Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded December 20th, 2022. "Fascism" has become, in the post-totalitarian west, a term traduced through overuse to the point of triteness. So much so, it begs questioning whether this trivialization is not done by some nefarious design than the more usual intellectual laziness of the purveyors of news and other so-called "information". But - and it is an enormous but - fascism did not die with Herr Hitler, its surviving spore has found purchase in the body politic of liberal democracies across the World; in some more readily than others. John Helmer, the self-titled "doyen" of the foreign press corps in Russia is principle of the web news site, Dances with Bears. In February 1941, the Prime Minister took to the airwaves to address the nation, updating them on the war effort: "We stood our ground and faced the two dictators... and we have shown ourselves capable, so far, of standing up against them alone.... Herr Hitler did not dare attempt the invasion of this Island.... he sought to break the spirit of the British nation by the bombing, first of London, and afterwards of our great cities. It has now been proved ... that this form of blackmail by murder and terrorism, so far from weakening the spirit of the British nation, has only roused it to a more intense and universal flame." "In order to win the war Hitler must destroy Great Britain. He may carry havoc into the Balkan States; he may tear great provinces out of Russia, he may march to the Caspian; he may march to the gates of India. All this will avail him nothing.... And all the time, masters of the sea and air, the British Empire—nay, in a certain sense, the whole English-speaking world—will be on his track, bearing with them the swords of justice. The other day, President Roosevelt gave his opponent in the late Presidential Election a letter of introduction to me, and in it he wrote out a verse, in his own handwriting, from Longfellow, which he said, "applies to you people as it does to us." Here is the verse: ...Sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O Union, strong and great! Humanity with all its fears, With all the hopes of future years, Is hanging breathless on thy fate! What is the answer that I shall give, in your name, to this great man, the thrice-chosen head of a nation of a hundred and thirty millions? Here is the answer which I will give to President Roosevelt: Put your confidence in us. Give us your faith and your blessing, and, under Providence, all will be well. We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle, nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. Give us the tools, and we will finish the job." Continuing. Russia is governed by paranoid, autocratic rulers. It has been invaded three times, twice by the Germans, and once by France under Napoleon. Napoleon captured Moscow before retreating, and Germany under Hitler came within spitting distance. Partly as a consequence, Russia is hungry for huge amounts of “buffer” countries on its borders to help protect it. Russia has long been a bold, cruel aggressor notably in the last 90 or so years. 1. In 1932/3, Russia under Stalin induced a famine in Ukraine, killing upwards of 3M people. Stalin then replaced the dead population with Russians, helping to create today's minority Russian-leaning population in eastern Ukraine. 2. In 1939, Russia invaded Finland with 21 divisions totalling 450,000 men. 3. Also in 1939, Russia under Stalin sided with Hitler and Nazi Germany by signing the Molotov–Ribbentrop non-aggression pact, allying the two dictatorships. 4. In 1948, Russia under Stalin attempted to https://revolution2-0.org/kyiv-kiev-we-need-candy-bombers-not-city-bombers-will-you-volunteer-ep-390/ (starve and freeze out divided Berlin) in an attempt to have the entire city for himself. 5. More well known is the failed 1979 Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The US supplied the Afghans with the highly effective Stinger missiles, essentially creating a No-Fly zone over Afghanistan. 6. In 2008, Russia used force to occupy the 20% of the country of Georgia it declared to be leaning to Russia. Sound familiar? 7. Russia has twice attacked Chechnya, attempting to topple its anti-Russian government. In 1999, then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin led the military response against Chechnya. https://www.history.com/topics/vladimir-putin (Putin), Boris Yeltsin's handpicked successor as President, said of the Chechen defenders, “We will rub them out, even in the toilet.” Again, does anything sound familiar? 8. In 2014, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, then a part of Ukraine. And now Ukraine itself. What country is next? Does anyone believe that almost a century of Russian aggression will end with Ukraine? Does anyone believe any dictator when he says that he is finally satisfied, and does not want to gobble up more territory, power and people?  In 1938, British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, believed Hitler when the Nazi leader signed the Munich Agreement saying that he would finally be finished with his many territory grabs if he could just have Czechoslovakia. Even as Chamberlain was triumphantly waving the paper signed by “Herr Hitler,” claiming that, “We will have peace in our time,” Winston Churchill responded with, “He (Chamberlain), had a choice between war and dishonor. He chose dishonor.” Hitler attacked Poland in 1939, breaking the agreement and starting WWII. Churchill became Prime Minister the next year. Sanctions might be hurting Russia, but they are not stopping the invasion and the killing. We must do more now to help Ukraine, Eastern Europe, NATO, and ourselves. It's past time for a No-Fly Zone over Ukraine. In the mid-seventies, Fram oil filters became well-known due an ad campaign that featured the slogan, “You can pay me now, or pay me later.” The mechanic in the ad offered the viewer a simple proposition: Pay me now...

