In this compelling episode of Gangland Wire, retired Kansas City detective Gary Jenkins sits down with Kurt Calabrese, son of infamous Chicago Outfit enforcer Frank Calabrese Sr. Kurt opens up about what it was like growing up in the shadow of one of the most feared men in organized crime and living through the seismic fallout of the Family Secrets Trial. Kurt shares a deeply personal account of his childhood in Elmwood Park, an Italian-American neighborhood where the surface was peaceful but the undercurrent ran dark. He recalls days spent playing sports and evenings surrounded by neighbors who seemed like family—but behind the closed doors of their three-flat home, fear and control ruled. As the episode unfolds, Kurt discusses the moment he began to understand the truth about their father's real occupation. Taught to lie and protect the family's image, they told classmates their dad was an engineer—masking a far more dangerous truth. The psychological burden of carrying this secret is a recurring theme in Kurt's story. Kurt paints a vivid picture of mob family dynamics, the juxtaposition of family life and violence, and the emotional toll of being raised by a man, he both feared and revered. He reveals the lasting impact of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father and how it contributed to his own diagnosis of complex PTSD. Listeners will hear firsthand what living through the Family Secrets Trial was like, a landmark case that exposed the Chicago Outfit's inner workings. Kurt Calabrese speaks candidly about the threats he and his family faced, the betrayal from his brother Frank Jr.'s cooperation with the FBI, and his complicated relationship with the truth, loyalty, and justice. We also learn about Kurt's marriage to Angela LaPietra—the granddaughter of another mob figure—and the intense family conflict that followed. From physical altercations with his father to the ripple effects on his children, Kurt doesn't hold back. Click here for Kurt's website. Finally, Kurt introduces his podcast, Underbelly: Killing Kurt, where he digs deeper into his story to expose the unseen scars left by a life entangled in organized crime. This episode is an emotional and eye-opening exploration of how mob life impacts not just communities but also the families at its core. Kurt Calabrese is not just telling his story—he's reclaiming it. It's good to be back here [0:03] in the studio of Gangland Wire. I have a story today and an interview, as you can see. My interviewee is Kurt Calabrese. Now, Kurt Calabrese is from Chicago and he grew up in a Chicago outfit family. Now, a lot of you guys know, if you're real mob aficionados, you know about the Family Secrets Trial. And his father, Kurt's father, was Frank Calabrese Sr., his brother, Frank Calabrese Jr., who we had on the show several years ago. One of my earliest interviews, actually. And then his uncle, Nick Calabrese, ended up going to Witness Protection Program. And so that's why they called it the Family Secrets Trial, because it was all centered around the Calabrese family. So I really look forward to talking to Kurt. And Kurt, welcome. [0:53] Thank you, Gary. Thank you for having me. So, Kurt, we talked a little bit before the show. And, you know,
This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpeter, recording artist and co-founder of the bank Chicago, Lee Loughnane, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. About Lee Loughnane: Lee Loughane of the band Chicago joins host John Snell today to talk about discovering the trumpet and committing to a career in music, the groundbreaking idea of putting horns front and center in a rock and roll band, and stories of writing and recording some of those famous and iconic trumpet parts! Lee Loughlane was eleven when his father asked him if he wanted to play an instrument. His dad had played trumpet when he was a kid, all the way through his time in the Army Air Force, but the horn was now up in the attic. Fortunately, that meant Lee already had a great instrument: a Bach Stradivarius. Lee's dad took him to meet the band director at St. Celestine grade school in Elmwood Park, Ralph Meltzer, who said “show me your teeth.” He wanted to make sure they were straight so the mouthpiece wouldn't tear up the inside of Lee's lip. Lee passed the visual audition and became a trumpet player that day. Lee met Walt Parazaider at Depaul University; Walt was playing in a band called The Missing Links and invited Lee to come sit in with them. Terry Kath and Danny Seraphine were also in the band. When they broke up, Walt wanted to form a horn band, which was initially going to be a Las Vegas show band, but turned out to be Chicago. Once they got signed to