Liv's Perspective: Connection between Bitcoin, Human Behavior, and Well-Being"In this episode of 'The Orange Hatter', the guest, Liv, a psychologist from Germany who lives in America, discusses her understanding of Bitcoin in relation to cognitive psychology and systemic behavior. She delves into the topic of why individuals are often resistant to Bitcoin, attributing this to the subconscious safety cues from our environment that correlate with our current financial system. These safety cues induce a feeling of security and disrupt the notion of adopting an entirely new system like Bitcoin. Liv goes on to articulate how Bitcoin offers stability, predictability, and inspires individuals to plan for the future - key elements that she argues are vital for our wellbeing. The conversation also highlights the importance of questioning existing systems and making long-term decisions. The Apostle Paul lays the foundation for Christ and His Church. Thought to Remember: Knowledge leads to perfection Lessons learned: Neither our minds nor our bodies can prepare us for the unity that will exist in the afterlife. In the meantime, we need to grow while realizing that the foundation of our journey is the knowledge of Christ and the unity of our faith. The unity of the faith will occur when we see Jesus as He truly is, and we know as we are known. Then and only then, when we are in a position of complete knowledge, will we be able to achieve perfection. My Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we praise and thank You for laying the foundation and making us equal with all believers. Help us to exercise the spirit of oneness among fellow believers in such a way as to bring praises to Your holy name. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.
Welcome to another episode of the Live Your Dreams Awake podcast! I am really excited to introduce our guest in today's episode. She is an amazing woman, and has a powerful energy, Julie Ann Cairns. She was an economist and ended up running a business teaching people how to invest in the stock market and trade in the stock market, grow themselves and their wealth. With her experience, she became aware that knowledge is not the main blockage of people but it's their belief system. In their scarcity thinking, and subtle belief blockages that are residing below the conscious level of their awareness that would cause them to sabotage their success, no matter how much knowledge they have. Julie started to become interested in the field of subconscious belief reprogramming, and ended up writing a book called The Abundance Code: How to bust the seven money myths for rich life now. It talks about the top seven limiting beliefs about money that most people have, and a step by step process to reprogram, so that you can be free of them and live your update your mental software, and input abundance code into your mental software instead of scarcity code, which most people have inherited from their parents, grandparents society education system. I mean, it's just it's all around us this scarcity thinking. Do you want to know more about the code for abundance? Stay tuned to know how you can activate your Abundance Code! Enjoy! REMEMBER - "Knowledge is not the main blockage of people but it's their belief system." This week's tip is super easy, and it's about really calling in all your dreams and desires into your life. We can think about and imagine and dream about what you want. But putting it down on paper will make a huge difference, writing it in the present tense. I am grateful for my loving relationship. I am grateful for the exotic travels and places that I've been to, being as specific as you possibly can. Write it down, placing those affirmations or those intentions that you want to call in, put it in an envelope underneath your bed mattress, and you will be able to dream into your reality. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, for Brain Fact Friday and episode #133 on Neuroplasticity, or “the ability for our brain to re-wire, grow, adapt or change throughout a person’s lifetime”[i] Welcome back, I'm Andrea Samadi, a former educator who has been fascinated with understanding the science behind high performance strategies in schools, sports, and the workplace for the past 20 years. If you have been listening to our podcast, you will know that we’ve uncovered that if we want to improve our social and emotional skills, and experience success in our work and personal lives, it all begins with an understanding of our brain. I remember the first time I heard the term “neuroplasticity.” It was in 2014 when I first began learning about the brain and learning, and a teacher in a workshop I was running asked me if I knew what it was, and I remember having an idea about what I thought it was but wouldn’t have been able to explain it without this specific YouTube video[ii] showing how pathways of the brain are strengthened with use and weakened when they are not used, or the “use it, or lose it” idea. I put this video in the show notes, but if you have been learning about the brain for some time, I’m sure you’ve already seen this video, as it’s been around for almost 10 years now and I have to say I’m so grateful for content like this that has helped me to learn the basics of neuroscience that I will continue to share with you, and help you to make connections whether you are using this information in the classroom or workplace. I