Johann Valentine Andrea claims to have written one such pamphlet to make fun of the growing interest in mystical and magical traditions shortly after the beginning of protestant era in Germany.Attempts at understanding the divine are plentiful and diverse, but there's a reasonable sort of logic to the idea that scientific pursuits can reveal the nature of the universe and its creator. Rosicrucianism has branched into scores of organizations, and is even found in some branches of Freemasonry. Nathan, who has more than 15 years of experience in TV and film production, is confronting megachurches and their pastors with their lack of financial accountability. He's demanding to know their salaries and housing allowances—and he's not taking no for an answer. Last month, he got arrested when he showed up at Ed Young's megachurch in Grapevine, Texas, carrying signs asking what Ed's salary and housing allowance is. Prior to that, Nathan had a run-in with the security team of televangelist Kenneth Copeland on Copeland's expansive ministry complex, including a mansion and jet runway. Why do megachurches have security teams that protect them from honest questions? Why do so few congregations know what their pastors make? And why do filmmakers get arrested when they demand transparency? Buckle up, because this is a wild interview with someone who's a bit of a cowboy when it comes to his tactics. On Thursday January 19th,2023 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss the 2016 book "The Ba'al Theory of Christianity" by author Glenn Young. This book is subtitled: "Exploring the Impact of Human Sacrifice on Western Religion." This subtitle and Young's insistence on equating Carthaginian child sacrifices with Palestinian Phoenician ritual practices is our only real complaint about this otherwise well-researched  and strongly presented book. The author touches all the bases in explaining the differences between Yahwehism and the original worship of El and the Elohim. He describes Ezra's rewrite of the Bible and even mentions Joseph and Moses as the possible leaders of the Hyksos. Although he is wrong in assuming that Sidon and Tyre practiced child sacrifice in Classical times he may be correct in assuming that Carthaginian practices might have influenced the Druids and the Nordics and later the witchcraft persecutions. It is unfortunate that he fails to consider that even though the Carthaginians were originally Phoenician they, like the ancient Egyptians, were also African. This will be a very thought provoking and controversial subject.

Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) argues that the Greek word pistis often translated as “faith” is better understood as “allegiance.” Therefore, we are justified by allegiance to Christ alone, not simply by an intellectual assent to the facts about Jesus. This, of course, raises deep theological questions about the role of human action in justification and salvation and whether the Reformers understood things correctly when they talked about justification by faith alone. Matthew is a Professor of Theology at Quincy University. His main teaching area is the Bible and early Christian literature. He also teaches courses in Western Religion, Church History, and Christian Spirituality. Dr. Bates is an award-winning author. His popular and influential books include Gospel Allegiance (Brazos, 2019), Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic, 2017), and The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015). Current book projects on salvation and christology are underway. Dr. Bates also co-hosts OnScript, a Bible and theology podcast. He enjoys family life, hiking, baseball, and good conversation. We often think of the late nineteenth century in Western societies as an era of immense technological and scientific change, moving from religion to secularism, from faith to logic. But today's guest, Dominic Green, author of The Religious Revolution: The Birth of Modern Spirituality, 1848-1898 (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; April 19, 2022) religion in the past was much stronger, and much weirder, than we give it credit. Tsame period that introduced Darwin's theory of evolution, democratic revolutions, mass urbanization, and the Industrial Revolutions, also brought with it new kinds of religiosity. It wasn't an absence of religion, but instead new forms of spirituality that filled the vacuum left behind by the diminished prominence of the Church in European and American politics and life.While fueled by rapid scientific and technological innovation, these formative decades were also a time of great social strife. The same period that welcomed the invention of the telephone and the motor vehicle, the de jure abolishment of slavery and serfdom, the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, and countless seminal artistic and literary movements, was also plagued by the aggressive rise of capitalism and colonialism, subjecting entire populations to the West's bottomless appetite for money and power. You know that friend who gets to the gym 7 days every week. I think we all have that friend (if we're not that friend). I don't think I've ever heard a friend like that called “weak” for working out regularly. Quite the opposite. Sometimes that friend gets called “obsessive” or something like that (often by people who aren't taking their physical health as seriously)But.. even, in that case, they're overdoing a good thing; nobody is suggesting that the desire to hit the gym is, in and of itself a sign and practice of weakness.So, why isn't that the case with therapy? David's book 'The Complete Heretic's Guide to Western Religion:  The Mormons' is not your usual snipe at faith that Atheists can bore you with.   His history of the Mormons is straight-shooting without being unfeeling; it's efficient without cutting too many corners, and it leaves one feeling both impressed and rightly appalled at the faith that gave us the 'Family's Can Be Together Forever' and a disciplinary culture that would make God blush. David Fitzgerald and I are unlikely conversations partners; me a theologian and spiritual formation enthusiast and he an avowed atheist. But, it's one that seems to work well because we both have an appreciation for the absurd.  And Mormonism is brimming with absurdities.  Mormon history, as it turns out,  makes its people and its past seriously interesting.

