This conversation was supposed to be about yoga, and it was, kind of. But, really it was about healing and how yoga can help you with that. Welcome to the second part of my conversation with Adi Kaur, owner and founder of Inglenook Yoga - the first Black Owned Yoga Studio in Birmingham Alabama. In this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, Adi gives advice for beginners, tells us about her experience working at Lululemon, and discusses what it was like to work with her husband. We talk:Advice for beginner yogis - 4:51Adi's experience at Lululemon - 13:29Working with her husband - 24:32How you can get in touch with Adi - 32:57In this episode I get vulnerable about my spiritual journey and the things I've been dealing with this year. 3 Yoga Benefits for Black Women with Adi Kaur

What is the main difference between yoga and exercise? Mindful breath. When you practice yoga asanas, you are breathing into and out of poses. When you exercise, you may not be breathing at all. Adi Kaur goes more into detail about this in episode #52 of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, and she goes in! Adi is the owner and founder of Inglenook Yoga - the first Black Owned Yoga Studio in Birmingham Alabama, and we have a really dope conversation about bringing vision to life, benefits of yoga, and education vs. fear.We talk:Raising the money to build her studio - 4:29Being introduced to yoga on a date - 13:33Benefits of yoga - 20:58How yoga is not a religion/demonic - 33:38Building a stronger connection to the divine - 41:39Adi is a true believer and you can really hear the divine speaking through her. She talks about the importance of walking like a child of God, and not just when it benefits you. Her yoga studio started as a vision in her head, but she manifested it by speaking it into existence everyday, planning ahead, and putting herself in the position to receive. One of my favorite topics was about how many of us limit God. We forget that we are human and can't even fathom the power and intellect of the divine, but she reminds us that God is in everything, and prayer goes both ways. We just have to be still and listen! So what are the 3 yoga benefits for Black women:Helps you to advocate for yourself and stand in truthHelps you heal from trauma, personal and generational Helps you stay curious about your bodyYa'll this conversation was so good, I had to split it in half, so stay tuned for part 2, coming soon!*Get your ticket for The Black Love Healing Circle today on Eventbrite and use code PINKLADY for $10 off! How to Create an Inclusive Ministry of Love with Tamika Chambers