love hearing new ways the podcast is helping people, most recently from Dorothee Oung, from Madrid, Spain, who let me know she has been guiding coaches to the podcast who are learning the basics of neuroscience to help their clients. I always appreciate knowing how these ideas are being used, and that the content is helpful. Thanks for the note Dorothee. Please do send me a message via social media[iii], as I love hearing where you are listening to this podcast, and how you are using this information. Remember: Knowledge isn’t power, until it’s applied. (Dale Carnegie) Back to this episode. In Today’s Brain Fact Friday You Will Learn: ✔︎ What is neuroplasticity and how this concept works in the brain when learning a new skill, thinking a certain way, or feeling a certain emotion. ✔︎ How neuroplasticity helps us to create new habits, and how we can use it to break habits we don’t want to keep. ✔︎ The controversy behind this topic, and how two of the people we have interviewed ignored the naysayers, and built a powerful career with the foundations of neuroplasticity. Which brings us to this week’s Brain Fact Friday: Did you know that "Neurons that fire together, wire together"[iv] and "neurons that are out of synch, fail to link."[v] I remember writing an article on LinkedIn a few years ago, explaining how we can use this idea which involves the concept that every time we learn a new skill, think a certain way, or feel a certain emotion, we strengthen the connections in our brain for whatever it is that we are reinforcing or repeating, or weaken the connection with less use. Since learning creates a synaptic connection when you are thinking, feeling or doing something new, and with repeated practice, we create a neural pathway in our brain that becomes stronger the more we repeat it, it would make sense that if we want to stop doing something, or break a habit, that we just need to avoid certain thoughts, feelings and actions, making the impulses, or neural connections weaker and weaker. Stefanie Faye spoke about this concept on EPISODE #39[vi], taking it one step deeper, explaining that the brain creates high priority pathways with skills we are practicing and then eliminates low priority pathways with skills we ignore. She shares how the brain re-wires itself using myelin (a mixture of protein and fatty substances that form an insulating sheath around the nerve fiber, increasing the speed and efficiency of electrical impulses along the nerve cells) and explaining why patterned repetition is so important for the skills we want to improve, develop, and keep. The Controversy Behind Neuroplasticity What I think is crazy, is that two of the people I have interviewed, have spoken about the fact that they became interested in this concept of neuroplasticity, at a time that it was not yet accepted. Dr. Caroline Leaf, on a bonus episode we released February, 2021[vii] mentioned she wanted to dedicate her studies to the fact that “if we can direct our mind, we can direct or change our brain” and two of her professors told her this was a ridiculous idea. She went on to build her career around this idea, has worked with thousands of people all over the world for the past 38 years, teaching people how to cultivate the power of their own thinking and direct their own brain changes. During our last interview with Barbara Arrowsmith-Young[viii] she mentioned to me prior to our interview that the early days of her program caused quite a lot of controversy, and people even picketed outside her presentation because the concepts she was teaching were not understood or accepted. I have to say, honestly, that if I was picketed during my first presentation on the brain, (it was difficult enough creating a presentation on something new let alone have any criticism about it) I’m not sure I would have continued with this work. To me, you can see the belief that was behind Dr. Leaf’s work for her to push forward and make such an impact, and then Barbara knew that she changed her own brain with the results in her life being so obvious, that this belief is all that both women would need to move forward, leaps and bounds with these ideas. So how can we use this concept of Neuroplasticity in our schools or workplaces? I learned about the AGES Model[ix] that is a good way for us to remember how we can continue to grow our brain and strengthen the neural pathways we want to keep. LEARNING WITH THE BRAIN IN MIND: THE AGES MODEL A: Attention: This was John Medina’s Brain Rule #4. “We don’t pay attention to boring things.” I’m sure you have heard that “audiences check out after 10 minutes” (Summary 4, Brain Rules, Page 94) or that the brain can only focus on one thing at a time, making multitasking a bad idea. The funny thing is that although you may have heard of the fact that the “average person’s attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish, there’s no evidence that human attention is shrinking or that goldfishes have particularly short attention spans either.”[x] So how do we hold our student’s attention in the classroom, or during a presentation we might be doing in the workplace? The next 2 letters hold this secret. G: Generation or Gender to make meaningful connections to prior learning. I think it’s important to make connections based on age, and experience, but I would change this one to gender, using John Medina’s Brain Rule #4 that “male and female brains are different.”