#penguinaudio #audiolibro #audiolibros #Antonio #Scurati #AntonioScurati See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Bridging the Divide

Bully Pulpit

During moments of rhetorical generosity, politicians will give lip-service to bipartisanship or working across the aisle. Another favored metaphor of both Democrats and Republicans is “bridging the divide,” which, once upon a time, would actually happen on major legislation. With the Biden administration now calling for cooperation on infrastructure and other bills, Bob reflects on the fact that not all bridges are well built. Sometimes they collapse.* FULL TRANSCRIPT *TEDDY ROOSEVELT: Surely, there never was a fight better worth making than the one which we are in.BOB GARFIELD: Welcome to Bully Pulpit. That was Teddy Roosevelt, I'm Bob Garfield. Episode 2: Bridging the Divide.MAN1: My talk today is gonna be about how to bridge political divides.WOMAN: President-Elect Biden has made it very clear that he wants to reach across the aisle.MAN2: And then that's gonna be us turning towards each other and seeing  a common humanity that we struggle to see now.MAN3: We need to stop talking about them so much and start talking with each other and about our shared condition, and our shared condition is one of  deep divides.Well, gosh, who can argue about that? Who doesn't want two adversarial sides to come together, like warring tribes on opposite shores, connected at last by a bridge of understanding? That's the premise, for example, of Nathan Borney's new book, Bridge Builders: Bringing People Together in a Polarized Age. And also for the Listen First Project, aimed at healing America by quote, “building relationships and bridging divides.” It's just so eminently reasonable.NARRATOR: The magic of a bridge is that in a way it allows you to walk on air. Bridges provide pathways through the sky so that you can get from here to there sort of flying over, without going through the river or down into the valley or across those railroad tracks.OK, that's from a documentary about actual bridges, many of them now crumbling from decades of neglect. But, yes, in the political context, too, imagine: walking on air, having all obstacles magically averted — not with trusses or girders or cables — but common interest and goodwill.Crowd noiseBecause I suppose there is no dispute too thorny that opposing sides can't, with courage and foresight, broker a deal.CheeringYep, in 1939, evidently people actually shouted “hooray.” The cheers were for British Prime Minster Neville Chamberlain, returning to London from Munich, where he had bridged the divide between Great Britain and Nazi Germany.CHAMBERLAIN: This morning I had another talk with the German chancellor Herr Hitler, and here is the paper, which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Also, for all the folks hunching over their radio sets, politicians of the day spoke very, very, haltingly — especially when they were walking on air and wanting every syllable understood. Chamberlain believed history would reward him for “peace in our time.” But what history heard was Britain bartering the freedom of three million Czechs for Hitler's promise to end European aggression, which is sort of not how it played out, Third Reich-wise. Chamberlain's craven devil's bargain is now virtually synonymous with appeasement. There are less notorious, but nonetheless catastrophic examples in more recent history.CLINTON: We must be bound together by a faith more powerful than any doctrine that divides us — by our belief in progress, our love of liberty, and our relentless search for common ground.Fresh off a failed impeachment in 1998, Bill Clinton desperately needed to broaden his support, reaching across the House aisle to Newt Gingrich's brand new Republican majority.CLINTON: We know big government does not have all the answers. We know there's not a program for every problem. And we have to give the American people one that lives within its means. … For too long our welfare system has undermined the values of family and work, instead of … I challenge every state to match federal policy to assure that serious violent criminals serve at least 85 percent of their sentence. … Criminal gang members and drug dealers are destroying the lives of decent