousness.• Vocabulary Word: Allopoeisis: the process of becoming the other.• Talking with animals to explore the nature of consciousness from as far beyond our human filter as we can. (How much are we anthropomorphizing Koko the Gorilla’s command of language?)• Watch out for clamping down on the word “is” when trying to relate your personal experience…as soon as you’re talking about “how it is” you’re not paying attention to your own subjectivity and recognizing its role in your experience.• We never see beyond the virtual reality of our nervous system, but it’s also the case that there is no separation between self and other in the ecosystem that precipitates “them” “both.”“On the one hand you can never really know the other. On the other hand, you never know anything BUT the other.”“Because you ARE the other.”“Right.”• Seeing through the academic pretense of objectivity to the necessity of describing the full details of your instruments (including your own nervous system) used in your experiments. The impossibility of perfectly replicating an experiment. Data from studies of psi phenomena show self-verifying results dependent on the belief sets of the experimenter – both positive and negative – even in very tightly controlled and blinded studies.• The politics, stress, absurdity, and pressure of the academic world and how it inhibits the very exploration to which it’s devoted. Cory’s friend who worked on the roundworm C. elegant and the nature of his research…and near-madness undergoing the completion of his PhD program.• The social construction of knowledge: this is where “facts” come from, people!• “School” and “Scholar” comes from a word that meant “leisure.”• The more narrowly focused our attention, the more we have to compete for one another’s attention. The social ills of the filter bubble. The diminishment of chance encounters and surprise interactions because of our constricted and self-reinforcing “reality tunnels.”• The Nutcracker is an awesome, very self-aware ballet…which Cory would have never seen if he hadn’t gotten outside of his own bubble.• The documentary “Century of the Self” and how marketing has gone from advertising products to advertising lifestyles and appealing to the consumer’s ego.• How diversity and redundancy are essential to the health and vitality of society (as with any ecosystem). How we NEED oppositional perspectives to enrich the whole – and what would happen if Trump and Clinton supporters could recognize this? When will this be common sense?• Michael’s spiritual practice of listening to radio stations he wouldn’t ordinarily choose and finding out why millions of people tune in and enjoy those stations.“You can appreciate it without liking it.”“You have to look at it long enough until you see yourself in it.”• Advertising fake products from the future.• The intimacy of evolution and extinction, entropy and complexity.• Astrosexuality and the CRISPR-induced end of identity politics. The future of identity: radically creative and diverse, or a mushy bowl of oatmeal?“I think everyone will become so nuanced in their identity that it becomes a tapestry…everyone’s going to be SO individual that we’re all going to be exactly alike.”• If your social media followers were actually following you around in the street, and you had to turn around and talk to however many of them, how would that change the way you think about your platform as a creator? (“How would it change what you’re saying and how absurd it is?”) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In our 32nd episode of Themes & Memes, we take a look at the conspiracy-cult-classic 'Eyes Wide Shut', by Stanley Kubrick. Neither the high praise or ongoing deconstruction of this film within conspiracy culture are unwarranted, as the film blends edgy social critique with a highly esoteric storyline; using sexual tension to reveal the existence of a powerful and arcane secret order. We start by outlining the exoteric journey of protagonist Dr Bill Harford, before discussing the esoteric initiation that both him and the willing audience are manoeuvred through via symbolism and suggestion. Be sure to stay tuned, as in our next episode we continue our analysis of both the film and its director; looking at occult philosophy and ritual with eyes wide open.