[xi] Did you know that men’s and women’s brains are “different structurally and biochemically—men have bigger amygdala and produce serotonin faster and women and men respond differently to stress.” (Summary 11, Brain Rules, Page 260). Women remember emotional details easier not because they are more emotional, but because “they perceive their emotional landscape with more data points (or detail) and see it in greater resolution.”[xii] E: Emotion and EPISODE #127[xiii] went deep into this area. We do know that when audiences (or our students) are checking out after 10 minutes, we can grab their attention back by “telling narratives or creating events rich in emotion.” Emotions help memories form and stick so if you want to make your next presentation or lesson memorable, the best way is to somehow connect with your audience or class with a story that they connect to on an emotional level. This activates the mirror neurons in your audience, and they will listen, connect with you and trust you on a deeper level. S: Spaced Repetition: We heard from Dr. John Dunlosky, a Professor of Psychology at Kent State University, who has contributed empirical and theoretical work on memory and metacognition, including theories of self-regulated learning and metacomprehension. With years of research on which learning strategies yielded the most results for learning new information, it was not using a yellow highlighter in class, (I still always use mine though) but it was spaced repetition of new learning that took the new skill from short term memory to long-term. If we think about how neuroplasticity works, it makes sense that we use whatever method we can to keep what we are learning interesting for learners to actually listen to you, connecting to different generations and genders, adding emotion and repeating the new learning to strengthen the neural pathway and be sure that it’s reinforced with myelin that will make this information pass through the pathway quickly and efficiently. Neuroplasticity to me is to the secret to learning something new, with the knowledge that this new learning will forever change my brain: both its structure and function. Both Dr. Leaf and Barbara Arrowsmith-Young would agree with this. See you next week, for episode #134 with an incredible woman, Kristen Holmes, the VP of Performance Science at WHOOP.com as we debrief my first month using this device that measures sleep, strain and recovery, and was listed at #1 in Wellness with Fast Company’s 2020 Most Innovative Companies. We’re entering a selling season when the reasons for buying are broader than they are during other times of the year. Between seasonal holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, non-holiday seasonality associated with school graduation and sports, and the general energy that comes from experiencing warm weather, customers open their wallets more freely since the holidays. It’s no wonder that pop-up events and outdoor markets are aplenty this time of year. So how are you event planning for optimal profit? Whether you’re opening a brand new brick-and-mortar business, embarking on your 15th outdoor market season, or growing your chain of retail stores, event planning should be an important part of your operational process. In this week’s episode I share two important practices to compliment what you already know! Stack them both or try one strategy this season: Look at grand opening and special events from a new, long-term point-of-view How to start “selling” over a month and a half before your event How behind-the-scenes marketing builds brand awareness and trust Plan for a brand experience that begins before and extends after the event Balance promotional pricing that incentivise customers with your profit needs After you’ve listened, it’s time to take action! When I started working in a retail buying office, I found it to be an exciting time in my life. I adored being part of the decision-making that shaped what customers bought. Specifically, I enjoyed learning how to understand my customers so deeply that I could shop of them — thousands and thousands of them. What you and I have in common is that we excel at translating visual or emotional inspiration into something a customer will pay for. We also have strong presentation skills — from visual communication to store merchandising to selling. Like you, I love this large portion of the job being a merchant! During this early part of my career, I could have left the rest of the merchant role behind. Believe me when I tell you, I tried and here’s how it went! Ultimately, I couldn’t. I couldn’t pick and choose what to focus on and what to ignore, and neither can you. I quickly learned that selling inventory to a paying customer happens in an ecosystem of sorts and that this environment has an infinite amount of influences — some that we control and some do not. There are a handful of essential questions I always ask clients and students because they effectively reveal valuable information about a business like its size, general revenue bracket , and state of growth. When it comes to receiving business support as an entrepreneur or small business owner, sharing as much as you can about your operations is more revealing — and actionable — than sharing how much annual revenue your brand drives. So here’s the million dollar question... How do you handle the administrative work that goes into your retail business? It’s easy to