You don't have to earn rest! You body needs it and won't function well without it. But, everything we consume tells us that we don't. Instead, we are encouraged to be productive at all costs, to live like there is no tomorrow, and to sleep when you're dead. Well, death comes a lot sooner for people who don't intentionally rest their bodies. And, in this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, we're back with another amazing Black woman yogi, Tamika Chambers, and she talks about this in detail! She teaches us the importance of rest and assures us that listening to your body is the key.We talk:The importance of asking for consent - 5:05Discomfort vs pain - 16:10Spirit and energy in yoga - 26:20Advice for yogi beginners - 31:03Her response to "yoga is demonic" - 42:27Practicing stillness in different ways - 51:33Tamika also talks a lot about taking up space, which can be hard for many Black women because it isn't something we're familiar with. Many of us don't even know how to take up space. As a child, I was never taught to do that. I was never told to be myself or make everything about me. I never knew how to advocate for myself or speak up for what I wanted. In fact, many times I was instructed to do the opposite. "Shrink to fit yourself into this young, Christian, lady box (no pun intended)," and, "You don't need to say anything. God will handle it!" I always struggled with these things! That's one of the reasons I love yoga so much, because it's all about me. It's a personal practice that I can modify to fit my needs. I can take up as much space as I want and I can focus on my spirit, without having to explain anything to anyone. Tamika is an ordained minister and one thing I always hear about yoga is how demonic it is. It's not of God so it has to be of the devil, right?*rolls eyes* So I had to ask how she reconciles the two, and her answer was beautiful: her ministry is love! Love is inclusive. Love is caring. And, that is what she focuses on. She also draws many parallels between Christian and yoga practices. For example, think about meditation and prayer, or psalms and affirmations, or lighting candles and lighting incense. Instead of focusing on the differences between them, see the similarities.*Get your ticket for The Black Love Healing Circle today on Eventbrite and use code PINKLADY for $10 off! 50 episodes! WTF?! Most podcasts don't even make it past 3, so this is a reason to celebrate! In this episode I talk about why I started this podcast in the first place and how it has progressed over the last two years. I also recap all 49 episodes so far. This podcast started off as a resource for podcasting. I wanted to give you insight and tips. And, I did that. The first season was all about Podcasting 101. I talked about everything you needed to start a podcast: topics, equipment, mindset, etc. I even shared the steps to start a podcast for free!Soon after that, I realized that I didn't want the podcast to be all about podcasting. I wanted to collaborate and interview. I wanted to discuss other topics. So, I started experimenting...The second season of Podcasting Is the New Kink! was all about HBO's Lovecraft Country. It was my first review and it sort-of set the tone for future seasons. I talked about my favorite and least-liked moments, themes that drove the story line, and diversions from the book and more. I get really passionate about my shows and you could tell by how I started sharing more of my personal opinions, letting you in. But, something was nagging at me to go deeper, so the third season was all about me! I shared a few of the journeys that changed my life and helped me to become more of myself, and it felt really good to get a lot of that off my chest. After that, I was ready to keep experimenting, so I tried interviews. In season four I interviewed clients: my first, current, former, and... my mom. Lol. She wanted to start a podcast and I knew I would be comfortable with her. We talked about leaning into your curiosity, growing through guilt, and more. And, that brought us to episode 25, which was another celebration just like this! If you haven't noticed, I like to celebrate! :)The next season of Podcasting Is the New Kink! was all about FX's Kindred, which was cancelled after one season. And I am PISSED because they didn't even finish the story! I talked about that in the season. I also talked about diversions from the book, themes and characters, predictions for the season that we may never get and more.Season six was all about intimate partnerships! I sat down with The Amazing Clarks, Dee and Bee Hendershot (Truth and Coffee Time), and Snooks and Lovey Cason (Married Into Crazy). I learned so much from them and I absolutely recommend them! After I got my free sessions from the experts, I talked to a few of my friends who are in relationships and I honestly learned a lot from them as well. I also brought my partner back to talk about the major themes that came up in just about every episode. That brings us to the current season which is all about Black Women Yogis. I spoke to many yogis about the benefits and versatility of yoga, especially for POC, and getting out of your comfort zone. But, to be honest, this season is moreso about healing! So, I also spoke to other healing practitioners about how Black people can heal!ReferencesPoddster ArticleExploding Topics Article Podcasting Is the New Kink! is a Black-owned, woman-owned podcast, and we support other Black, Indigenous, Women of Color-owned podcasts and businesses. The Importance of Building Trust Within Your Community with Meli Acevedo