a record deal with Columbia Records, the group went to New York and recorded the Chicago Transit Authority album at the 42nd Street studio. Having never recorded before, it was very intimidating standing in front of a Neumann mic. These mics pick up every aspect of your playing, so there's a learning curve until you figure out how to relax and blend with the band. The group learned more and more about the recording process through the years and as the technology developed, they developed along with it. Chicago continue to tour the world every year, including with original members Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Robert Lamm. Lee has put together a traveling studio in order to record on the road, with much less overhead. The late great Phil Ramone advised them to, "Get a great mic and a great preamp." You can't start with mediocre stuff and make it great later. It's got to be the best sound right off the bat, then you can enhance the sound even more in mixing and mastering. Lee and audio engineer Tim Jessup convinced the rest of the band that the studio was going to be good enough quality to make a record with, and they recorded a version of “Dialogue”, on the bus, one instrument at a time and then mixed. Everybody was so pleased with the final product that Chicago XXXVl was recorded over 2013-14 without going into a studio. Chicago have kept very busy throughout their career, and it's not slowing down. In fact, they're busier than any of them could have ever imagined they'd be. As Lee says, "I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing." What a pleasure to be joined in this episode by rock icon and horn legend Lee Loughnane, someone who helped pioneer an entire genre of music and gave horns exposure to a whole new audience. Ben Adams grew up in the Elmwood Park neighborhood of Columbia, South Carolina. As a child, he couldn't wait to move to a larger city. Ben went to college in Washington, DC and then moved to New York City. During visits back to Columbia, he was impressed by the revitalization happening in Columbia's downtown. Eventually, Ben decided to move back to Columbia to pursue his dream of opening a bookstore. In early 2020, he opened Odd Bird Books in The Arcade Building, a recently restored shopping arcade on Columbia's Main Street that was built in 1912. In 2023, Odd Bird Books will be replaced by All Good Books, a bookstore in Columbia's Five Points neighborhood that Ben will be opening in partnership with Clint and Jenna Wallace.

If you like music, Chicago culture and kickass tavern food, this is your episode. Photographer Gene Ambo joins me to talk about his massive new coffee table book, “HEAVY METRO: ACCESS ALL ERAS.” The book covers 40 years of live music on and off the legendary stage of Chicago's Metro (3730 N. Clark Street). The book is a mind-blowing collection of performance and backstage shots, including metal giants Slayer, Metallica and Motorhead; alternative superstars Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, Ramones, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers; and punk heroes like Naked Raygun and Descendents. We talk about the stories behind the shots, and the moods and the attitudes of the artists in the pictures. This episode was fueled by the insanely good burgers at Circle Tavern (18 Conti Parkway, Elmwood Park). Owner/all around kickass dude Mike Jardine jumped in the backseat to join in the conversation and talk about Circle Tavern's menu and history. In the roughly year-and-a-half span since her project, Sincere Engineer, released Rhombithian — the band’s debut album — on Red Scare Industries, Deanna Belos has earned heaps of attention and praise from music publications and punk audiences alike. Along the way, the Chicago singer-songwriter got the opportunity to open for notable acts, tour the country, play some huge festivals in Montreal and Florida, and hit the road with her idols in The Lawrence Arms. Belos recently met up with My First Band host Tyler Maas at a room he'd reserved at a public library in Elmwood Park, Illinois. There, they discussed their shared love of Norm Macdonald, and Deanna talked about Sincere Engineer's exciting 2018, teaching herself Alkaline Trio and Lawrence Arms songs as a teenager in suburban Chicago, her soon-to-be-released beer, and how giving a stranger a ride unknowingly started a chain of events that led to a record deal. Along the way, there were lots of fun deviations and the repeated realization they were doing this interview in a public library. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and and PrideFest Milwaukee. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and Sincere Engineer ("Ghosts In The Graveyard").