villainize administrative tasks like replying to vendor emails, cataloging digital photos, and handling invoices as pesky to-dos. But nothing can be further from the truth. These administrative examples are just a few of many critical inventory-related aspects of running a profitable merchant business. In this week’s podcast episode, you’ll learn the importance of: Reframing your point of view about business tasks Maintaining a sense of urgency especially if you don’t do the administrative work yourself Understanding the importance of organization even if you’re not naturally organized Embracing your role as a manager — of an employee, freelancers, or yourself After you’ve listened, it’s time to take action! When it comes to mastering accountability, entrepreneurs often think the answer lies in time management. It’s easy to believe that if we manage our time better, we wouldn’t feel behind in our work and could actually plan some personal time off. There’s so much more to planning than time management... but I’m pretty sure you already know this! You juggle finances to buy inventory or raw materials. You shift around items on your to-do list to meet your most urgent deadlines. You put off making personal appointments because there are competing deadlines tied to the urgency of seasonal selling. You juggle like a pro! But… are you planning so you can get ahead of the game or are you scrambling to keep up? Here’s the good news: you can reverse engineer the many benefits of planning if you know what you’re working toward and why your planning for it! You don’t need to overhaul your operational practices or adopt a leadership style very different from your Retail Success Style. You simply need to start planning. This podcast episode highlights three types of planning so that you can make sure you’re covering your bases — now and in the future. As you listen, pay special attention to these points: Merchandise planning helps you optimize your revenue while at the same time minimize the costs associated with carrying too much inventory. You don’t have to be “good at math” to be a planner — you just have to want greater profitability. Predetermine how many employees or what type of business support you’ll need before you’re in a bind. Consider your personal needs when you plan your business calendar and quarterly operational plans. After you’ve listened, it’s time to take action! Marketing, as a critical business function, is just as broad a practice as it is deep — meaning, there are many important moving parts. Luckily there are also plenty of valuable resources for SMBs yet despite the training available at our fingertips, Merchants continue to struggle with marketing their businesses for one main reason — marketing is NOT merchandising. When you take a simple view of retail merchandising, it falls under the broader function of marketing because merchandising your products promotes desirability. When you look at modern marketing as well as modern retail within the context of your cash flow needs, you’ll quickly learn that these serve different roles in your business and that you need both. As you listen to this week’s episode, designed specifically for independently-owned retail SMBs, small-batch manufacturers, and makers, I want you pay special attention to: Avoiding the mistake of using marketing as a cure-all when sales are stagnant Using the Four Pillars of Merchandising to discover opportunities for more revenue and profit Aligning your merchandising and marketing strategies Asking better quality questions when determining your next marketing move The critical role of merchandising and its contribution to a healthy cash flow After you’ve listened, it’s time to take action! I remember my first manager-level role — one with employees to train, develop, and retrain should performance fall below expectations. I loved it when my team and I were like a well-oiled machine and never thought about how I would feel if we weren’t. So I was unprepared when my own manager asked me to have a difficult conversation with an employee whom she suspected was stealing from the business. Whether or not I was prepared, it was a conversation I had to have. In hindsight, I can see that I didn’t receive the best direction from my supervisor (perhaps my fears prevented me from really hearing her). Instead I did the best I could do in the moment. Do any of these feeling sound familiar to you? I decided to get rid of any expectations that this would be a conversation of conflict. I got curious instead. It was a productive, personable, and successful straightforward talk. Your next one can be too. In this episode I share the approach I take when I’m curious about an employee's behavior or performance. Listen for opportunities to make your next “talk” a little easier by trying a clarification-first approach. In this episode I talk about: Feelings that may arise when preparing to have a direct conversation with an employee The difference between clarity and conflict, and types of conflict in the workplace Ways to search for clarity about an employee’s behavior or performance Why asking questions can be the most appropriate way to understand a circumstance or situation After you’ve listened, it’s time to take action! The Darius Foroux Show: Master Your Productivity. Master Your Life.