It's all about community. That was the resounding message in this episode with Meli Acevedo, certified yoga instructor, climate and environmental justice warrior, and overall badass! No matter what we talked about, the conversation always looped back to the importance of community and building trust. And, let me tell you, we discussed it all!Disclaimer: Meli recorded this episode outside in her beautiful yard so you may hear wind blowing at times, adding to the ambience. Also, this episode is a little longer than usual, but I promise you it's worth it!We talk:Why it's important to build community - 12:05My intro to yoga story - 25:31Being aware of the energy shared in yoga classes - 33:14Having discernment in helping - 41:41Yoga is for every body. Period! - 55:57Detaching from perfectionism - 1:07:36Meli teaches us how to have the discernment to help others. Many times, we get so caught up in the "help," part, that we don't pay attention to the "how," or the "what." Meaning, we want to help people so badly that we aren't interested in how they need to be helped or what we can actually provide. Her advice is to take it step-by-step:First ask yourself: what is your role in situation? Then ask yourself: what's your capacity to help? Then, ask the person you want to help for permission We also talk about perfection and I almost gagged when she said, "Perfection does not exist!" If you've listened to season one of this podcast or followed @pinkladyprod on Instagram or TikTok, then you heard me say something like this at least once. And it is something I absolutely believe!I used to be a perfectionist. I would stress over every little detail of every little thing. How I looked, how I sounded, how I was perceived by everyone... I had to learn, through years of life coaching and a spiritual journey that is kicking my butt (in a good way), that what I was striving for was a fake, shallow version of myself. And, I had no control over all the things I was trying to control. What can go wrong, will go wrong! That's what they say in theatre, and it is especially true of life.So here's my unsolicited advice to all of the perfectionists of the world: Instead of striving to be perfect, strive instead to do your best and be your authentic self.Check out Meli on Instagram @fatbrowngirlyoga.Episode References:Hood Feminism - book by Mikki KendallDiRTYOGA on InsatgramIgnite Yoga & Wellness InstituteEp. 4 - Forget about perfection and start your podcast!Ep. 44 - How to Feel Empowered and Rested with Ebony MolockEp. 46 - Finding Connection, Community, and Comfort in Yoga with Black Rose Yogini*This episode was produced by Pink Lady Productions --> pinkladyprod.com Podcasting Is the New Kink! is a Black-owned, woman-owned podcast, and we support other Black, Indigenous, Women of Color-owned podcasts and businesses. We are back with another episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, and we are back with another amazing Black women yogi! Last week's episode was all about breathwork and I think it's a great segue back into our yogis because this episode is all about breath movement aka yoga. Our western culture has made yoga seem like it's all about the poses! It's all about getting that burn and working out your body. But today we are getting a reminder of what yoga is really about: the breath. Today's yogi is a certified yoga instructor, children's author, and business owner, who has been in the wellness space for years. She fully understands pivoting in your business, because she has done it a number of times. And, she is actually a friend from high school, who hails from the great Paterson, NJ, just like me. Lol.Her name is Qyera Parks and she works with children, teaching them yoga, and about mental health and wellness. And, ya'll know how much I love it! Working with children is not for the faint of heart. They will test you and try you in every way possible. But it is really one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. And, reaching them at a young age, teaching them how to manage their emotions and regulate their reactions is so important! It's really giving them a better chance at life.In this episode we discuss the many phases of her business, going to India for her yoga teaching certification, being the only Black person in a yoga space, and much more!We talk:How Qyera's business started and the journey until now - 1:55Benefits of yoga - 12:59Being the only Black person in yoga spaces - 22:28Mindful Moments with Friends': Breathwork for Kids 5-8 - 34:22Advice for new yogis - 40:49We also get pretty deep, talking about why many Black people don't try yoga. As much as I would love to blame "them" and say that yoga has been gentrified (which it has), Qyera brings up a great point about "us" not showing up. And, she is so right. Part of the reason I wanted to interview yogis this season was to introduce yoga to many of you who aren't interested because you think it's not for you. Let me tell you, it is absolutely for you. This episode is not about yoga, and this episode's guest is not a Black woman, but bare with me and I promise it'll be worth your while! Today we are taking a break from yoga to talk about something that is similar because it also focuses on breath, but very different in the fact that it emphasizes only using the breath. We are diving into the world of breathwork with Darren Hagood of Heal Your Love Period (HYL.).Did you know there are four stages of breathing? I used to think there were just two: inhale and exhale. But, it actually goes inhale, hold, exhale, hold, and so on and so forth. I learned that and so much more from Darren. We talk:The difference between yoga and breathwork - 2:31What his customers get from his class - 13:14Breath as our first language - 27:09Advice for breathwork beginners - 37:22History of breathwork and Christian teachings - 41:12Why he started Heal Your Love Period - 1:00:47Darren goes in about the long history of connection between breathwork and Christian teachings. And ya'll know I was hella excited to hear all about it! When I grew up in my strict Christian home and church, it was all about the trinity; father, son, holy spirit. But did you know that the translation of the word "spirit" comes from the word "pneuma," an ancient Greek word for "breath"? If you're anything like me then your mind is blown! Trust me, mine was!Along with his wife Gloria, Darren created what they call the Black Love Healing Circle, and I can tell you from experience that it is just that. It includes breathwork, sound healing, and guided meditation, and it was an amazing experience that I would recommend for anyone, but especially people of color.Soo... what are five benefits of breathwork for Black people? One of my favorite things about yoga is how versatile it can be! Yoga can be a real workout where you push yourself to see what your body can do. It can be a meditation with slow movement and long holds. Or, it can be anything on that spectrum. It really just depends on what your body needs and what you want to get out of it. Have you ever felt stuck? Like you were running on autopilot doing the same thing over and over, and couldn't make any changes? Like you could see the path you wanted, but you couldn't take the steps to get there? I've felt like that at multiple points in my life, but I felt it the most right before I got laid off. If you've heard my story then you know that I was miserable working full-time in a job I hated and having multiple side-hustles just to have a creative outlet. Instead of making a choice, I waited for something to change. That layoff was my wake-up call. I started my podcasting business shortly after that, and this podcast shortly after that. I was sort of, pushed out of my comfort zone. But, you don't have to wait for that push. Yoga, like many other practices from the East, has been hella appropriated! So much so, most people of color still see it as "white people ish," even though it has become much more diverse in the past few years. But the origins of yoga come from ancient India and it is all about the connection between your body, mind, and spirit. In this season of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, I interviewed Black women yogis and I learned so much! I consider myself an intermediate yogi, so I thought I knew much more than I actually did. But, ya'll know how much I value knowledge, so I had a ball soaking up all I could.I also interviewed a few men, and a few non-yoga practitioners who are in the wellness/healing space. It's only March but 2024 has already been a wild year!Don't get me wrong, it started off kind of great. In the first few days of January, I got great news. There was interest in my podcasting program from The Boys and Girls Club, and I was accepted into The Blox, The Largest Competition TV Show On The Planet For Startups! These were great accomplishments that gave me hope for my future. I thought, "If 2024 is already starting off like this, what the hell does the rest of the year have in store?!" Well, January was far from over, and I was getting ready to find out.My birthday is in January and for the past few years I've had some kind of dope celebration with my loved ones. I had planned for this year to be the same, but you know what they say about making plans. For some reason, nothing was working out for me. The places I wanted to go either didn't have my date available, cost too much, or was further than I wanted to travel. So I gave in to the flow and played it safe: one dinner with some of my girls and a separate dinner with my partner. It seemed simple enough. The day before my birthday, my partner got a call, or should I say, the call. His grandmother's health was declining and it was time to say goodbye. So, I immediately canceled my birthday plans, and we made our way to her. She passed away on January 21st, my birthday, and I received the gift if grief. Three weeks later my partner the other call. This time it was about his grandfather. He passed away on February 7th. His mother's mother and his father's father. In this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink! I talk about this experience. I share the highs and lows that we went through in this short time. Experts or Newbies? My Favorite Lessons in Podcasting Is the New Kink! Season Six