tenants. From now on, the rule for residents who commit crime and peddle drugs should be one strike and you're out.Spending cuts, paring welfare rolls, ruinous Wall Street deregulation, mandatory sentencing — it was the strategy called triangulation. They now call it neoliberalism. In terms of social and economic justice, it should have been labeled Czechoslovakia. When Clinton spoke to the nation, his political nemesis Gingrich sat behind him, grinning and madly applauding. When a bridge is built without understanding of the forces at play, calamity follows. White flight. Poverty. The subprime disaster. The incarceration state. Until finally collapse.NARRATOR: Tacoma Bridge Washington, opened only a few months ago, was built at a cost of over six million dollars. But misfortune overtakes the great structure. These are some of the most amazing pictures ever recorded by a newsreel — the actual collapse of the world's third largest suspension bridge.Bill Clinton's Chamberlain moment at least happened in the good old days, when the adversary was merely fixated on small government, deregulation and the creation of a prison industrial complex. Now the Republican Party has turned into the QAnon Klux Klan, a cult governing —and inciting and fundraising — by Big Lies and their countless corollaries. Here's Sen. Rand Paul responding to ABC's George Stephanopoulous, who had referred to the rulings of 85 courts, 50 state secretaries of state and Trump's handmaiden Attorney General William Barr that the presidential election was not influenced by fraud.SEN. PAUL: But at the same time, I'm not willing just to sit here and say, Oh everybody on the Republican side's a liar and there is no fraud. No, there were lots of problems and there were secretaries of state who illegally changed the law and that needs to be fixed and I'm gonna work hard to fix it and I won't be cowed by people saying, Oh, you're a liar. That's the problem with the media today is they say all Republicans are liars and everything we say is a lie. This is what comes of tying your party's fortunes to the killer clown, Dr. Clorox.TRUMP: It's gonna go way … this is gonna go away … it's gonna go, it's gonna leave, it's gonna be gone … well, I feel about vaccines like I feel about tests, this is gonna go away without a vaccine … it'll go away at some point, it'll go away … at some point this stuff goes away.Same guy who told the Proud Boys to stand by, and whose cabin boy Sen. Lindsey Graham has just had it with the 1619 Project and Black Lives Matter.SEN. GRAHAM: So, our systems are not racist. America is not a racist country. And then there is the January 6 insurrection.REP. CLYDE: There was an undisciplined mob, there were some rioters and some who committed acts of vandalism, but let me be clear. There was no insurrection and to call it an insurrection, in my opinion, is a boldfaced lie.Are you going to believe Republican Congressman Andrew Clyde of Georgia, or your lying ears?NEWSCASTER: Then, sheer terror (screams). An officer crushed against a door frame, pleading for help (screams). They've spent decades denying climate calamity. They trade in lunatic conspiracy theories about Democratic pedophiles. They deny Covid's death toll and the need for vaccines and masks. They tell their base that the media and the left want to enslave them. They use the Big Steal lie to pass racist laws suppressing the Black vote in red states. And now they try to gaslight the world about the Capitol insurrection we all saw live on TV.Tell  me again, why do we want to be civil with these people? As the Tacoma Narrows Bridge proved, civil engineering can lead to disaster. And by no means is the politics of going it alone a novel approach. Each episode we begin Bully Pulpit with a clip of Teddy Roosevelt. This episode, let's end with Teddy, as well.ROOSEVELT: I would prefer to work with moderate, with rational, conservatives, provided only that they do in good faith strive forward toward the light. But when they halt and turn their backs to the light, and sit with the scorners on the seats of reaction, then I must part company with them. We the people cannot turn back.Or, put another way:MUSIC: Bridge to Nowhere by Sam RobertsOk, we're done here. Bully Pulpit is produced by Mike Vuolo and Matthew Schwartz.