I'm often asked: “How do you remember the information you read in books?” In this post, I'll explain my system. 1. Have A Purpose—Only read books that teach you how to overcome your current challenges. 2. See Yourself As A Teacher—Sharing knowledge is a great application. You might not be a teacher, but if you act like one, you're already applying knowledge. 3. Highlight & Make Mental Connections—The more connections you make between pieces of information in your brain, the better you remember it. I do that by making a lot of notes. 4. Visualize & Imagine—Another great way to make connections in your mind is by visualizing what you're learning. We're visual learners, and our memories are also visual. 5. Immediately Apply One Piece Of New Knowledge—Look at your life. Ask yourself: How can I grow? That can be personally, financially or spiritually. Understand that growth doesn't happen by itself. Learning new skills, earning more money, having a great relationship — it all takes hard work. But you can make that growth a lot easier if you apply the things you learn in books. Remember: Knowledge alone is completely useless. Thanks for listening! Don't have time to read books? Multiple Choice: Love is: Necessary. Our Calling. Emphasized in the Bible: “God is Love.” The path to personal fulfillment and peace. More important than being right. Behind Revolution 2.0™. The definition of what you do for others when you just don’t feel like it. Hard Both the Reason and the Result in www.resultswithreason.com. All of the above. Love is not: What we feel when we are physically attracted to another. Easy Something we say to get something. Nothing but compassion An emotion created by certain chemicals washing over our brains. Optional All of the above. “All of the above” is correct in both questions. Do you agree? I was having dinner with my wife and our still-at-home son last Sunday, celebrating Mother’s Day. My all-but-completed podcast/blog intended for today 15th was running through my head. It was right, but it didn’t feel right. The argument was sound, the reasoning valid--but it bothered me. As an inveterate people watcher, I took notice of several of those near me. The young waitress shouldering endless heavy trays with beverages, dinner plates and appetizers. Two Moms at separate tables being patiently happy to be there with their way-too-cool sons. Three millennial men trying not to look out-of-place at a restaurant on Mother’s Day. And my own wife and son, trying to find common ground between teenagerhood and middle age. While still being themselves. That’s when it dawned on my what was wrong with my podcast. No love. The Bible says, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” I was the gong. A related secular quote is, “A smart man knows what to say, the wise man knows when not to say it.” In that forming podcast, I was the smart--not the wise--man. As different as all of us in that restaurant were, it became clear to me, like the sand at the bottom of the parting Red Sea, or the sun that comes out from behind storm clouds, that only one thing can hold us together: love. That’s it. I am committed to having us join together in Revolution 2.0™. If you have been following this podcast, you’ve seen that Rev 2.0’s Revolution 2.0 facts, logic and philosophical base are quite sound. But in order to earn the right to be heard, or for me to be heard by you, we have to listen to those we hope to teach and encourage, and they have to get it that we have is what is best for them. In other words, they have to know that we are there for them, not us. And what better foundation for that feeling, that knowing, than for them to get, to grok if you know the term from Star Trek, that we come in love? Remember, the two main tenets, the core philosophies that drive our Revolution 2.0™ thinking and actions here at Revolution 2.0, are: Personal responsibility; take it, teach it and Yes, we are all our Brother’s Keepers. We will touch on these two driving principles as we continue to explore key issues of the day, and long-term philosophical and political questions; questions of real import to us in our daily lives. Hey, anyone have any movie suggestions--in theater or watchable at home? I am running dry and looking for ideas. Please do contact me. It is time for our usual parting thought. For us at Revolution 2.0, it is not simply change your thinking, change your life. It is change your thinking, change your actions, change the world. And if you can do it in love and enjoy the people around you at the same time, all the better. Remember: Knowledge by itself is the booby prize. We hear conversations about “Living Wage”. This implies that the employer is responsible for paying enough for the employee to live in their present circumstances. If true, would we pay a man with stay-at-home-wife and four kids more than a single, childless woman? Of course not. “Living wage” has a very different meaning in these two examples. Key point: Pay people for the value they add, not for what they need. Here’s a military example. Does the military, or other parts of government, pay those who serve with large families more than those of the same rank with no families? Don’t be silly. Rank is the placeholder for value in the military. Expanding on the private business example. Two people; same education, same job skills and the same time on the job in equivalent positions in the same company. One is a man with a non-working wife, a mortgage and money owed on their two cars--and four children who are approaching college age. The