Few have heard of Josh Caterer's first band — Speedstick — but after a name change and a swap of drummers, that band, now The Smoking Popes, quickly made a name for themselves in the early '90s Chicago punk scene. The Smoking Popes toured relentlessly, signed to Capitol Records and even appeared on the Clueless soundtrack. The band would break up in 1998 after four studio albums but reunited in 2005 and have put out an additional four albums, including 2018's "Into the Agony." Caterer recently invited My First Band host Tyler Maas into his on-the-market home in Elmwood Park, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. The 47-year-old front man, who is also a worship pastor at a nearby church, updated fans on his current projects before discussing coming up in a musical family along with his two bandmate brothers, discovering punk rock thanks to his cousin's record collection and learning that his ability to hear a song and almost immediately play it on guitar was unique. Caterer also discussed the benefits and pitfalls of stalkers, the influence traditional pop singers had on his singing style, and a special moment he shared with the other Smoking Popes on the roof of Capitol Records. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and The Smoking Popes ("Simmer Down").

Chicago scene stalwarts Bury Me in Lights jump in the car for a visit to the phenomenal Burger Moovment in Elmwood Park (Go there immediately: 7512 W North Ave, Elmwood Park, IL 60707). Car Con Carne is sponsored by BOOST MOBILE. Discussed in this episode: I had Burger Moovment's Poutine Burger (a double, no less). It was decadent and amazing. Bury Me In Lights frontman Robert Biskoski kept his burger simple: "I'm a meat purist." The "Twisted Swisster" special burger was also consumed. Contrary to what was discussed, it does not come with a side of Dee Snider au jus. The difference between Judas Priest and Twisted Sister. Burger Moovment is pronounced "Burger M-O-O-vment." The power of Bury Me In Lights merch. "Who had the footlong?" "That's me, sir." Guess which band member did time? "You know this is a podcast, right?" Anyone know of a good Pog-cast? "99% of the time, I'm full of burger." Bury Me In Lights history: From 2009 through today. Bury Me In Lights is the fastest-eating band on the Chicago scene. Is it a good time to be on the Chicago scene? My first adult feature: Communal Sack Robert brings an acoustic guitar into the car for a killer in-car performance of the old Bury Me In Lights song "The Way I Wish."
Michael Ray named his new album after his grandfather. What is the name of his new album? Did Donna from Elmwood Park study up enough to get that right in Roman's College of Country Knowledge? Study up and email Mornings@US99.com to enroll!
This week, "punk rock doctor" Daryl Wilson joins me for a beef and sausage combo from one of the greatest places on earth, Johnnie's Beef (7500 W North Ave, Elmwood Park, IL 60707). Daryl's most famously known as the frontman for legendary Chicago punk rock band The Bollweevils. By day, he's the EMS Medical Director at Edward Hospital in Naperville. If you're listening to this before Thanksgiving 2017, go see Bollweevils with Pegboy on 11/22 at 1st Ward/Chop Shop! Here's what we chatted about on this week's Boost Mobile-sponsored extravaganza: Daryl went hot; I went sweet My first contact with Daryl, and the punk rock ethics that kept us separated in the 1990s My sense of relief that Daryl's a doctor, as I committed myself to the not-cardiac-friendly beef combo. The time I was flipped off in Wicker Park, just for working in radio Daryl's med school experience Daryl and I wore kinda-similar outfits to the podcast recording The documentary "Men: The Series," which features Daryl Daryl's strange burping issue The temptation of going for a second round of beef/sausage combos: Do we do it? We surely aren't that irresponsible... right? Daryl's most fond memories of the 90s Chicago's punk scene vs. Metro in the 90s The Bollweevils vs. Metro in the 90s ("Were you guys banned from Metro?" "Technically, yes.") The Fireside Bowl and the horrifying bathrooms there The ongoing influence of Naked Raygun ("they're the shit") What would have happened to the Bollweevils had Daryl not gone to med school? Technically, Daryl could kill any of his bandmates and bring them back to life My gratitude to Daryl's wife for letting him spend the night eating like an asshole with me The topic that causes Daryl to freeze The great Power Man and Iron Fist comic books of days past