Both guys drink beer. Both guys grow luxuriant beards. And most importantly both guys talk Dip: Great discussion on the perfect stab, how to decide what game to play and the Munich Uber driver. Doesn't get better than this. Intro Amby ditches red wine for an episode while Mrs Amby is away and enjoys a beer with Kaner (0 mins 10 secs) They discuss Anglo-Saxon pronunciations and how it relates to the brewery they're drinking in and start  (1 mins 20 secs) Next up is an impromptu chat about the variant Ankara Crescent and how it got inspired but a bit of silliness. Kaner explains how moves work in the variant (4 mins) Kaner moves onto Cataclysm another silly movement rule variant where fleets and armies are amphibious and can move to sea, coastal and land territories (7 mins 50 secs) Amby touches on Kaner's plan to try to work out what variant to play next (9 mins 10 secs) Around the grounds But first Kaner asks Amby about the 1066 variant Tournament and how it's going (10 mins) Kaner proposes little icons next to player's names for winners of tournaments. They briefly digress to the Known World 901 Tournament and while the tourney is pretty much fell apart, its clear that Eki83 is the clear winner and Amby is officially the worst player of the variant (12 mins 20 secs) Amby tries enticing Kaner to maybe play Sopwith (which we covered in episode 6), Kaner instead suggests he'd rather be game master (16 mins 20 secs) Amby starts talking about his games, beginning with an Imperial game where he's playing as Russia. There have been many NMR's, they discuss the perils of games with long phases.  Amby does a blow-by-blow account of his gameplay and what's been happening on the board. Kaner makes fun of Amby for buying into an unrated game  (18 mins 30 secs) Next up are the anonymous games Amby is in - a Divided States game (33 mins 40 secs) Kaner takes on the role of American geography professor and Amby plays American history professor (35 mins 30 secs) Amby then talks briefly about his anonymous Atlantic Colonies game and his strategy of trying to limit the number of Dip games he has to lessen the impact of sitters (39 mins 30 secs) The guys get new drinks. Kaner discovers the podcast has a Twitter account (41 mins) Next its joke time; warning the joke at 45 mins is a little rude (42 mins 40 secs) Kaner decides what variant to play next Kaner teaches Amby how to sort the variants table on vDip (47 mins) Kaner decides he doesn't want to play a hot game (49 mins 15 secs) They throw around ideas about playing Imperium, Edwardian and Spice Islands, before he decides on... Heptarchy IV. He then sets up a new game called Hep Bros (51 mins 30 secs) Variant review: Hundred & timing for the perfect stab Amby talks about a Hundred game called "Want a 3 player game?" - one of the few three player games - set around the Hundred Years War. Amby gives a hat tip again to the History of England podcast (59 mins) He goes onto discuss his game play in the opening, and how he successfully timed his stabs on England (1 hr 5 mins 30 secs) They discuss the positioning of territories, particularly the landbridge between Calais and London (1 hr 7 mins) Amby then works out the timing to then stab France to successfully solo the game (1 hr 8 mins) They discuss what is needed in a perfect stab (1 hr 9 mins 30 secs) Amby talks about why he chose this variant and why it ticked all his boxes before they talk about the two things the guys don't like about the variant (1 hr 11 mins) The guys give a hat tip to the variant creator Andy Schwartz, map designer Derek Carlson and coder Oliver Auth (1 hr 13 mins) They compare how this as a 3 player game compares to 1066 and 843: the Treaty of Verdun. The guys then decide to play a gunboat anonymous game of Treaty of Verdun called Ver-dunny (1 hr 17 mins) Amby gives some tasting notes before talking about a guy downstairs at the bar who looks like a modern day Munich Uber driver with a canny resemblance to Hitler (1 hr 19 mins) Kaner is writing an article for Diplomacy World Former interviewee Chris Martin suggested the guys write an article about the podcast for the Diplomacy World magazine. They then brainstorm what should go into the article that Kaner is going to write. Kaner learns about hashtags with the concept of #F*ckingIdiots. Amby plugs Patreon due to a drop off in people donating to the show, Amby learns about audio levels from Kaner. They talk about Brisbane's crappy train network, filming Kaner's knees and talking to players. They discuss what happened to the DiplomacyCast podcast and acknowledge our podcast should get more into the webDip and playDip space (1 hr 23 mins) They touch on the Tournament of Time over at playDip, discuss being Old Farts and what else needs to go into the article (1 hr 34 mins) Amby discusses General Kessad's step learning curve and absence from playing Dip. Kaner talks about playing Dip in the old days, drawing on the walls and passive rage holding (1 hr 40 mins) Amby suggests we have a Random Questions episode where any player can ask a question - ask at the Twitter account, website, email or via the forum thread in vDip. They also suggest alternative means  (1 hr 46 mins) Is the Munich Uber driver still downstairs? The guys make their way downstairs and Kaner casually walks past the bar to check out Herr Hitler (1 hr 49 mins) Venue: Æther Brewing, Brisbane. Drinks of choice: Kaner - Miso and Honey Pilsner and the Golden Axe cider from Æther Brewing, Brisbane, Australia Amby - Pitchfork Saison, Hop Skip & Jump IPA and the Mayor of Milton lager from Æther Brewing, Brisbane, Australia   Just a reminder you can support the show by giving it 5 stars on iTunes or Stitcher. Herr Hitler gets credit for an awful lot, Buzzkillers, including the invention of the Volkswagen. The story is that he demanded a "people's car" that the average German could afford. Alas, Buzzkillers, the story is much more complicated than that, and Adolph played only a small part in the invention of the cute, little VW Beetle.