other is a single woman with a tropical fish and a paid-for, used car. Do you pay more for to this man than the woman in our example? No, why even ask the question? Their value is the same, but a living wage to the single woman would be completely inadequate, and not meet the definition of a living wage to the man here. We asked the above question to make the point that you deserve to be paid for the value you add to your employer--not for what you need to live the life you have chosen. For example, minimum wage was not designed to support families. As a starting wage, it was designed for people who live in inexpensive housing with one or more roommates, using coupons at the grocery store, taking cheap transportation. Trust me, I did that for years--part of my learning experience…:). Delayed gratification and hard work will get you from minimum wage to where you want to be. Remember the rules for getting into the middle class? Graduate HS Get a full-time job Don’t have kids until you marry. Check out the podcast link to exactly this at “Young, Poor and Angry” The danger of insisting--to the point that it might even become law--on paying people what they need to deal with the financial responsibilities they have chosen should be obvious. Business and governmental agencies, faced with paying employees far in excess of the value they create, will either go out of business, wind up providing an inferior product or service, or in the case of governmental entities, simply raising taxes. Remember, the rules for succeeding personally, financially and politically are all the same. And they are all simple to learn and understand. Simple, and hard to do. And exceedingly well worth it. Today’s simple rules are: Understand that you deserve to get paid for the value your create, not what you for needs you have and Delayed gratification; delay your gratification rather than wanting it all now--and passing the bill along to someone else in the name of needing a “living wage” due to your choices. Life is indeed hard, and as soon as you get that, it becomes dramatically more manageable. From the “Terrible Twos” through the end of life, life is hard. And hard for different people in different ways. All 7 billion of us are going through our own different versions of “hard.” Behind every face there is a story. Each of the 7 billion stories are different. We often think that we are unique in the depth of our struggles because we compare the turmoil inside of us with the relative calm on the exteriors of those around us. Ironically, the people around us are doing the same thing in reverse. This is not a podcast about how life is unfair. If is a podcast about how the rules for success in our lives, personal, financial and political, are 1. The same for everyone and in all three areas, and 2. Simple to understand. Simple, yes, but very hard (there’s that word again). Hard, yes, but jolly well worth it. Life os hard--for everyone--in different ways, and hard is not an excuse or a reason in and of itself to ask for/demand taxpayer assistance. Remember, it is hard for everyone--including the taxpayers. Hey, the NFL draft was last night. Do you care? Did it go well for your team? Please do contact me. There is an old story about two “down home” brothers in NY state and their bankrupt Christmas tree business. (The full story is in the podcast.) They had a failed business model, but were convinced that expansion--hoping for “economies of scale”--would fix it. As silly as that sounds, the same thing goes on all around us. Businesses; as many die of “success”, i.e., drown in their own juices, as die from lack of customers. Cash--and lots of it--is required to grow. Business is a game; you run out of cash, you’re out of the game. Myth of “economies of scale”. The brothers in our story made this mistake. As do many, many others. Without a plan and constant attention to detail, your business will cost more per transaction, per unit, as you grow. Perhaps you grow to be twice as big, but with costs three times as big if you are not careful. Same with government. A great example of diseconomies of scale? Public schools continue to grow. Are they getting any better, despite the overall growth in cost per pupil? Overall in government, are roads, healthcare, public pension funds, etc., yielding better service? Is the massive increase in state and federal spending--with the attendant crippling increase in debt--giving us anything close to the same level of increase in government services? What is it that you see? Better lifestyle comes mainly from better technology; competing private businesses driving prices down while providing better products and services. For example, 50 years ago there were no computers or cell phones, and AC was so rare that movie theaters made a big point of advertising it. Who cares what is playing, let’s just get in out of the heat! Not as much benefit derives from more or bigger government. Government, by definition, does not compete and work to supply more for less that way; it simply provides, and needs watchdogs to keep costs down and services high. Are the politicians effective watchdogs? Do you believe in unicorns? We must be the watchdogs. And we can start right here at Revolution 2.0. And remember the story of the Brothers and their tree business. Absurd, and well and truly going on all around us all the time. Personal aside, do you follow football. The NFL Draft is coming up.