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2024 27:09

I know I'm a day late, but I swear I'm not a dollar short! This episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink! is the first solo episode I've done in a while. It will be a recap of all the interviews this season, and I'm going to share my favorite moments and lessons.Season 6 started off with the relationship experts, the Black love gurus, if you will. The first interview was with the Amazing Clarks, Anthony and Melanie. Their relationship is goals! They talked about spirituality outside of religion, trading gifts with your partner, the importance of vulnerability, and so much more. One of my favorite lessons was the one about fighting to grow instead of fighting to win! Melanie talked about making your partner a loser when you fight to win. And how do you think you will treat a loser? The next interview was with Bee and Dee Hendershot, of the Truth and Coffee Time Podcast. Let me tell you right now, most of my laughter is usually edited out, but I was laughing so much during this interview that it just wasn't an option. They are hilarious! We talked about being a Black and white couple in the south, bringing baggage into your relationship, the importance and levels of honest and transparency, and more. We also talked about giving your partner grace and space. It seems like such a simple task, but it isn't always easy. When you are in the heat of things you want to solve problems right then and there. But that isn't always possible and pushing isn't always productive. The last expert interview was the craziest! Lol. Snooks and Lovey Cason are Married Into Crazy and in this episode they share the wild introduction to their love story. We talk about overcoming adversity and bouncing back stronger, the role of God in their relationship, the importance of respect and much more. They even made CRAZY an acronym standing for compassionate, real, accountable, zealous, and yielding - pillars to build your relationship on.I learned so much from these experts, but I also learned from the newbies. And I definitely enjoyed the conversations. My sister-cousin Amber and her boo Dre talked about the importance of really getting to know your partner instead of chasing titles. My bestest friend Nay and her fiance David shared their experience with therapy and how it propelled them to the next level in their relationship. And my brother Vee and his wife Teah describe how they manifested their marriage by walking the walk and using the power of partnership.I thought the last episode would be the last episode, but the I felt like this season deserved a recap because it was full of gems! I'm grateful to everyone who participated and to you the audience for listening. Thank you for making this season as awesome as it was. Major themes in part six of Podcasting Is the New Kink!