David Fitzgerald is an atheist activist, a historical researcher, a writer and an international public speaker. He was the co-founder and director of the world's first Atheist Film Festival and San Francisco's oldest annual Darwin Day celebration, which is called “Evolutionpalooza!”. Today he is on the Speaker's Bureau for the Secular Student Alliance and the Center for Inquiry. He is also the author of “NAILED: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed At All” and “The Complete Heretic's Guide to Western Religion” series. We talked to him about his latest book, which is called “Jesus Mything in Action”.

A working actor since age 8, Miles Szanto saw two sides of life—the privileged life of a working actor and the concrete walls of jail. His parents were addicted, then clean, then addicted, trafficking, in prison…he felt ashamed of his blood and felt unsafe, but acting saved him, and keeps saving him. The greatest lesson he is learning now is to not let external forces validate how he feels about himself; that he has worth no matter what happened in the past or what he is working on. Miles has been working professionally as an actor since he was a child. He completed extensive training at the Australian Theatre for Young People, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy on a scholarship, Steppenwolf Theater West and was later invited to attend David Mamet & William H Macy’s prestigious Atlantic Acting School in New York City.  He has appeared in the stage production and the Australian cast record of The Wizard of Oz and then went on to perform in the Sam Mendes production of Oliver The Musical(Cameron Macintosh Productions). In 2011 Miles acted as Eliot in Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton’s Sydney Theatre Company production of Tusk Tusk and later as Melochior Gabor in the Oregon tour of Spring Awakening the Musical. He has appeared in such Australian TV series as; Snobs, award winning cable drama Love My Way(Seasons 2 & 3), European hit & AFI award winning The Elephant Princess(Seasons 1 & 2), Dead Girls Detective Agency(pilot) and the FX series Married. He has appeared as presenter on K-Zone TV, Studio Disney and AMTV on Disney. His film credits include Drowning(which screened at the Cannes Film Festival), Blue Monday(which he co-wrote with director Craig Boreham), Ostia: La Notte Finale, Bruno and Earlene Go To Vegas(for which he won Best Performance at the 2014 Transgender Film Festival), Western Religion, Electric Mirrors, Unravel and Teenage Kicks. For his role in Teenage Kicks, Miles was presented with the 2017 Iris Prize for Best Actor in a feature film, and award that is lovingly referred to as the gay Oscars. Miles is also becoming an accomplished filmmaker and in 2016 he wrote and directed the Huffington Post distributed docu-series ‘Facing Addiction; Across America”.

In this final episode of Part 2 of the podcast, Fr. John discusses the catastrophic wars that broke out in western Christendom during the Reformation age. These wars, along with other forces unleashed by developments in the Reformation and earlier, would ultimately result in the loss of Christianity's legitimacy, leading to the rise of a modern, secularized form of Christendom centered upon the experience of utopia.