So how do you know if your relationship is on the right track? If you've listened to all of the episodes in part 6 of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, then you've heard a few themes that echoed throughout. Role fluidity, authenticity, respect, grace, honest and transparency, and communication were some of the many.Role fluidity is about letting go of traditional gender norms and playing to your strengths. Like, when the Amazing Clarks had their newborn baby and Anthony decided to stay home while Melanie went back to work. They talk about this in episode 32, the first part of their interview.Authenticity means being yourself. Your full self! And choosing a partner that encourages you to do that. You want a partner that helps you grow, not shrink! In episode 40, Teah talks about how Vee does that for her.Respect is the first step in every relationship, but especially an intimate partnership. Well it should be, anyway. How can you love someone you don't respect? Nay and David talk about the importance of respect in their relationship in episode 39.Grace is something that many people don't think about when it comes to intimate partnerships but it is very necessary. People mess up and sometimes our partners need us to be a little kinder. Dee and Bee Hendershot talk about how they give each other "grace and space" in episode 35, the second part of their interview.Honesty and Transparency go hand in hand. In episode 37, the second part of their interview, Snooks and Lovey talk about being real! Not using realness as a weapon, but as a tool. One you can especially use in conflict resolution. Communication is the most important part! None of these concepts mean anything if you don't tell your partner. In episode 38, with Bamber and Dre, we talk about how people are so quick to chase a title that they don't take the time to get to know each other. And, that's why half of marriages fail.In this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, my partner is back. I introduced him in episode 17, so check it out if you're interested in how we met and details about us. Today we're talking about these 6 topics. We define them and discuss what they mean to us.We talk:Role fluidity - 1:29Authenticity - 9:21Respect - 16:21Honesty and Transparency - 24:59Grace - 29:08And communication - 33:24 Do you love Podcasting Is the New Kink! and want to support us? The word "manifest" has become hella overused. These days many people use it to describe a magic process where you speak the things you want into the universe and those things just find their way to you. But, we know that that isn't how manifestation actually works, right? You still have to put in the work. Growing from religion into spirituality!

Do you believe in coincidence? I don't. I believe that there is a lesson in everything that happens in our lives. Even the things that hurt us, the shame and guilt we feel, the traumas we've had to endure, we can learn from all of it. And that's how I choose to live my life, but in order to learn from the pain, I had to face it and allow myself to feel it and heal from it. And I didn't learn that from going to church. I didn't learn that until I found spirituality outside of religion. In this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink! I talk:My religious upbringing and how that started my journeyHow I dealt with trauma and healing Becoming the spiritual mePlease send us any questions or comments you have. But it wasn't all happily ever after... Yes we loved each other, and yes we wanted to be in a relationship, but we had to learn how to show love to one another and how to be in a romantic partnership together. Why I aligned my personal and professional lives!

I grew up in a major code-switching era. I remember listening to my mom, my aunts, my friends moms', changing the way they spoke in front of their coworkers and colleagues. And I remember thinking, this must be normal. It was a regular thing to switch off and on the different parts of me, depending on when and where I was, and who was around. I would be one person at church, a whole different person at school or work, and I could sort-of, kind-of be myself at home. But I was never myself. That wasn't allowed. It wouldn't be until years and a worldwide pandemic later that I actually felt like I could be my full self. It would take a lot of slowing down and self-reflection, but I would get there eventually, and it would be the best thing I ever did for myself. In this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, I talk:Feeling like I had to keep my personal and professional lives separateWhy and How I started to incorporate bothWhat I've learned from being an entrepreneurPlease send us any questions or comments you have. Making peace with every part of me!

Religion is the ultimate tool of the patriarchy. It tells us how to live, how to think, and even how to just be. We are taught from a young age to bottle up our feelings and accept whatever is given to us. We are brainwashed to think that if we ever deviate from the plan the bible has laid out for us, then we are broken and we must seek forgiveness from God. But we know that that is all BS right? We know that religious tropes are used to keep us (the non-white, non-straight, non-cis, etc.) in line and them (the white, "straight," cis, man) in power. For years I though there was something wrong with me because I wasn't only attracted to men. My attraction was like a spectrum that just kept growing and growing. And it wasn't until college that I had to unlearn and relearn the truth about myself. The truth is that I'm not broken. I never have been. God doesn't make mistakes right? And he was right on the money with me!In this episode of Podcasting Is the New Kink!, I share my queer journey.
